Can I draw the European countries from memory?? (harder than it looks!)

- Today we take on the Europe Country Drawing Challenge from Hugequiz and put the tiny photographic section of my brain to the test.
With no clues other than the coast and a few mountains and lakes, I attempt to draw every single European country from memory in a bid to score as many points as possible.
It seems that despite having studied maps of Europe for hours on end, I don't know my country outlines as well as I thought I did...

Hey Tom. If you're looking for a video idea then I've got one that may be good or may be a complete car crash (pun to become evident). I was watching a dash cam compilation video and saw one of the clips was somewhere I recognised so I jumped onto Google maps to have a look at the area. Then while I was looking I thought that dash cam clips could work as a pseudo Geoguessr and we'd also have some poor driving to laugh at as well. So the video idea is to use a dash cam compilation video (you'll have to be careful because some give the location) then try and locate the exact location on Google Earth. I think there's many factors that make it compelling. You've got the different camera qualities might make signs easier or harder to read, different clip lengths give varying bits of info, different looks of different areas, different accents of the drivers when they are swearing at other drivers. All aspects which slightly change it from Geoguessr enough to make it more unique. You can also partake in the dash cam compilation comments tradition of naming a TotW (Tw*t of the Week).
This is excellent.
If I remember correctly, Zi8gzag actually did this in one of his videos. Check that out!

Yeah we’re all geography nerds here but I believe damn near all of us would struggle with this. Especially those of us not from Europe. I feel I’d do good with the US states tho but maybe that’s just overconfidence on my end lol
@@EsotericThoughts93 I feel like US states are easier shapes generally. So many of them are just blocky. I would do terribly in both US states and European countries, personally.
@@Peksisarvinen yeah for the most parts. The states that always did confuse me were Maryland/Delaware and the exact positions of the New England states. The rest of them are super easy imo especially if you what states border what rivers and mountains. The Mississippi River alone borders like a third of the states lol
I live in the balkans so i believe i have the edge on this
Imagine being from the UK and the country you’re best at drawing is France 😂
Why ever not? The two countries have intertwined histories - sometimes hostile, sometimes not. And they have been allies, more or less, ever since the Entente Cordiale, about 125 years ago. (Also, France, the 'hexagon', has a pretty easy shape to remember, whereas spatially Great Britain is far more complex!)
Hey Tom, the internationally recognised border of Ukraine is from 1991, after the fall of the soviet union. This includes crimea, and Russia's annexation of it and the Donbas starting in 2014 was and remains internationally rejected.

maybe thats an easter egg?
On the one hand this is incredibly impressive. I wouldn’t have the first idea how 2/3 of the countries are shaped much less which other countries they border but you could have made this so much more accurate by zooming in more and following rivers lakes etc.
I am impressed with how well you did at the end. I doubt many people could do any better unless they have a very niche profession where they have to know the borders accurately
I like how you annexed Flanders, thank you on behalf of the Dutch
He gave more land to the germans than we got from the belgians lmao. He made me live in Germany
A recommendation would be to zoom in a bit more, and remember that borders usually follow rivers, or watersheds (drainage basins) , another example of something you probably already knew was the lake constance border .
yeah but kinda ruins the "remembering shape challenge"
Would be interesting if Hugequiz published the average european borders
I claim that triangle between Austria, Hungary and Czech. According to your map it doesn’t belong to any country, right? 😂
The climate in that area is very pleasant to grow wine.
This video was so much fun! I would have totally failed, because all those “new” countries didn’t exist back then when I had to learn the map of Europe in geography classes… 😳 I definitely should spend some time on it. Thanks for reminding.
That's seriously well done!
Plenty of right hand practice due to working on animations huh Tom?
Loved this one, really interesting!
On the first day of AP European History class during my senior year of high school in 1999, my teacher had everyone draw a map of Europe on a blank sheet of paper. We also had to label all the countries and many of the most important physical features. My map was so accurate that many people accused me of cheating or even tracing a real map. Of course I scored the highest and I still have this map over 25 years later so I can make a video showing everyone eventually. I definitely would have done a really good job with this game than Tom!

Created a whole new country after drawing France - the gap between Germany/Belgium/Holland/France
Lithuanian here. It’s alright, Tom, I’m not sure any of us could have done much better tbh. Though I do wish you had gotten the shape at least somewhat right…
Would love to see you do this on other continents, Asia Africa and Central America would be tough
it'd be completely impossible tbh
In estonia you drew the exact borders of how far estonians soldiers went in their independece war in ww1, before the peace agreement
I‘d love to see you try a version of this focusing on bodies of water because that could be quite helpful.
As an estonian thank you for restoring the land that russia took from us
The commentary on this is just hilarious.
I love how the Czech border is practically there from the start :D
Fun game and impressive performance, If we werent heading into WW3 already, we sure are now. I know there is a piece of unclaimed land on the border of Croatia and Serbia, but I am quite confident Tom has exaggerated it here haha.
7:39 this war has thrown a spanner in the works 😂😂😂
this was so much fun to watch id love to see some of other continents too or maybe even a uk counties one if that's an option? looking forward to the straight line mission nonetheless
the best strategy for the micro-nations is probably to draw them much larger than they actually are-- better to get a low score from a large area with the country included than no score because you've gone the right size but aren't nearby! great video as always :)
particularly since the score system seems to be the direct average of % of country and % in country: meaning if you got 100% of country but only 1% in country, it's still 50 points
Do you think you would attempt this again, but taking much longer and zooming in more trying to get the exact borders more accurate? Not necessarily having to do random countries, as that may make it more complicated. You could do like one country a day or something and see how accurate you can get it.
As a Belarusian i can tell you did surprisingly well for a...non-belarussian xdd
Usually not a soul in the world knows where we are
As a dude with a grandmother who was born in Liechtenstein I winced a bit at that placement, but I suppose it wasn’t a bad guess.
Checking big rivers Like Mosel and Donau would have helped, I think. Well done anyway.
it was so funny to see so many countries turn into blobs and especially my own 😂
You did surprisingly well
Branching out into cartography. Nice!
25:37 that giggity got me 🤣
It was the dead pan delivery of it 😅😂
gg bruh definitely better than I could have done, this was a cool challenge lol and think you did a good job with Ireland, tis a very tricky border in many ways lol
The way the point system works it's very easy to get a score of at least 50 every time because the points are the average of the percentage of the drawn shape inside the country (a) and the percentage of the country inside the drawn shape (b) so if you just draw a very big shape around the country there will be 100% of the country in the shape and a tiny percentage of the shape will be in the country.
a =
The points seems to just be the average of % of the country you covered and % of the area you drew actually within the country. Gaming the points should be pretty easy. For instance: Just drawing a box around all of Europe should be above 50 points for every country (averaging 100 and some small number). This would work particularly well for the small countries. If you drew a circle 10 times the size of Andorra, but you are sure it surrounds it, you’d score 55 rather than 0 for missing it completely
Lithuania😢😢😢
Lithuania!!!
Since you can zoom so close, using rivers would be a great help when drawing borders
Swede, here. I'm very impressed that you managed to get 90% of Sweden right. In fact, it probably would've been 100% if you'd included
the two islands found to the east of our south-eastern coast.
loved this!
would love you to pay attention to borders more for a while (as you will inevitably do) and have another go at it whenever :D
Damn! You only got me by 1 point. I scored 2963.

Thought you were a footy fan Tom. Couldn't believe it when you cut out the Louis II Stadium on the Monaco round!
What people forget about Republic of Ireland is that the northern part of the Irish Republic goes all the way to the north coast and is actually further north than Northern Ireland
Tom drawing a very small Bulgaria: Yea, that's about right. 🙃 Me seeing the Danube river (which makes a big part of Bulgaria's border with Romania) right there just a bit to the north: 😬
😄
Also.. to make Lithuania medieval, you'd have to draw it a lot bigger (see Grand Duchy of Lithuania) 😅
There were equally-distant and identical sirens where I am that started with this video, so I was VERY confused for about 20 seconds
this was a truly wild episode
Cracking attempt Tom. Bell-land, will there be enough room...?
I'd like to see a challenge where you draw all these countries on a blank piece of asetate or tracing paper, then afterwards put it back over an atlas. Make you do the coasts as well. Plus abit more lo-fi.
Alternative though - just have you make your own illustrated map someday. Scrapbook your adventures on it. Here be farmers!
For San Marino, it might have been smart to just draw it bigger - might guarantee you get at least a few points for having it within your border
Just for including maastricht you get a pass from me. Groningen? Who needs 'em.
As a Bellander myself, I enjoyed the video.
The point system at denmark shows you got 99% of the country, but only 60% of your area is in the country. That implies that were right and the top part should be excluded.
Also adding ontk that, by the ratio of both percentages you can know how the size of your drawing was. Big in percentage small of percentage means size too small, other way around means size too big. If the percentages are similar you got the size about right (excluding if you got 0% on both)
