Wubuntu - The Windows Themed Linux Distro You Shouldn't Use

  • Today we're checking out Wubuntu, a Linux distro with a Windows 11-like look and feel. But after going down a research rabbit hole, I discovered a few things that concerned me.
    Chapters:
    00:00 - Intro
    01:02 - Not New
    02:51 - The Website
    05:42 - The Database Incident
    08:21 - The Response
    11:21 - Trademark Issues
    13:15 - More of the Website
    14:23 - Demo
    24:28 - More Findings
    26:41 - Outro
    Corrections:
    21:52 - To clarify: I am not saying that a shutdown dialog like this does not exist in Windows. I am saying that this shutdown app is not in KDE, and therefore was created specifically for Wubuntu/LinuxFX - and was made to mimic the real one seen in Windows NT-based systems.

    As a 'caveat emptor' warning, I will point out that I did purchase a Pro key, using PayPal. My thought was perhaps it was something that I could use for family who refuse to update to newer HW and turn their nose up at "Linux". What shocked me was that I was immediately charged for three copies @ $35 a pop. I contacted PayPal. They said they couldn't help, contact the vendor. I emailed the vendor and did get a email reply. They would work with PayPal and refund my money. 3 months later, not a peep. Oh, and BTW, can't use the single license key because it gives me an error that 'too many licenses are attached to key". Wow, that was money wasted that I could have used elsewhere.

      They wanna act like a bank but don't wanna be a bank. So I'll let a bank do my fight as the buffer between me and PayPal. Hey, it's easier to tell a bank I made a purchase with PayPal and now PayPal is failing to protect my purchase than to do it the straightforward way.

    This reminds me of a website I found that handled logins in a laughably insecure way. All the account logic was handled on the client side, even the password check. That is, it would literally fetch a .txt file from the server, not secured in any way, where the name is the username the user entered, and that file contains all the info from the account, including the password in cleartext.

    • @trueriver1950
      @trueriver1950 Před 2 měsíci +2

      I'd instead advise people to think carefully about whether it would help or confuse them.
      Some folk will be confused, as you suggest; others will find the familiar user interface reassuring.
      Personally I'm with you on this: I would learn faster with a different interface to constantly remind me it's a different system; but people vary and after 21 years in adult ed I know that what helps some people confuses others.
      So never assume that what works for you is going to be best for someone else.
      One of the things that Windows did well at one time was to keep backwards compatibility in most of their user interface upgrades up to around Win 98 or NT. (All the old DOS era keyboard shortcuts still worked, and many still do even now, two decades on)

    • @goaserer
      @goaserer Před 2 měsíci

      @@trueriver1950 I don't disagree with your general point, but in practice it is not a binary choice here.
      If you want the familiarity and know all the Windows shortcuts, probably using Windows is the right choice for you. Nothing wrong with that.
      If you want to try Linux there are plenty of options on that side too. There are some common ideas and symbolism but some things may also be different in the effort to be potentially better then the alternatives.
      But using Linux that uses parts of the Windows interface only makes second place in both categories. It may look familiar at first but two settings screens in the options are different nonetheless. It may support some but probably not all shortcuts you already know. It is a compromise in both directions, why I don't think many people will get happy with such a setup

Not because it looked like Window$ (which I find to be an awfully bad OS), but because it looked slightly different. The icons in the task bar on the right didn't really fit into the theme, for example, and looked more tacked on. And opening any app immediately made it clear that the apps hadn't been modified past a crappily-made theme. And it wanted to be bought for over 100€, although it was mostly just Ubuntu with a custom theme and shell.

It's a useful tool, but some programs flat out don't work with it, another compatibility method might be better, or it would be easier to work with a native alternative(Openrazer supremacy). On Macs, running Win11 virtually through Parallels is generally more reliable and I've heard that VMs are the only way to get Adobe kind of working on Linux, but only has support up to DX11 whereas Wine works with up to DX12, and I know that on Linux, it's best to get the Linux version of Steam and let Proton do the work rather than do the Windows version through Wine, which is more of a MacOS thing.
