Re: the answer to your last IG question - I think people have a tendency to throw others under the bus to elevate themselves by adopting a "I'm not like other booktubers" or "I'm not like mainstream booktubers" mentality. Making different content other than TBRs/hauls, not having a giant bookshelf of books, and not taking publisher deals doesn't make you any better than other booktubers. You can feel special or proud of your content without dismissing others for theirs. I've received compliments from people that are backhanded digs at bigger/mainstream booktubers and it's really not necessary. You can compliment or appreciate a booktuber without insulting others, it's not one way or the other.

This whole big booktubers vs. small booktubers topic really should not be a thing! So much of the drama is based off of assumptions smaller creators make about bigger booktubers!
And then there's of course the debate over what ACTUALLY separates big booktubers from small booktubers!!! My answer is very little. At the end of the day everyone's reading, talking about books and making friends through doing so. The subscribers don't change that!
This video was amazing, Emma as usual! Hope you're doing super well!!! 💙💫

I've bee watching bokktube for years now and over the years I've definitely come across people who constantly hate on 'bigger' booktubers and it annoys the hell out of me. Those 'bigger' booktubers should be commended for all the hard work they've done over the years to get to where they are and not hated on because they do sponsorships or stick to the friends they've had for years.

Hey Emma, I just wanted to thank you for your honest opinion. It takes a lots of guts to share your honest opinions, especially when people have a tendency to take things personally or react negatively to something they don't agree to. Seeing someone who is so open about their experiences on booktube gives others a realistic view of what they want to get into.

I get that this is a difficult topic to frankly (at least without pissing off anyone) which has resulted in a lot of "real talk" videos with not a lot of real talk :D It was refreshing to see a video with actual opinions on the topics and I think this video is a good example on how to say what you think while not shitting on anyone else.

I love your energy and confidence and I can see how exceptionally comfortable you are in front of the camera. I can't even imagine how hard you've worked to get this far. One thing that stood out for me in the videos I watched today, is the negativity, which is quite scary. ALL of this video is just. incredible. thank you for being such a sound voice for this community and addressing the criticisms towards bigger booktubers because it frustrates me to no end! it's the "i'm not like other girls" of this community.
i also hate the idea that we can't get excited about or shouldn't talk about a book we haven't read yet. first impressions and key points are crucial in recommendations, as any bookseller will tell you. we don't have to have read the book to know that it contains a feel-good story or a romance with this one specific element that the person asking will love. and the same goes for booktubers, probably even deeper, because booktubers can express excitement in different ways than booksellers can on the sales floor. so really, i don't understand the hate.

  • @AissataAmadou

I've been loving your open discussion type of videos lately. I definitely agree with you that it's not okay for smaller book tube channels to lash out on the account of numbers. You made a really good point that I liked when you said people have different boundaries that deserve to be respected. Not everyone is all open doors and that's okay. Especially when you have a lot of people that want to reach out to you and be friends. As perfect as it would be, we don't have the capacity to be friends with everyone we encounter.

I love this so much!!! there is so much to delve in to when it comes to the booktube community. I totally agree about TBRs, hauls, and wrap ups, they've been around for so long because they work!!! and it really is nice to have a format to follow when you're first getting started. I also love the rise of reading vlogs because they're really easy to make (just a few mins each day) but they help you get to know and connect with the creator on a more personal level. they're definitely always my fave vids to film and to watch!
it sucks that people have to bash bigger booktubers, especially for things like when a publisher reaches out. at the end of the day, booktube is doing a HUUUGE service for the publishing industry by promoting their books (and tbh I think a book getting hype on booktube/twitter can definitely impact the sales) and publishing is a business. Doing business with your brand isn't anything to bash anyone about - its strategic and smart for everyone and helps to support an industry we all love :) great vid 💖

As a new-ish booktube creator, I love watching bigger booktubers as they give me so many ideas when it comes to video ideas. The "generic" videos for booktube are so important and I totally agree with you. As a new booktuber, I tried to film a "reading experience" type video, and it was a complete disaster and the worst video I've made to date. It was just too much video for me, as someone that barely knows how to use her editing software at the moment. Working with more simplistic videos has helped me gain a lot of confidence so I can hopefully go back to making bigger videos later.
Additionally, book hauls, TBRs, and wrap-ups are the main way that I can decide if I want to subscribe to a booktuber. If I watch a TBR and all the Booktuber does is talk about all the non-fiction and memoirs they'll be reading, this channel probably isn't going to correlate with the sorts of books I like to read, as a fantasy and contemporary fan.

I did tweet this but took it down and posted it here instead.
Hey, Emma, I just watched your newest video and I applaud you for the way you addressed each question and topic. You brought up important points and did it such a way that didn’t bash one person or group of people. On topic of “big v small booktubers.” I haven’t been in the community for long and you’re right, there’s an overwhelming amount of love from everyone however there is still a lot of negativity. I thought it would be fun to try out CZcams myself but the more and more I see things like.. “Bigger booktubers don’t care” or “they get all of the opportunities,” “everyone’s a booktuber now just for the free books” and other things that were said, I’m losing motivation to film, to participate in the community. The comments may not be directed towards me but they still hurt. ‪I don’t feel extremely comfortable making videos and uploading them if there’s always hate towards everyone and what they do. People are looking up to the bigger booktubers but also bashing them. They talk about how they want smaller booktubers to get recognition but they themselves don’t give them the time of day. It just makes me feel unwelcome and like I’m not doing what the audience wants. Personally I watch booktubers with thousands of subscribers, hundreds, and dozens; some well known and some not known at all. Over the past few months I have started watching less and less because it’s hard to support someone that can say and do such awful things. I have also experienced the “getting ready to comment something sweet and then deleting it because of what’s said in the video.” I really liked this person with this person and thought I could make a friend but all they did was bash and throw shade at small booktubers for hating bigger booktubers and bigger booktuber for not giving smaller ones a chance. It hurts that they generalized every small booktuber that way, it just makes everyone think of us like that. I stopped uploading videos and logged off Twitter for awhile because of how frustrated ‬things are ‪in the community. I’m back on Twitter but haven’t uploaded any videos and it seems nothing has changed. I’m itching to film and upload again but terrified of what’s going to happen. Hopefully I overcome that soon and start uploading again because I really enjoyed it, even if it wasn’t all about books. I’m going to BookCon this year and plan to attend a few other events. Its something I’ve been wanting to do for years and I think it would be a good opportunity to meet you all myself and see what everyone is really like.‬

I wish more people would get the chance to know you in real life at least once. When I met you at Adam Silvera’s signing for We both died you were the sweetest person ever! I haven’t met any other big booktubers. I hope I someday can if they are as nice as you. I love your channel, even if I don’t get to comment as frequently as I used to. Keep the great work Emma. People are mean because they are jealous. And you shouldn’t or can’t stop shinning because some people don’t like stars. Hope you are doing well and we get to see each other soon :) I might go to NYC again this year so who knows! In the meantime I hope you keep doing the challenges with Michael. They are my favs! And I hope you got to put on good use the Shadowhunters totebag :) have a great day!

As a viewer, I have to say the sub count on the Booktubers I follow doesn't matter to me, and a lot of the time I don't even check or notice it. I watch based on who has the personality I enjoy watching for hours on end, while posting content I like (reading vlogs, etc), and that's that. Counts, and how long they've been posing videos doesn't matter at all as long as there's something to watch regularly. Now that I've taken a look, I have some subscriptions who have under 1k and some far into 6 digits, so it's incredibly varied. Good content is good content, for the viewer it's 100% about the person you're watching, that's what keeps us clicking - you! 💜💜💜

I think you were very well spoken about all of these questions. For me I always want to do this tag or tags like this but I am terrified with the idea of stepping on people's toes or pissing someone off! Also trying to be able to merge a booktube channel and my author tube channel has been crazy difficult because I feel as though I'm in this strange in between space of not being either but loving both so much😂 I like how you spoke about things that might make people made and didn't even care! I would love for you to do another video like this answering questions about booktube! I always find it interesting learning others opinions 💕

Really appreciate your honest thoughts on these topics, and I have to agree with you - as a viewer only, I've never seen a "big" booktuber say anything nasty or mean toward smaller channels, and in fact most everyone I watch with a high subscriber count often does small channel shout-outs and such. Whereas I have seen a lot of smaller channels snipe at larger ones for all kinds of things, and honestly......I think there might be a bit of jealously involved, with some of them at least, regarding how many books larger channels get sent and such. But also, doesn't everyone who starts a channel hope one day to become a "big" channel? I know it's common to act overly humble and be like "I never thought I'd even get 50 subscribers!!!" but I'm pretty sure while no one *expects* to reach 5 or 6 digit subscriber counts, they all certainly hope to do so...and then guess what? SURPRISE you're now a "big" booktuber. It's just a lot of silliness, and I'm glad you're able to discuss it so intelligently and concisely.

Honestly, I always love seeing your comments on other people’s videos, especially when they’re smaller. It just shows that you’re not only creating content but interacting and consuming others’ as well, which is what the platform’s for. This was enlightening and very different from videos I’ve seen discussing the same topic. ❤️

I love the “typical” Booktube videos especially wrap ups. It really shows your opinion on a book. I miss the reviews, book talks, and challenges. I love the tags as well. They were always so fun. I’m not a humongous fan of reading vlogs (just my personal preference) but I would still give them a try. To the tea with Booktubers, I do agree that it should be kept privately. There shouldn’t be whole scandals in the community in my opinion. This is coming from someone who loves to hear about drama, but this is Booktube not a drama channel XD
In turn with the whole small Booktubers vs. big Booktubers debate, it’s stupid. I never care about your subscriber count. Only if you can recommend me good books, I enjoy your content, and your personality. There really shouldn’t be hate on big Booktubers because it’s just dumb. I just hope people can forget the hate and just move to be a well rounded community. Great video!

The shame in the Booktube community is astounding. There are so many criticisms regarding book genres, “original content,” and big book collections that just don’t make sense. That shame seems to be from a place of wanting to be better than someone else. I think it’s insane that smaller booktubers can have such a sense of entitlement in their expectations from big booktubers. As a small booktuber myself, I’ve never thought anything negatively about you or other bigger booktubers. I just don’t understand the hate that you receive solely based on a higher subscription count. I love your channel and I love your videos! 💙

Totally late to the party here! You always give such eloquent answers and I really enjoy hearing your opinions on the greater BookTube community.
I can't (lies, I totally can) believe that there's so much hate directed at successful, big BookTubers. Sometimes the community feels so vicious and I wish we could all come together and just love books. As a small BookTuber getting close to that coveted 1,000 subscriber goal, I worry about gaining visibility and opening myself up to unkindness! I've already had a taste of hate comments (people find my accent confusing, weirdly enough) and I'm not thrilled about it potentially increasing 😂

I started subbing to you right before the shadowhunters videos [amazing A+ content btw would love to see your take on the new episodes] and your channel has developed so well over the years since. Loved your answers since most of the people doing this tag are much smaller channels. I can't even imagine the level of hate that larger creators get just for being themselves. I get the filter part as well. I swear and talk shit on my channel but I also know when to mind my own business.

  • @StoriesForCoffee

I love this tag and everything you said! I agree, TBR videos are ones I never really click on since I want to hear a booktuber’s thoughts about the book rather than them just saying the synopsis, but book hauls and wrap ups are so fun to watch! I love hearing about recent purchases and how excited people are to read the books they acquired just as much as I love hearing people’s thoughts about the books they read each month. It’s just a matter of making your video fresh and unique that will help it stand out more, even if it’s a “generic” video idea

Speaking as someone who really got into reading after starting to watch booktube, generic videos like TBRs and wrap-ups helped me find books that I wanted to read and fine tune my reading taste as well. Now I have like a set of booktubers that are big booktubers (like Reagan from Peruseproject, Christine from Polandbananabooks, Sam from Thoughts on Tomes, and you of course!) that I'll watch to get recommendations from because their videos helped form my reading tastes. Watching those channels and watching their TBRs and wrap-ups really helped skyrocket my love of reading and I still watch all of them four years later. Absolutely love your channel!

But I enjoy the videos I am making and have met some really great people here which is why I continue to make content. I really liked all your thoughtful answers in this video. I 100 percent agree with all of the things you said. I was watching another one of these tags and I think it was Ali (hardbackhorder) who said, you wouldn't expect a makeup guru to no do makeup tutorials, and hauls and things related to makeup, why would expect a booktuber to not do book hauls, reviews, TBRs, and wrapups. That is the basis of the booktube foundation. I really liked that because I have seen other booktubers not want to do those things because "I am not like other booktubers" What does that even mean? Also as far as the drama and tea, I stay out of that nonsense. I am an older booktuber and I just think, wanting to get involved in that mess is a young person game.

I’m not a part of any community as a creator (hoping to start soon 🤞🏼) but as a viewer I really like that booktubers leave their audience out of the drama. It gets a little annoying in other communities (beauty, vlogging, lifestyle) when there’s drama and controversy every other day, it takes the enjoyment out of videos.
