- Samsung claims its new MicroLED TV tech offers all the benefits of OLED without the drawbacks. Digital Trends will take a close look at CES 2018 to see if MicroLED TV lives up to the hype.
Apple is also looking to MicroLED to be the display in future Apple Watches and iPhones. It is still in the development stages, and the ability to reliably grow the tiny LED's to fit in a small watch display is a major hurdle.

TV technology boggles my mind. I was born in 1957 and as a child growing up I watched television that used CRT technology and was in black and white plus the resolution just plain sucked. TVs have evolved into super thin screens with beautiful color contrast and resolution so good it looks like it has been painted on. I really don't see how they can get any better.
3D and VR have a long way for developing
They'll always try to make them better to keep making money.
@@illogical1421innovation is a good thing tho
OLED is basically this generation's Plasma TV. It has good picture quality but the potential burn-in and image retention issue is a huge flaw in that tech.
Oled is only good for SDR rec 709 content HDR is not worth it on these TVs plus oleds look better in the dark which is strange everytime I turn on my old b6 model I just turn the lights off because it looks better you don't get the light shining on the TV which is annoying
The burn-in issue has been fixed with algorithms that eliminate image retention ;-)
D J then why do I see a cnn logo on mine? The pixel shift only does so much, its a very real problem on oleds, and it gets worse with time
Burn in and image retention are not the only drawbacks. The limited brightness capability is also a huge drawback as we are evolving into HDR...OLEDs can't produce more than 1,000 NITs (fine now but is not keeping up with quantum led panels which go up to 2000 NITs and soon we could see 10,000 NITs. But the biggest drawback to OLED is manufacturing. For each panel manufactured successfully, one has to be thrown out due to defect. They are so finicky to manufacture that no one has managed to get successful production levels over something like 60%. That keeps the price very high and out of the hands of most consumers. When micro led reaches critical mass the production cost should drop down to somewhere around the level of current LEDs
@@Great_America thats a bandaid. not a fix. you can still get burn-in just not to the degree it used to be. OLED is nice but it has a very limited life time for the price they charge.
This is the true concept of light emission that LED TVs have been trying do forever.
this is the first time since CRT TV's that we will get a proper fucking TV, so far nothing has beat CRT
The thing is what is often marketed as an LED TV isn't a true LED TV. It's just an LCD screen backlit by LCDs and you still get the same disadvantages of any LCD display
unless its masked disadvantages by IPS technology
@@GamingAmbienceLive Scanlines look like shit, as does curved glass. Interlacing sucks too. Also not good for your eyes...
ElevatorMan5482 ElevExperiencing Productions it is still better than lcd with CFC tube light for back lit since direct backlight once can have area dimming.
funny how good this pictures look on my 10 year old Monitor
That is called placebo, my friend
Bruh its cuz the size of screen put bad quality youtube video in real small window and voila
They should have continued development of SED TVs back in 2008, which were a mix of CRT and LCD technology. It had the sharpness and slimness of an LCD but the warmth, color and atmosphere of a CRT.
Until this tech hits consumers and you can walk into a bestbuy to pick one up it's really a moot point whether or not its an OLED killer or not seeing as how OLED TVs have been on the shelves for the past several years and keep getting better each year. We still don't know what drawbacks microLED has either, and as mentioned in the video its not perfect. While you wait for MicroLED people have been enjoying the superior PQ provided by OLED for the past few years, and will continue to do so. When it comes to tech its never a good idea to wait, buy the best there is now, and when its time to upgrade in 5 years buy the best there is then or you'll be waiting forever.
And here we go!!
Tbf, to get the best for your wallet it's also viable to buy whatever was second best last year
Even Mini LEDs take on OLEDs now let alone these futuristic beasts.
Gonna get an LG B7 55" for now, then wait for this tech to improve!
Great comparison! Thanks for explaning the difference so clearly. You should have lot more subscribers.
The best video on the subject. Thanks guys!
So this will give image quality as good as oled but fix burn in issue? Sound very good!
bezelesssss.....
Our wallets won't look very good though.
Chris Lopez At first, like any other technology it will get cheaper
There is no burn in issue. There is an idiot issue however.
@@urbanistgod Still, you're talking 5-10 years from now until it's cheap enough most of us can afford it....I mean this video and comment are already 3 years old almost and there's still virtually nothing out there for mirco-LED TV's...
It's going to take some time as they will have to bring the diodes size down and smaller display sizes for home use and reasonable price.
That's going to be pricey gathering what is needed to be produced in a small size. I think for the time being sticking with Led and shrinking the fald is a better approach, so can we expect microfald to come out?
Now you'll be able to see Samsung's forced ads even more clearly.

OLED>>>>>>>>>>>LCD
the freaking tv has its own bouncers!!
So microled is basically an inorganic "OLED" Without the drawbacks of it being organic like degradation and burn in... I'm excited
Looks like Samsung's Micro-LED is going to kill OLED in future. I'm not sure though but the vibes telling me that
To what I know is Samsung isn't that good in micro-led but the Taiwan companies are and they are supplying those microled needed for production.
Samsung micro led kill Samsung Amoled. interesting
LG is also doing an amazing job with displays,WELL on TVs only since they failed at phone screens, v30 and Pixel 2 XL
I really hope this takes off
Too bad, Sony has already started developing this technology and may be able to pull out a proper mLED TV earlier than the rest.
But let’s just agree to the fact that LG is going down if they continue their investment on OLED, because clearly this technology upright destroys it in every way (brighter, same level of blacks, inorganic so it’s cheaper, no burn in, and most importantly is it lasts longer)
LG already have 8k 88inch oled.. let's see if it's possible to have microled that small..
haven't seen anything recently but Apple was supposed to have a trial production of mLed by the end of 2017 for their watches. Basically I'm saying that the technology can be built just as small as oled. I think the watch has around 300 ppi. An 88" 8k would have 100 ppi.
lex Tr3 They would not be investing so heavily in such a technology if they could not foresee manufacturing of singular, smaller panels in the future.
Sony a1e gets so bright I have to decrease its brightness .... also OLED panels test to last 10 years assuming you watch it 12 hours daily
Johnny Pigman why is it bad?
It's not something Samsung alone is claiming; it's objective fact that microLED is better than OLED. No one who knows anything would claim otherwise. Samsung happens to be the first to the consumer market with a microLED TV, and quicker than most industry roadmaps ever predicated, so OLED will die far faster than most believed, but it isn't just their marketing hype (which they're very good at). They were saying market late 2018-2019
Wtf are you talking about? microLED is inferior to OLED in pixel response time which makes it unsuitable for motion picture (compared to OLED). If you want to argue with this fact, please bring sources.
Aramil4 really?
Aramil4 Where are your sources bud?
Aramil4 BTW, my sources are Sony and Samsung both showing moving imagery on their displays, and the fact that Samsung has already installed one in a cinema in Europe. You think it's just showing still photos? OLEDs response time is insane, and most other display architectures have lower pixel-response time, including LCD. No using that as a legitimate reason why a display tech would fail in the consumer market is just plain silly. I like how you took the most insignificant, nonsense detail (which took some fishing, I'd imagine) to debate with. That's like using the oil capacity as a factor to make a car purchase. No one, anywhere, ever, in the history of ever, has cared about pixel-response in the consumer display sector. You twit.
Jon Jonzz lol what are you talking about? Motion resolution is what everyone is talking about now. LG just introduced black-frame-insertion (bfi) to their OLEDs to improve motion resolution etc ( bfi would not work /make sense without the extreme pixel response time ). There’s a reason no one serious about film / home theatre uses lcd - the inherent motion blur makes it very bad for motion picture (this has been known for 10 years and will not change). That doesn’t mean swaths of idiots gullible to marketing will not still buy the sets. That’s not what we’re discussing. We were discussing whether led could be superior to OLED in terms of picture quality.... the answer is “obviously not assuming you want to use it for motion picture”
Watching this after CES 2022, the future is now.
Nice video!
Crazy, I remember watching this, just bought the 65" mini led 8 series half off for 1000$
mLED and QLED (self-emissive) have the potential to destroy OLED. Both technologies are inorganic and don't suffer from image retention, ghosting, burn-in effect and can go brighter while consuming less power. And they offer better, more consistent off-axis viewing. All while offering a longer lifespan. I know it will take years before these technologies become widely available and affordable, but I can't wait.
Vylkeer I dont know about QLED but MLED looks to be even better than OLED
Thanks for answering all my questions I had been wondering about. The only issue is that it’s not available until maybe 2020? Oh, how many nits of brightness can it put out if used with HDR 10(+)?
QLED is NOT self-emissive at the moment and mLED can suffer from burn in too.
mLED cannot suffer from burn-in, it's the main point of it. If I wrote self-emissive it means I'm referring to the self-emissive QLEDs coming in 2 - 3 years, you genius.
Wait and see ;) every self emmissive display will suffer from burn in, Samsung is only good in marketing because they know they fucked up the OLED market and already lost it. Samsung Galaxy Phones have burn in issues too and surprise they use a different OLED technique. I for myself have an old Nexus 5 with an IPS Panel AND burn in. So i would not say that only self emmissive displays can burn in, LCDs aswell (VA is more stable but yeah).
Looks like its going to be great for large screens, like at a concert, but maybe not so great for up close viewing.
Randy Parsons Micro LED’s are very finely placed next to each other , probably even closer than pixels hence the Microscope to show that. These are not the typical LED screens used commercially with big round LEDs , these are mere super tiny dots.
I really hope Samsung and Sony invest R&D into this , it clearly looks to be the future , i wonder what the input lag and response times could be on 28 inches :P
Wow...was reading the comments getting so worried thinking I'm making a mistake buying an lg 55 in CX with the c1 coming out next month. OLED tech compared to the qled gets smashed every time unless your in a sun room
This TV looks so good on my LCD screen.
My OLED is too dimm for great HDR consumption in brighter scenes and QLED in gaming mode with its bad local dimming performance just isn‘t doing the black properly.
I want MicroLED right NOW! 😩
OLED $1500
MicroLED $150,000
Heard they may bring out first TVs with this tech next year, hopefully that's the case. Have a Vizio P65-C1 which has been great, but so look forward to perfect blacks. Game alot so OLED is not viable.
Does Micro LED use PWM like OLED or is it flicker-free?
We need a motionblur free technology again! Static resolution is great but motionresolution is still bad compared to crt and most plasma tv's.
What are "gred pixels" ?
OLED TVs are finally becoming somewhat affordable. Are MicroLED TVs more expensive to produce?
mmlzz805 Right now yes, in the long term they will be cheaper than OLED
Not if Samsung can help it lol
They will most likely start out with a hefty price tag, as any new display technology does. However I can imagine it will be much easier and more reliable to produce because it doesn't depend on organic materials. Currently only about 60% of OLED panels that are produced are able to be sold because the failure rate in manufacturing is so high. OLEDs have to be expensive to make up for that massive failure rate.
Yes and hard to get down to 55 and 65 inch screen sizes.
Micro led is problably 10 years away. It till a very long time för Oled and its still more expansiv than lcd
It's not the "O" part of OLED that anybody cares about, it's the elimination of backlights, self-lighting pixels for perfect black levels and viewing angles, low power consumption, and bending/folding ability. If that can be achieved without organic compounds then hooray bring it on, but until then OLED is here and does its job better than other displays currently available
Idve seen it times years ago in a shop, from Samsung, was pretty thicc but man, That was a lot better than Oled. Still waiting that Micro Led get more affordorable at 65 inch TV next time, so I can Upgrade from IPS pannel.
I don't think a lot of people here understand MicroLED. It's not MiniLED or QLED. It's pretty much what makes OLED so great. Complete blacks, no backlight with subpixels, but without the drawbacks of OLED. The whole reason we have OLED is because you couldn't make non organic LEDs that small. This technology though is still a decade away most likely.
2:06 You can see the tiles of mini screens that make the big screen? I'm out. Ill stick to my 65 inch sony OLED
What do you mean "I'll stick to my 65 inch Sony OLED"? Even now these TV's are over $100k. Were you ever in the market for a six figure TV?
@@jaketapper8910 Not now, I just mean if this screen technology ever gets down to an affordable level and it has these kinds of problems im out.
oh hey there's bonobo playing in the background
I feel like OLED TVs have been hyped for over 7 years but we are still seeing TVs all above the $1,000+ range. It has been such a slow process to mass produce at affordable price ranges. What a shame. When you hear about MicoLED it makes you excited... until you realize it will most likely turn out like OLED. Where you won't see affordable sets for 7+ years. Furthermore MicroLED won't have any competition so prices can be kept high.
I wrote i comment with the thought that this video is uploaded in 2020 and writing that i cant wait unti to 2022😅. Anyways if micro led comes these year i ll definetely get it cuz will be the best overall
Imagine if the galaxy s10 has micro led. That'd be awesome, but unlikely to happen anytime soon
LED also use a lot less energy, in TV not as big of a deal, but smart watch, phones it will. Battery life will be greatly improved.
why don't companies make Anamorphic ratio TV'S instead of typical The 16:9 ratio. I mean all movies are made with the Anamorphic ratio that is why we get the black bars un top and bottom of the Film. it be better the Screen would be widder giving a panoramic feel like an IMAX ratio point of view.
ASTEROIDALAIN because most people watch regular TV and sports more than they watch movies. And not all movies are in Cinemascope format.
Is “the wall” 18:9?
After 3 years of the video being uploaded we are finally only 5 years away from Micro LED hitting the market. I guess I’ll go with either SONY A90J or LG G1 when they drop for now. And if burn in happens I can buy Micro LED TV that hopefully will last for a very very long time.
Good strategy. My Sony Bravia from 2009 is still working great although it is now beginning to show signs of aging.
Now make a 4k, 21:9, 144Hz, VESA adaptive sync compatible, VESA mountable, HDR10+ compatible, 34" monitor at a sub-$1200 price tag! Preferably with mLED for great contrast ans color reproduction.
still waiting for the micro led apple watch
If I was to give it another name the is cool it QOLED Quantum Dot Organic Light Emitting Diode because it gives you the epic blacks of OLED and epic colour of QLED
My new LG b7 oled purchase will do me nicely until M-LED hits the shops is affordable
Did you get burn in?
If Samsung can bring it, maybe MicroLED will be my next set.. But for now, OLED it is.
What about reaction time, is it like good old tube?
What could be faster than sending a signal to a synthetic LED to emit light? Certainly faster than a light gun that draws hundreds of scanlines every refresh.
@TheLegend MicroLED response times are measured in nanoseconds...
@TheLegend Having the best response times is only one benefit of MicroLED-what's more important is not having burn-in, being low power consumption, wafer-thin, and both incredibly bright yet completely black (infinite contrast), which allows for the widest possible colour gamut. The current downsides are cost and size (temporary problems).
i love this guy. makes me want to buy crap i dont need
yeah... that is not coming anytime soon... at least not in the 55-65 inch size TVs and not at a better pixel pitch than 0.9mm ....
The biggest problem is that Samsung comes up with new TV tech every year, "It's the latest and greatest" each year. (although it isn't) then the next year, the previous year's technology is gone, and we have something "newer and better." It's simple marketing that the general consumer falls for... Maybe eventually consumers will see it and stop buying into it. I agree Samsung TV's are great, however due to how they promote them and the information I said above, I won't buy one. You don't feel like it's ever worth it because you're tv isn't as good the next year. Look at OLED, it's been the best available for about 4 years now. OLED has been fine turning its imagine over that 4 year span, it doesn't come out with OLED one year, then eliminate it for something else the next.
Lets filter some of this tech to computer monitors aye?
I hope it's faster than OLED for monitors, we been getting scraps at a higher cost.
you talked about oled burn in, but did not say if micro led could have burn in
How?
Dead pixels? Probably!
Next year for sure
Hmm, can microled use for flexible display?
not right now, probably not in the near future
The oled killer
in 8-10 years, maybe..
Burn-in is the oled killer 🤫
This technology is in Shape lcd aquos panel
South koreans are worried about a possible conflict with the north, so it delays their projection to upgrade their technologies for the future.
This video is 5 years old, and I would love to have a MicroLed TV with me right now.
Should be good for monitors with no lag vs oled monitors everyone wants for gaming.
It's like the old day's HD or Blu-ray.🤣🤣🤣
Review mi TV 4
I've been questioning why hasn't this been done before, "Why not just use really small normal LEDs for TVs?"
waiting for my gaming microLED monitor, 240hz 0.001grey to grey response time.
Just because an LCD is lit by LED's does NOT make it an LED display.
Buyers are always subjective and only prefer their beloved brand technicians on the other side are more or less objective and can tell a real difference between a good technology bad technology, good picture reproduction bad picture reproduction etc.
I hope they start with 1080p tv panels..
1080p is already low resolution and finished. I wouldn't even think about buying a screen below 1440p, and wouldn't be truly happy with anything below 2160p.
Big Blue Frontend most T.V.s are 4k now
I hope they start with 1080p panels as well because we don't need more resolution, what we need is outstanding contrast ratio. Contrast ratio trumps resolution every time!!! Uneducated people think it's about higher resolution when in fact that couldn't be further from the truth. 4k is OVERKILL resolution for the majority of people in the home as a 55" screen is about as large as most people would want to go for the living space in their entertainment area. As most I watch TV 10' from the screen not 3' from it.
@@youtubesuresuckscock below 4k?
when do you need something above 4k?
1440p is still plenty ok. 4k is ... a bonus. 8k is unnecessary af
Have a C6 OLED for 10 months now. Still a great tv. Not interested in any of the 2018 range so far. Micro LED is very interesting tech. But it's not out for another 2-3 years.
therider04 hi there have the c6 to..wondering has it got dolby vision?
Shradrack dingle yep Dolby Vision and has 3D.
therider04 dont worry OLED is the future technology this reviewer is being paid by samsung watch CNET WHATHIFI. Samsung always making customers dumb lying about “LED” “QLED” now “MICRO LED” but same old LCD screen
No, Samsung releases MicroLED TVs this march globally.
donchuanism is that a joke lol?
It's a future of displays
They had micro-LED 6 years ago?danmm
Just imagine playing GTA V with that screen. You'll be murdering people scaled to size. Lol
This seems cool if you can use it to immerse yourself in. Use a treadmill and run through scenaries.
Samsung lied about QLED but not MicroLED so it's almost time to say goodbye to LG's OLED TV
Micro LED create it's own light source, kinda like plasma. And OLED display has burn Inn, kinda like plasma.
2012 tech of sony crystaled qled is just a rebrand of triluminos of sony.
Sony manufactured and sold oled and fexible screens way back 2006 fyi..
Future is miniLED’s and Q-Ned
This video is getting old. Lgc1 is awesome. Qd Oled is almost perfect for me. I always liked Samsung, but they're are not keeping up even with the s95b.
I can see those special effects in the TV in my laptop, soooo ?
Arun Benny you don't have a tv in your laptop
MicroLED = MLED
OrganicLED = OLED
QuantumLED = QLED
QLED = LCD = dated as fuck
Is it cheaper??????
I'm pretty sure what they are showing in comparison are QLED TV's. OLED doesn't have a backlight and is not 'just a lcd tv'.
I'm seeing here that they can be compared. I understand that microLED is basically the advanced LED that can provide similar images as OLED but without its drawbacks. And both are without backlight. I'm getting that it's basically the same approach but with different materials. One is organic another is not, it's the same thing as its parent only smaller.
That if i got the video well enough.
When microLED monitors PC?
Maybe next year
I just bought a new monitor so . . . ummm hopefully never? If I cant buy it, none of you can!!!!! muhahahah!
keggerous don't act rich bro
Daniel Boos did you even read his reply. he said he just bought a new monitor so he doesn’t want to spend money on another monitor that’s mLED.
Actually, PC sized monitors (30" or smaller) are going to be the last ones to show up, because the biggest challenge behind MicroLED is making them small enough without costing a fortune to make. It'll be easier and cheaper to make larger MicroLED screens than smaller ones. That's what's weird about this tech; it's the first time a screen technology is cheaper the larger it gets because the main manufacturing challenge is getting the size down.
So does it look better he never said
Realistically is Samsung did oled they would have wasted billions of 💷 investing in led technology.
I was going to by an oled tv however LG warranty doesn't cover screen burn. Also oled his an organic and may have a 10 year life.
Samsung was probably not sure they just invested into something which is proven to be better but it's Gona take a big factory to manacfacture micro led while LG has got better with yields on OLED I this Oled was made as a show of proof that we can have pure blacks in 2018
meanwhile samsung tv's last 3 years on average ... hahaha
Have to say, just looking at the MLED behind the narrator, the colours don’t look good at all, really washed out, but hay like you say it’s just a prototype ATM, maybe it will get better.!.?
The future is here
So we gone wait some years for Samsung to make something look as good as OLED ? No thanks Oled is very cheap right now . And all these burn in problems are mostly gone .
To much of a risk with oled.
MLED
Forget this. I’m waiting for super duper micro mini yaya screen 📺 technology with 20 trillion billion super duper lights per 1 billionth of an inch for super dee super blacks and 50 septillion colors on a 50 foot screen. Oh and 1024k.
Didn't Sony do this a few years back?
Yep back in 2012 and it still has the highest PPI of any demoed MicroLED display in the world.
ما فينا نرجع لورا و نصلح اللي جري
So Micro led is an Oled with no burn-in?
maybe yes, but this tech seems slow to come out
Who all are here after watching CES2021 ?
The industry will move towards Quantum Dot technology rather than MicroLED
This thing won't take off anytime soon nor replace the current mainstream standard of LED tv's which is what every one can afford at this time, ok got it.
Soo funny how everyone was shitting on Samsung for QLED when they were working on this~
brandy ブランドン to bad they are late on it. Sony started micro led in 2012
Matthew Dennert Duh, If you meant "Cledis" then you must know that was not a consumer product of Sony. I doubt if it still is in 2018
