    Childhood Obesity is a serious epidemic in North America. Nearly a third of our children are overweight or obese,...and the numbers continue to rise.
    At younger and younger ages, Doctors are treating children with significant medical complications related to being obese, such as, Type-2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and elevated Cholesterol.
    We're at risk of raising supersized kids who may live sicker and die younger than the generation before them.
    "Our Supersized Kids" profiles four families whose grade school children are overweight or obese. Each of these families are actively working to help their child turn around an out-of-control weight gain. The documentary highlights their struggles and successes, along with providing helpful tips from Pediatricians.

      I'm interested in other things. How can they eat so much at all? It's 1,5 pound of food and 1500 kcal at one time(!), for example, average adult man need 2700 per day.
      I'm 24, I weigh 220 pounds and have 3 times/week hard trainings in gym but I can not eat so much at one time.

      Evgeniy Litvin Well I used to be about 250+ a couple years ago thank god I lost some of that now I hover at about 180 now. To get to a state of eating 5 sausage mcmuffins for breakfast you need to condition your stomach to eat like that on a daily basis. I used to eat 4 jr. chickens a lrg fries and large drink or like 3 plates of food a the Chinese smorg. I could have eaten more. Now I sometimes get full halfway through the fries and a drink.

If we wanted it, we had to go out and get it ourselves (and of course, especially as younger children we rarely had the money for that). They didn't start buying snacks of that kind until we were in our late teens, and by then we were able to control ourselves and eat responsibly.

    I was overfed as a child, it was an expression of love. Always given second portions. By the age of 10 I assumed and expected 2 adult size portions to be a norm. With no portion size control I was often left home alone and having to feed myself, you can imagine what it led to. And I swear as a kid I did not suspect something was wrong, I honestly didn’t know any better. When my parents would find out how much I’d eaten they’d shame and scold me. So I was bullied at school and shamed at home with no one giving me guidance or taking control. It took a couple of years of therapy once I became a teenager to sort my eating habits out and the mental damage that was done. So no, I do not for even a split second blame these poor children. Parents, please do better!

    Lets see, we don't let kids run around & play outside because we are scared they will get kidnapped. Now we just plop them down in front of the computer to play games & eat snacks.
    Kids that have energy & desperately want & need to run around are now medicated for being hyper. If they do get any exercise we are so paranoid they might get hurt we take all the fun out of physical exertion.
    Oh noooo, their little feelings might get hurt, we can't let them compete. They might fall & skin their knee, we must dress them in armor. We have made physical exercise a task, a task kids dread. We are afraid kids will get a complex if they are "it" in a simple game of tag. No more hide & go seek because someone might get their feelings hurt.
    Now we have made exercise an isolated task. No more games, no more activities where exercise is fun & just a part of the overall activity.
    You can't sit Jr down in front of the TV all day & then expect him to enjoy walking on the treadmill at the gym. Exercise needs to be fun for kids, it needs to be part of an activity they enjoy. Sure, there will be skinned knees, little injuries & the occasional serious injury but, what is better? Arto Kulmala Many parents feed their kids junk because it's cheap & easy. Then they don't let them play games & run around to burn it off. They sit them down in front of the TV or computer because they are paranoid something will happen. Right now, we get fat kids. When these kids grow up they will be fat adults that are afraid of the world their parents protected them from. I am a psychologist & I am already seeing it in young adults. Their entire childhood they were told the world is hostile. Someone will hurt you if you play outside etc etc. They grow up, they have poor face to face social skills & generally view the world as hostile. This situation isn't helping anyone & it's a growing problem (literally) in all developed countries. Britain & Australia isn't far behind the US.
      I live in the Southwest US & our kids still play outside & get some exercise at least. We do have a problem here but it's not as bad as other areas of the US.
      I didn't realize the extent of the problem nationally until we traveled to the NE & I noticed most kids were notably overweight. That is what prompted me to look into it more.
      Health issues aside, I am already seeing psychological issues in these kids that were extremely sheltered & that is in an area where this problem is relatively minor. I fear to think what is happening in areas like New York where these problems are much more pronounced.
      Am I looking at it from an egocentric perspective? Will these kids grow up & be happy with most of their friends being people they never meet in person?
      Yea, health issues are a big deal but I am actually more concerned (simply because that's my field) about social issues resulting from this change in lifestyle. They are linked. You don't let kids play physical & competitive games they gain weight & miss out on psychosocial developmental experiences.
      Anyways, I am just babbling at this point. Good Day.

      Hakeem Karim lol No doubt. My neighbor moved to New Mexico from New York about a year ago. They have 2 daughters and those kids are never outside. The mother told me they (her kids) love the sun & weather in New Mexico but a few years ago her daughter fell & needed 6 stitches so she is now reluctant to let the kids play outside. Seriously?
      When I was a kid 6 stitches was this summers incident. It healed, we soldiered on in the dangerous world of playing outside.
      It's almost funny how paranoid parents are nowadays but it's also tragic so many kids are missing out. They are also developing poor lifestyle habits of sitting around & eating to much.

      flyingvigil you're not considering the fact that it may be emotionally hard to lose weight and that simply eating more fruit and veg will not solve the whole issue, though it may help. Also, lots of parents are unaware that their children are overweight or obese and even though they home cook because they don't know how much to give their children as assume kids will finish eating when they are full, though this tends not to happen. What parents should do is gradually stop buying things like crisps/chips, sweets/candy and processed meals and have way less takeaways or meals out and their kids will naturally follow. Also, they should stop buying fizzy drinks. If their kids want fizzy stuff, give them carbonated water. Easy. In addition, families should add more expertise into their routines. For example, kids go to a fun dance club on weekdays and swimming with parents on Sunday, etc. If parents for some reason can't take children to classes, the kids can do stuff at home or in the garden or the adults can buy a trampoline and each child does 30 mins a day. Parents could get healthy cook books and get the kids involved in cooking to tempt them to eat it and get to know healthy foods so as adults they can cook well themselves. Also, everyone should eat on small plates and not have seconds. If after 20-30 minutes they are still hungry give them a piece of fruit. Maybe have Sunday as a treat day and have a scoop of ice cream with strawberries for dessert and once a month a takeaway or eating out. See, it's not as simple as 'just eat fruit and vegetables'. There is much more to it.
      Obviously, it's the parents choice as to how much they personally weigh, but their children have little control over their own weight so it is the duty of a parent to keep their children at a healthy weight. I hope you see there are several factors to losing weight effectively and safely now.

      I agree! When I was a child in the 70's and 80's, we had lunches to beat the band! We had oil-fried chicken, yeast rolls with real butter pats, and mashed potatoes with gravy at least once per week. However, unlike today, we had 45-60 minutes of recess and we romped and played the entire time-running, climbing, etc.. Maybe one child out of 120 in a grade level then was heavier than he/she should be. Nowadays, thanks to the demand to hold teachers and students accountable to an ever-increasing "bar" of testing, recess periods have shrunk to 10-15 minutes per day. Despite the Auschwitz-sized portions of virtually non-caloric foods that Michelle Obama has shoved down our throats, many children are overweight. Leaving school hungry at the end of the day, many are gorging on candy bars and chips to make up for the dearth of calories they are suffering during the day. I NEVER recall being even the least bit hungry at the end of the school day, yet children today are-and kindergarteners are trashing food left and right that won't fit in their bellies and my fifth grade boys are famished-they all get the same portion-a ridiculous policy.

It’s when they exceed the 1500-2200 calorie per day limit where it becomes an issue. Portioning isn’t an issue if they would stick to limits and those limits on food still have to fit into the reason of not pigging out on shit in those calorie barriers. My parents were way ahead of their time. My brother and I were born in the Sixties. Sugared soft drinks were a treat, not a daily event, and when did get them it was in small portions. Same with potato chips & pretzels. Us kids never had candy bars on hand--we had to buy candy out of our pocket money. We were only allowed unrestricted candy binges at Easter and Hallowe'en. We NEVER, and I mean NEVER, ate at MacDonald's. My mother's pantry was full of ingredients, not processed foods. There were no Hostess cupcakes or Twinkies in our lunch boxes. We never had Pop Tarts or Froot Loops for breakfast. Donuts were a Saturday morning treat. Now, in our middle age, we're both active and athletic. Mom kept control of her weight right up to the end of her life. Dad, at 81, is still swimming competitively. I'm glad the parents in this program have realised their children have a weight problem and are doing something about it. Too many parents of fatties are in denial, probably because they're fatties themselves. I get a laugh out of an idiot cousin of mine, who was raised in an "eat and be merry" branch of our family. She's now the size of a whale, had a gastric bypass that didn't work (she refused to diet & exercise), says that paging through cookbooks is her favourite hobby, and hates me for not being fat.

    I remember when I was 10 I was 4'10" and weighed 115lbs. So I was about 20 to 30lbs overweight. The people who would make the most overweight references? My family. We'd be eating dinner for instance, and whenever I'd comment that I liked a certain food, my older brother would say something like "That's the most fattening thing on the table" or "Oooh carbs" sarcastically. My aunt even laughed at me once when I said I wanted some chicken skin when we had fried chicken one night. I didn't know that was the most fattening part. I didn't know anything about fat, calories, carbs, etc. For instance I thought you could drink all the orange juice you wanted because it was technically a fruit (or came from one). I didn't know it had extra sugar. I didn't even know sugar turned to fat f you didn't burn it off. I didn't have that knowledge, and my family was judging me like I was gonna be overweight the rest of my life. Once I turned 12 I hit puberty and slimmed out. I'm modeling for a Seattle company now. But boy I have some bad memories that still piss me off to this day about my weight and my family making rude remarks.

    I think the biggest part of the problem is the lack of exercise. You could eat as much junk food as you want, but as long as you burn off the calories you're not gonna be overweight or obese. Instead of buying an Xbox, get your kid to play a sport or something active so he/she doesn't sit around all the time.

    • @xantropic_travels6564
      @xantropic_travels6564 Před 10 lety +21

      actually not quite, sure exercise plays a part of the obesity. You should watch "Sugar the bitter truth" and "The men who made us fat". It indicates that Fructose sugars are blocking our livers from receiving the leptin signal (which tells us we're full and not to eat anymore) from working, so we eat and eat and eat, more than we should be, plus it's usually the wrong foods. Plus a calorie is not a calorie. They are not equal. For instance. Say a banana could have 100 calories and a fudge candy bar might only have 50 calories, there's no way that fudge is better than a banana. The healthy food you eat is mostly used by the body as energy and not turned into fat. Whereas sugar is wholly turned into fat and none of it is used by the body to function. Exercise is certainly not the only issue here.

    • @MaxBadstibner
      @MaxBadstibner Před 10 lety +2

      K Mushbeauty I didn't say it was the only issue, but I definitely think that it's the biggest issue. Eat fewer calories than you burn off and you won't gain weight, regardless of where it comes from.

    • @xantropic_travels6564
      @xantropic_travels6564 Před 10 lety +12

      It's not regardless of where it comes from. If you ate 1500 calories of mcdonalds but make sure you burned 2000 calories, then it wouldn't matter...no way is that healthy for your body, so of course it matters what you consume, even more than exercise, food is so important. Not to say that you can't eat junk food and not lose weight, in moderation it's okay.

    I taught for 44 years and while I think high sugar and fat foods are definitely a factor, the elimination of recess from schools has been a major factor as well. In public school high-stakes testing put a lot of pressure on the schools to increase academic time. There were also many ridiculous lawsuits from parents whose children were injured on the playground. While the vast majority of the lawsuits are dismissed, the schools must still pay to defend them. After 33 years in the public schools, I went to a private boys school. Those boys were given the freedom to play and play hard every day and in the 11 years there I could count on one hand the number of boys who were even remotely pudgy and none who were obese. In public school obesity was everywhere and we had to start having a resident school nurse due to the number of Type II diabetics among the student population.

    My friend's son is only 8 and already weighs about 110 pounds. She told me she feels sorry limiting his food he is probably like 49 inches tall. When i went to eat with them her son was upset because she usually buys him two panda express meals. I was like " woah". These people don't know that they are killing their kids with kindness. I rarely take my daughter out to eat. We probably eat out like once or twice a month. My daughter is 6 and at the 95th perecent tile for height. She weighs about 45-47 pounds. But she is as tall as most 9 year olds and very skinny. I have to buy her 7-8 slim. Her dad is morbidly obese and feeds my daughter junk food. Once she went with him for a week, she came back with 9 happy meal toys! I was upset. People don't realize that they are hurting their kids.

    It's so great to see the narrative starting to change as we learn it's not calories in/calories out and genetics/outside factors aside, it's almost all processed foods and sugar.
    In this they talk still talk about the fat in hamburgers. We now know that's not bad for us.

    What if we only ate at home, what we purchased at the supermarket, that didn't come in a package? What would that look like?
    Our shopping cart would have in it fresh chicken, fish, pork, beef. It would have in it raw onions, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, celery, zucchini, corn, green beans, broccoli, sweet potatoes, apples, oranges, grapes, bananas. That would leave out much fat, sugar, sodium and artificial ingredients, and every week the garbage can would be half-full.
    If we have to peel potatoes, slice and fry and wait for them to be done, we would eat them less often. That's the idea. We would not be uttering the words "supersize it".
    If instead of opening up a frozen burrito package and pop it in the microwave, if we made a sandwich instead, we would have to bring out sliced bread, mustard, mayo, layer in the lunchmeat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, put everything away and then finally eat it. Our eating experience would be quite different!!

    My kids were raised by having to earn TV, gaming, and computer time, but with a limit on certain days and time limitations per choice. My husband and I, also got them active outside, as much as possible. I didn't give them regular plates for meals, they used meal trays (like the school trays), and we played a game during mealtimes, called the rainbow plate, where we would try to have all the colors of the rainbow, and they would call out all the colors they could find in they're meals...it made mealtimes fun and healthy. Treats were never with held, just rules of no more than 1 serving a day, and sodas no more than 1 time a week or sometimes an extra during parties or holidays. I never had a problem with them sneaking or getting upset about it. I believe that if you start with rules in place for everyone, right at the beginning, they will treat it as a normal life, and when they grow up, they will have learned to be healthy adults. It's working out for my oldest, moved out of state, working, and still living a much healthier lives then others the same age. Each of my children still follow this lifestyle, as we have shown them, to live this way, since they were born.
    You don't have to be rich, just look for healthier options of food, and stay committed to providing you're family a healthy lifestyle. ((NEVER GIVE IN, OR GIVE UP!!))
    PLEASE PARENTS, IT'S ALL YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, FOR HOW YOU RAISE YOUR OWN CHILDREN, INTO ADULTS!!! ♡

    Great in depth documentary with a shout out for all the programs that are available to help people turn their health boat around. The health and fitness of our three kids under 9 became priority one for us as soon as the first one was born. It has been so much fun entering into the hidden world of lean and nutritious foods and seeing how good it is going for them. It feels at times like we are dodging missiles from all directions and as a family we are a commando unit making it across the many mine fields out there when it comes to lifestyles. Living for today and eating for tomorrow has worked out so far for us all. The best has been that I have to stay fit to stay up to their energy levels and jump into all the sports we do every day.

Food became my enemy i started starving my self , my weight decreased dramatically , as a teenager i suffered from both anorexia and bulimia which was one of the worst things happened in my life , now with 22 years old i'm still recovering, the goal is being healthy and okay with yourself . I'll admit that I don't have the healthiest diet in the world, but at least I'm exercising. I go to the gym with my parents and I ride horseback (there's actually a decent amount of exercise that comes with being in the saddle, although I wouldn't say it contributes too greatly to weight loss). If it's nice outside, I go for evening walks with my mom, or if it's not, sometimes we'll go walk around a store for half an hour. It does a world of good.

The poor kid's feet were so fat and swollen that I kno there is no way that it's gonna walk anytime soon. Even moving around in the stroller The baby was grunting. The mother looked really obese too so I guess if you can't tell you fat how are you gonna kno if your kids are fat too. smh
