An interesting video!👍 I have 3 old 32 bit laptops and they are not as powerful as your Mac book is and they all perform well with Sparky Linux installed, the LXQT., version is worth trying in my opinion. PS., computer fans often become noisy when they are not getting enough air and sometimes they need a good clean and a regrease.

I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, if it wasn't such a pain I'd replace the thermal paste in the Macbook.

Its a nice machine. aesthetically and upgradability as well. But core2 duo is just a bit too slow nowadays. Especially the furnace 9400m gpu. I think 2nd/3rd gen is better way to go, even with just intel hd graphics. But again, some basic document work and youtube in 480/720p is fine. My grandparents would like this.

I suppose the end for the C2D is finally coming. I have them still in my head as being useful but nowadys where everything on the internet got much more demanding you shouldn't bother with them anymore.

If one wishes to run macOS, I'd say 3rd Gen Intel is the minimum. Ivy Bridge Macs have the Intel HD 4000 iGPU, which is Metal compatible. With more and more applications requiring Metal, like newer versions of iMovie, GarageBand and iWork (does Apple still use that name?), anything older than that is going to deliver a bad experience to the user.

Great machine. I have two of those, one black and one white, but they're 2008 models, which use the awful Intel X3100 GPU. Are you planning on using OpenCore Legacy Patcher to install newer versions of macOS? It would be interesting to see how Ventura runs on a system like this.

I suppose Ventura would run pretty poorly; right now I installed Catalina on it and it runs OK but nothing to write home about. The moment you open up two-three applications it becomes pretty sluggish and unusable.

@@MacintoshMen Yeah, the Core 2 Duo and lack of Metal compatible GPU really reduces the performance of systems like those. I suppose Monterey would fare a little better than Ventura? I have Monterey running on a 2012 Mac mini (Dual Core i5, 12 GB of RAM, 480 GB SSD) through OCLP and to me it seems to run better than Catalina ever did.

My wife's Duo Core is running Zorin OS 15.3 on a 500 gb SSD and 4 gb RAM. Firefox tweaked to block the ads being slung at ya. She uses Libreoffice and VLC. Runs better than El Capitan.

I'd like to try out Zorin OS at one point.

wait im using a macbook air 2010 and it runs super fast on ubuntu mate? it only uses 1.5 gb watching youtube at 720p and at idle its 600mb

im just confused on why your performance is so bad

    • @MacintoshMen

The Macbook Air's seem to be generally performing better than those Macbooks. Probably the GPU plays in there.

You don't have a problem with the airport after installing Ubuntu? I install Ubuntu on my Mac Mini and the airport just won't work. Since it can't go on the internet, that's no good.
