Had it as a kid. Amazing set. Older sets were so very... 3D. Forts, towers, castles on elevated bases. And what is very important it was all LEGO ideas not licensed sets.
I've got this set for Christmas 1989 and eventually my older Brother did dismantle this set to exploit useful parts for his Lego war machines only to let me know who's boss.
I finally reclaimed this set almost 2 years ago and still fulfilling and I added more foliage to forestate the island more with extra palm trees and prickly bushes. These days I have a crocodile living in the pond.
My parents couldn’t afford to get me the Black Seas Barracuda (understandably), but they got me this one for my 9th or 10th birthday and I loved the heck out of it. Thanks so much for these amazing reviews.
Awesome, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I didn’t have the Barracuda as a kid, either, or any other large sets... but today, thank goodness for eBay! 😄👍
I wish I had this
@@jygako I did.
christopher lockery Thanks for the flex
I had it as a child and this island. Didn't really played with it though so I sold it after some years. While I have kept most of my LEGO, I never regretted selling the ship because my dad's colleague bought it and he had been looking for that exact model. Don't know if it was for his kid or not, but I do know it went to someone that would truly appreciate it.
i had so many fights between this island and the Caribbean Clipper growing up. including times where i had the pirates steal the ship and maroon the crew on the island. :)
I don’t know if it’s just rose tinted glasses, but there is something very special about these earlier lego sets. They are somewhat bare bones when looked at closely, but they are charming and endearing to say the least.
This was my first somewhat-large set. I either got it for my birthday or Christmas in '89 so either way I was 5. I rebuilt that set dozens of times, always dug out of the collection of pieces from all our sets, which of course was constantly growing larger. I don't remember doing any changes or add-ons, as I loved it so much for what it was.
I had the pieces in a Tupperware bin of mixed Lego that I got at a yard sale from one of my neighbours during my childhood, I wish I still had all the pieces from that bin.
I only ever had two bluecoat figures, so the blue jacket/striped shirt pirates make up my Royal Navy sailors with the actual bluecoats as the officers (plus the 2009 Governor Broadside as the captain). And then I have the redcoats as the Royal Marines.
Incredible what a volume and mass they could accomplish with less than 200 pieces. Had it as a kid and I remember it fondly:)
They definitely used to make more with less back then in the classic lego sets.
Glad that more vids are coming! Been waiting for this. Wishing more growth for the channel!
Thanks, Clarence! I’m trying to put out one video a week, but sometimes adult responsibilities get in the way. 😄
Thanks again for watching! 😎👍
This set was in the first box of Legos we got from a garage sale, which ended up being the source of most of our Legos growing up. I loved it, but it always infuriated me that one or two pieces were missing, so I couldn't 100% rebuild it.
This was my favorite set as a kid; just classic play elements for a lego set.
This was my first lego set. Got it when I was 4 in 1992 as a gift for becoming a big brother. Thinking about getting barracuda bay for the nostalgia
Thanks for sharing the treasure tip for Bricklink, that's a very good idea!
Glad I could help! 😄 The only problem is that people seem to want about $.20 a coin on average, so it can get kinda expensive, haha...
@@TrikBrix In that case, you're not helping anyone :D :D
😆 I know...
you should continue to the videos. they are perfect
I love this channel!
One thing to notice about the "stairs leading into the ocean". Check instruction cover picture. It shows that the initial size od the Island was... Bigger by one stud (sand starts 2 studs instead of 3 studs). I wonder why final base plate island print shrinked by one stud. It must have been last minute change.
Good eye! I think if he reversed the base plate, it would be accurate to that image. There seems to be more sand on one side and more water on the other. I’d be curious to see if this would resolve the stairs in ocean oddness.
@@oli1682 I have this set and this is not the same print as on the cover art. The base is symmetrical BUT the prints is 1 stud smaller. This is interesting why. Also important to note that there are starters for first bricks printed on the base (white dots) so there is no way to build this set in a different orientation to the print itself. Stair studs starts in water even though they start on land on the cover art. The whole island is just 1 stud smaller...
@@michaciemniewski9791 oh well, was hoping it was just a mistake. Thanks for the explanation. Still a charming set, even if the steps lead into the ocean.
@@oli1682 this is interesting why that is but I can imagine stairs leading into the sea. You can get into the boat or something like this.
Excellent. Love it.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! 😎👍
Aah, good memories, my very first Lego Pirates set I received as a 8 year old...my brother got the Carribean Clipper so we could battle each other. Lego at that timeframe was so much more exciting than the modern day commercial stuff...
Awesome video, still! I hope you're well. Happy & successful 2024
Awesome set! A small sailcloth tent would be a great addition. I think the shark’s name should be “Sushi “!
Good ideas! 😊👍
This was the start of my collection
A nice medium-sized set. The advantage is definitely a rope bridge. Prestige is also added by the stork's nest. Would I change something? Well, in my opinion, the center of the island with a lake is undeveloped (seen at 2:55). Manufacturers could add something like set 8397 (Pirate Survival) in this place. Also observation platforms (over the dungeon) could be more interestingly arranged (eg boxes with additional weapons, or mask positions through plants). And yes, more palms would add charm (as seen in 7:43). Anyway, this set remains a great complement to the series.
This is really cool - it’s another set that I remember vividly from my childhood! One of my friends had it :-D seeing now it seems a little more bare bones than I remember it. It’s still cool though :-) I had one of the comic books back in the day - don’t remember if I still have it?! Thanks for sharing this and keep up the good work :-) (PS: I think the shark should be called Sharpy Smith :-D!)
Thanks for watching! I vaguely remember seeing this on store shelves and thinking it would be huge... funny how our perspectives change over time.
And good shark name! 😎👍
TrikBrix yeah - it’s actually a little weird too!
Had this as a kid. Never loved it like as much as others though - think I found it a bit 'hollow'. Thanks for the vid!
I like it, but there’s definitely a better pirate hideout option in Rock Island Refuge... which I’ll be reviewing soon! And thank YOU for watching! 😎👍
Never managed to get this one, but I always think it should be combined with the episode two one of this serie, so you can off-set this kit it's build and get that staircase on the other island.
It's not as if you can't use the wand to get up & down that tower.
What is missing, is a way to use the watering hole in the middle of this island, IF it's freshwater, that is.
And always weird they never made a mortar, you know.
Would have been perfect for fortifications & so on.
Out of the two first "pirate islands", I prefer Rock Island Refuge - but this one is fine too.
I agree - RIR is a far superior build. Bigger, more pieces, more minifigs... it’s probably in my Top 5 favorite Pirate sets.
But I had to do this one first, since we’re beginning with the original collection of sets, from 1989. Rock Island Refuge came out in ‘91. But rest assured, I’m totally stoked about doing a RIR review as soon as I can! 😎👍
Great set
Agreed! 😎👍
The name for the shark is jaws
Dun dun dun dun dun... 😄👍 Good thinking!
@@TrikBrix What about 'Bruce'? And no I'm not just thinking about 'Finding Nemo'.....
Waiting for the Rock Island Refuge review.
I just added RIR to my collection, so you’ll definitely see a review of it soon, once we get through the original 1989 sets. Thanks for watching! 😎👍
@@TrikBrix Sounds great
i have this set, sadly somewhere along time i lost the top part of the mast and i hate that i dont have it. i wish i could find one to replace it with
If this guy was still alive he would have loved pirates of barracuda bay
My one of those had a board game with it.
Are you gonna be reviewing early 2000s Lego theme sets? Like the original 2000 Knights Kingdom 1 theme? Cuz I have a massive soft spot for that theme, especially the sets focused on the Bull Bandits.
I’m not positive, but I’d definitely like to do a Castle retrospective at some point, with both newer and old sets.
sharks name i think is sharky
Another exemplary video!
Thanks, Steven! Glad you liked it!
My aunt owns this set, but it was missing parts.
his name is sharkey the shark
Quick Questions:
Are you going to be more of a Retrospective channel only reviewing retro sets, or will you gradually move on and review some more recent sets?
If you do plan to review some recent sets and themes how recent are the themes going to be, early 2000's 90's 2001 to 2012?
Good question! One of my first reviews was of last year’s Jurassic Park Velociraptor Chase, and it’s by far my least viewed video, lol. 😄 There are just so many good reviews of new releases; hard to compete with Jangbricks.
I think I’ll be sticking to mostly 80s & 90s stuff for a while, because there are a ton of sets that have yet to get a high quality review, but there are definitely a few more modern sets I’d like to take a look at, and may throw one in every now and then.
As of right now, though, the most recent theme I definitely plan on covering is Orient Expedition from 2003, as part of the Adventurers Retrospective.
@@TrikBrix Ok good to know, thanks for clearing it up.
This is a pretty affordable set :) even today
The shark’s name is Sharky McSharkface
Have you got any Indian Sets ? (Western Theme)
I have most of the parts I need for Rain Dance Ridge, but that’s about it. Right now I’m trying to complete my Adventurers Jungle collection so I can start on Season 2 of that. But the Indian sets are definitely on my radar!
@@TrikBrix Wait you dont have full sets ? You buying Bricks And build it ? So crazy :D
#HypeLegoWestern2k19
Lol, no, just missing a few parts after all these years. The only time I piece together a set is if i already have some of the parts and it’s cheaper to just buy the missing bricks.
I got this for $50 recently, is this a good deal?
but it was 98% complete
Sharky the shark
Thanks for the shout-out! If you want to read one of the original comics. the Lego Instructions database at www.brickfactory.info has an English copy available in the Pirates section of their themes page. Highly recommend checking it out.
Excellent! I’ll definitely check that out. Thanks again! 😎👍
Call it JAWS
Haha, good thinking!
This set is OK, but it has nothing on the Rock Island Refuge
Agreed - RIR is just plain awesome! One of my favorites! 😎👍
TrikBrix Great channel Sir. The Pirates was my favorite Lego category. I never did get the RIR.
Chompy
The world's greatest sin is that Lego replaced their classic monkey design
Probably my favorite base out of the Pirates theme. It was so cool and that base plate is timeless.
Definitely a cool one! I’m partial to the larger Rock Island Refuge, but this one is no slouch! 😎👍
Wasn't a similar one released later on?,
@@smb-c3poyes,I don't recall the name though.
@@trontosaurusrex9532 You could try looking it up.
@@TrikBrix Jamie, why haven't you been uploading lately?
Another great one. I see ya gained a few subscribers. Absolutly deserved.
Also I can't wait to see more. It's just fantastic
Thank you! And, yes, the channel is growing nicely. Thanks for watching! 😎👍
this is my personal favorite set
An excellent choice! 😎👍
Your channel is great. Just subbed
Thanks so much, Sam! Glad you’re enjoying it! 😎👍
Love your vids
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying them! 😎👍
Joseph the shark
How about darkgo .
Wait a minute, there was a comic about this pirate theme? As in that there was a LEGO magazine being released each month and that these guys had a comic in them? Or was there a comic book in each of the sets (like LEGO superheroes used to have)
Ps: Love that you put the previous small Shipwreck island set together with this one!
I think there were a few comics released, but I’m not sure that they were monthly. I know the first one was sold at retail and included a pair of minifigs and a few accessories.
And, interestingly, the artwork looked nothing like LEGO, but just shared the names of the characters.
@@TrikBrix There were four other stories that followed the one shot that you just mentioned in your comment, however they weren't comics, but rather small hardcover books published by Ladybird, a children's book company based in the UK.
I subbed and I just bought 6 old red imperial soldiers from 1992
Nice! You can never have to many Imperial Soldiers! Thanks for subscribing! 😎👍
The shark name: jawil ;)
Good one! 😎👍
Awesome Set! I made a video and it's about LEGO Pirates Forbidden Island!
Sweet! It’s one of my favorite sets! 😎👍
Thank You! I got it from theplasticbrick.com along time ago. I have a collection of LEGO Pirates.
I hawe instraction for this set!
