A cyber-magic card trick like no other | Marco Tempest

  • The suits, numbers and colors in a deck of cards correspond to the seasons, moon cycles and calendar. Marco Tempest straps on augmented reality goggles and does a card trick like you've never seen before, weaving a lyrical tale as he deals. (This version fixes a glitch in the original performance, but is otherwise exactly as seen live by the TEDGlobal audience, including the dazzling augmented reality effects.)

    "ohh his lifts were so bad"... "ohh it was obviously a pre-recorded video". Congratulations for exposing these obvious practices... I've been performing magic with just cards for a few years now here and there, and I still get the unavoidable "shakes"; trembling of the hands while presenting to an audience. He had shakes and still executed his performance wonderfully. No one would have noticed his double/triple lifts. And his video was awesome. I doubt any of us here would put the time in to plan a performance like this.

    Technology meets the design of magical performance art, and all quite entertaining. That meets every criteria for being a TED talk. Technology, Entertainment and Design. I really enjoy the more technical and scientific TED talks, those are examples of "what we do." But, it is important not to forget the human dimension, the art, passion and laughter -the "why we do it." Well done! Loved it!

    The deck is stacked. If you look at the spread in the beginning you can see the kings and queens all together and the section of 247,247,247,247. When he shuffles, you can see that after he shuffles, he places the left portion on top nothing ever changed. and the fancy cutting of the deck, well he's not actually cutting the deck. The computer simulations don't actually make the trick any better. It's just a camera with card recognition.

    To be honest, it is hard to consider this trick as actually a really good one, but I think that the point of this is to show what could be done with technology, and the potential of future uses of it, including a (better) card trick.

  • @PiraticalFox
    @PiraticalFox Před 11 lety

    Exactly. It's all laid out and since he fans the cards and you can see the order, you can tell that he never shuffles them. He's not bad, it's just blatantly obvious what he's doing from that camera angle.
    And, by the way, the deck is missing the eight of hearts and the eight of spades. I guess he couldn't come up with a way to add them to the story. :)

    90% presentation, 10% effect - I enjoyed this presentation as a layman. As a magician, I didn't care - He's on TED for a reason - he focused on the most important part - the 90% presentation. I guess that's why he's on TED and magicians like me are commenting on his video. That was a great effect, anyone can do it - but no one else does the presentation. I really enjoyed it.

    it's a bit of a stretch, but A = 1 and each numbered card represents that # of spots. a J = 11, Q = 12, K = 13. adding all of this together & multiplying by 4 gives you 364. they then tack on one more for the joker; yes, just one of the jokers. so, it's a bit convoluted, but this is their explanation.

  • @magicmagicman
    @magicmagicman Před 11 lety

    Each suit has 91 spots which totals 364. Adds 2 jokers equals 366 which is the number of days in a leap year.

    Cave Johnson could not be more correct. It's also noteworthy that, if we are using the cards as a basis for solar years, we should note that there are about 365.24 days in a year. I don't want to get too pedantic, but I love getting too pedantic.
    All that said, neat exhibition of special effects. I'm not sure I follow the original idea of this radically changing how we perceive our world
