There’s a lot of noise these days, a lot of drama, things we can get pulled into: worry, offense, doubt, jealousy. That may be around us, but it doesn’t have to get in us. Pay attention to what you’re allowing in your spirit. Just because there’s strife, division, that doesn’t mean it has to get in you. Stay on the high road. Don’t take that bait. Maybe at work, you could be frustrated: there’s politics, people aren’t treating your right. It’s easy to let that sour your day, so you come home negative. No, clear out that clutter. Your time is too valuable to live it offended, upset. Life is flying by. We can never get this day back. Live it in peace; live it in faith.
Thanks for reading this comment, I hope you are blessed and uplifted by it. We are a new and growing channel, your support and blessings is much appreciated. Thanks and God bless you. Amen

Girard's Mimetic Theory is essentially 3 hypotheses:
    1) *Desire is mimetic* , mediated by others, induced by their "prestige" and our "ontological lack" or in Kierkegaard's language, "Angst"; the human being is the most mimetic of all the animals.
    2) Mimetic desire, though fundamentally good, leads to rivalry in our fallen transcendence; to vengeance, vendetta, and finally, apocalyptic crisis, which at the foundation of our species, was resolved through the spontaneous catharsis of the *scapegoat mechanism* , a crowd lynching an individual blamed for all the sins, whose death restores peace through "unanimity minus one" ; out of this 'miracle' comes the first categories, "good" and "bad", the victim is divinised as the first 'god', sacrificial culture appears (myth, ritual, prohibition), it is the origin of consciousness, symbols and language, rationality. All myth essentially hides this mechanism from view, impugning the victim, exculpating the crowd.
    3) *The Bible is a technology that, with Christ as the apotheosis, fully reveals the scapegoat mechanism* and the word/desire of the true God, which is mercy, rather than sacrifice. It also reveals the nature of human culture as *satanic* and why Satan, "the Accuser", is the prince and principle of our world of division, accusation and expulsion.

Fascinating discussion. I did, of course, order the book. But in thinking of mimetic desire I thought of Jesus: "I always do what I see the Father doing." Whether one thinks of this as inner-Trinity or Jesus qua human still fixing his eyes on the Father, one has mimetic desire shaped by the Father and that, of course, is love, since love is not only what the Father (and the Son and Holy Spirit) is, but also what he desires and does.

This was a great conversation. Bishop Barron is one of my intellectual go to’s especially in things spiritual but there were instances in this conversation that his usage of “Girardian” seems to be inappropriate or imprecise at the least. I remember feeling cringy with his awkward usage at least 3 times - especially when he described Caiphas as "perfect Girardian." The remark made me feel that Girard was in the league of Freud or Kant who promoted some debatable frameworks, which the rest of the conversation clearly showed he wasn't. Maybe a clarification for precision is in order 😊 But on the whole the conversation with Luke Burgis was great and this book is now one of my favorites, and Rene Girard a new favorite academic. 🎉

I hasten to add that there is something within us that is eager to claim we are the victim--even when, perhaps especially when our suffering is slightest. Meanwhile, we will deny victimhood to the truly aggrieved. What 's that about? Even the church, rightly loves to celebrate the martyred, but is sluggish to seek forgiveness and restoration for those the church has been the cause of their suffering.

Thank you so so much! This conversation helped me see how the memetic process influenced my entry into the noviciate and how the painful undoing of my desire to become a priest was, in fact, a grace. I am imagining there could be some wisdom in unraveling the mimetic voices of « desire » to become a priest as part of the discernment required in vocation « training ». In my case, my spiritual director became a priest out of a response to his own frenzy of mimetic voices. Hence, it became clear to me how his direction twisted my own twisted clog of mimetic frenzy.

Regarding "theories of everything" vis-à-vis Girardianism would be the understanding of the Atonement. i.e. What did the Cross of Jesus actually do for us? Many Girardians (not necessary Girard himself) have views of the Atonement in contradiction to more traditional understandings (such as those of St. Anselm). I believe harmonizing (to the degree possible) these views would be a major theological undertaking and avenue for inquiry.

I like hearing about how Jesus is the way out of the scapegoating mechanism. If Newton's first law of physics and motion explains why disordered behavior persists, why sin remains even after the death of Christ, then we understand the best predictor of the future is the past. Yet, the unraveling of the first effects of original sin has been set in motion since the birth of Jesus which shows that Satan is powerless where The Virgin Mary is present. The outcome is fixed since the crucifixion and death of Christ Jesus. Even though it might appear that humanity is stationary, there is virtual perpetual motion such that objects are always in a new place even if their position has remained the same.
When Jesus Christ fulfilled the will of God, The Father, salvation in a new event horizon opened to humanity.
When averting His eyes as Jesus did from the accusers, God communicates that He is looking away which is a path towards forgiveness. Rather than overlooking which perpetuates sinful behaviors, by looking away, first there is a recognition of something from which one averts one's gaze. In the words of Our Lord's Prayer, "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us," we learn about the path of forgiveness which is to forgive others.
When the accusers realized that they are each in need of forgiveness, they first disbanded, abandoning their cause, and then the power of scapegoating dissipated and they left, oldest to youngest, separately, one by one. Then, the One who was without sin foregoes condemning the woman, forgives, and instructs her to go and avoid sin.
Forgiveness is a greater act than healing, even miraculously, because it involves the spiritual which extends beyond the physical, in the words of Fr. Timothy Peters, when speaking about the hemorrhaging woman June 29, 2022 at Christ Cathedral in Orange County, CA.

Okay, that was an interesting talk. But, the responses for what we as a Church, as individuals, as communities, etc can do came a little short for practical application. Practical applications conducive to positive outcomes, anyways.
What would be more applicable then the vague answers given- basically, 'give it to Grace to fix'- is taking the bundle of what you guys discussed and then applying it to real life circumstances.
To cut to the quick answer, ppl have to start learning how to do effective problem solving.
To explain: all scapegoats are burdened with the problems, sins, dysfunctions, shames, and undesirable qualities, traits, and characteristics of the given group. This is why they tend to even act like the "black sheep", so to speak, they are acting out the burdens laid upon them (think Dramaturgy for clarity and visualization purposes). When a group begins "pointing fingers" to identify the scapegoat, redirect them to the heart of the problem instead and ask the engaged to come up with effective solutions that resolve the problem and that also help the inter/intradynamic system function better.
The more ppl learn to do this the less backstabbing and petty rivalries come into focus while opening the doorway to a more cohesive group that resolves itself to a higher call; solution-centric dynamics and healthy social engagement behaviors.
Every problem found in/with one person in a group is a queue to look for a systematic issue, problem, and/or the opportunity to solve a systematic error that's laid itself on the shoulders of the given scapegoat.

@@marypinakat8594Do you wake up snide or is acquired throughout the morning?
I'll put what I said another way--just for you, social science theories tend to stay locked behind inaccessible doors because they are based off of observed behaviors, if new behaviors do not arise for the social scientist to observe there's nothing there for them to further observe and ponder upon. Behavioral theorists and personality development theorists tend to use psychological theories rather than social science theories to create models by which to work.
So, what I suggested above takes what is not normally used and explained how to use it in practical applications; in real life situations. I did this with a fundamental grounding that extends from Family Sytems Theory.
Why did I do this? Well, I did it so that they could have a more developed answer to the question, 'How do we apply this theory to real life situations?', than the one they gave.
Further, I gave them this more developed answer knowing that it works because after I created a program based off of it I applied it to in field work and found a great deal of success with the different demographics I've used it with. So, not only is it a good suggestion but it is also a very functional suggestion.
So, now, next time you go and decide to be obnoxiously rude go ahead and think twice first; put the idea back onto the tip of the ugly stick you grabbed it from, sit on it, and spin for a good while.

Refering to the segment at around 25:00, rating systems (e.g., Michelin stars in this case) or competition have a tradeoff. In one end you don't have rating system or competition and people could not care about having a good product/service and many people suffer. On the other hand the rating system/competition is taken to the extreme and competitors suffer and maybe the quality could be hurt if the rating system does not really reflect what benefits the customer. It is a complex issue.

We need to emphasize on education for pregnancy prevention because of the rapid growing overpopulation.
Of all the environmental problems our planet is facing today, overpopulation is the one that sometimes slips from the radar. Overpopulation places a great demand on resources and land, which may be the reason for widespread environmental issues in addition to impacting global economies and standards of living.
Poverty is to be believed as the major cause of overpopulation. High mortality rate and lack of educational resources, leads to high birth rates, resulting in a large population.
The effects of the overpopulation are quite severe. One of these is the lack of natural resources. Earth has the capacity to only produce a limited amount of food and water, falling short of current needs of the people which are increasing day by day.
Rapid population growth makes the choice between high consumption and investment needed to bring more consumption in the future more scarce. Economic development depends on investment. Therefore, rapid population growth repels the investment needed for higher future consumption.
With a rapidly growing population, the adjustment becomes difficult to manage with economic and social change. Fast urbanization creates problems like housing, electricity, water, transport etc. In addition, the growing population is at risk of permanent environmental damage through urbanization in some rural areas.
The rapidly growing population transforms the economy into mass unemployment and low employment. As the population increases, the ratio of workers to the total population increases. The result is that with an increase in the labour force, unemployment and low employment increases. Rapid increment of the population reduces savings and investment.
Domestic consumption of exportable goods also increases with rapid population growth. As a result, there is a decline in the exportable surplus. On the other hand just to meet the demand of the rapidly growing population, more food and other consumer goods are needed so that demand can be fulfilled.
Rapid growth has led to uncontrolled urbanization, which has produced overcrowding, destitution, crime, pollution, and political turmoil. Rapid growth has outstripped increases in food production, and population pressure has led to the overuse of arable land and its destruction. Over population is pushing us to eat and breath plastic particles because the overuse of plastic and harmful chemicals is everywhere.

PRAYER TO MARY, QUEEN OF THE ANGELS
[ August Queen of Heaven Prayer ]
    An Indulgence of 500 days.
    (S. C. Ind., July 8, 1908; S. P. Ap., Mar. 28, 1935)
August Queen of Heaven and Mistress of the Angels, thou who hast received from God the power and the mission to crush the head of Satan: we humbly ask thee to send to us thy heavenly legions so that, under thy command, they may pursue the demons let loose upon the earth, fight them everywhere, vanquish their audacity, and drive them back into the abyss.
    “Who is like unto God?”
O good and tender Mother, thou shalt ever be our love and our hope.
O divine Mother, send the Holy Angels to defend us [me] and repel far from us [me] the cruel enemy.
Holy Angels and Archangels, defend and keep us. Amen.
    THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PRAYER
    [Please Read]
The faithful are asked to say this prayer frequently and fervently. It is of great importance given the following remarkable background:
[1] The prayer was dictated by the Blessed Mother herself to the holy and venerable priest, Fr. Louis-Édouard Cestac, on January 13, 1863 as a means to combat the powers of Hell.
[2] An exorcism prayer in itself, this is a formidable prayer for “spiritual battle” especially needed for our times when the ravages caused by the fallen angels are everywhere conspicuous and unrelenting.
[3] It is a prayer approved by the Church: It was recommended to the faithful by Pope Pius IX, and later indulgenced by both Popes Leo XIII and Pius X.
    Note on this Translation
O Mother of Love, Charity and Mercy, O Mother of Prayer and Stigma, O Mother of Immaculate Conception and Graceful and The Lord is with you and Immanuel, Mary, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we, the Church and France and Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Malta, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Macedonia Croatia and Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania and Hungary and Romania and Moldova and Bulgaria and Greece and UK and United States and Canada and Bahamas and Cuba and Haiti and Dominican Republic and Costa Rica and Mexico and Belize and Honduras and Antigua and Antigua and Barbuda and Brazil and El Salvador and Colombia and Chile and Ecuador and Peru and Venezuela and Argentina and Paraguay and Uruguay and Australia and New Zealand and Nauru and Micronesia and Tuvalu and Fiji and Vanuatu and Kiribati and Samoa and India, Maldives, Bhutan, Indonesia, Brunei, Palau, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar, Laos, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Korea, Nigeria, Algeria, Turkey, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Sudan, Somalia, Tunisia, Yemen, Libya, Egypt, Ethiopia, Bahrain, Congo, Angola, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Central Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Burundi, Namibia, Lesotho, South Sudan, Madagascar, Tanzania, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Benin, Chad, Tunisia, Senegal, Djibouti, Guinea, Eswatini, Gabon, Comoros, Cape Verde, Seychelles, Ivory Coast, Zambia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Let Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Armenia, Liechtenstein, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados, San Marino, Malta, the countries of the European Union, the Vatican City State, and other countries be consecrated.

Bishop Barron expressed my reservation in his before last question : mimesis as the basic cause of wants is obviously an oversimplification. Luke Burgis' very first example paradoxically proves it: a baby's want for milk has no mimetic component. That said, yes desire, envy, coveting, concupiscence... are everywhere but as often as not for respectable non-mimetic reasons, such as findinging food and shelter. Philosophers and spiritual masters have all and in all centuries told us to break away, to free ourselves from superfluities. Nothing new. I find Girard's insights related to scapegoating more interesting (while being clearly skeptic about its connection with mimetic desire) : In his view, the crucifixion of Jesus was the unique example in history of the scapegoating of a totally pure and innocent victim, that of a "lamb" instead of a stinking "goat". Hence its revolutionnary character and the incomparable "city" it gave foundations to.

Too bad God didn't make the desire to do good a little stronger in us. Maybe then we/I would have imitated His desire and the devastatingly evil cesspool that this world is could have turned out different. As it is now this will only happen within the heart of an individual, if they accept the miracle of grace that is.

YOU HAVE TO BE READY TO MEET GOD:
There is only ONE God with three parts, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Humans have three parts, the body, soul and spirit. ONE person three parts.
The Bible says that we are all sinners.
As it is written: There is none righteous no not one. Romans 3:10
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
But we are all as an unclean thing and all our righteousness are as filthy rags. Isaiah 64:6
For the wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23(the word “death” in this verse means eternal separation, from God in hell).
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.Isaiah 1:18
Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that He was buried and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures.1CORINTHIANS 15:3-8
In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:14
For by grace ye are saved, through faith; and not of yourselves
it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-99
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Galatians 2:21
Your trust in Jesus and what He did for you on the cross, is what saves you from hell.
The moment you trust in Jesus and only Jesus, you are saved.
After people get saved they get baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Dear friend, I think you mean one God with three persons. We cannot separate each person from the Godhead which the word "parts" suggests. "Person" suggests different complimentary roles encompassing the reality of mutual eternal love, a creative force which leads to the creation of all things, including ourselves. "For You have created all things, and for Your pleasure they were created, for You are worthy, O Lord." I recognize this may be thought of as quibbling, especially concerning the Trinity, which no human can fully understand, much less effectively communicate. My hope is that this comment may prove helpful. May God bless you, my friend.

Act Of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart Of Jesus
    by Pope Pius XI
Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us, humbly prostrate before Thine altar.
We are Thine and Thine we wish to be; but to be more surely united with Thee, behold each one of us freely consecrates ourselves today to Thy Most Sacred Heart.
Many, indeed, have never known Thee; many, too, despising Thy precepts, have rejected Thee.
Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart.
Be Thou King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken Thee, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned Thee, grant that they may quickly return to their Father’s house, lest they die of wretchedness and hunger.
Be Thou King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof and call them back to the harbour of truth and unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one shepherd.
Be Thou King of all those who even now sit in the shadow of idolatry or Islam, and refuse not Thou to bring them into the light of Thy kingdom. Look, finally, with eyes of pity upon the children of that race, which was for so long a time Thy chosen people; and let Thy Blood, which was once invoked upon them in vengeance, now descend upon them also in a cleansing flood of redemption and eternal life.
Grant, O Lord, to Thy Church, assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give peace and order to all nations, and make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry: Praise to the Divine Heart that wrought our salvation: to it be glory and honour forever.
Kyrie Eleison! Christe Eleison! Kyrie Eleison! Christe Eleison! Kyrie Eleison! Christe Eleison!

Rene Girard has been very piercing. But..however mimetic desire is omnipresent in our social development, a person is capable for the direct desires from the depths of his/her heart. Not every root of action shall be explined by mimetic lenses. There are also several other inate, deep mechanisms which triggers our conflictuos actions. (Eg. narcistic wounds, betryal, revenge). Reducing all sources of desires to the mimetic denominator does not serve to good understanding of Rene Girard work. It is then dismissed as not explanatory to specific examples. (I even found this "Rene Girard is wrong" in the last roman of Michel Houellebecq....)

Yeah you keep hiring these cheesy white theology PhD f Nerds and they teach one of your classes for your organization and you want people to send 200.00 or more money a month to pay for those deauch bags salaries or because you feel like flying to Italy and making a documentary, literally flat out asking to donate hard cash, f off!! I'm sorry but it's the right thing to say. You want to have people donate more money to your Channel become a Scholar in the 1st and 2nd century, learn Hebrew and Greek, give people no reason to doubt Christ's Resurrection, give people a new perspective on this, not because you read a book about Winston Churchill or C.S.Lewis, go to source, Christ
