I was 5 mins into the program & seeing Teagan at 5 yrs old out breath to the door was so sad. Her Mother who's very slim yet aware her daughter is double her size for her age dismisses it. She doesn't put herself in her daughter's shoes at school 6 hours a day with cruel kids. Teagan's self esteem & health should be the priority here. Do your job.

Exactly I'm right there with you I've made almost every meal that my kid has had their whole life every once in awhile we eat out but it's a nice rare treat. I made their baby food and I've never made them separate food they always just eat what we're eating and that's honestly the way people should do it not giving chicken nuggets and junk because then they get accustomed to that and then it's a lose lose battle from there

Exactly, and "snack" portions have been getting bigger and bigger. I was watching a documentary on obesity and people used to get like 6 ounces of soda and a very small bag of popcorn at the movie theater, but now some of the larger sodas are 32 ounces, and the popcorn bins are so big, I could use an empty one to give my dog a bath! Fast food too. . . burgers are bigger, fries are more, and one fast food meal has more calories than an average person needs in a whole DAY.

    • @KatieBellino
      @KatieBellino Před rokem +15

It's definitely easier to control the caloric intake of kids under 12. You're the adult, portion it out for them. It does seem that in some cases, the parents don't understand what a child's portion is and they feed them adult portions. If your child is fat, I would think you would be researching such things sooner.

I spend $200 a week on groceries because I buy loads of fresh fruit & vegetables, lean meats, fresh fish, good quality cheeses, lovely whole grain bread, pantry staples (spices, flour, tinned things like coconut cream, crushed tomatoes, etc). I could spend half that & fill the trolley with nuggets, chips, fish fingers, heavily processed lunch meats, cheap white bread, etc. It’s a lot cheaper to feed your kids absolute crap & it would be so much easier for me to just dump a bag of nuggets in an air fryer & feed them that than it is to make a lovely home made dinner. If you’re poor, it’s really hard to afford the good stuff.

In my experience, obese children are the worst behaved kids I’ve ever met. And now I know why- because their parents are lenient and have a hard time saying no to the kids, the kids are lacking in nutrients and getting fed processed stuff that probably messes with their hormones, and they are extremely entitled and reluctant to change.

I was obviously severely underweight and I continue to have many health complications because of that, but it's incredible how human bodies can do both, the extreme overweight and the extreme opposite, while just trying to survive. While I agree with the idea that these kids need to be more active, I also don't think it's as simple as them eating too much. Yes, they're likely being fed too much, but from what I've seen here, it's also WHAT they're being fed. White bread, potatoes, processed stuff like heat and eat frozen junk. If the parents cut out the junk, cook healthy meals (and sometimes saying NO) they'd be much better off. Plus all the processed junk can also lead to some of the out of control behaviors. It would benefit the overweight parents too.

It always makes me a little sad to see an overweight child. Their parents are setting them up for failure in adulthood and they will likely become sick sooner. I think a lot of it has to do with lazy parenting. It is just easier to give them the chocolate than to say no and hear them whine. I have two elementary school aged children. Both with normal BMI. Why? Because my willpower is stronger than theirs. They have learned it is not worth asking. Treats are earned by eating healthy meals first and they are very small. They do not sit like zombies in front of screens; they play outside 80% of the time. They only get games on weekends if they are good and cleaned their room. Parents these days are too soft and want to be their friends and overindulge their every whim. It is creating soft whiny little bitches that want everything handed to them. The type that wants a hand out and to play on their phone through class and their work shift. Buck up parents and do what is right by your kids even if it isn't the easiest.

And I agree, kids aren't going to die just because they're hungry for a while before dinner. Some parents seem to think kids shouldn't have to wait at ALL, so they give them all these unhealthy "snacks". Then the kids aren't hungry enough at dinner to want healthy things like veggies, and after dinner they're too stuffed and sluggish to do anything except sit and watch TV or hang out online. I come from an overweight, nearly obese family, too. I’m absolutely the anomaly cuz as a health science major, witnessing my family’s habits I determined to change things. For about the last 5 yrs I’ve worked out consistently and have edited my diet to reflect healthy options way more.
I disagree with his diet and lifestyle changes for these kids. As my wife and I dated over the last 4 yrs she gained about 70 lbs cuz she enrolled in college. I applied my knowledge which hasn’t been strict and she dropped about 30 lbs in maybe 15 weeks. She added no extra physical activity and only modified eating at home, no take out, choosing more veggies and purging almost all snacks. Of course, we still had snacks and treats, candy, very occasional takeout, etc.
The very strict diet and lifestyle changes for these kids aren’t necessary. I write this bc for instance my wife was given a very strict diet in Egypt, her origin country. She dropped whatever weight, hated every second of dieting, and once she stopped the diet, gained all the weight back. This became cyclical and developed into an unhealthy relationship with food. I intervened and guided her using nutrition science and understanding how the body handles these nutrients. Her relationship with food has significantly improved and she has sustained weight loss. Dr. Paul’s suggestions here aren’t good overall, I’d say.

I was an obese kid and going to the doctor's about it and making changes at home gave me an eating disorder that I'm carrying into my twenties. It's not fair to make the kid think it's their fault. Reducing portion sizes so drastically made me over obsess about food, so I would eat everything I could fit in my stomach as soon as no one was looking or I had no restriction for once, just to fill up in case next meal was insufficient (it always was in my eyes). Also it made me over fixate in how my body looked as an eight year old, which is something I had never thought about before. Because of these things, the changes never worked. I just wish my parents and my doctors had done it in a way that was healthier for me not only mentally but also physically. I still don't know which way is that but I'm suffering seeing at this kid's faces, specially that one girl who was used to a big dinner and one day she found only a small bakes potato and some salad. I know from now on she'll be eating everything she can get her hands on and it'll turn into an eating disorder.

What they were supposed to do wasnot reduce the amount of food, but change ingredients, fill the plate with pretty colorful vegetables, swap white bread for wholegrain, that kind of stuff. And explain to kids. oh weˇ re eating carrots to have good eyes, we have fish for healthy heart, we have yoghurt for strong bones! I'm sure that would have worked great for these kids, make them motivated and positive! Who the heck accuses a 5yo of being overweight and create shame and trauma for the rest of their life! She was just putting together a "diet" plate with a small portion and a salad because that what she thinks a diet looks like. I'd certainly be upset with that plate myself. Potatoes are low calorie if they don't have added stuff on them. You could give the kid two whole good sized potatoes and be under 300 calories! Throw some seasoning and salsa on them for flavor.

Healthy foods are much cheaper than junk food. Especially in the UK and the US. Fresh fish and avocados are not the only healthy foods, you know. Local produce, freezer food and simple proteins are extremely inexpensive. Lying won't get you anywhere.
Healthy food was absolutely an option for your family. Just not healthy food that you ever got used to eating, because it doesn't taste like the garbage you're addicted to.
And even with all that, if you're overweight, you're not poor. Overweight means you're overeating, which means you're buying way more food than you need.
It always costs less to eat less.
Again, Iying won't get you anywhere, and it certainly won't get you to health.

It costs so much more to eat a diet of junk food as it does not really keep you full for long so you need more of it.
Junk food is not cheap, in Australia you can pay up to $6+ for a bag of chips that’s half full.
I can buy 1 bag of chips or 8 bananas. Or 2 punnets of strawberries.

Some people are very active and have a healthy diet and are physically perfectly healthy and are a little heavier (again, in proportion to height) than someone else who's just extremely lean and different types of sport will also impact how your muscles are differently built. All that can be normal and healthy and perfectly fine. Not every body is the same. But it's a big difference seeing that not every body is the exact same and striving to be healthy and fit and this. This woman's literal toddler is already experiencing health issues and she shrugs and says "genes" and that is nothing but a lazy excuse to pretend none of it is in her power so also not her responsibility. It's neglectful.
