When Edward Norton's character, The Narrator, strikes Tyler Durden in the ear, he actually hit Brad Pitt. Originally he was going to fake hit him, but David Fincher pulled him aside and told him to hit him in the ear before the scene. The moment Norton hits Pitt, you can see him laughing in pain while Norton smiles and laughs. Moreover, Pitt said in an interview that he did not want his parents to see the film, but he could not convince them otherwise. When they watched the scene with the chemical burns, they changed their minds.

In the book, the narrator explicitly says that he's shooting himself in order to kill Tyler. But it sounds like the ending of the book and movie are different.
