Hello Mark! I got a denon 3312. everything seems to work fine, but when I use HDMI, the sound is only coming from center and front channels, there is some weird noise in the rear channels... The problem only occurs when using HDMI, also, the problem goes away when using Multi channel stereo mode... Radio, usb etc work fine... What would be Your expert opinion on such a case? Would it be possible to repair without replacing the HDMI board?
Thank You for getting back to me: I am about to do a complete diagnostic on it as I am not sure of everything that is wrong with it, but I do know that off the bat the protection circuit kicks on if the volume goes up past 1/4 volume. I am also not sure about video output but here is the good news: Mu uncle heard about my efforts and threw 2 more units at me with similar problems. Talk about not putting the pressure on...
@vnb10kke OK, so is this an AVR2307ci like in the video or an AVR785 that you wrote about before? The 785 doesn't even have an Optical board as such, not that I see on a quick look anyway.
In my Denon AVR-785 without optical board can we play audio. Because Input volume board there is BD3811k1 sound processor, so no need optical board. Am i correct?
Hello i have problem with my avr 3300, there is no sound on any channell and source after turn on. What do you think about it ? I was read about failure DSP card
@denon210 Glad that worked out for you. Yours is a totally different receiver though... a blown fuse would not usually cause a protection problem. Maybe it would be dead or no sound, but not a protection shutdown.
Hey, I've got a (relatively similar) AVR1906 with the same issue; I've removed the three transistors (Darlington Pair + bias) from the SL channel which were blown, as well as the emitter resistors - haven't replaced these yet - but on power-up it still goes straight to standby (as yours did). I'm reading 41V from the chassis to the emitter of EVERY transistor... all of the voltage regulators (7805, 7815 & 7915) all test okay; any idea what could be causing this?
Hi I have waited one month to receive 7915 from e-bay. But this transistor metal top type instead of KIA 7915.(plastic top). I made some conversion i placed the transistor. Now I switch on the receiver, immediatel a smoke come from Optical board. IC812-74HCT244 BURNT. After that i remove the Optical board, Now the standby mode released. The set is On but there is no sound. Is there any sound connection through the Optical board.Or without can we hear the sound.
Hi mark good vid, Quick question the optical in my amp has stopped working in both ports. Any idea what would cause this, and is it hard to fix, thanks.
Hi, great video. I have searched all night on google for some sort of answer on why my AVR-2808 is “buzzing” from the receiver (not the speakers..) Do you think the power supply is broken? Sorry for the bad English.. :-)
Once again thanks I will try here as you suggested hope it will work . problem is with original OEM spare components which are rarely available here..KEEP POSTING ..................................more useful video..............Regards
both + and - voltages are present. 7.2 positive voltage. how to check processor BD3911K1 good or bad. In CNT board there is muting circuit,is this any problem related to no sound.
Thanks for this amazing video! 10 years and is still really good! Im having this AVR and was working fine until a few weeks, when the right channel beging to give much less volume than the left one. It happen with Front and Rear Right channel. Do you have any idea of wich could be the problem?
IHi Mark great video! I have the S510BT, I bought it two years ago, since it's first days after a thunderstorm the HDMI cbl/sat input (where the cable box was connected) stopped working, at the time I assumed it was related to a voltage issue. Yesterday the same thing happened now with the media player input, again the cable box was connected there. Now I believe the problem is the cable box or the HDMI cable (I've now changed it). The remaining 3 HDMI inputs work great however this now leaves me with a receiver with two non-working inputs, now I have to manually change the HDMI cable for my other devices. What do you recommend me to do? Thanks!
Nope those inputs are blown. HDMI boards are like that. Not really repairable either, except under warranty; they would just replace the board. If you can get it in under warranty DON'T mention lightning or cable box etc - just those inputs died for no reason.
Same Denon AVR 589, after resolving that -15V issue, another problem. The receiver works perfect in stereo mode. When in (any) surround mode, works well for a while (minutes or less), then you get random crackling and popping noises from all the channels, irrespective of the input, until the sound disappears. When back in stereo, works fine again. This might be an issue with the DSP board; since replacing it is out of question (not worth it), is there a known issue (fixable) with it? Thanks.
Hey Mark. Great Video. A quick question. Can a 110V Denon AVR be converted to a 220 Volt without using an external transformer. I mean just by changing some transformer wirings inside the AVR. Read it somewhere for other brands, am not sure it can be done in Denon. Thanks
Denon does not use multi-tap transformers for the domestic American market. They would have dedicated 220V models for some countries, and probably "general export" models with multi-tap transformers. So no, you would need a step-up (a pretty beefy one) or a different transformer. Either way, fairly expensive.
Hey Mark! Thanks for the video. I'm having a problem with my Denon AVR 2309CI that maybe you could provide some insight on... Sometimes the front right channel and/or center channel will stop working. If I apply pressure underneath the speaker channel (so they support some of the rear weight of the unit) or push on the speaker terminals, the channel(s) will start to work again until I let go or pressure is no longer applied. I'm thinking it's maybe a bad solder joint? I have the AVR taken apart right now, but haven't seen anything that looks bad yet. Have you ever run into this before? Let me know what you think. Thanks again!
Great video. Has Denon varied the design of their AVRs much over the the years. The final amplifier stage looks very similar to my old Denon AVR 1803. That has runs well for the last 12 years though for some reason I got some loud popping and a high pitched parasitic oscillation in the front right channel the other night. The oscillation happened when the amp was idling on one of the optical inputs connected to the Samsung TV which was off. I cleaned all the dust out of it. Also I checked my speakers for dry joints in the crossovers. Then I checked all the inputs on the back of the TV. I noticed some of the component video inputs from an Xbox were not connected properly. So I am waiting to see whether it was actually the amp or something else in the chain.
+Love Roses Try Stereo Direct mode if available and see if it does it there, also try the 5.1 Direct input. If it does not do it there, that eliminates the amp section as the cause.
Thanks Mark. I have been running it for a couple of hours playing CDs in the direct mode as suggested. Everything has been good so far. Interestingly I did some calculations on the Q of the crossover components. I discovered a big mismatch there and swapped out a cheap electrolyte capacitor which was very noisy on the tweeter. This made a huge difference to the sound. I am guessing you get at least -52 -0 - +52 volt swings at high power. So may the 100volt capacitors in the crossover were under-rated?
I have a 2307 also which of course had been working fine. Yhat is till today, while watching tv it kept clicking, everytime it clicked the sound went off or went on. I turned stand by power switch off then on again now there is no sound. No problem feeding video through it just no sound, I am thinking the clicking was a relay. Do you hsve any thoughts.
@golf2002corsa Hi, Did u find any burnt parts?!!!. If its Protection Mode, first remove your input volume board( i.e. cd dvd input connection board) now check, if protection mode released or not, if released the problem is KIA7915 in power supply.
I have a Denon AVR 391 that enters in protection mode, every time I turn it on. When I power it on, after a few seconds it turns off and the power led start blinking red. I tried to reset the processor, to no avail. Before de-soldering the output transistors (which seems OK, based on in-circuit resistance) and checking them, I was wondering if there are any known issues, where I can take a look first. The voltage regulators ICs also appear to be outputting the right voltage (+/-12 and 5 volts).
Can u please tell me if the part #'s for the boards behind the front panel source selection knob and power switch are 1u-3703-2 and 1u-3703-3 on the 2805 and 3805 receivers? Thanks!!!
Just glancing at the service manuals - the amp schematics look pretty much the same; the differences seem to pretty much involve the front panel area. How come?
Hi Mark, thanks for helping folks here with the same receiver. My 2307CI's FR channel is not working properly (very low volume and slight pop sound when trying to switch between different modes). Any particular resistor/transistor or capacitor do you recommend checking first once I open it up? Would it be on the board that has the red/black speaker connectors? Thanks in advance!
OK well. it's time to troubleshoot. Not easy with these types of units. A blown channel is much easier to spot. If you are a technical type, you might try measuring voltages on the affected amp channel. Maybe there's a "cold bias" problem. Each output transistor should have around 1.1 volts on the base. Comparing to other working channels is useful.
Hi Mark I detected in the pre amp board that the components:Q502FL(KSA992F),Q503(KSA992F),504FL(KSC1845F),R5011FL94) were burned. In the main board :Q103FL(2sc3964),D102FL(1n4148w),R106FL(4R7),Q101FL(2sd2930),R110FL(0R22),R111FL(0R22) were burned. which component is responsible for the mess up? Do you think that I missed another defected components ? I asking you cause I am concern that when I replace them they may will burn again. Thanks
You can try injecting a signal at CN902 along the top of the driver board (pre-amp board). I suggested rechecking your lower power supply voltages. Sometimes I will check resistance from the positive speaker connectors to ground while amp is ON. If the relays are energized, there will be a low resistance shown because of the low output impedance of the amp. This checks continuity from the speaker terminals back to the actual amp outputs.
Thanks. I checked the 3.3 DSP line, it's 2.75, constant. The most bizarre thing is that when I put back the HDMI/DSP card to test the voltages, all the symptoms disappeared. How can that be? Oxidized connectors? Is that even a possibility? Should I expect that issue to reappear? On a not (quite) related question: the radiator that keeps the voltage regulators (including the -15 that I replaced) is at ~45-50 degrees Celsius. Is it too high?
R135 and R136 check out okay; what exactly do the currently removed pair C182 and R184 do? I'm starting to think they may be the cause for this overvoltage... any thoughts on this?
Thanks for your reply. The low ohms resistors (all channels) look OK. I measured them in circuit (they have low resistance), they all show 4.7 ohms, none looks burned. I will have to de-solder the output transistors, to check them correctly, but none looks shorted (all show various resistances between EC, Kohms range, in circuit). I have a bad feeling that it’s not that, but I’ll check anyway. I'm just too lazy to do it now, I have to take everything out to reach the other side of the main board
So thanks for reminding me for the second power switch but I still have a boot issue like what you are describing here in your vid ie it powers on but before it fully initialize it cuts out and the Stand by switch/lamb goes to a blinking red This happens when there are speaker[s] attached but when there is nothing attached it boot fine. So from reading this post and watching our video am I to assume it’s the IC 101 and IC 102 on the main power board which r the + and - 15 volt regulators?
Hey once again. Sorry I haven't sent my unit in yet.. work has been really slow and I need to ration my funds for Xmas. Once I save my money back up ill send it your way. Thanks again, and happy holidays. Josh.
Hi, I have AVR 785 receiver , now the receiver is in protection mode. i did so many research in this receiver, but finally i remove the input volume board, after that the receiver become normal operation(protection mode released0. But the no sound.i could n't find any problem in input volume board. If i fix the board again set going to protection mode. my question is the problem is in power supply or the input volume board. thanks,
Great video. I had the protection mode problem on a denon 1906, so I replaced regulators 7805, 7815 and 7915. After reassembling ... nothing ... not even the blinking light. I notice that the blue housing (cp931) that receives the B&W wires from the power switch is quite loose, although not disconnected from the board. Is that the likely problem. Or was it just poor soldering? I'm an amateur .. and this was my first time soldering at the circuit board level. Thanks for any ideas.
Hi Mark, I have an AVR-591 that kept shutting down due to overcurrent on the center channel. I fixed that by replacing one of the transistors, but managed to blow the FR channel. I thought I was changing the center channel pot, but got the wrong one and took it too far, or the supposedly equivalent C channel transistor wasn't as equivalent as I thought. I've tried replacing a number of components on the channel, but haven't gotten it back up. I figured it'd be cheaper to replace the amp board then get a new system, but all I see for sale are the fully populated 7-channel boards. Will I run into problems putting one of those boards in the 591, or should I wait for a partially populated board?
JT Longino The board you have should still be fixable. I kinda doubt the 7-channel board will plug in directly. Wouldn't count on it anyway. The original repair, replacing only the one transistor, doesn't sound right. Usually at least the emitter resistors are also bad. replace both outputs, all the smaller transistors on that channel, the emitter resistors, and check the base current limiting resistors. They are 22 ohm in series with the base of each output. There are also diodes and zener diodes in that area, and one or more of them could be bad. Set the bias pot to a value about the same as on the other channels for starters.
i just wanna know. ive got a Denon AVR 1513. It shuts down and a transistor starts glowing. is the fix just to change out the transistor? its past warranty, its just as cheap to buy a new one as it is to send it for repair. but i'd like to fix it myself if its just as easy as re-soldering the
+David Fenton I couldn't possibly know for sure, but most likely what you are seeing burning is a resistor. If it's on the amp board - you probably have a blown channel. Bad transistors, other parts as well. Very unlikely you can fix it yourself.
@quigleydog Some of these had a problem with the headphone jack falsely triggering the speakers to shut off. Try plugging in some headphones a couple times and see if that clears the problem, at least temporarily. The fix is really to replace the headphone jack with the new improved part.
I have a Denon AVR-2805 that has an issue with the volume control, the right channels of the amp will go full blast randomly, but goes away as soon as I turn the volume up or down a notch, its not the encoder as it does this even with the remote. I have posted a video response to show you the fault. Any ideas on where I should start testing?
The first problem was protection mode, as per your video instruction i changed the KIA7915 , after that avr become normal operation. Now i connected to TV through DVB receiver , Display & tv sound everything present. But audio output of avr all channels missing. I did microprocessor initialize & headpone but upto now no sound. Now question is how to check audio output & preamp stage individually. Suppose if i dsconnect preamp from amp section, hwo to check independently???!!!.
During 1:43 can you can tell what those round copper things are on the board? their round, and there is about 7 of those. I always wondering what those individual component parts are called. thank you
Hi Mark. Perfect video. I have question. I have avr-1911, with blonw chanell, i change all parts which not work, without result. This denon have two pins ''TRG 15V'', what is this? I don't have +15/-15v on this receiver. On this two pins ''TRG 15V'' i have 12.10v. Please some idea?
This model appears to use plus and minus 8 volt lines as shown on the Reg board. If the amp channel has actually had all the defective parts replace and it still goes into protection I would look closely at the following components on the amp board which often fail when the amp goes out: Q417 (KTA1268), R493 (33 ohm), C419 (100uf @100V) and sometimes R551 (100 ohms) If one or more of these parts are bad it will cause a large DC offset on ALL channels which triggers the shutdown.
Any experience on Harman Kardon AVR 354? Powers up, the speaker relays are turning on. Sound on all speakers, but it starts with a buzzing noise which decreases in intensity after a few seconds while you start hearing the music. The sound level is constant but faint; it remains the same when you change the volume or press mute (the LCD display works). After ~30 seconds there is an abrupt buildup of noise and the unit enters in protect mode. More on next post.
Thank you for the great video. I wonder If I can ask you a question about a Denon Avr-2309? My issue is that it enters protection mode once in while, but lately more often, it seems.Often I get a soft popping sound some time before the protection triggers. When the protection triggers I get a loud bang from seemingly all the 7.1 speakers. I can press the blinking red power button and the unit at once works normally again without any issue for days.I don't play loudly so it's not overloading. I have opened the unit and cleaned it for dust with compressed air, also the headphone jack. Didn't improve. Thought maybe it could be a bad solder joint somewhere, maybe in the power section? Would be grateful for any pointers you could give. Been a while since I did any electronic work, but I'm up for most tasks.
The pop and especially the bang over all channels points to a power supply issue. Often a fixed voltage regulator will be failing and it is common for them to get worse and worse. Like a 7812, 7912, etc voltage regulator IC.
Thanks a lot for the tip, I appreciate it very much. Best would be to just replace them all while having the unit open as they are so cheap. Thanks again.
Geir Kristiansen The part number for the replacement single .22 ohm resistors is 2442043982. You will probably need to order them from a Denon distributor. I can still buy them direct, but we are no longer a warranty repair station for them. Alternatively, there's always eBay and Digi-Key, Mouser, and other parts distributors.
I have a Denon AVR-391 that enters in protection mode, every time I turn it on. When I power it on, after a few seconds it turns off and the power led start blinking red. I tried to reset the processor which worked for awhile but every time I turned it off I had to reset processor to turn back on. I also notice a strange static(like something frying) noise coming from the FL which would gone away in a few seconds then the receiver worked fine. Every control worked. Where should I start?
Those are coils, each channel has one, part of an output filtering circuit called (I think) a Zobel shunt. The purpose is to help keep the amp from oscillating. Practically every push-pull direct coupled amp uses them.
hi i'm having a similar problem with AVR 1909. i tried to change the bias potentiometer in one of the channels and the transistors blew. now i have a short in two power transistors(B 1560,D 2390) of that channel. Is it ok if i just change the two transistors or is there a possibility something else might be blown?
Almost certainly you have bad 0.47 ohm emitter resistors. There are 4 of them. Maybe one or two bad 4.7 ohm base current limiting resistor. Also there are 2 diodes and 2 zener diodes which essentially parallel the bias transistor. Often one or more of these is bad as well.
Hey Mark I have a Denon AVR-1804 av surround receiver with no sound at all from any of the outputs. The device powers up fine but looking for some quick guidance or suggestions if you could.
Where are you getting the datasheets for the Receiver? I tried to search the 3313 so I could diagnose with that information but from what I'm seeing online it's voltage regulators or transistors that are the usual suspects that go out. So I probably just need to get my multimeter out and prove accordingly. I'd still be interested in where you're finding the datasheets though as I think that will help boost my understanding. Thanks for the informative video.
To say that I am handy with electronics and tools, would be an understatement, but I am not so good as to dare to call myself an electrician. I would call myself an enthusiast; I just happen to have more tools than the average person. I have been able to get my hands on a copy of a repair or service manual for my Denon avr-3808ci . It has some issues, but I would like to try to repair it myself. Now I could just follow the manual, but I think there are steps I can skip. Can you advise?
Can I ask a related question? I realize the standby power LED is a 2 color (red/green). If I wanted to replace it with a single color blue led, that was blue when "on", what would be my first step? I did replace an incandescent mini bulb in a record player with an LED. I measured the voltage feeding the bulb and calculated the proper resistor to install with it. Seems that this would be easier.
Update 2: thanks for getting back to me. I have the manual. I was able to find the -15V regulator, was difficult because the schematics didn’t seem to match the actual pcb. There’s only one -15V regulator (KIA7915), the same I replaced on the Denon. I am not saying this is (the only) problem, but I will try to replace it and see what happens. Not sure when, as it’s a hell of a disassemble work to be done, and I'm not in the mood right now, and don't have time either.
Update: I noticed that the volume and mute functions are controlled by IC20 (NJW1197), located on the input board. I measured some voltages on that board, and connector CN22 has the -15V line at -2.1V. Could this be the problem? I am still “searching” for the IC regulator that feeds that -15V.
HI Mark, Need your help, I have a Denon Avr X1000 which shuts off after 10 mins and flashes red light. Anyidea what component to be replaced...is it the voltage regulators... I did try reset, it didnt fix the issue.
The negative regulator could be loading the supply more than we think, the input filter capacitor to that chip could be bad or there could be a discrepancy involving your ground reference versus the ground there at those regulators. Ideally the input voltages would be closer but in practice often not quite.
Hi Mark, I have a Denon AVR X1000 that suddenly turned everything green on my hdmi out display. Ran the troubleshooting gamut with Denon tech support, they determined I should have it serviced under warranty. Unfortunately, I no longer have the receipt! Is there a DIY solution to something like this?
Carl B Yeah - Denon just dropped us as an authorized service center, but this can be caused by the "CEC" setting on the tv or display (it might also be called Anynet.) It allows the dvd or bd to turn the tv on or off when the disc player is turned on or off. Turn this feature OFF in the TV menus - might clear up the problem.
Hi Mark, I got a Denon AVR 1907 who front display won't lid, but still all other things work fine, all the functions work great, about the display lcd that won't work what could I do?
sasuke9657 This model is different than most. It uses a "chip-on-glass" VFD display tube. All that is required for operation is a -30v power source, and data and clock signals from the microprocesser. No separate display driver is required - it's built into the display tube. They've had some problems with these - I've replace a few on other models. Some technical skill is required to replace.
@mdzacharias Would the emitter & the collecttor be the 2 outside legs of the transistor ? If yes, could you show me what your talking about. You see, I have a Denon AVR3803 (it was given to me and it doesn't work) I checked the fuses which are o.k. What would be the next check on list for finding out the problem ? I have DVM but nothing fancy like a Oscilloscope.
My denon avr 2311 menu keep changing while running , it keep switches from dts to stereo to Dolby and so on , pls give me some suggestions what would be problem ? And also all buttons in front panel not working
Thank you, The reason why i am asking is because, one day i was adding hot sauce to my food, and as i squeezed the bottle too hard, the sauce went into the air, and a few drips landed into the denon :( One of thoes coils caught about 2 drops, Denon still works as good as it always does.but i do hear some sort of Poping sound once every 30mins - 40 hours. Any advice on what i should do?
Another Denon AVR 589 that goes in protection. This time the -15V (at the CP511 ) is actually -22V, and I intend to replace the KIA7915 (IC516) with an equivalent. And here’s my question: can I use a (much) cheaper LM7915 instead? From datasheet looks similar. Secondly, I can’t find (cheap) the TO-220FP package, but only the one not insulated (so the IC metal case would be at the heat sink). Should I use mica insulator? Another thing is that the 24V is 22.7, but not sure if that's an issue.
I'm a repair technician from the Netherlands I have very much experience with marantz denon onkyo sony kenwood nad yamaha and many other brands. There are too many to mention. Problem here is that if you buy something defective on the Internet. That there have been many other people who thought they could fix it. Without any knowledge. Or know what they are doing. You fixes over what was going on before. So you have a lot of work. DSP problems are hard to fix. That part is very hard to get.
Then how to check amp section, because amp heatsink is in normal temperature. so amp is working. Can i check through SIGHNAL INJECTOR in pre map section. how to find out faulty location.
Hi Mark, Hope you are doing OK. Question about a Denon AVR 788 receiver. Symptom: bought a defective one, previous owner complained about intermittent sound. When I powered it the first time, there was no sound. I blew compressed air in the phono socket and worked for a while (although apparently this turned out to be just a coincidence). After a while, intermittent sound, and no sound shortly afterwards. This happened in all sound modes, EXCEPT stereo and direct mode, pointing to a DSP issue (cold joint somewhere). However, after I checked visually (using a toy microscope) I didn’t notice any issues at the DSP chip pin connection. I didn't try to re-solder, too tricky (albeit doable if need be). I also checked the electrolytic capacitors, ESR seemed OK. After reseating the HDMI board, this issue (intermittent or no sound hasn’t re-appeared - not yet (I’ve been trying it for 2 days now). Here comes my specific question: have you had any instances where just by reseating the board the issue was gone? Also, what is the best way to test it further to figure out if the issue is still there? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!
There was a service bulletin that might have to do with this. I no longer have access to bulletins but this is an old one. I can email it to you. Did I ever get your email address?
Hi Mark, I have a 3808 with HDMI board no longer operating, Denon has no spare; unit will power on but no sound. I would like your opinion on rebuilding this unit as an analogue stereo. I have no further use for surround sound anyway just running 2 channels. Cost of repairs in Australia for me are out of the question as my circumstances have changed.
+David Hamburger Well, there's rarely any quick magic fix for things like this. I generally check first all the DC power supplies I can find with a multimeter. If one appears low, I look closer with an oscilloscope. Sometimes a noisy DC line will cause issues like this, I have seen it on similar models.
Hello, I have a demon 2310 and front right speaker have a lower volume compared the other channels and the pre out sub is not working already tried a reset but does not help !!! Any suggestion ?
The "10" series can be very difficult to troubleshoot. I have seen premature deterioration of the speaker relays on these. When this happens, turning up the volume seems to help temporarily then the problem recurs. This model is extremely difficult to service because of all the interconnected circuit boards. Poorly implemented computer-aided design.
Hi Mark, I have an AVR-2310CL which no longer turns on its audio outputs from any source. The HDMI routing and video switching all works fine. I was able to recover once by power-cycling everything connected to it. After that it worked for another week or so. No I can't get it to produce any audio even out of circuit with only a single source. I replaced it with a 4K-capable Yamaha receiver. Do you think the AVR-2310cl would be worth repairing at this point? Thanks, Scott
Scott Pritchett I don't have any quick fixes. I would just have to start with various power supply voltages, looking for anything missing or low.Possibly a bad HDMI board - that is where a lot of the audio magic is done.
Scott Pritchett When you turn the receiver on - or immediately after the audio cuts out - check to see if the headphone icon is lit on the display. They had a problem with the headphone jack / switch assembly on some of these.
I have denon AVR-785, The first problem was protected mode, that is solved. Now there is no sound at any channel. I could n't find out the location. How to confirm amplifier section working properely or not. How to confirm whethere it is problem in pre Amp or Amp section. How to check these sections step by setp.
Wow, like everyone else has said, great video. So kind of you to take your time to show people what is involved. My issue is with a Denon 2312CI. In 2014, HDMI board went bad and I sent it in for service. They sent back a refurbished unit, but life got in the way of hooking it back up. It remained sealed in plastic and cardboard until 3 days ago. It powers up fine, but no sound (speakers or headphones) and no video out. I suspect, based on what I have read here and from watching your video that it is the amp circuitry. I have testes the 7 fuses I could find without removing any boards/circuits and they are all fine. Before I go and purchase a new unit, is there anything else I can test with my multi-meter? Also, any brand/model in current line ups that you would recommend for durability. I have read good things about these Outlaw amps and pre's. Thanks again. Cheers~
Probably not any kind of amp problem. If it were, the unit would be going into protect. I'd be listening for the speaker relay(s) to come on after several seconds. It's unlikely but could be there's no power to the relays. I would also check the + and - 7 volt suplies and the + and - 15 volt lines (or 12v, whatever). Could be the HDMI board is bad and the turkeys didn't check it right before they called it "refurbished". I have also replaced a few defective input select / electronic volume control IC's on these and similar models. In fact my own AVR-1712 had a bad one. It's a 100 pin surface-mount IC (IC471) on the input board. Rather difficult to replace. Major diasassembly, and there are some components packed around the IC that make it very difficult to replace without damaging the delicate foil pads. The more I think of it, the more I lean towards this. I think you may be out of luck on this one...
A multimeter is often used to see if a transistor is shorted or a resistor open-circuit, but I also use a homemade device called a component tester or "octopus" or "curve tracer" which gives a graphic display on an oscilloscope screen. You can see it in action in my original Pioneer VSX-918VK repair brief.
Sometimes bad or broken connections at the optical input jacks. The optical and coax paths are almost identical and tied together so if the coax works and the optical does not, that narrows things down a lot.
@golf2002corsa on the 1601 there are a couple of 1 ohm resistors on the main board which often go bad. R141 and R142. They should be replaced with .22 ohm 1 watt flameproof types.
Whenever a Denon has a weird problem like this the first thing to do is re-initialize the microprocessor according to the procedure given in the owners manual.. Have you tried this?
Hi, Hoping you can help. I have a Denon 2310CI that appears to have a dead HDMI board. I get no video output using HDMI connections but I do get video if using an s-video cable from the receiver to the monitor. It also appears that the HDMI inputs are dead as even with the s-video out to the monitor, none of the devices connected to the HDMI inputs result in video output. The HDMI board itself appears to be no longer available. I assume this can be repaired at the component level? Can you provide any tips on where to start or a repair shop that can service this?
I would say that if the front display shows indicators of signal being received while HDMI sources are being played, showing DTS, Digital, DTS, HDMI etc indicators, then the HDMI transmitter chip is bad and this is quite common, especially it seems with Analog Devices IC's. In this case the transmitter is IC701. It is a surface-mount IC and fairly specialized tools and skill are required to replace.
Doesn't appear that any of these indicators are lit. I am able to get output using both S-Video and Component Video. I should have mentioned that the unit may have taken a power surge following a power outage. I suspect the HDMI board is the culprit. Any idea where I may be able to have my board refurbished or where I might be able to obtain (8u-310038) one. I've looked around on-line but no dice.
Hi Mark! I have a quick question i have a Denon avr-x2000 and after start up goes to protection mode i check the power on the power transistor and im getting +54v on -54 on the next which should be correct but on the emitter voltage im not getting my 24v on any of my power transistor. Have you experience this symptoms before? I got the unit like this so i have no ideo what happened before to make it activate the red light protection mode. Thanks in advance!
The emitters should measure near zero volts DC with respect to ground. The base of each output transistor should read around 1.2 volts DC. It is possible to take a quick voltage reading and turn the unit back off before it goes into protect. I would look for DC voltage at the emitter of any of the output transistors. If there is a DC voltage showing on one channel, obviously that channel is defective. If there is DC on all channels, some sort of power supply issue is indicated. If a channel is blown, there will be a number of parts bad. Also if an amp channel is blown, on this model there is another transistor, resistor and capacitor which often go bad. It's easy to miss while repairing the amp channel since it is over on one side of the board, away from the other damage. It's Q417, R493(33 ohms) and C419, maybe also R551(100 ohms).
Hi, I have a Denon receiver that seems to work perfectly, except no sound comes out . I am a mid level audiophile, and an absolutely novice at tech repair. As such , much of your video was Greek to me. How did you know to change all those resistors, or where to start with this thing? I think it's such ashame to trash can this otherwise wonderful stereo receiver.
I had been a repair tech with two years of technical school and 30+ years experience in the field after that, by the time I did this repair. No offense, but you are probably way over your head trying to fix a surround receiver for anything much more than a fuse. Your best bet is to get the receiver to a qualified technician - or replace it.
hi i have a denon avr-1906 with a problem it sounds good in stereo and direct but when you change it to 5.1 u get a loud thump from the center channel and it works as it should and sounds as it should untill you make a switch ie. changing the function or going back to stereo or direct and its also made the thump in 5.1 when you turn the volume down from -70 to nothing any help will be appreciated
No leakage - what do you mean? Do they put out the proper voltage? If the regulators are OK, it's necessary to check other protection triggers. First you would need to determine if one or more amplifier channels has a DC offset.
It's such a blessing to have a skill set like yours. You are truly a blessed soul!
Thanks. It didn't come out of thin air. Tech school for two years and 35 years "school of hard knocks."
***** Probably would require the HDMI board but I would try a reset per the owners manual first. If it's a CI model they have a three year warranty.
thanks allot for all your help the transistor come today so will be fitting it later.
Thanks for immediate reply, I will try that +15 v & -15v regulators & capacitors.
I have this reciever and I love it. Still works perfect and the audio quality is good. I also can connect my fire tv Stick
The 785 doesn't even have an Optical board as such, not that I see on a quick look anyway.
good video. Just wondering when it goes into protection mode as it did here, do all the low voltage supply rails still remain powered up?
This model has a "hard" power switch right next to the Standby/ON button at the lower left side of the front panel. It's not turned OFF there, is it?
I really do not except Denon's back then were kinda famous for fixing stuff like this with a factory reset as found in the owners manual.
Thanks.
I’ve also notice you work on many other brands other than Denon
Are there certain brands you recommend from there quality of build and componentry?
L00pback0 I agree solder connections are a good place to start. Too bad the dis assembly is so daunting.
I just need to know if the front panel source knob and power switch boards are the same between the 2805, 3805 and 3806
I have a Denon AVR 391 that enters in protection mode, every time I turn it on.
How come?
Yup. Same email. Great that worked out for you!
Victor Lay I would try a reset first. Fixes more Denon's than you would think.
Mark Zacharias Thanks! Reset tried and did not do the trick of fixing the issue.
OK well. it's time to troubleshoot. Not easy with these types of units. A blown channel is much easier to spot. If you are a technical type, you might try measuring voltages on the affected amp channel. Maybe there's a "cold bias" problem. Each output transistor should have around 1.1 volts on the base. Comparing to other working channels is useful.
Hi Mark
I detected in the pre amp board that the components:Q502FL(KSA992F),Q503(KSA992F),504FL(KSC1845F),R5011FL94) were burned.
Thanks
hi there again what do i need to do in order to use this 2SC2878 on the pre amp board?
best regards
kyle
Is it too high?
sorry for hassling you
but i cant seem to source
the Q501C ktc2874b
do you know if my old
knackered denon avr-3300 would have one in
@zoggy87 Is that a Denon model? I don't find it listed.
I'm just too lazy to do it now, I have to take everything out to reach the other side of the main board
hi mark i have same amp but its working only on stereio and direct mode if i change to dts mode sound not coming plz help me out
So thanks for reminding me for the second power switch but I still have a boot issue like what you are describing here in your vid ie it powers on but before it fully initialize it cuts out and the Stand by switch/lamb goes to a blinking red
This happens when there are speaker[s] attached but when there is nothing attached it boot fine.
I don't know - just make sure you didn't miss plugging in any connectors. Pretty easy to miss one.
Hi Mark,
I have an AVR-591 that kept shutting down due to overcurrent on the center channel.
Now question is how to check
audio output & preamp stage individually.
If the amp channel has actually had all the defective parts replace and it still goes into protection I would look closely at the following components on the amp board which often fail when the amp goes out:
Q417 (KTA1268), R493 (33 ohm), C419 (100uf @100V) and sometimes R551 (100 ohms)
If one or more of these parts are bad it will cause a large DC offset on ALL channels which triggers the shutdown.
Thanks again.

do u fix house stereo
Hello! Where do you get all that emitter resistors? Have a lot of Denon repairs waiting and need of these 0,22ohm resistors. Thank's in advance!
Thank's you for brief answering! :-)
Is it ok if i just change the two transistors or is there a possibility something else might be blown?
btw my 15v -15v voltage regulators r fine.
Does the Spkr A or B indicator LED's come on? Do you hear the speaker relay click? There were some problems with the headphone sensing on these.
Thanks for the informative video.
www.hifiengine.com/
You have to register but it's free. I used to be an authorized servicer but they downsized their service network.
Thanks for the help, I'll check it out!
Hi Mark
I have DENON 1507 that shut down after a few seconds.
Do you have any idea what could be cause of this malfunction?
Thanks
HI Mark,
Need your help, I have a Denon Avr X1000 which shuts off after 10 mins and flashes red light. Anyidea what component to be replaced...is it the voltage regulators...
I did try reset, it didnt fix the issue.
Maybe a regulator or maybe a bad solder or metallic debris in that area. Saw a similar model with QC problems like this just a couple days ago.
I connect a amplifier from preout, but i didn't get any sound.
The negative regulator could be loading the supply more than we think, the input filter capacitor to that chip could be bad or there could be a discrepancy involving your ground reference versus the ground there at those regulators. Ideally the input voltages would be closer but in practice often not quite.
Hi Mark,
I have a Denon AVR X1000 that suddenly turned everything green on my hdmi out display.
Thank you,
The reason why i am asking is because, one day i was adding hot sauce to my food, and as i squeezed the bottle too hard, the sauce went into the air, and a few drips landed into the denon :(
One of thoes coils caught about 2 drops, Denon still works as good as it always does.but i do hear some sort of Poping sound once every 30mins - 40 hours.
Any advice on what i should do?
Is yours a 2307? The 2307 has 3 inputs. Does the co-ax input work?
Another Denon AVR 589 that goes in protection. This time the -15V (at the CP511 ) is actually -22V, and I intend to replace the KIA7915 (IC516) with an equivalent. And here’s my question: can I use a (much) cheaper LM7915 instead? From datasheet looks similar. Secondly, I can’t find (cheap) the TO-220FP package, but only the one not insulated (so the IC metal case would be at the heat sink). Should I use mica insulator?
Another thing is that the 24V is 22.7, but not sure if that's an issue.
i love the song takes me way back when......
Can u please tell me how similar the internals of a 2803 and 2805 are? Thanks!
If it were the voltage regulators, it would go protect with no speakers. You may have a bad speaker or wire. Does it do it with the volume DOWN?
ill sort ya a little donation out soon
you,ve saved me a fortune
lol
best regards
I'm a repair technician from the Netherlands I have very much experience with marantz denon onkyo sony kenwood nad yamaha and many other brands. There are too many to mention. Problem here is that if you buy something defective on the Internet. That there have been many other people who thought they could fix it. Without any knowledge. Or know what they are doing. You fixes over what was going on before. So you have a lot of work. DSP problems are hard to fix. That part is very hard to get.
Thanks for your quick reply (how do you do that?!).
Then how to check amp section, because amp heatsink is in normal temperature. so amp is working. Can i check through SIGHNAL INJECTOR in pre map section. how to find out faulty location.
Hi Mark,
Hope you are doing OK. Question about a Denon AVR 788
receiver. Symptom: bought a defective one, previous owner complained about
intermittent sound. When I powered it the first time, there was no sound. I blew
compressed air in the phono socket and worked for a while (although apparently this
turned out to be just a coincidence). After a while, intermittent sound, and no
sound shortly afterwards. This happened in all sound modes, EXCEPT stereo and
direct mode, pointing to a DSP issue (cold joint somewhere). However, after I
checked visually (using a toy microscope) I didn’t notice any issues at the DSP
chip pin connection. I didn't try to re-solder, too tricky (albeit doable if
need be). I also checked the electrolytic capacitors, ESR seemed OK. After reseating
the HDMI board, this issue (intermittent or no sound hasn’t re-appeared - not yet
(I’ve been trying it for 2 days now). Here comes my specific question: have you
had any instances where just by reseating the board the issue was gone? Also, what
is the best way to test it further to figure out if the issue is still there?
Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!
There was a service bulletin that might have to do with this. I no longer have access to bulletins but this is an old one. I can email it to you. Did I ever get your email address?
170watt (at) gmail.comThank you!
My denon 1603 prologic and 5 channel not working. But stereo and external working. Can you please help where is the problem
Hi Mark,
I have an AVR-2310CL which no longer turns on its audio outputs from any source.
Thanks,
Scott
Mark Zacharias do you fix on them
Sometimes bad or broken connections at the optical input jacks.
Your best bet is to get the receiver to a qualified technician - or replace it.
hi i have a denon avr-1906 with a problem
it sounds good in stereo and direct but when you change it to 5.1 u get a loud thump from the center channel and it works as it should and sounds as it should untill you make a switch ie.
changing the function or going back to stereo or direct and its also made the thump in 5.1 when you turn the volume down from -70 to nothing
any help will be appreciated
No leakage - what do you mean? Do they put out the proper voltage? If the regulators are OK, it's necessary to check other protection triggers. First you would need to determine if one or more amplifier channels has a DC offset.
I have a denon avr 786
it keep shutting down right after I turn it on
do u know what is the common thing that causes that to happen?
