    A few inconsequential corrections to the early history -- I made SRBXmas (the SRB2 TGF re-skin), and Sonikku actually met me prior to us working with Stealth. The 'vanilla' SRB2-TGF was not released until many years later -- it was never intended as a public release in the state it was in.

    Because my family was a little too poor to afford the latest and greatest consoles, I stuck with "free" PC games for most of my early childhood... and because of that I got to watch this beautiful piece of artistic expression grow up alongside me. I probably would not be as into video games as I am right now if it wasn't for projects like this showing me creativity isn't dead, it just goes wherever it's most comfortable.

    50:55 Act 2 literally contains the level layout from the 1.09.4 version, as you enter a room with a giant pool in the middle with four sections leading out. (Though one is boarded off, so there's three.) Two of those sections (the left ones) even appear to be loosely based on their 1.09.4 counterparts.

  • @LightspeedAdventurer
    @LightspeedAdventurer Před rokem +5

    I've played the SRB2 , and I think it's good, but it really has a problem in the physics. Very slippery and the player stops too slowly, and the jump height isn't really high enough. The wiki states that the thok will be replaced or and the physics will be significantly reworked, which would be a godsend. Red Volcano was absolute hell to play mostly because of the physics, and the rework could make the physics much better. About the zones, I thought Greenflower was really good and also had great background music I also really liked Castle Eggman Zone and its aesthetics, but the boss was very difficult. I got stuck on Arid Canyon Act 2 (the minecart section) and tried it like 40 times before getting through it, then I got to Red Volcano which was, as I said, extremely hard mostly due to the physics (I'm just glad it's just a single act long)... I'm currently up to Egg Rock Zone and taking a break from playing the game.

    I started playing SRB2 in 2013 with version 2.0. At the time, I was using a Macbook and STjr didn’t update the Mac port as much as the Windows version so I was left out on the latest features and the multiplayer stuff. I found a patch one day that upgrade the .app to a newer version but it still didn’t have multiplayer available. Regardless, I sticked with this game for my whole childhood. I had SOOO much fun with it then, and I still do now since revisiting it in late 2020. I got stuck on the old Castle Eggman stage a lot, but I had a fun time running around. v2.2 overhauled the game in its entirety and I’m so glad that after all these years, STjr is still at it.

      I just discovered the kart racer mod, you can say the same about that one, I just wish it had more good single player. It's still fun just going through the tracks. I wish more developers would use the doom engine, it just feels and looks great. I prefer a doom mods over an unreal 5 game anyday.
      Actually now that I think about it, they should probably just crap out money grabs, they would have to bring on some passionate experienced modders, give them the funding to allows them to create.
      If I was rich I would throw money at these creators and let them go wild, imagine if they could quit their jobs and fully commit.

    • @Konic_and_Snuckles
      @Konic_and_Snuckles Před rokem +3

      *Short Answer:* The Doomsday Engine didn't exist yet.
      *Long Answer:* Back in November 1998, SSNTails-a fan of SRB1, and the creator of a Doom wad titled "Sonic Doom"-reached out to Sonikku and pitched the idea of turning SRB2 into a 3D fan game. He showed him the sequel wad he had been working on at the time, "Sonic Doom 2: Bots on Mobius," slated for release in December. Sonikku evidently liked what he saw, because he scrapped the TGF engine, as well as a custom C-based engine Stealth had been working on, and began collaborating with SSNTails instead. Thus, Sonic Doom 2, or SD2, essentially became the substrate of SRB2's early development. It was a promising start, but in order to make a proper third-person 3D platformer that could stand on its own two legs, SRB2 would need to be capable of feats not possible in vanilla Doom or SD2.
      ZDoom was, by all accounts, the very best Doom source port at that time, and from a technical standpoint it absolutely spanked its predecessor, DOSDoom. Unfortunately, it lacked several key features SSNTails needed to fully realize Sonikku's vision for SRB2. So ZDoom was out.
      As for the Doomsday Engine, that was only a pet project of community developer Skyjake at the time. He would eventually show it off to the world with the release of jHexen in November 1999, but he wouldn't release the source code until the following year. Plus, not having the benefit of hindsight, Sonikku and SSNTails wanted a demo out by Halloween. So Doomsday wasn't going to happen either.
      Fortunately, there was exactly one Doom source port at that time which did have the features those two needed (namely: mouselook, chasecam, FOFs, water blocks, and 32-player netplay): the Doom Legacy engine. So, after 45 days of intense development, on October 31, 1999, Sonikku and SSNTails released the first ever public demo of SRB2 running on a modified Doom Legacy engine v1.28. The rest, they say, is history.

    Even if I started playing this game in mid-late 2010s I find it to be my favorite game of all time, this due to the release of 2.2 which was hyping as FUCK, my fav yter at the time played it and as a result I did too, came back to play this gem after not touching it for some time and I absolutely loved it, so SO much I went into the multiplayer and discovered the mods, which, had done it for me, they made me an addict...But in a good way.
    Since then I've been playing the different mod packs (stages and characters) I could find and have a (robo) blast with them (this has to be the only game where you can play as fucking KIRYU AND SONIC). Add to this that it's in this version that my sister and I began playing actively. I just can't put into words how much fun and joy this game gives me, I've replayed it a thousand times already and I feel like I'll never get tired of it.
