  • Saga Dawa Heart Sutra Recitation, 4-5 June 2020, Global
    薩嘎達瓦《心經》全球誦讀活動,2020年6月4-5 日
At the request of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, this is a new choral arrangement of the Heart Sutra presented as a "virtual choir." It was sung as separate tracks by over thirty participants in ten different countries, which were then edited together to create the choral arrangement. The video was produced and edited using Zoom and broadcast across the world on Zoom, CZcams and Facebook Live for 24 hours to commemorate Saga Dawa Düchen, the day where Buddha's birth, enlightenment and parinirvana is celebrated across the world. The melody is based off of a musical setting of the "Nilakantha Dharani," a dharani associated with Avalokiteshvara in Japanese Buddhism, written by Kanho Yakushiji, a Zen priest. The English translation of the Heart Sutra was done by the Nalanda Translation Committee, the video editing by Sophie Perks and the choral arrangement by Harry Einhorn. Produced for the Heart Sutra recitation with the intention of pacifying the turmoil of the world at this time, in the words of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, “May we invoke love, kindness, and healing, and open our hearts for the earth.”

    THE SÝTRA OF THE HEART
    OF TRANSCENDENT KNOWLEDGE
Thus have I heard. Once the Blessed One was dwelling in Råjagôiha at Vulture Peak mountain, together with a great gathering of the saðgha of monks and a great gathering of the saðgha of bodhisattvas. At that time the Blessed One entered the samådhi that expresses the dharma called “profound illumination,” and at the same time noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahåsattva, while practicing the profound prajñåpåramitå, saw in this way: he saw the five skandhas to be empty of nature.
Then, through the power of the Buddha, venerable Shåriputra said to noble Avaloki- teshvara, the bodhisattva mahåsattva, “How should a son or daughter of noble family train, who wishes to practice the profound prajñåpåramitå?”
Addressed in this way, noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahåsattva, said to venerable Shåriputra, “O Shåriputra, a son or daughter of noble family who wishes to practice the profound prajñåpåramitå should see in this way: seeing the five skandhas to be empty of nature. Form is emptiness; emptiness also is form. Emptiness is no other than form; form is no other than emptiness. In the same way, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are emptiness. Thus, Shåriputra, all dharmas are emptiness. There are no characteristics. There is no birth and no cessation. There is no impurity and no purity. There is no decrease and no increase. Therefore, Shåriputra, in emptiness, there is no form, no feeling, no perception, no formation, no consciousness; no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind; no appearance, no sound, no smell, no taste, no touch, no dharmas; no eye dhåtu up to no mind dhåtu, no dhåtu of dharmas, no mind consciousness dhåtu; no ignorance, no end of ignorance up to no old age and death, no end of old age and death; no suffering, no origin of suffering, no cessation of suffering, no path, no wisdom, no attainment, and no nonattainment. Therefore, Shåriputra, since the bodhisattvas have no attainment, they abide by means of prajñåpåramitå. Since there is no obscuration of mind, there is no fear. They transcend falsity and attain complete nirvåïa. All the buddhas of the three times, by means of prajñåpåramitå, fully awaken to unsurpassable, true, complete enlightenment. Therefore, the great mantra of prajñåpåramitå, the mantra of great insight, the unsurpassed mantra, the unequaled mantra, the mantra that calms all suffering, should be known as truth, since there is no deception. The prajñåpåramitå mantra is said in this way:
OÎ GATE GATE PÅRAGATE PÅRASAÎGATE BODHI SVÅHÅ
Thus, Shåriputra, the bodhisattva mahåsattva should train in the profound prajñå- påramitå.”
Then the Blessed One arose from that samådhi and praised noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahåsattva, saying, “Good, good, O son of noble family; thus it is, O son of noble family, thus it is. One should practice the profound prajñåpåramitå just as you have taught and all the tathågatas will rejoice.”
When the Blessed One had said this, venerable Shåriputra and noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahåsattva, that whole assembly and the world with its gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One.
Lotsåwa bhikúhu Rinchen De translated this text into Tibetan with the Indian païçita Vimalamitra. It was edited by the great editor-lotsåwas Gelo, Namkha, and others. This Tibetan text was copied from the fresco in Gegye Chemaling at the glorious Samye vihåra. It has been translated into English by the Nålandå Translation Committee, with reference to several Sanskrit editions.

THE SUTRA OF THE HEART OF TRANSCENDENT KNOWLEDGE
Thus have I heard . Once the Bles sed One was dwelling in Raja gri ha at Vul ture Peak moun tain, to ge ther with a great ga ther ing of the sangha of monks and a great ga ther ing of the sangha of bodhi satt vas. Then, through the po wer of the Bud dha, ve ner able Shar ipu tra said to no ble A va loki tesh vara, the bodhi satt va ma ha sattva, “ How should a son or daugh ter of no ble family train ,who wish es to prac tice the prof ound prajña pa rami ta ?”
Addressed in this way, no ble A va lokit esh vara, the bodhi satt va ma ha sattva, said to ve ner able Sha ripu tra , “O Sha ri putra, a son or daugh ter of no ble fami ly who wish es to prac tice the pro found prajña pa rami ta should see in this way: see ing the five skandhas to be emp ty of na ture . Form is emp tiness; emp tiness al so is form . Empti ness is no oth er than form ; form is no other than empti ness . In the same way, fee ling , percep tion , forma tion, and con scious ness are emp tiness. Thus , Shari pu tra, all dhar mas are emp tiness. There are no char acter is tics. There is no birth a nd no ces sa tion. There is no im pur ity and no pur it y. There is no de crease and no in crease. There fore , Shari pu tra, in emp tiness, there is no form , no fee ling , no perc ep tion, no for mation, no conscious ness ; no eye, no ear, no nose , no tongue, no body, no mind ; no app earance, no sound, no smell , no taste, no touch, no dharm as; no eye dhatu up to no mind dhatu, no dhatu of dharmas, no mind con scious ness dha tu ; no ig nor ance, no end of ig nor ance up to no old age and death, no end of old age and

There fore, Sha ri putra, since the bo dhi sattvas have no at tainm ent, they a bide by means of pra jña para mi ta. Since there is no ob scura tion of mind, there is no fear . They tran scend falsi ty and at tain complete nir vana. All the bud dhas of the three times, by means of praj ña para mi ta, ful ly awa ken to un sur passa ble , true, com plete enligh ten ment. The praj ña para mi ta man tra is said in this way:
OM GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SVAHA Thus , Shari pu tra, the bo dhisatt va mahas att va should train in the pro found pra jña para mi ta.”
Then the Blessed One arose from that sa ma dhi and praised noble A valo ki teshva ra , the bo dhi sattva ma hasatt va , saying, “ Good , good, O son of no ble family; thus it is, O son of no ble fami ly , thus it is . One should prac tice the pro found pra jña para mi ta just as you have taught and all the tathag a tas will re joice.”
