If you re watch the scene you should see the su 57 fire it's missile right as it explodes. They have the missile explode immediately after it's fired. That is impossible to do in the sim or in real life

He likely fired the missile last second because he needed to pick up the pace with a new threat on his RWR, but they had tunnel vision for far to long to realize how much the tables had turned against them.

And even if the F-14 Tomcat was outdated it somehow destroyed two Su-57's. There really is no excuse for Maverick's impossible survival except for plot armor. Actually he shouldn't have made it that far since he would've been destroyed seconds after he began the fight. The Su-57 was hit again with plot when somehow an F-18 was able to sneak up on him even though he is advanced enough to easily detect it and somehow didn't realize a missile was fired even though he has the equipment that notifies him a missile was fired. They literally hyped up the aircraft only to make it out like stormtroopers from Star Wars, talk about disrespectful.
Not true dude..read about the Tomcat with fail engine at catapult launch. Even the Sr-71 can recover from 1 engine fail at mach 3, and in fact the engine intake is designed to loose and recover correct airflow as normal operation.
I loved this scene so much. We figured they were not going to die, or at least Rooster wouldn't. I had absolutely no idea how they were going to get out of the situation though. They did the music perfectly to add the emotion as to what was happening. Those bell tolls though.

I wonder why the Su-57 lasted so long. The AESA radar on a modern F-18 is more than capable of detecting and acquiring an Su-57 at a considerable distance away.

The F14 is particular, when an engine goes out on landing. Reminds me of the P38 "Lightning", engine out on take off....Deadly if the pilot does not know what will happen.
The first time I saw tgM and saw the engine of the tomcat go out i was confused how maverick could still fly in a straight line, because most of the time when one of a tomcats engine would go out it would go in an un-recoverable flat spin.

However, if using just mil-power (highest throttle without afterburner) then the pilot can counter the yaw from one working engine with the rudders and the F-14 in TGM was on approach to land on the carrier so no way it was on full burner. That's what I read though, so don't take this as expert opinion.
This is a scenario when landing that pilots needed to be trained to counter. So they would not crash if an engine flamed out while landing or taking off. It was later concluded she did not follow the correct procedure to stabilize, and was killed when the plane rolled over and she ejected straight into the water. Kara Hultgreen was a F-14 pilot who had this happen to her, the engine flamed out and the plane departed control. The RIO pulled the ejection handle to start the sequence. The rear seat went first, unfortunately the spin of the plane meant that when the Pilot seat went, the plane was inverted so Kara Hultgreen was shot straight into the water, killing her.
I left like 3 minutes early to beat traffic, it was a packed theatre, but this looks exactly like how it was going to end but just redone in a video game.
Well, since everything after the Mach 10.3 explosion was just Maverick's dying dream this alternate ending doesn't make sense. In the moments before losing consciousness and dying, this was Maverick's mind putting his life regrets in order. He had to succeed in a mad mission with an unnamed enemy. Ever wonder why not ONE person recognizes him as "the fastest man alive" after the crash? Because in the rest of the movie, it had never happened. He was dead. No one survives a Mach 10 ejection. Much less a massive airframe failure at Mach 10! No one ever has, nor will they. Not even Jack Reacher.

Honestly, the only thing that really irritated me was the idea that the alert fighters, since everyone agreed the mission was a one chance opportunity, were in F18s rather than F35s. Their role would have been air defense and there's no comparison between the two ships in that role.
Interesting point. Probably, the writers assumed that the audience would not be able to track that many aircraft names and types. You show some good knowledge by IDing the F18s and F35s, but it's sort of like adding too many characters in a movie for a lay audience
There are 3 reasons for this: 1. The Navy didn't let Tom Cruise and his team pilot the jets themselves. A qualified US Navy pilot has to be the one piloting it. So filming have to be done in a way where the actors sits in the WSO seat. The F18 Super Hornets have two seats. Else, filming all of this will require CGI which Tom Cruise will never want to do. This movie is amazing partly because a they used CGI very sparingly, and actor's reactions to the G-Force of the F18 was real, because they're all in the WSO seat. 2. The F35 is a single seat aircraft, and due to the reasons in point number 1 makes this unfeasible. 3. There isn't going to be much of a fight with the F35. They wouldn't have to make that low flying canyon run, and the pilot training montage wouldn't be intensive or entertaining. Using F35's to avoid radars would be absolutely boring and drama free. In hindsight, this movie is a classic 80s movie repackaged for 2022. And it worked. Plot armor is expected, but this is the kind of show that you want to watch with your brains turned off and have fun. Its like well made classic American cheese burger with bespoke buns and 100% grass fed beef. You don't eat a cheese burger for health reasons, you eat it because you want to.

My question is let's say the main characters did do a successful carrier landing. What were the Navy done with that f-14? A fully fine example f14 would be so cool.
Since it isn’t the US Navy’s F14 likely deny it ever landed on the carrier deck. Also Grumman has stopped making parts for it, the personnel who know how to fix it likely retired by now, and it being the A model wouldn’t be flyable by today’s pilots because only Maverick has experience in safely flying one.

That last scene was historically accurate. Cause the engines of Tomcat are so spaced out, losing one will make it into an unrecoverable spin.
