Finally An Honest Video On Miyamoto Musashi

- Let’s talk about a man that is as much legend as he is real: Miyamoto Musashi. You either know him as the greatest swordsman ever, the inspiration for half your favorite anime, or the philosopher you’re trying to shape your life after. Personally, I know him as a dude who caught his first body at age 13, and who didn’t stop until he increased that number drastically over 61 undefeated duels. Let’s tell the truth about Miyamoto Musashi, a story that also has to include his greatest rival: Sasaki Kojiro.
Notes:
I don’t have a lot of notes with this video, but I do want to point out that to this day, both Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro are forever immortalized with a statue on Ganryu Island, and also within everyday pop culture:
Dark Souls features Kojiro’s sword.
Vagabond, tells the tale of Miyamoto Musashi and devotes large portions to Kojiro
Jesse and James from Pokemon were originally called Musashi and Kojiro, League of Legend’s Yasuo and Yone are inspired by the two sword masters as well, and of course, Record of Ragnarok has Kojiro battling the god Poseidon.
Also, as you can probably tell, this video - and my previous video - were a bit shorter than my videos usually are. That's simply because, for one, these topics were easier to cover in less time, but also... all those videos that were thirty minutes to an hour long... they were taking a toll, man. I'm not gonna lie. So expect more videos in the 10-25 minute range, because it just really makes my life a whole lot easier. Hope y'all understand.

I also hope you all like the new art style, inspired by ancient Japanese art. Personally... I really love it.

For those who think that Musashi's way of fighting against Sasaki was dirty completely missed the point on his battle philosophy. Musashi entire approach to fighting is that there is no such thing as dirty fighting in a battle, a warrior uses everything in his power, on top of skill and hardwork, from environment to even random circumstances to win his battles. He never lost a fight mostly because of this same ideology that many swordsman at the time failed to realize. A warrior uses EVERYTHING at his disposale to win.
Ahh you too have actually read the book of five rings. Those who haven’t shouldn’t comment, he explains everything simply.
Musashi was more of a realist in an era when Japanese martial arts were influenced by years of peace. You see this with Kenjutsu and Bushido in general over Japanese history, people who never fought a day in their lives made it more about aesthetics and spirituality than actual practical fighting skills.
Somehow you'd think by samurai doctrine that it would be less honorable. To win in the ways Musashi had.
A philosophy to live by in all ages and circumstances.
Man I mean Musashi would be a menace to the modern society
He's a type of guy that would agree to fight someone in MMA only to bring a gun 😂😂😂
I'm Japanese, read The Book of Five Rings in Japanese and English, learned about Musashi in various way in both languages but never even cared to know about his father much and who actually raised him. It was interesting, informative and entertaining, thank you!
About his last duel, the story goes there was another man rowing the boat taking Musashi to the duel while Musashi was curving / modifying an extra oar (after having inspected the oar's quality). So, his weapon was a curved oar and his tactic was to compromise his opponent's visual acuity (messing up depth perception) by making him look towards the sun. Besides psychological tactic by making his opponent wait for 3 hours, he apparently wanted the tide to shift thereby Musashi's Uber guy would be able to row easily to get the heck out of there, away from angry dudes who just lost their master!
LMAO. What a man.
Waiting in a massive line at a restaurant for Mother’s Day; new Briefed video just dropped. Life is good.
Talk with your mother smh
This, bro! This.is.my.heart.
Musashi aspired me to be disciplined AF.
I've been strength training since winter 2004, picked up yoga six years ago, completely stopped processed food, and sugar.
I have zero addictions, zero indulgences not one: zero alcohol, zero cigarettes, zero porn, zero drugs, zero gambling. I'm free.
And last year at 48 years old, 5'3" with just one hour of initial practice, cleared a 30" box jump (the highest tier from a standard set).
No, I'm not better than anyone else - just strive and focus to be a better me. I'm my worst competitor.
Thank you so much for covering Musashi and thank you Musashi.
... focus to be a better me
Get it. This are the facts people keep forgetting. 💯
I don't know you but I'm rooting for you to succeed in whatever you want to do with that mind set.
@@kristophershephard7359 I appreciate ya.

How did Musashi inspire you to be disciplined exactly?
Was it from reading the 5 rings?
Here's the crazy part, in Japan the day your born is your 1st birthday. That means he was actually 12 when he killed his first man. Nuts

Oh...how patiently we have waited...blessings
best channel on youtube right now. great stuff as always 👏
Mushashi's two sword style may have been inspired by his father who was a jutte master. There is a rumor that Musashi only concussed Shinjiro and it was actually his followers who then pounced on him while he was helpless and killed him. Musashi actually stopped using sword before his battle with Shinjiro as he realized he did not need sword to win his bouts. Musashi was a tactical and strategic master without even realizing it until his later years that is when he analyzed his actions and figured out how he did what he did.
He never fought with 2 swords!!!!! Only practiced. FACT!
How am I only discovering this channel now? Excellent stuff.
welcome, welcome
I don’t know how you do it. You never miss.
This was all new to me, and I was in from the jump. Just amazing storytelling from you.

Musashi is the personification of adaptability, class and being a refined Jack of all trades 😎🤙
WORTH THE WAIT 🙏
Ohhhh a Musashi video from the greatest.
hope you enjoy 😊
They say his life is like an anime and it is kinda, The manga “Vagabond” is based on Musashi’s life and his story, but it is more than your basic action adventure story, it’s filled with powerful moments and fantastically written characters. One of the greatest things I’ve ever read , with a lot of wisdom, I’d describe it as a manga that makes you a better person
I'm like 3/4 of the way through. I'd recommend it to anyone... literally anyone. It's that fuckin good 👌🏽
I just wish it was finished cuz it’s a masterpiece bro
It takes a lot of creative liberties from the book it’s inspired by
Here first! Been waiting for a new upload
Vagabond manga is based on his story
Yep, great fictional story
Mushashis defeat over Sasaki was exactly the strat that Bobby Fischer implemented to defeat his Russian opponent in order to become the wold greatest chess player for a period of time..
This is one of the best videos I have watched about Miyamoto Musashi. Even though it is short, it is chock full of interesting facts about both the warrior and the time-period, Highly recommend this video. Thank you for producing this video!
Freaking love all the vids. I love all the humor and now my top favorite channel
Yojimbo was inspired by musashi and it was my first introduction to musashi when I was a teenager. Possibly the reason why I became obsessed with Japanese history 😂 this video is awesome
Very nice picks on the artwork used, bonus points for not using Vagabond art!
Talking about mother death, on mother's day is diabolical work 😂
Mother's Day in Poland 26 th May and in some other countries

Finally ive gotten the ending of vagabond, Thank you briefed
New subscriber. You do great work, sir. Keep it going. Peace
This is so good ... If only it was longer
YES! thank you!
The book of five rings is always overshadowed by the art of war and when I was younger I felt the same but as I grow older I tend to lean more towards mushashis work. Even though they are both sophisticated books I feel five rings takes more sophistication to appreciate.
Those images you used in the video would look amazing as wallpapers. Can you share the link for us to download them?
This man don't miss! Make sure you take care of yourself too bro bro!!
Your videos are amazing 🤩 do the prince next 😌

"blinded by the light like the weekend"😂the world plays in this video are on a whole other level
I’d say if any manga made musashi the most menacing , it was definitely the Baki manga

Well done.
Video itself was fine, but I didn't like the clickbait title. How was it an "honest" video about Musashi? It was a standard recap of his exploits.
Was it honest or not? Don't complicate things how you interpreted it doesn't mean it's click bait😂
Was it honest or not? Don't complicate things how you interpreted it doesn't mean it's click bait😂
This needs to be made into a movie fr bro
There are
It was made into 3. The samurai trilogy starring toshiro mifune
Sorry sense. Lol😆.. I read about musashi when I was into martial arts. Watched a few documentaries of famous Japanese warriors. But never heard it like this. Brilliant. Made my day🥋👍
Every time i hear Kojiro i think of fate stay night's Kojiro, nice to also know his OP attack was inspired by the real story
NEW VIDEO LET S GOOO
Broooooo I just made the link between Muashis first kill and his fight with the Demon. first kill was with wooden sword and his most notable kill was with a wooden sword. speechless.
the circle of life
Blinded by the light like the weekend.
A 13 years old beat a trained swordman to death with a quaterstaff. Dude was a menace from the very start.
Could you pls, talk about “The Epic of Gilgamesh”
I was waiting to see the hiten mitsurugi style. Sounds like this guy is the inspiration for Kenshin Himura.
The truth about Mushashi was that he was a dirty fighter, he knew how to win fights but only if he could twist in his favor. The fact that he is a posterboy for "working hard" is kinda hilarious when he only saw the value of that towards the end of his life.
Yeah that's true I witness a few of his duels too
You clearly don’t know the book of the Five Rings nor Musashi’s philosophy…The latter in which Musashi had believed that a warrior must use all the tools at his disposal, whether it be hardwork or one’s own environment.
Bruh if you haven't noticed when it comes to fighting, no matter fair or unfair, twisting the fight in your favor is how you win. So by your analogy he was a great fighter. Even boxers go in to a match with thoughts of twisting the match to their favor. Either by hammering the opponents body until their gas tank is empty or a one punch knockout power, either way twisting the fight to your favor is how you win. So musashi was a great swords man.
And to talk about hard work you think he would have gotten to being the greatest swords man without understanding the importance of hard work? No man.
@@sadikmakwela1255 Fights had rules especially back then, if Mushashi was alive today, he'd be the type of boxer who would put concrete in his gloves. He chose to bring sticks to a swordfight.
@@gimmeyourrights8292 then they should have forfeited the fight. Since he had broken alot of the rules. Bro you talking as if you were there. Musashi won by any means necessary thats that.
man the real deal
Many of his duel stats are somewhat inflated as he ambushed some of his opponents, but that doesn’t diminish his skills as he was often ambushed himself and by multiple opponents at once and he still defeated them.
A Book of Five Rings sits prominently on my book shelf. And unlike most of my books, it doesn't collect dust. You can always re-interpret something in your life, especially an obstacle, with his words.
Great story, and well told. I really enjoyed it. Only one real issue about it... repeating that the sword was 100 plus cm sounds impressive, but this doesn't do it justice. 100 cm is only slightly over 3 feet, after all. While some were that short, many of the no-dachi blades well well over twice that length. Other than this one very minor thing, great job.
underated
Nice. Heres one for you. The Greek hero Achilles vs the Ethiopian champion Memnon during the Trojan war. It was supposedly the greatest of all Achilles duels yet the least known.
This was amazing 😂

What's the name of the movie (scenes) you used for the beginning of the video? With hiroyuky sanada
thats from westworld
@@Briefed_Mythology thank you
Musashi philosophy is like bring guns to a sword fight
I watched the trilogy with Toshiro Mifune. I thought to myself "What a horrible life." Everyone kept trying to fight him just for ego reasons. He was never given any peace. He shoulda thrown down his swords and joined a monastery.
Musashi was a real sociopath in his youth.
As you are noting how his life is full of anime cliches, I absolutely agree. I'm listening currently to the Brian Nishii narrated audiobook version of Eiji Yoshikawas' Musashi novelization and it's obvious from the beginning, how every shounen anime and manga takes concepts and elements from his life and Eiji Yoshikawas novel, to this day. And it's freaking beautiful.
I didn't finish the video yet, but you might wanna do a separate video the novel because BY GOD it is the best epic ever. Fuck Tolkien, Fuck Rand, fuck more modern authors like Herbert, Rowling and co., no other book in the 20th century comes close to the incredible beauty that is the novel Musashi.
An emotional rollercoaster like many of the anime and manga that followed, but by far more intelligent in it's philosophies and values provided, the world building, the character building, all the character arcs, the overarching story, a true master piece of 20th century fiction, if not THE true master piece of 20th century fiction.
Miyamoto Musashi the dawg of real life anime
So my guy Musashi shows up 3 hours late have just CARVED the sword he was gonna duel Kojiro with. That is an alpha move if I have ever seen one.
