    Hi Zac. What I like about the build, regardless of the wood type used, is that it makes its own quiet statement in the room. It's not loud, but it lets you know. I think it's the solidness that speaks out.
    Good job.

    I definitely agree with your verdict on the PolyShades. On paper it sounds like it would be more convenient similar to a paint and primer, but the finish mixed in to the stain makes it more difficult to work with. I stopped using it after a couple projects

    • @miket2120
      @miket2120 Před rokem +1

      Totally agree with you. It's not bad for small projects (those little IKEA wood boxes come to mind), but anything larger I can't get an even coloring on them. Then there is the finish build issue. I usually put at least 4-5 coats of regular poly on, but you can't with PolyShades as each coat it gets darker. By the time I get enough finish build, it's way too dark.

    For the yanks in the audience, that 250 Canadian Dollars is more like 40 US Dollars. :>
    What's really missing on youtube is budget milling. Taking cheap lumber and making it square on a budget. I'd love to see that. Great video as usual.

    I agree with your thoughts on the polyshades finish. I used the black colour to match an artificial wood finish on a table and it’s a very challenging finish to apply and get quality results.

    Maybe if you applied some blue tape before drilling the holes and after inserting the dowels, the saw wouldn't scratch the stain. I haven't tried it but I thing it might work. For this build maybe it was more trouble, but for a build with a more time consuming staining job it could have been helpful.

    Enjoyed the video/build. I use the same conditioner on all soft woods. Not perfect, but works pretty good. Agree with your assessment of the stain/finish combo. Same issues when I used it. I am considering different ideas for shop shelving. Don't want the standard all metal gorilla shelves. I may be able to adapt this for what I need/want. As far as the Toronto area give away, I have a friend living in Toronto and it would be prefect for him. Maybe I can see it once all the COVID restrictions are lifted.

    Love, love, love your projects and super appreciate the detailed materials lists and advice. I also had a unfavorable experience with the combo stain and finish. I sanded the whole thing clean and re-stained and finishing with separate processes.

    I've done a few projects with the through-dowel-joinery recently. I found that taping off the whole face of the saw behind the teeth with some painters tape gives just enough offset that the dowel still comes off flush but without marring the surface - ar at least not nearly as badly if it does.

Keep up the good work Zac! 2 questions for you though .... 1) why did you choose to put in the dowels from the "outside" instead of hiding them on the inside of your butt joints? and 2) what did you do for a "makers mark"? You didn't show that step and I'd like to see your "brand". :-) Cheers!

    • @ZacBuilds
      @ZacBuilds  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks berry and good questions! I did the dowels from the outside for 2 reasons, 1 it's just easier and I wanted to keep the build as accessible as possible and 2 the screws I used on the original were visible from the outside so I wanted to keep the dowels visibile as an homage. I was hoping they would contrast a little bit more so they were more visible, but apparently poplar stains very similarly to pine haha. And for 2) I used a branding iron, a simple electric heated one. I really wanted to include that in this video, but the footage got messed up so I had to scrap it. I plan to do a video about how to use a branding iron ASAP though, so keep an eye out for that!

    Love your videos! Question... in your shop, you have some GREAT lumber storage racks. Where did you find these? Keep up good work!

      Thanks Joanna! My dad actually made those lumber racks himself by cutting steel angle iron, like I used in this video, and welding them together

    Nice build!
    In retrospect, which stain would you recommend? I can't really go with big expensive nice looking wood, and I often have to stay with pine which is boring :( Just trying to find a cheap solution to make my appartment look nicer :)

    Your detailed imgur album + YT video is goated for real. Even if I don't win hope to learn for future projects.

    If I end up making one of these for my next apartment I'll have to tag you on Instagram! Too bad I'm not in Toronto so I can't enter. Minnnesota is close but not close enough :(
