Bill Maher and the great Bob Costas randomly riff on the passing of Bill’s mentor Richard Belzer, Bill’s favorite Sports Illustrated cover, why today’s baseball pitchers are so frail, the legendary announcer Bill never liked, the best example of racial harmony in our culture, Bob’s take on Fox News and CNN, Bob’s favorite part of Real Time, why Bob turned down doing 60 Minutes, and what Bill hates about the NFL.

As a 25 year old I have been watching Bill for years. I am one of the few "young people" he mentions that think like him. I wish I could talk to him in person. He is so engaging and his centrist, common sense is music to my ears. I enjoy that he can talk to both sides of the spectrum and call out the bs they say while also finding things in common with them.

Sure. But hey, Rogan is doing a helluva job at picking up the slack on that. Right? And you aren't limited to 22 minutes and 8 minutes of commercials. The full on deep three hour interview with someone who has enough of value to fill the whole three hours, is two steps above the short outings that the old Later show represented.

I met Bob Costas sometime in the early 90's while a newspaper intern and he was in town for a speaking gig. He had some down time so we spent time chatting. I'm not a sports fan but watched his old show "Later with Bob Costas" and he made a few appearance on Letterman back the in the day. This line is a classic: czcams.com/video/Okw2ciYE6oc/video.html -- I complimented him on his breadth of knowledge. You could tell he was well versed on a wide range of topics in his interviews. My family had The World Book encyclopedia too.. but from 1962 (which is a few years before I was born.) I enjoyed thumbing through it often, even before I could even read and possibly thought Kennedy was president into the 1970s lol.

What a great interview. The fact that at 71 Bob can pull so much data out of his brain that he's experienced/seen and then use in conversation is amazing. I say that as someone in their late 50's. Aside from some movie quotes, there is no way in hell I could do what he does in that manner. I have a pretty good memory, but man..
Side note and sort of related - when they were talking about people who seemingly are uninterested - if not outright hostile - about hearing something they don't know about rather than being INTERESTED in learning something new.. That is a thing, but not something new, necessarily. That's in a sense like music hipsters who can't bear the thought of someone knowing/liking what they like and flat out refusing to even entertain the idea of listening to something brought to their attention because they didn't hear it first.

~ okay... for those of you who didn't catch it... if you go 28 minutes & 55 seconds into this video, they switch the angle of the camera for only about 4 seconds and it's right when bill maher lights up his joint... kudos to the editor on that profound amazing & genius decision!! ☆ that's called ART people... and for a split second, i actually felt like i was in the room getting high with bill maher:)

I’m on the right, and I really enjoyed these discussions, and like both of these guys. I got a lot of respect for old liberals politics. Btw, I got to talk to Bob Costas for about an hour, because of my occupation, and it was a great moment in my life. I came away very impressed by him as a human being. He loves to share opinions on sports, like he’s doing here with Bill, and he was attentive to mine. Bob is a class act, and very intelligent, much like Bill.

In the mid 1970's I lived across the street from Forest Park in STL and this other single guy my age, Bobby Costas from NY, moved in across the hall. He moved there to work for KMOX radio. He was my neighbor across the hall for 3 or 4 years and a seriously nice guy even when he was starting to get national attention. From what I've seen over the years since, he hasn't changed a bit. We used to get high together :)

I remember when Bob Costas was on mornings at KMOX with Jack Carney on his radio program. Bob was hilarious when they would recreate radio dramas.

Hahaha. Love these two together. Been watching Bill since his original broadcast show. He's amusingly crotchety on Real Time of late. Bob Costas just never ages. This episode reminds me of my very solid, California Dem liberal roots. And what I still am. The things that parade as the extremists of my party simply - aren't.
