What is MicroLED and how does it compare to OLED?

  • Samsung claims its new MicroLED TV tech offers all the benefits of OLED without the drawbacks. Digital Trends will take a close look at CES 2018 to see if MicroLED TV lives up to the hype.
    Apple is also looking to MicroLED to be the display in future Apple Watches and iPhones. It is still in the development stages, and the ability to reliably grow the tiny LED's to fit in a small watch display is a major hurdle.

    TV technology boggles my mind. I was born in 1957 and as a child growing up I watched television that used CRT technology and was in black and white plus the resolution just plain sucked. TVs have evolved into super thin screens with beautiful color contrast and resolution so good it looks like it has been painted on. I really don't see how they can get any better.

      Burn in and image retention are not the only drawbacks. The limited brightness capability is also a huge drawback as we are evolving into HDR...OLEDs can't produce more than 1,000 NITs (fine now but is not keeping up with quantum led panels which go up to 2000 NITs and soon we could see 10,000 NITs. But the biggest drawback to OLED is manufacturing. For each panel manufactured successfully, one has to be thrown out due to defect. They are so finicky to manufacture that no one has managed to get successful production levels over something like 60%. That keeps the price very high and out of the hands of most consumers. When micro led reaches critical mass the production cost should drop down to somewhere around the level of current LEDs

    Until this tech hits consumers and you can walk into a bestbuy to pick one up it's really a moot point whether or not its an OLED killer or not seeing as how OLED TVs have been on the shelves for the past several years and keep getting better each year. We still don't know what drawbacks microLED has either, and as mentioned in the video its not perfect. While you wait for MicroLED people have been enjoying the superior PQ provided by OLED for the past few years, and will continue to do so. When it comes to tech its never a good idea to wait, buy the best there is now, and when its time to upgrade in 5 years buy the best there is then or you'll be waiting forever.

    But let’s just agree to the fact that LG is going down if they continue their investment on OLED, because clearly this technology upright destroys it in every way (brighter, same level of blacks, inorganic so it’s cheaper, no burn in, and most importantly is it lasts longer)

    It's not something Samsung alone is claiming; it's objective fact that microLED is better than OLED. No one who knows anything would claim otherwise. Samsung happens to be the first to the consumer market with a microLED TV, and quicker than most industry roadmaps ever predicated, so OLED will die far faster than most believed, but it isn't just their marketing hype (which they're very good at). They were saying market late 2018-2019

      @Aramil4 Před 6 lety +2

      Aramil4 BTW, my sources are Sony and Samsung both showing moving imagery on their displays, and the fact that Samsung has already installed one in a cinema in Europe. You think it's just showing still photos? OLEDs response time is insane, and most other display architectures have lower pixel-response time, including LCD. No using that as a legitimate reason why a display tech would fail in the consumer market is just plain silly. I like how you took the most insignificant, nonsense detail (which took some fishing, I'd imagine) to debate with. That's like using the oil capacity as a factor to make a car purchase. No one, anywhere, ever, in the history of ever, has cared about pixel-response in the consumer display sector. You twit.

    • @Aramil4
      @Aramil4 Před 6 lety +1

      Jon Jonzz lol what are you talking about? Motion resolution is what everyone is talking about now. LG just introduced black-frame-insertion (bfi) to their OLEDs to improve motion resolution etc ( bfi would not work /make sense without the extreme pixel response time ). There’s a reason no one serious about film / home theatre uses lcd - the inherent motion blur makes it very bad for motion picture (this has been known for 10 years and will not change). That doesn’t mean swaths of idiots gullible to marketing will not still buy the sets. That’s not what we’re discussing. We were discussing whether led could be superior to OLED in terms of picture quality.... the answer is “obviously not assuming you want to use it for motion picture”

    mLED and QLED (self-emissive) have the potential to destroy OLED. Both technologies are inorganic and don't suffer from image retention, ghosting, burn-in effect and can go brighter while consuming less power. And they offer better, more consistent off-axis viewing. All while offering a longer lifespan. I know it will take years before these technologies become widely available and affordable, but I can't wait.

    • @jens3545
      @jens3545 Před 6 lety +1

      Wait and see ;) every self emmissive display will suffer from burn in, Samsung is only good in marketing because they know they fucked up the OLED market and already lost it. Samsung Galaxy Phones have burn in issues too and surprise they use a different OLED technique. I for myself have an old Nexus 5 with an IPS Panel AND burn in. So i would not say that only self emmissive displays can burn in, LCDs aswell (VA is more stable but yeah).

    • @Enigmatism415
      @Enigmatism415 Před 3 lety

      @TheLegend Having the best response times is only one benefit of MicroLED-what's more important is not having burn-in, being low power consumption, wafer-thin, and both incredibly bright yet completely black (infinite contrast), which allows for the widest possible colour gamut. The current downsides are cost and size (temporary problems).

    The biggest problem is that Samsung comes up with new TV tech every year, "It's the latest and greatest" each year. (although it isn't) then the next year, the previous year's technology is gone, and we have something "newer and better." It's simple marketing that the general consumer falls for... Maybe eventually consumers will see it and stop buying into it. I agree Samsung TV's are great, however due to how they promote them and the information I said above, I won't buy one. You don't feel like it's ever worth it because you're tv isn't as good the next year. Look at OLED, it's been the best available for about 4 years now. OLED has been fine turning its imagine over that 4 year span, it doesn't come out with OLED one year, then eliminate it for something else the next.

Uneducated people think it's about higher resolution when in fact that couldn't be further from the truth. 4k is OVERKILL resolution for the majority of people in the home as a 55" screen is about as large as most people would want to go for the living space in their entertainment area. As most I watch TV 10' from the screen not 3' from it.

      I'm seeing here that they can be compared. I understand that microLED is basically the advanced LED that can provide similar images as OLED but without its drawbacks. And both are without backlight. I'm getting that it's basically the same approach but with different materials. One is organic another is not, it's the same thing as its parent only smaller.
      That if i got the video well enough.

      @youtubesuresuckscock Před 6 lety +7

      Actually, PC sized monitors (30" or smaller) are going to be the last ones to show up, because the biggest challenge behind MicroLED is making them small enough without costing a fortune to make. It'll be easier and cheaper to make larger MicroLED screens than smaller ones. That's what's weird about this tech; it's the first time a screen technology is cheaper the larger it gets because the main manufacturing challenge is getting the size down.
