Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I like the story of how Bell taught his medical students to be observant. He put some dilute nitric acid n a dish then dipped his index finger in it and then put it in his mouth without seeming to have any effect. He would then have the students do the same. they of course found their acid dipped fingers to be bitter and sour and he then explained that they hadn't watched improperly awhile he had dipped his index finger in the acid he put a different finger in his mouth.
That story was famously bastardised into the medical examiner who inserted his finger in the arse of a corpse and then licked it stating that you have to be both observant and comfortable with a dead cadaver. Got his students to do the same then told them if you had been observant you would have noticed that I put my index finger up the bottom and licked my ring finger (no pun intended).

This is fascinating. My father turned me on to Holmes via Basil Rathbone. Love your channel so much. My bucket list starts with a trip to Scotland.
Have read all the Holmes stories, several Doyle biographies and have loads of books on the various radio, tv, stage and film adaptions. Could say I am a bit of a Sherlock nut. I still really enjoyed this video too. Great presentation, I could listen to you for hours and hours.

@@ScotlandHistoryTours If you do and can afford the beer I'll tell you a story about the three Man/Mann brothers John, Daniel & Patrick who fought for young 'Charlie' in at least one of his two last battles, and who were sent to (Boston) America as (7-year) indentured servants (slaves) for that crime in 1652 and for their trouble. Only one, 'John, so far as I yet know avoided/survived the hell-hole mines and went on to some worldly success with 2 sons marrying into well established NY Dutch families & who had grandsons fighting the French on the high seas as privateers while the next generation gave their all in the struggle against the terribly 'revolting' Americans. They were just one level below the famous - the kind that bleed and die . . . but that's another story from a 'Loyalist' who'se immediate ancestors served in the Royal Canadian Black Watch in WWI & WWII . You will note the Yanks had no such a 'transvite' unit and as far as I know no desire to have one. What a 'evolting' thought if you ponder on it . . . and understand it's the very best way to show off a good set of hairy legs.
Come to Canada . . . you'll be treated well. I live near Campbellton, NB, once populated by Isle of Aaran folks whose ancestors were worth less than sheep . . . as some try to claim but who actualy got a very good deal.

I didn't have a clue and now have to read an Arthur Conan Doyle biography. While in the service I read all of the original Sherlock Holmes stories and enjoyed the modified cases in SHERLOCK. Never thought to look into the true origins. The game is afoot!

Many years ago I was installing a computer system at Stoneyhurst College and the bursar took me round the college. He showed me a pew and carved in it was the name Arthur Doyle.

I knew that when I was twelve back in 1972. Even TimeLife books knew it.
I always knew where Conan Doyle lived (my grannies hoose was across the street in Picardi Place, before they knocked the street down to build that kinetic sculpture thingy, but that's another story) but have never heard the story of how Sherlock Holmes actually came about. Thanks Bruce I now have the complete story.

I listened to a podcast series on the Ripper murders a few weeks ago and towards the end they went over the three suspects that the police were serious about and others who had been suspected at various times and now I really wish we could know which one of them (or someone else!) Dr. Bell thought was guilty. I don't think people really want the mystery solved at this point. They enjoy the mystery itself too much to really want the answer.

Suspect the ripper has remained a mystery because they knew who he was, but it was too politically sensitive to reveal the truth. Rather than keeping a mystery going.
Although, equally, as it was only low class alcoholic prostitutes being murdered, so no one worth bothering about, what did it matter? It served to keep the low classes in fear, and under control.
Don't want the revolting peasants revolting again eh. And if they are living in fear, it keeps them occupied

Having the name Holmes as my surname I've been plagued with sherlock references and jokes my entire life in which many times I've had to explain that he was a fictional character who just happens to share my surname.

Let me tell you a story - Arthur Conan Doyle was married in the church at Thornton in Lonsdale, a few miles from where I was born and raised, because his mother had moved to live in the parish. When he travelled to visit her he would take the train to Ingleton where the station had a plaque to commemorate Randal Hopley Sherlock, brother of the parish priest, who was killed by lightning on the station platform. From there he would walk to his mother's home in Masongill, passing Holme mill on the way. Coincidence? Or was Sherlock Holmes a Yorkshireman?
