The non turbo base model has a 6 speed manual transmission with a whopping 120 HP. Talk about slow. Plus the GDI engine needs more maintenance than just a simple oil change, something I didn’t know about. The base model veloster I had was all bark no bite. I'm the original owner of a 2007 scion tc with 178k miles. I put an new alternator in it at and plugs at 112k miles, and I just had to replace the water pump and did the serpentine belt while I was in there. The old belt was still in decent shape, no cracks or tears. The only downside is having to check the oil like crazy. I don't think I'll ever own anything other than a Toyota after having this car.

My 2006 TC has been an awesome car. I bought it in 2007 it had 23k miles on it. I did have to have a clutch put in it because I kicked the rev limiter in pretty bad leaving work cuz I was pissed at my boss. The clutch threw out one of the springs and it got stuck behind the clutch fork. I actually take responsibility for that because I reved it like a friggin maniac. Other than that I’ve put an alternator on it and a catalytic converter. I have 208k miles on it now and it still starts and runs exactly like it did when I bought it in 2007. Doesn’t leak any fluids, it still has the original coolant, gear oil, and power steering fluid in it. Doesn’t smoke and will still burn the tires off if I get on it. It’s because of this car that Toyota is the only car I’ll buy. Oh I forgot to mention everything still works on the car. All the gages, ac, sunroof, absolutely everything still works on my car at 18 years old and 208k miles.

Taught my mom how to drive it in 2 minutes and she swore up and down that she never would learn how to drive manual because her first experience was in a 70s Chevy. My tire pressure monitor was doing the same thing. Unless it's truly out you can reset it by holding down the button hidden in the passenger glove box for about 10 seconds and the light should go off. I'd say most vehicles are "fixable". The question is how much do you want to put into a vehicle to keep it running. IMO unless it's a classic or something rare (or just something that would otherwise appreciate in value if it was fixed),then fix it. But if it's more than 1/3 or 1/2 the value of the vehicle, forget it. For most vehicles, it's not worth it to spend half the value of the vehicle to fix or replace a motor, unless the car has some meaningful value to you (like it was a family heirloom or passed down through generations).
I've gotten in the habit of checking my oil every month on even brand new cars, and in reality, I check it every time I fill up. I mean it takes about 5 seconds to pop the hood and check it, but it can save you a lot of headaches and money later on if you can keep up on it (especially if it has a leak or burns it). I would say that's probably one of the top reasons people's engines fail--they don't check check the oil and change it regularly). Or some people just wait until a light comes on and then check it. IMO by that time, if you've lost 1/2 quart or more of oil, you've already done a fair amount of damage to your engine probably.

But even if its almost half the value to fix it on a big repair.. Thats still cheaper than jumping into a whole new vehicle most times.

wrong, paying to repair a car will always be better than buying a new car that is 30% overpriced with a high APR these days near the 10% range... new cars are horrible deals these days even the cheap crappy Kias are 25k now lol

Hey Scotty, what is your opinion on the Ford 5.4 3 valve Triton? Mine is terrible because the spark plugs hidden underneath the cylinder heads.

Everyone says "don't buy a brand new car", but I didn't care. I wanted a brand new car one time in my life. Ordered my 2005 tc from the Toyota website and 6 weeks later, picked it up at the dealer. Still driving it now. Thought I would keep it for 10 years, but it kept going nice and decided to see about 20 years. I did have to replace the front end frame assy (I live in upstate NY with the rough winters, salty roads, etc), which was $1500. The original battery worked for 14 YEARS lol. Replaced the full exhaust system with an aftermarket model about 5 years ago, and now have to do it again. And had to have the driver side front CV joint/axle assy replaced. The driver side hood hinge needs to be replaced. And the rubber gaskets inside the windows need to be replaced. Have gone thru about 5 gas caps. All in all, those replacement parts are still cheaper than buying another vehicle. Yeah dents dings scratches. But it's still going. 👍
