Does the Threadripper 2970WX still have what it takes to be a competent workstation in 2024? I sure hope so, because Rett is expecting this system to last for the next 10 years. And the InWin Dubili will probably outlive us both.

A classic Rum Cocktail in the Swizzle!
Mix 1/2 fresh lime, a barspoon of Honey and 4 dashes bitters into a glass and stir well. Pour that into a Collins glass filled with crushed ice. Add 2oz of Spiced Rum and a few pinches of granulated sugar. Then... Swizzle! Garnish with a lime wheel, strawberries, mixed berries, or any other fruit you desire. Gorgeous case. Inwin can make some of the wackiest, mundane or prettiest cases.
The case does look great and $320 (shipping and taxes) is a premium but acceptable price. What I can't get past though is the lack of 5 1/4" bays. I have an internal drive for ripping media and also multiple card readers for ingesting from cameras. I don't know why someone would have a giant tower and then go though the trouble of having port replicators, card readers, and other external drives cluttering up their workspace. If I were to build a non-rack server though, it would likely be this case.
Think you answered your own question. You get a big case with no 5.25” drive bays because you have big components or otherwise need a lot of space but don’t need that expansion, or need it so rarely that an external solution is fine.
I still use Blu-Ray drives in my main PC so if I were gonna get another case without the drive bays I may have to get an external enclosure and make use of e-sata. It's not ideal but really good cases with drive bays are getting harder to find. It's a trend these days about not having any optical drives.
@@Darkk6969 external enclosures work just fine over USB. no need for eSATA headaches.
Well being a flat pack case it would seem to me that modding community could address a lot of this. Swap out the front panels for ones that have a few optical drive bays for people that want them, maybe print a drive cage that covers the entire front for hot swap bays for a server, or just add a bunch of drive pays that mounts to the front fan mount and the bottom fan mount for a server.
I would love to see a cheaper version of this case or at least some optional parts made available for it. For example a solid panel to replace the glass.
I am looking forward to see what people do with this.
Being a flatpack case I thought it'd be slightly cheaper, but $230 is similarly priced to many other high end non-flatpack EATX cases (including the preassembled version at $250). A comparably sized Phanteks Eclipse P600S costs $120-$150 depending on version and vendor. Wish it was slightly better priced, but maybe they'll come down over time.

You can build this case with the handles as the feet with no handles (upside down) or as jeff has with the plastic feet and handles on top

i wish second hand market in France for Threadripper was as good as in the US or China ! been a while im looking for a cheapo workstation combo for 3D rendering so i can slap in my old Pascal GPUs in it and enjoy the full x16 lanes of PCIe per cards !
Ugh... our TR secondhand market is still pretty terrible. Motherboards especially are outrageous. $400 USD for most used TR4 boards still.
@@CraftComputingBro, you don’t even wanna know about the used DC hardware situation in Europe. A server + $800 USD shipping is sometimes cheaper than same server + 20€ shipping, although I’d never do that due to import problems + having to pay taxes on it at import.

well, both are true. ETH went to proof of stake, yes, but proof of stake depends on always on systems that can handle the throughput. an ASIC is the best way to handle the workload and the method employed by large stake holders that keep the chain valid.

@@johngaltline9933 No ASICs exist for ethereum 2.0 as ASICs are specifically made to be fast at computing a certain hashing algorithm for the sake of mining. The system requirements for running an ethereum validator are quite low - you could get away with running it on a raspberry pi. We've come far ! 🤩

@@alexanderr6106Right because people are going to spend $7k - $15k a gpu for mining... They aren't readily available because Nvidia primarily makes them for their enterprise customers. IE Microsoft is gobbling up h100s like a monster to power their chatgpt servers. Microsoft has also been gobbling up a100s for years as well.

As an ex-owner of several Mac Pros, I can agree with you about their build construction and aestetics: they look fantastic, and feel extremely solid to work on (also, the ~22kg weight of those machines helps with the feeling of quality). Honestly, I wouldn't compare the looks of this case to the Mac Pros: I don't find the bolts on the front and on the side visually pleasant, and the internals are just an empty space to fill in (which of course is to be expected, since this case is for standard PC components while the Mac Pros had completely custom motherboards, PSU etc, thus they could engineer the internals to optimize airflow and maintenance). I ended up selling those beautiful machines, as the ~220W idle power they required would not justify the computing power they provide (it's 12 year old stuff, after all), and built myself a pc with a Fractal Design North case, since Apple is not interested in making professional stuff that is actually usable by professionals anymore

To fix the feet issue with that case just get some steel strips bend them into a loop. You would also have to weld and grind it flat. Aluminum would work as well. Color matching might be an issue but it could work.
We have eight 6900XT lying around in our warehouse. They came out of a mining rig, that, as far as I could tell, never turned a profit. Sadly, they won't sell one to me since selling it would mean getting 400€ back for what used to be a 1000€ card not too long ago. And someone higher up doesn't like the sound of that and seems to think that they will gain value again or something.

Sailor Jerry rum is fantastic, it used to be my go-to. Try Flor de Cana sometime if you get the chance, it's a little easier on you the next day and it's delightful.
Nice case, but white/silver is going to show any dust and dirt immediately. I'm still rocking my Lian Li PC-A76 (Black Monolith) full tower case from 2012, for a custom home for my gutted HP Z420 motherboard and peripherals. Personal preference I guess, but the Lian Li has loads of internal space and support for up to 12 full-size hard drives, so it works nicely for an easily expandable NAS setup.😉
Nice case easy to work in, especially if you forget something on mobo like I had issue.last night. Forgot to put CMOS battery lol and in tight corner. Arhhggg had to take mobo out. Hey turn that case top handles on bottom and add rubber feet. Keep top flat.

You make me wanting to build a good old standard ATX build instead of my current MATX one :o (with a 3 slots 3090 and a 10GbE card, there's no more space). As I progress in my projects, I understand the need to have many many PCIE lanes and extension slots available.
The InWin case is pretty, but at $250 I should not be assembling it myself.. 😛

I've not been a real big fan of the mac pro cheese grater case design. But I have to say, this InWin Dubili case could grow on me. It has a nice industrial look to it. And it is begging for a custom loop to fill the space.
Case looks great, I love the industrial look with the bolts on the outside.

I am 100% with you on the change of fans, especially for this build. The fans chosen are very nice! I personally would have gone with a custom Radeon card that had a matching white aesthetic, or maybe an RTX card of some flavor with a matching white theme, but that is personal preference. Overall, very nice build! EDIT: Jeff, if you revisit this built for a custom loop(highly recommend, people love those kinds of video's), make sure you address the PSU color theme as well. CoolerMaster makes a white theme PSU, maybe ask them to sponsor you one and show it off! A white theme PSU with matching cables would be a great touch up to a nearly perfect build! EDIT2: I make my Swizzles at little differently. Not a fan of honey so I use 2 teaspoons of cherry syrup(good cheery syrup not the cough syrup type crap) with an ounce of reasonable quality grenadine and an ounce of lime juice. I also prefer Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, but yours is great too!

Also, there is a bug with Nvidia 3000 series that is NEVER getting fixed where the sound shuts off until I change my speaker setting; I thought that happened until I saw your on screen text.
Beautiful build Jeff! InWin should of at least extended the orange-red color base down to the feet. The white just doesn't work well.

I have 2 g5 cases modded to ATX (Laserhive parts) . But the front in the G5 is not big to store drives. I think this pc is bigger

The case looks nice .would have been nice to see counter sunk fixings or spot welded hidden studs .with nuts on the inside "not much space and might interfear with the rads .but extra processes raise the price .it looks mac ish
I think this case almost looks good, but I don’t like all the external bolts on the front and side. It makes sense on the back but the bolts are almost a statement and I just think it doesn’t work for me. Happy for anyone who likes it though.
Would be really neat... if it offered a metal panel as an alternative for the TG side panels that are on everything these days. I mean if you like TG, you do you. However not all of us want this and have less and less choices when we want a new/current chassis rather than resorting to a much older chassis that are sometimes more expensive now than when new.
The fact that this case is most certainly gorgeous but then doesn't have a PSU shroud really kills me inside. Especially considering the clear side panel and the price.

Yes, you can swap the handles around and 86 the feet. But I like a case with top handles :-)

The "handles" at the top can be used as the feet can't they? Think that was featured in the amazon listing picture, but if you hate the ABS as much, might be a worthwhile change.

What should one use a 2970wx for like what I need someone to tell me with details I’ve heard vms and dbs and extra pcie lanes but what else !? What special tasks that you wouldn’t go for a 5950x
PCIe connectivity. Multiple cards like 10Gb, HDMI capture, audio interfaces, etc. Most consumer platform motherboards support a GPU and a single x4 expansion card.
Fans that don't have a Shroud or soild Covers around them are a lot less effective - some of the Air just circulates around their Frame. Nice Build anyways!

The fact that nobody makes a giant dual tower air cooler for threadripper/epyc systems is a crime. I know they have fairly low power density but aesthetically I need something like that
Be Quiet, Cooler Master, Noctua, Ice Giant...and plenty more just typing 'threadripper air cooler' in a search engine.
at least some of the top end amd gpu are supporting rocm now - the aesthetics mean almost nothing and just forego the water cooling - will only add extra time and money and maintenance to the build

Because air coolers never spring leaks all over your $3-5K worth of components trapped inside the case. That's why.
Working with a 3,1 on my desk every day, this case kinda, sorta, has the same vibe... but if the look matters to you, it looks like a cheap, alliexpress knockoff from someone that heard about what an old pro looks like, then used spare parts they had laying around to build it. I'm sure it is a great case, looks nice to build in, but for the aesthetic, ridges and bolts sticking out, flat bars bolted on to the sides, etc, does not at all feel like an old Pro. To me, it would look far better without the straps on the top, just being it's own thing, instead of using big bolts sticking out all over the place while trying for the look of a seamless case design... This coming from someone that has no care for what a case looks like, using strips of vinyl window blinds to build little shelves for the HDDs in my server and having cables tangled everywhere.
Yeah, it's a pity that AMD didn't do a Zen3 Threadripper for the socket SP3 (TRX40). I'll just have to muddle along with my 3960X and ASrock Taichi motherboard as best I can. Totally NOT interested in a forklift upgrade to the WRX series. Way to spendy.

The vent holes in the front go nowhere since there's a shroud behind it. That shroud covers the tips of the fan blades where most of their airflow would've been. So, it completely restricts the airflow, destroying the function of the holes. It's just for design, and they went with cheese grater chic. What a show stopper! Get a real job, Jeff.
As much as I love AMD why are you using their card when CUDA cores would be much more useful for editing...

InWin … if you're reading the comments on these things … This is a BIG motherboard in a BIG case. But the criticism of cable lengths… Pls make shorter, wider workstation/small server version of this. PSU behind motherboard, place to slot in a couple of drives for storing video not used in current projects, etc. That's gonna be on its way out even for creatives in 4-5 years but right now it's getting hard to find a case that will accommodate drives and cool them well.
Pls keep the cheesegrater front across the width. Pls replace the plastic feet. Caster option? Maybe. My "workspace" (read: a couple meters from my kitchen and bedroom) is prone to high levels of dust. Computer. Off. Floor. But consider the idea at least, because computers on wheels are really handy when they start getting heavy.
