- Just for fun, I decided to try and imagine what a Linux distro would look like if it got hit by the enshittification stick that seems to affect every digital product of service these days.

I love that Windows 11 is actively losing market share bc MS dropped the ball so hard in enshitifcation.
No worries, MS will push 11 even harder. Maybe they’ll disable important services in 10 to force upgrades.
im thinking of moving back to a debloated windows 10 islc which has security updates till like 2032 (im on arch rn) because i have an nvidia laptop, want hibernation, secure boot and no lag when screensharing on discord with an obs recording and a demanding game running. with windows i didnt have that problem
Funnily enough, it's losing market share to Windows 10 of all things lol.
I think Microsoft already factored lost users in their estimates when they implemented the strict system requirements. There was no way they would get the same market penetration as Windows 10. They were much more aggressive in trying to push Windows 10...and pretty much all PCs were compatible. With Windows 11, they've already pushed a release update that prevents Athlon 64 X2 or coreduo (+ everything older) from working. The TPM bypass still won't work. People need to understand that Microsoft can do this whenever they want on unsupported hardware. The bypass is NOT full proof solution!!!

This kinda sound like something Apple would do.
Not a realistic argument. They would have used the greenwashing argument "want to save the planet and do your part ? Upgrade to eco-friendly slow charging !".
You forgot the requirement to pair every new or changed piece of hardware with your personal Digital License™ database. This is the proof, you only use certified and allowed hardware, that can not circumvent telemetry in a malicious manner. Otherwise it would be rejected and loads of unrelated malfunctions will occur. Due to safety reasons of course. Crucial key component ist the TPM 2.0 cryptographic chip, that prevents even the most experienced hacker - sorry, user - from turning off important data streams, like e.g. taskbar ads, transmission of your browser history, etc.
the hardware has to have the E-corp seal of approval or else the system wont boot. we wouldn't want you to ruin your computer by running potentially unsafe hardware. repairs will also have to be done by an e-corp specialist to ensure you are getting the experience you deserve! @@AzureSoukyuu It's not hard to do it for one visual. It is hard to do it for every single one that is on the screen for no more than a few seconds each, for a 10+ minute video, and not miss a single reference to one of the companies that were in the original screens.
This is one scenario that the Gnu Public License (GPL) was designed to prevent. Especially the requirement that any additions / improvements / changes to the code be made Open Source as well is what prevents the "Extend -> Exterminate" part of the scenario. Which is why we should definitely use the GPL more often.
We have a lot to thank RMS (Richard Stallman) for.
Richard Stallman is a moron. He claims to want freedom of choice for users, then proceeds to rant about Linux distros not being truly free and open because they make it easy for users to install proprietary software. The thing about freedom of choice is that it means people get to choose things you don't agree with, if somebody wants to install Debian then load it up with Microsoft products, they can, it is their choice.
To me, Stallman is the exact opposite of what he claims to stand for.

Another "feature" that shouldn't be left out is limiting the number of apps that can run at the same time. If I remember correctly Microsoft used to do that with the Starter Editions of Windows.
However the last starter version was for Windows 7, and I think that feature was removed on Vista. And the hardware running Starter versions was really bad, so it probably helped performance a bit, but it would still be better if it could be disabled.
Starter was for netbooks, which are inherently a POS anyways

Im still torn on switching to linux. My current plan when windows 10 is retired is to dual boot Linux and w11. I mostly use my computer for gaming which has been getting better on the linux side. The main issue is for those edge case games that don't run on linux at all, I would still need a windows OS. We will see how it goes between now and the end of windows 10.

This is what Parallels for Mac is doing, sans the free version. The one-off payment is now only for the lowest tier, which does not allow you to use all of the RAM and CPU cores of your machine. For anything more you need subscription (which is crazy since it is a standalone, locally running app).
And that's why I cannot use Apple Silicon Macs. Don't get me wrong, what the Asahi Linux team is doing is nothing short of incredible, but given literally EVERYTHING is reversed engineered with zero help from Apple, I think I'll just stay far away from Apple hardware.
@@cameronbosch1213 Yeah I know what you mean. If it wasn't for such a good h/w I'd ditch it in a second. Isn't this basically what happened to Windows? I remember Windows XP and 7 did not have any telemetry, advertisement or any bloat, and it even ran way faster than Windows 10 (on my machine)
XP introduced 'windows genuine advantage', which I think was a start. It started on start up and phoned home. It was very hard to not install.
Windows 10 was a mess in general
_Somehow_, Win 11 is faster on unsupported machines than 10
Telemetry started with Windows 95. At this point this was not official and Microsoft appeased when they were caught. At this time internet access was unusual and Windows sending something over the network without a user command was noticeable.
Man, Windows XP was awesome. I'd probably still be using it if modern programs would bloody run on it. Also, my favourite game won't run on anything newer without Compatibility Mode on anyway. Maybe I just like it cause it's what my first computer that was mine and not the family's shipped with, or maybe it was just the best one before the company started going downhill.

It only works if the users are complacent enough to accept the changes, but unfortunately they usually are
Yes, it's changing through years. With that time they forget that something has gone worse before the new issue is added.
You forgot that if you have a computer/laptop that still works that is 3+ years old. You're locked out in any features and security updates till you order the newest devices that the new version supports for another 3 years.
Great Video
That is exactly why I switched to Linux from Windows 10. I got a computer in 2020 with the intent to use it until 2030, as I'd gotten my previous desktop in 2009. And then Microsoft declares that my computer is too old. So I switched to Debian.
First, I don't know if someone complimented you, so well done, this video is so well put together. From profesional editing, to the story of our presentator being fired and replaced, to nice Easter eggs like 7:39 are incredible.
If Linux did not have a copyleft license like GPLv2, (perhaps if it was MIT or BSD licensed), this is a real possibility. See how MacOS and Playstation have used BSD.
Is there anything wrong with Sony and Apple (Microsoft also, btw, network stack) using BSD-licensed software?
Exactly why this hasn't been able to be done with Linux; any customer who buys or uses a copy of something licensed under a copyleft license has the right to the source code and to use, change, and redistribution under the same license.
That's why there could be forks of programs such as LibreOffice (from OpenOfficeOrg, now Apache OpenOffice, permissively licensed, and now pretty much dead), XOrg (forked from XFree86, although that was permissively licensed under a slightly modified MIT license until the final release of 4.4, which the fork of the final beta of XFree86 4.4 as XOrg server came from), MATE and Cinnamon (forks of GNOME 2 and 3 respectively) and countless times Debian and Ubuntu have been forked to create new distros.
Oddly enough, there used to be boxed Linux distros on CDs and DVDs that you had to pay for to get the distro. That was forever killed by Ubuntu and Canonical's ShipIt service sending free (as in cost AND speech) DVDs of Ubuntu to anybody. That could be done because Mark Shuttleworth is literally a multi-millionare many times over. As much as we all hate Ubuntu and Canonical now, they did manage to change the distribution of Linux distros forever.
@@IvanIvanov-nn9osI don’t believe there are any problems with them using BSD because the software license allows this.
@@IvanIvanov-nn9os Nothing wrong. A license without copyleft would allow easy ensh*ttification which we Linux users won't like.
@shivanandvp well, the purpose of BSD license was (and is) also to stimulate businesses to embrace new technologies. Which kinda shaped the world. It is a clown world sometimes, I agree, but... how many years it took us to get a Linux gaming console, for example?
You know how as you watch a movie you hate the villain more and more as he progressively shows his cruelty? That's how it felt. Good job for this demonstration Nick!

Apparently YT is trying to implement the same. And i read somewhere that its something that ppl much prefer over ads in the middle of a vid. (as if they won't implement both)
Someone should patent a chair to "enhance" the TV viewing experience. For example, after sitting down, automated ankle and wrist restraints might be automatically deployed to prevent the user from accidentally injuring themselves by trying to stand up again. Once in the chair, the user would be presented with an unlimited stream of entertainment, info-tainment, and info-mercials, with pay-per-view fees automatically charged to the occupants credit and debit cards. Forever...

This is why I am on Debian. They have a democratic internal structure and are not seeking profit. Their focus on stability also means they aren't going to go for fads. I think they will always remain quite behind compared with operating systems created by profit seeking companies, but they're like a backstop from this kind of enshittification.
I think the opposite side of the coin is Arch Linux. It’s also a community-maintained distro, but spearheading the use of bleeding-edge packages and new technologies. Sure, Fedora uses them day 0, but that is a corporate distro by Red Hat. Day 1 is still good compared to day-0 access.
@@commentarysheep I'm very glad we have arch too. Having a large body of users using software as soon as it comes out is a very important service to provide to the linux community. If Windows does become a subscription i bet that 50% of their users will go to either mac, chromeos or linux at the rate they are locking features behind activation.
I am your average... opposite of a power user. I use Windows because it came with the computer, and I don’t really want to have to get my hands in the guts of my computer's OS, and I've heard so many horror stories about users like me getting absolutely screwed by our own incompetence on every other option that I refuse to even bother messing with Linux as a toy or novelty.
That said, if Windows makes their OS a subscription... the only thing I hate more than computer junk I don't understand is expensive subscriptions. And I hate Apple's walled garden BS and expensive status symbol hardware, and I've used Chromebooks and they suck. I want something that you just install it and it works, that will run an internet browser, run office tools like a word processor and a spreadsheet program, and run my games. The horror stories have convinced me that Linux is not that... but I will definitely have to at least try the most recommended beginner distro if MS does something frustrating enough, and I suspect a lot of computer users on my level of understanding and comfort are in the same position.
Today I read a paper from 1999 criticising the way MS has built an empire selling OSs and how they're a house of cards and even their huge low understanding userbase could get pissed off enough and learn enough about computers to try something else and stop buying not just the products themselves but the slick marketing they come with, and it's all still relevant. If anything, that paper is more prescient 25 years later than it was at the time. Well, that part anyway. The guy's got some political views that were questionable at the time and really didn't age well.

Yes ! But with fluids transitions between updates frequency.
It would be really awesome to be able to just switch from a update frequency to an other in the settings instead of having to completely change distribution ! Why having a hard limit between rolling-release (like Arch), normal updates, and LTS likes (like ubuntu) ?
E Corp would probably ask users to make a full OS install to change from a update frequency to another (like switching from a version of Windows to another) which comes with the cost of the upgrade. And you can't slow updates down without losing all the features of the tier. (You can still switch to lower tier without having to pay less money to E Corp).
