A block diagram helped to narrow down a problem with an ADC graphic equalizer a friend asked me to fix. The symptom was a dead channel when the EQ is engaged. Both channels work when the EQ is turned off. The block diagram helped me to isolate a dead 4558 opamp in the EQ side. Didn't have any spare 4558s on hand at the time, so I ended up replacing the left and right channel 4558 opamps with a pair 4560 opamps, which are pin compatible and close enough in specs to work without issue. Got it working again. Also did a recapping, considering the EQ is 1983 vintage so no doubt a few caps in it may be out of spec from age and use. I also repaired a Nakamichi Receiver 1 recently, but this one I couldn't rely on a block diagram or a flowchart to help. The right channel would only emit a loud humming noise. Removing the jumper between the preamp output and amp input didn't resolve the noise, so it wasn't in the preamp side. The problem was a dead 4558 opamp, which I replaced with a spare. Fixed that problem. But, then there was another problem with the left channel making a very loud popping noise every time the tone defeat button was pressed or when the speaker selection switch was used. The problem was traced down to a bad muting transistor, a 2SC2878 at Q204L.
The 465 and 665 are from the same model year. The newer mid-fi models are cheaper though. For a while there i was really impressed with price/performance ratios of Yamaha and Denon both. Now they are cutting back on features at most price points.
What board would cause PCM output on any HDMI source with anything but Straight selected? Also getting random poweroffs with L0xxx codes in diagnostics menu.
Ran across this youtube video, while searching for a 'lead's on a Yamaha HTR5860 that is wearing me out. Powers on, Powers back off. Appears to be a quite common problem in Yamaha Amps. Have found a few tips, that have not helped, nor even gave me any leads to follow. Outputs checked good (diode check). Regulators check good (voltage) while its on. C405 is good (not same value as the culprit in other models)...I swapped it anyway. I assume you are/were Yamaha Authorized ?
Would that were only true... if I were all that I would have fixed it sooner and cheaper. You just don't expect this type of problem. Must have been a minor electrical surge of some sort, or maybe a bad lot of IC's although I do Yamaha warranty work and haven't seen any others. Hmmm. Thanks for watching!
My way of replacing an IC like the one here @6:15 is this, first cut the pins with a razor blade pushing down, remove the IC, remove the cut pins with a 35 watt soldering iron at low temp, clean the board by putting on some solder and remove it with solder wick, I bend the pins by pushing all of the pins on one side at a time so the IC will not sit tight on the board, tack two opposite side pins to hold the IC in place and check the line up, then short out all the pins with solder, alternate sides to avoid overheating the IC, then use the solder wick to remove the excess solder, it comes out as good as the original factory soldering, BTW I have one of these receivers that doesn't pass HDMI
I normally don't suspect the main transformer unless it went out after playing very loud for a couple hours and got very hot. More likely a blown amp channel and a "fast protect". But the only way I would know for sure is to check it myself. In the U.S. a Yamaha has a 2 year factory warranty if you bought it new. An authorized service center should be able to fix it.
Hi Mark. Great Video. Helped me figure out my problem with the power supply. When trying to turn on my V665, instantly clicks and never turns on. Found out it's the capacitor on the power supply board. Found this out because I froze it and the unit turned on. Since you have worked on this model, do you know what part # the capacitor is or what the replacement would be? I cannot read the one I have. Thanks
+Chris M I need a better idea what capacitor you are talking about. If it's that small value one in the AC circuit feeding the standby power supply - those are special and should probably be ordered from Yamaha, although any appropriate rated one would work, they are a special type designed not to cause a safety problem if it should fail. If it is that one, they use a different one for each market so I need to know what your local voltage is - 120v, 240v, 100v etc.
You might be out of luck. I would try using a variable external supply to sort of parallel the existing supply voltage bringing it up to about the normal voltage, and see if the IC gets hot or if some normal operation is restored. .24 amps doesn't really seem like all that much to me.
Of course. I did it earlier. Supply current is 0.5A for Vcc=5V . It's too much. IC gets hot. I unsolder IC from board and connect supply to IC, no change. Now i'm sure that the cause of problem is micro. Thanks for your suggestion.
Hi Mark. I have had a RX-V1071 receiver for a couple years. We had severe storms the past couple of days. All of a sudden the receiver no longer powers on? I've been looking online to seek an answer how to fix this. I've just replaced the 2 capacitors on the power circuit board, and still nothing. I was thinking of just ordering a new power circuit board from Yamaha, but what if it's not the board. Do you have any ideas of what to look for? Shall I get the multimeter out and do some tests? Juzzy Roy Doesn't look good. Lots of small voltage regulator stuff and sensitive IC's on the digital (1) board. That board is probably over $300.00 U.S.

Juzzy Roy Check the switching transistor Q2001 and the other parts that you can - diodes, resistors, etc on that power board, then probably replace IC201. (L6566BTR) Yamaha's part number is X9806A00. Still a chance you have deeper issues though.

Hi Mark ..I could sure use some feedback! ive got an RX-V667 that has no output from the hdmi out port...the hdmi in ports all feed the audio part of signal just fine ,all digital modes dtshdma and dolby truehd ect all play great.. ive run it in diagnostic mode and it fails 2 tests on the hdmi section..havent got it hooked up at this time ,cant recall which failed but one test was hdmi loopback [ng]....Ive been tempted to grab a non working rx-v667 cheap off ebay and try to salvage the hdmi board from it to get mine working...i miss the onscreen display and the upconverter for video does not work either..I can pull up an onscreen display by hooking monitor to the component video monitor out but screen is laggy and upscaling is greyed out.. Mark ,have you run into the hdmi boards being bad on this model? would you suggest a board swap? would you happen to know which parts tend to fail or need replacing on the board in a case like this? I can rerun the diagnostic mode and see which 2 tests fail if that info would help..ill be watching for any posts ,thankyou for any help brother!
The HDMI transmitter chip fails pretty often on these. SiL9134CTU. If you are good with surface mounted IC's its a pretty good bet. Lots of counterfeit parts out there. I've had good luck with a seller called UTsource on eBay. Otherwise it would have to come from Yamaha. A used unit for parts might be good - unless it's board is also bad...
***** Pretty clearly it's either a broken HDMI jack or IC7 has a blown port. Normally I would have just replaced the board under warranty but the 679 is probably out of warranty by now. You may be out of luck. You still have 4 other hdmi inputs plus one on the front. How many do you need anyway? Sheesh.
Sorry - missed the bit about no hdmi OUT as well. In that case the only option would be to replace the board. Much too expensive - about 240.00 retail just for the part. Then it has to be installed and "taught" who it is and firmware installed. Probably time to punt or find a parts car on eBay.
Hi Mark; have you worked on a Yamaha RX-V4600 before? How the heck you are supposed to remove the Amp Unit? I mean after removing the Duct, push rivets and screws, and all removable cables, you are stuck with a few thicker cables (red, black, blue) that are soldered between this and another board, without being able to move it around, let alone removing it completely. Arrggh…
Please disregard; I was able to remove a small board from the Amp unit, in spite of limited access. The output transistors Q232A & 232C (2SA1492 / 2SC3856) - shorted, Nobel resistor R322 (5P 0.22x2) - open, and other components that might be damaged as well are now accessible.
I'm trying to work on a Yamaha R-V1105 A/V Receiver that won't stay on. It shuts off as it turns on (I hear two "clicks" that are so close to gether that they almost sound like one click). What do you think is the cause of this, and do you know how I can get a service manual for this receiver?
I would check for shorted output transistors, especially at the rear channel amp board (along the top of the heat sink). Common problem. Also ring cracks at any of the bias transistors, and very occasionally a bad power relay will cause enough of a drop at power on to trigger the protection. If you have ruled out shorted outputs, it is possible to bypass the protection. This is for technicians only, since additional damage is quite possible if this is done.

I don't think you'll find a working or new one at any reasonable price. The HDMI transmitter chip is fairly replaceable on these if you're good with flat-pack IC's. Of course if the HDMI jacks are damaged, the surface mounted ones are almost impossible to replace.
Hey Mark, I was wondering if you can help me out with a problem. My Rx-v663 no longer works with any remotes. I'm assuming that it's the IR sensor. Is there an easy way to try and find the problem? I don't want to get rid of it, but without the remote I cannot access many modes and settings. Thanks :)
Mark Zacharias thank you for your time and quick reply. I have looked up how to do a reset and for some reason it doesn't seem to work. It states to hold the straight button while holding the power button but nothing happens. Am I doing that correctly? Are there more ways to get to the advanced menu? here is a different procedure: With unit OFF, press and hold "straight" and "audio select", and while still holding them down, press the Main Zone (power) button. The unit will enter diagnostic mode. DO NOT fool around in the menus except as I say because it can mess things up. The unit will turn on, display any previous error code (ignore) then show another display. (ignore) Turn the Program knob clockwise until the display says Preset INHI. This setting saves the current settings. Press the Scene 1 or Scene 2 buttons (sub-menu) til the display says PRESET RSRV. Turn the unit OFF. Next time unit is turned on all settings will be factory. If the remote still does not work, the remote receiver module is bad.

Hi Mark, can these op amps be culprits of DC drift in output stages? I have a RX-V765 with two channels having approx +1V DC on the outputs (FR & SR) I have checked (non powered) everything in the power amps and found nothing. Any help would be gratefully received.
Pete Sapwell More likely the surface-mount differential pair of transistors for each channel. Very small, pretty special and fairly difficult to replace.

It was only after I left work I realised that the inputs for the Amps are not DC coupled... and therefore the question was a bit daft :) Looking know at the diagram I can see the two transistors at the front end (Long Tailed pair) I have the amp in service position so will have another look in the morn. Do they become leaky? I may just order replacements (if I can find them, are they critical?) and see how that goes. Regards Pete
Pete Sapwell They Yamaha part number for the improved replacement is WF549900 (2SC3906K) I would recommend using that. Replace both on each channel. Actually wouldn't hurt to replace them all. 14 in all for a seven channel amp. Been there - done that.

Never worked on one of these. Sounds like the protection circuit is being triggered. Likely causes include a blown channel or a power supply fault - like a bad voltage regulator IC. One would need a service manual and a multimeter to start troubleshooting. Are you a technician?
Hi, Mark. I' m from Brazil and i have a Yamaha RX - V 675 it doesn' t powering up anything and it doesn' t stay in standby. I checked the power supply is all right, but the " PRY " the power supply of digital part doesn' t have 2,6V and the transformer is also good. Would be it defect in IC 153 ( R2A15220FP ) or PCB assembly ( ZF534400 ) ? Will be very grateful for your help. Thank you very much.
+Thiago Fernandes First you should try to "unlock" the receiver which may be in a protection mode. Press and hold the "info" and "tone control" buttons and while still keeping them depressed, press the "Main Zone" button. If the receiver turns on be prepared to write down the error code shown before it shuts back down. There is a chance the receiver will stay on. If so, turn the unit off and problem solved. If not, report back to me.
+Thiago Fernandes If you have 5.6 volts coming out of the standby power supply, and there is no activity on the PRY line coming back to the board, for the power relay to turn ON, I would say the digital board is bad. It is rather expensive - and the board must be "taught" what model it is in.

Starting Self-Diagnostic Function: While pressing the “TONE CONTROL” and “INFO” keys, press the “MAIN ZONE ” key to turn on the power, and release those 2 keys. The self-diagnostic function mode is activated. At this point the receiver is functionally reset. If it goes back into protection mode there is a component failure - like a blown amp channel or a power supply problem.

Thanks. The micro consumes too much power and supply voltage falls down to 1.8V (0.24A for 1.8V). I bought yamaha for 38 euro with shipping. 31 euro it's bit much for IC.

Its marked 220v and its right underneath the relay on the power supply board. I will take pic tonight.

Juzzy Roy Do check for any standby voltage from the "power" board. About 5.5 volts.

I don't think you'll find a working or new one at any reasonable price. The HDMI transmitter chip is fairly replaceable on these if you're good with flat-pack IC's. Of course if the HDMI jacks are damaged, the surface mounted ones are almost impossible to replace.
Hey Mark, I was wondering if you can help me out with a problem. My Rx-v663 no longer works with any remotes. I'm assuming that it's the IR sensor. Is there an easy way to try and find the problem? I don't want to get rid of it, but without the remote I cannot access many modes and settings. Thanks :)
Have you tried a full reset or checked the remote control Amp ID under the Advanced Setup menu?
Mark Zacharias thank you for your time and quick reply. I have looked up how to do a reset and for some reason it doesn't seem to work. It states to hold the straight button while holding the power button but nothing happens. Am I doing that correctly? Are there more ways to get to the advanced menu? here is a different procedure:
With unit OFF, press and hold "straight" and "audio select", and while still holding them down, press the Main Zone (power) button.
The unit will enter diagnostic mode. DO NOT fool around in the menus except as I say because it can mess things up.
The unit will turn on, display any previous error code (ignore) then show another display. (ignore)
Turn the Program knob clockwise until the display says Preset INHI. This setting saves the current settings.
Press the Scene 1 or Scene 2 buttons (sub-menu) til the display says PRESET RSRV.
Turn the unit OFF.
Next time unit is turned on all settings will be factory.
If the remote still does not work, the remote receiver module is bad.

Hi Mark, can these op amps be culprits of DC drift in output stages? I have a RX-V765 with two channels having approx +1V DC on the outputs (FR & SR) I have checked (non powered) everything in the power amps and found nothing. Any help would be gratefully received.
Pete Sapwell More likely the surface-mount differential pair of transistors for each channel. Very small, pretty special and fairly difficult to replace.

Hi Mark, I really appreciate you getting back to me on this one. It was only after I left work I realised that the inputs for the Amps are not DC coupled... and therefore the question was a bit daft :)
Looking know at the diagram I can see the two transistors at the front end (Long Tailed pair) I have the amp in service position so will have another look in the morn. Do they become leaky?
I may just order replacements (if I can find them, are they critical?) and see how that goes.

Pete Sapwell They Yamaha part number for the improved replacement is WF549900 (2SC3906K) I would recommend using that. Replace both on each channel. Actually wouldn't hurt to replace them all. 14 in all for a seven channel amp. Been there - done that.

Never worked on one of these. Sounds like the protection circuit is being triggered. Likely causes include a blown channel or a power supply fault - like a bad voltage regulator IC. One would need a service manual and a multimeter to start troubleshooting. Are you a technician?
Hi, Mark. I' m from Brazil and i have a Yamaha RX - V 675 it doesn' t powering up anything and it doesn' t stay in standby. I checked the power supply is all right, but the " PRY " the power supply of digital part doesn' t have 2,6V and the transformer is also good. Would be it defect in IC 153 ( R2A15220FP ) or PCB assembly ( ZF534400 ) ? Will be very grateful for your help.

+Thiago Fernandes First you should try to "unlock" the receiver which may be in a protection mode. Press and hold the "info" and "tone control" buttons and while still keeping them depressed, press the "Main Zone" button. If the receiver turns on be prepared to write down the error code shown before it shuts back down. There is a chance the receiver will stay on. If so, turn the unit off and problem solved. If not, report back to me.

+Thiago Fernandes If you have 5.6 volts coming out of the standby power supply, and there is no activity on the PRY line coming back to the board, for the power relay to turn ON, I would say the digital board is bad. It is rather expensive - and the board must be "taught" what model it is in.

Starting Self-Diagnostic Function:
While pressing the “TONE CONTROL” and “INFO” keys, press the “MAIN ZONE ” key to turn on the power, and release
those 2 keys. The self-diagnostic function mode is activated.
At this point the receiver is functionally reset.
If it goes back into protection mode there is a component failure - like a blown amp channel or a power supply problem.

The micro consumes too much power and supply voltage falls down to 1.8V (0.24A for 1.8V). I bought yamaha for 38 euro with shipping. 31 euro it's bit much for IC.
