  • When it comes to Education for women The Edinburgh 7 were pioneers in Scottish history and the cause of the Surgeon's Hall Riots. Scottish history tour guide, Bruce Fummey tells this story of women in Scottish history. Led by Sophia Jex-Blake seven intelligent, determined ladies fought for the education rights of women and made Edinburgh University the first university in the UK to accept women.
However the story didn't end there. The Edinburgh seven had more hurdles to face than just getting in to university. The Surgeon's Hall Riot was only one of them.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Wonderful story! My niece works in Medical Research in a Sydney University, I must share this story with her! Also, my grandmother from a small isolated mining town, was awarded a MSc in 1908 in Tasmania at 21, and an offer to study at the Sorbonne! Neither would have been possible without these women! Hooray to the Scotswomen! 👍👏

As a woman holding a Masters Degree in Science, this video got me a bit emotional. I loved your final comments about that Dr that prevented their graduation and the happy ending for the women involved. ❤

Another wee snippet of wumin in medicine. Dr Elizabeth Blackwell born 1821 Bristol, knocked back from medical schools 29 times. Finally accepted to a NY college and graduate tops in her class. An activist in many things. Died 1910 and is buried in the graveyard at the Historic Kilmun church. Thank you once agin for your interesting history lesson.

Very nice. I’m reminded that married women in Texas ha no standing before state courts. If they wanted to file a suit for anything, they had to have a male family member or their husband file on their behalf. This went on until 1977. Hats off to Louise B. Raggio. She fought the law and the law lost.

Yes, women cause riots! The Edinburgh 7. Love that Edinburgh was the first to let Women in, although inability to follow through in letting them graduate was very upsetting ( TV and phone survived). Thanks so much Bruce for sharing the story. I used to live 2 minutes walk from Surgeons Hall and my Masters is from University of Edinburgh. Graduated with both degrees from McEwan Hall. Great walk down memory lane as well as learning about the Edinburgh 7.

Have seen enough that I predict that these videos will become the highest praised on UTube. Your stories and presentations far exceed any others I have seen. Rock on.

Thank you for humanizing the subjects of the topic. So often women in these situations are mythologised as some kind of higher being untouched by the barrage of stupid around them, but you took a moment to really encourage empathy with them. ❤️

This should have way more likes than it does. What an epic story! It should be made into a movie or series, but Bruce must direct and help write.

Wow thanks for the reminder of this story! I had beeb told it while living in Edinburgh, but had forgotten

  • @frankhancock2881

Its sad that these ladies went through all that hell and still couldn't graduate in Scotland. They were definitely pioneers in education and in women's rights

Hard to believe what women had to go through back in the day. Another great tale told with your legendary sense of humour! But, as an Aberdeen fan, I resemble that remark about the sheep... 🤪😂
