Marco Tempest straps on augmented reality goggles and does a card trick like you've never seen before, weaving a lyrical tale as he deals. Don't know why but when he finished and everyone applauded, my heart just kind of melted. The look on his face was of pure happiness and he looked so proud of himself...bravo Marco.

"ohh his lifts were so bad"... "ohh it was obviously a pre-recorded video". Congratulations for exposing these obvious practices... I've been performing magic with just cards for a few years now here and there, and I still get the unavoidable "shakes"; trembling of the hands while presenting to an audience. He had shakes and still executed his performance wonderfully. No one would have noticed his double/triple lifts. And his video was awesome. I doubt any of us here would put the time in to plan a performance like this.

The trick is suuuper simple and even tho it was performed with rather poor sleight of hand, adding the augmented reality was incredibly clever and engaging.

Technology meets the design of magical performance art, and all quite entertaining. That meets every criteria for being a TED talk. Technology, Entertainment and Design. I really enjoy the more technical and scientific TED talks, those are examples of "what we do." But, it is important not to forget the human dimension, the art, passion and laughter -the "why we do it." Well done! Loved it!

Loved this trick. Took me a while to work it back and dissect it. I just noticed that he omitted 2 cards: the 8 of spades & hearts
I just wish he would have said, "No camera tricks" while he strapped those goggles to his head haha.

Using augmented reality, this is one of the finest card trick ever performed. In future, so many techno tools will be made with this kind of trendy technologies to thrill the audience with its 3-D effect. A good show. Highly entertaining.

I think the trick was the "augmented reality" was a preconceived video and he just played along to it, that head gear is the big trick.

That was amazing.
The order of the cards is very real, the only things that are augmented is the obvious stuff.
And no, hollywood does not use the same type of software to create their visual effects, it's a whole different beast.

The deck is stacked. If you look at the spread in the beginning you can see the kings and queens all together and the section of 247,247,247,247. When he shuffles, you can see that after he shuffles, he places the left portion on top nothing ever changed. and the fancy cutting of the deck, well he's not actually cutting the deck. The computer simulations don't actually make the trick any better. It's just a camera with card recognition.
You say that as if its impossible for anyone to get a sense of wonder out of this.
The more you know about magic, the less these things bring about that awe.
The visual spice makes up for an average card handler.

To be honest, it is hard to consider this trick as actually a really good one, but I think that the point of this is to show what could be done with technology, and the potential of future uses of it, including a (better) card trick.
Exactly. It's all laid out and since he fans the cards and you can see the order, you can tell that he never shuffles them. He's not bad, it's just blatantly obvious what he's doing from that camera angle.
And, by the way, the deck is missing the eight of hearts and the eight of spades. I guess he couldn't come up with a way to add them to the story. :)

90% presentation, 10% effect - I enjoyed this presentation as a layman. As a magician, I didn't care - He's on TED for a reason - he focused on the most important part - the 90% presentation. I guess that's why he's on TED and magicians like me are commenting on his video. That was a great effect, anyone can do it - but no one else does the presentation. I really enjoyed it.
The trick was easy to get, but overall a brilliant performance of skill.
What a cool way to tell a story, that's for sure.
it's a bit of a stretch, but A = 1 and each numbered card represents that # of spots. a J = 11, Q = 12, K = 13. adding all of this together & multiplying by 4 gives you 364. they then tack on one more for the joker; yes, just one of the jokers. so, it's a bit convoluted, but this is their explanation.
Each suit has 91 spots which totals 364. Adds 2 jokers equals 366 which is the number of days in a leap year.

It is not some magic tricks he wants to show! It is the state-of-art augmented reality technology. Some are combination of tricks and computational effects, which I'm not sure. But it is definitely a great demo!

Cave Johnson could not be more correct. It's also noteworthy that, if we are using the cards as a basis for solar years, we should note that there are about 365.24 days in a year. I don't want to get too pedantic, but I love getting too pedantic.
All that said, neat exhibition of special effects. I'm not sure I follow the original idea of this radically changing how we perceive our world

In response to card handling, you can see the flaws, but the "audiences" view is much closer and harder to hide. Maybe if the the visual effects in the corner pulled attention, it would be a better misdirection for the cards.

the non-shuffle at 3:20 was unfortunately obvious. He clearly separates the cards again before stacking them just the way they had been.

If you count the Jacks, Queens, and Kings as 11, 12, and 13 and the Joker as 1 then you get 365.
That is 4 * (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12+13) + 1 = 365

4:27 something happens when he puts the cards back. Almost like it skipped some frames. Some cards jump towards himself a bit. Then at 4:30 he shuffles them 3 times and the last card remains the last one till he shows it at the end.
Th3D4v1d I’m a magician and trust me on that, no frames were skipped. He just does a minor mess up.
At 1:04 when the deck is laid out you see it is all in order to tell the story. I'm sure he can do card tricks but this in not one of them.
To think, in the future, Techno Mages will look back on this great ancestor of theirs and say, "fuck him, he didn't shuffle the cards."
