Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Hi Bruce, I purchased a ticket to your show in Melbourne - keen to see it!
History is Fake and you know it is.
PS: One 3Y3 Symbolism Mockery in Thumbnail is noted.
Great video as always.
In terms of saving lives and contributions to health worldwide, Alexander Fleming is for me the greatest Scottish person in history (I'm a nurse)..
I know the mid-20th century is recent for a historian, but maybe you could consider a documentary about him?
This is why I love the work that you do. So that we may learn, remember and honour the unsung heroes that came before, and make us proud to be Scottish.
Amazing story about an amazing man! Thank you for shining a light on a Scotsman whose life a majority of us would never have known about without you. His crossed the borders, oceans, and mountains, every footstep inspiring all who his words and ideas could reach. Thank you Bruce for another fantastic video!
Glad to help😁
We learned about Thomas Muir at school in the 1970s, in the old Scottish O Grade History. The unit was called something like 'Scotland in the Age of Enlightenment'. ' Thomas Muir and the Radicals' springs to mind. The 18th century threw up remarkable ideas and individuals in the home countries and in Europe. All credit to Bruce for bringing Muir the popular media, but if half of you guys had paid attention at school you would have heard of Muir already! And it's no excuse being young! Lot's of historians have covered this ground so no big secret really to anyone who is even slightly curious about this formative era of Scottish and British history. A contemporary described Edinburgh of the time as 'hotbed of genius'. If I recall correctly it slipped from the school History curriculum sometime during the so-called Curriculum for Excellence ( so loved of SNP wallahs, ironically). I argued for it's retention as I was a small cog in that process, but I was out-gunned by competing priorities. There is so much history and not enough time to learn it.
Another great episode. Makes me proud to be of Scottish ancestry. And as you pointed out in your tale of the last beheading in Britain, many hard won victories for the Common Man,are being repealed by our elected officials. Rights once thought God given, are now considered too dangerous for common folk.
Never forget Thomas Muir, never forget his successors like John Maclean.
Agreed
Almost forgotten
I’m surprised they haven’t made a movie about this man
Exactly
I thought of a series. Too much story here for a movie. !
What a story! 🎶😎🎶 What a persevering hero!!
This is a brilliant channel, you’re so honest and passionate about our countries history….the good & bad 🏴
Vraiment un homme extraordinaire!
What a life these guys lived. Great video Bruce.
Thanks, Bruce! Always appreciate how you bring the past forward and connect its lessons to our lives today.
Thank you so much
Thank you for sharing this with us Bruce. There’s a bust of him with the cloth draped over his injury posted online. He was a noble man indeed. Gone too soon. Imagine how much more he could have accomplished.🏴❤️
Fascinating story. Thank you. ❤
Very interesting. I am familiar with the United Irishmen, but did not know they had equivalent societies in Scotland or England. Definitely learned something new, thanks, Bruce.
Absolutely beautiful story Bruce and beautifully told. I really appreciate you mate and I really do mean that.👊
Ah thanks
I live near hunters hill house, it was bought by a private investor about ten years ago who then proceeded to tear half of it down, it now lies half derelict and open to the elements. It really is tragic.
Heart-breaking. We went there to take footage to use, but the place had been left to ruin so much we didn't use it
Wonder who bought it? Bet it wasn’t an Anglo
That needs local council intervention by the sound of it. An absolute disgrace.
@@NaNa-wj8tw I think the Thomas muir society tried to intervene, to no avail
@@ScotlandHistoryTours the owner was hoping to knock it down and build a care home, when he got knocked back he was made aware only the original building was protected and he was able to tear down the 18th and 19 th century extensions. I’m surprised it hasn’t mysteriously went on fire like so many historic buildings in and around Glasgow.
Great story born and brought up in Bishopbriggs and went to thomas muir high which is unfortunately now no more
I was looking for someone who would mention that ... the Primary School is still named after him though.
Hi Bruce. Great presentation. Pity that this film was so short when there was so much controversy regarding Thomas Muir of Huntershill. I have been a fan of his since I first heard the song written by Adam McNaughton. His trial is still seen as as one of the greatest farces in Scottish legal history. Just one more thing to mention I was astonished to learn that when he was found guilty that he was granted 'Gentleman's' status. He was given the top flat of the Tollbooth and a servant to prepare his meals. He also had unlimited visitors with virtually unrestricted access ( it is suggested that one of his visitors gifted him a loaded pistol). He was held there for almost a year whilst awaiting transportation. Whilst being transported he had his own cabin and dined with the ships officers. It was also reported that he was allowed ashore in Rio where the ship collected supplies. Very interesting story although not quite sure if we will ever know the full truth.
To be honest the video was already longer than the 10-15min I like them to be. There's just too much to pack in
Bruce I’m willing to lay on security/protection when you have to do the Greenock gig.😂
Just buy tickets, that'll be enough😁
@@ScotlandHistoryTours
oh I’ll be there mate don’t you worry about that. The Beacon where you’re gig is is less than 5 minutes walk from my house. Which is convenient as I’m to old and fat to walk much further than that.
All my youth footballing days were spent playing football at Bishopbriggs and Huntershill. Always knew of Thomas Muir and thought he was another Colonial Brit oppressor until about 20yrs ago I came across a leaflet near his family's former home and decided to find out more about him as he was more for the common man than I first thought,
Amazing man telling an amazing story about an amazing man! Thanks.
You're too kind
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Not attempting to be kind, just being truthful.
Excellent, its the untold stories that inform
Hey Bruce. I just did my genealogy. I never knew my father. So it was pretty fulfilling for me, and quite fascinating to solve the mystery, albeit somewhat difficult. Turn out my dad is very Scottish. Cummings and Nix(McNickolls), The Nix line was traced to the Gibson's and I guess Robert the Bruce is my 24th great grandfather. Stewarts on paternal side, and maternal side through the Ervin name, and Russell. The Cummings line is related to the McLeod's and Stewarts too. It was crazy to see so many Scottish names. Dalmahoy was a big one I still can't find a lot of data on.. anywho.. what a rabbit hole this has been. Thanks for the uploads my guy.
Tremendous video Bruce! Well done, as always! I knew of Thomas Muir but you filled in so many of the blanks in my knowledge that I looked into it a little further just now.
I noticed that he was the man at the top of the monument's list of men. Usually, that means that the remains are undocumented or not recovered, yet his death in Chantilly is well known. Found out that they're not sure where or if he was buried! He died a hero of France but he was not Catholic, so the Catholic graveyard of the town would not allow him to be buried there. Perhaps a good thing, as the old graveyard is now a parking lot! Still, that means that Muir's final resting place is not known as far as I can tell. Our fierce warrior for the rights of the people was perhaps purposely obscured, even by France, so peace for the living could carry on. (At least until Napoleon!) I will remember Thomas Muir in my heart for that reason alone. I find it fascinating that my Scottish father imparted the same political ideas In my head from a young age, so his ideas remain open in the minds of many peoples. Perhaps that is his true legacy.
WTHank you for teaching us about this great man.
You're welcome
Bravo! Great tale!
Can be titled “Bruce and the Beanstalk for Common Men”!
And women? Not yet!!
Thanks!!
Thanks! Love the history lesson!
Huge thanks Monica
Love your content. Keep up the good work.
Great video, well presented.A recommended book about the story of Thomas Muir is The Liberty Tree by Murray Armstrong.
I herd of Thomas Muir back in 1970 Just before i joined a Highland Regiment, from a old soldier in my local Pub The Riccarton Arms in Currie Jimmy Henderson was his name and he served with the Cameronian during the War . Bruce when i watch this Video it reminded me of him his story of Thomas Muir.
Thanks for another great video, Bruce. What an insane life!
I know, right
Oh my goodness! Could you possibly pack more into one video, while never losing sight of your topic? Dude, I often have to watch your videos 2 or 3 times to take it all in! Great job!
Twice helps the algorithm 😜
How come people from GB are so great story tellers? They have the best documentary presenters ever. OP is great!
He's from Scotland.
@@thevis5465 Yes he is.
@@kristofferhellstrom saying he's from GB is like saying a Portuguese man is from Iberia. It is oddly unspecific and in the case of the Isles it shows a clear political bias.
Can't say I'm surprised you're a swede. I'm in Sweden right now and I'm aware many of you consider Sami to be Swedish.
@@thevis5465 Mmm they are.
Another compelling story well told. Thank you for introducing me to Thomas Muir. It shows that courage and heroism exist far beyond the battlefield.
I know, right
Well done Bruce! A fine tale about a great revolutionary! Who could ask for more... A happy ending perhaps? We don't need that this is history not fantasy!
I love this man.
This was one of your best stories ever. I learned so much, thank you. I can't imagine traveling the distance he did across land and sea. Mr. Muir was a man of conviction if ever there was one.
Aye, quite a life
I actually did know about our man Muir! But do you know about one of his francophile scots contemporaries? Quintin Craufurd was a banker from Kilwinning and owner the palace of Matignon (now the PM's residence) in Paris during the revolution. He and his italian mistress, another interesting character, helped organise the flight of the french king from Paris and thus indirectly led to his execution and the birth of the republic!
Another wonderful story Bruce 🎉
An amazing silent hero I'm proud now to know his story 🏴
You Sir , are a great story teller !!! Love your videos ! Have a great week ahead !
Thank you
You are an awesome man Bruce! Amazing, stunning, and factual presentations. Proof, you are truly the "Real McCoy". Thank you for your contributions o Scottish history. V/r
😜
This was such a pleasure to watch. The accent this man speaks with makes everything he says more interesting to my American ear 😊 Thanks for a great history lesson on a man I had never heard of.
My pleasure
An amazing story as always ❤
Thanks
Your pictures of each story is wicked good
I need to find out about this man. Good video Bruce.❤
Great stuff. Keep it up!
Great video. Thank you

Did not know this, Love This, Thank You!!☘
Awsome as always. Thank you.
Thank you.
The best narrative on untold History. Thank you again.
You're welcome Stephen
Wow. That's quite a story. Thank you.
Thanks Sir, an interesting historical tally.
Thank you for sharing this gem with us all...😊..E
I have indeed heard of Thomas Muir of Huntershill and read a little about him. Thank you, Bruce for telling his story
I'm a student of Thomas Payne, and so have a passing familiarity with Thomas Muir. What I wouldn't give to be a wee mouse, eavesdropping on the conversations between the two men.
What would Muir have accomplished if his life hadn't ended so abruptly. No one can say for sure, but I'd like to think that power being returned to the people, would have happened far sooner, and much more completely.
Glad to hear much more about Thomas Muir Bruce. He and Payne left a lasting impact on the Western Civilization far too few fully understand.
Very interesting. I had never heard of this man before.
A'reyt Bruce. Cracking tale. Amazing backdrop.
I have a picture of aircraft carrier HMS Venerable there, when my dad arrived on it. It was later known as ARA Veinticinco de Mayo in Argentine service in the Falklands conflict. Different things to different people in different times somehow seems appropriate?
And thank you for the education.
You're welcome
Brilliant story …again.
Great informative programme.
Thanks
As always well done. 👍🎅🏻
Thanks
Thanku for recognising Thomas Muir so … wondering if he was survived by children?
That freedom gene runs strong 🙏🏼🏴♥️
outstanding... well done sir...keep it up

As soon as you said Bishopbriggs I know you were talking about Thomas Muir.
I missed your show in Giffnock last October through illness but I'll try for EK next year.
Ah no
Looking good B!
Aye the pounds have piled on this trip
Nice one.
Thanks!
those are some real pretty roses!! I always love the purple or "blue" varieties. "our heroes were lucky" aye well said, man. The moment you said "convict ships" a chill I knew was there ran thru me again.
"sailor jailers" run Muir!! Run lad!!
Mornin Bruce! It's just about 5:45 AM here in the States, a bit cold and damp so far.
The sun will shine brightly before the day's out
Judging by the TV news, the weather has been trying to murder Americans so cold and damp is probably a good day.
Another great video Bruce! Just got one correction: The struggle IS international Comrade, it still is.
Aye
Scotland's greatest hero is yet to come. Look around you.
Coming to Motherwell on 27th of October. Hopefully I'll see you there.
I'll definitely be there😎

It's amazing that the only two people I know named Muir made it all the way from Scotland to California. Is there any chance they were related at all?
@@dannetterousseau4095 A quick look tells me probably not...maybe. Lol. Nothing mentioned in either ones bio. It sure was nice here.....until the politicians did their thing.
Bruce you sing well!

V good
Hey.....
Would you consider making a vlog about the Hunter Brothers from East Kilbride?
I'll need to research
You should do shows in the United States. I was hanging on every word in this video. I have never heard this story.
Delighted you enjoyed it
Also I hope you are enjoying Australia as much as I can by proxy 🎉🎉🎉😊
Nearly finished
To us Yessers and lefties, Thomas Muir is a hero and an icon. In our esteem, he's up there with red clydesiders or the radical insurrectionists of 1820. I'm proud to be from Paisley, home of artisans whose radical politics is a golden thread through our towns long history. The folks here remember Thomas Muir very well. Not just Yessers and loony lefties like me. All activists I've met, from the peace movement, the environmental activists, LGBT fighters, down to the lowliest keyboard warrior rage typing on comments sections, all know the name Thomas Muir as surely as we know Che Guevara. Thank you for this video. Please do one about either the Red Clyde or the 1820 radicals. Peace or a Desert!!!
Hey fella, I was at you fabby pre show( wife spoke to you about the burns invite to no 10) when you click the motherwell link you get took to a page for Perth shows.
Aye, thanks. That was the case, but we fixed it last week. Good work soldier. Stay alert.
Love the video. I hadn't head of Muir but he reminds me of my great hero - Tom Paine. Paine was a sworn enemy of the corrupt, brutal Hanoverian regime in Britain and was himself tried (in absentia) for sedition and sentenced to death. He got away to France, though and was elected to the National Convention, helping to draft the first republican constitution. Like Muir, Paine opposed the execution of the king and narrowly escaped the guillotine himself by a misplaced chalk mark on his cell door and the fall of Robespierre. I'm glad that Muir and Paine met. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall.

Does anyone know if Bruce is still doing the tour guide gig? I'd much prefer having a bit more autonomy and utilizing his services than the tighter schedule of a mapped out/every moment planned tour...he's wonderful..🙂
