  • Winner of 4 Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Bong Joon-ho brings his singular mastery home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale. Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide "indispensable" luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims' newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks. By turns darkly hilarious and heart-wrenching, Parasite showcases a modern master at the top of his game.

    Notice how Min enters the Kim family's home without knocking while they have to ring the Park family's doorbell, wait for someone to open the door, climb stairs, walk some more and then finally get inside their home through another door. I think Bong is trying to show us that rich people easily impose themselves on poor people while poor people have to go through a series of steps just to meet them.

    If you guys notice, the pizza lady who talked to them is also a build-up detail in this movie. In South Korea, if you are talk to stranger or someone who is not related to you in any way possible, you have to used jondaemal a.k.a formality. But if you talked to stranger using banmal a.k.a informality that means you look lowly to them. In this dialogue, she used a mix of banmal and jondaemal which means she looks at them underestimately.

    1:15 That silver medal and the picture shows that although Mrs.Kim once was an excellent sports player, she couldn't win the gold medal. And so she ended up falling out from her 'planned' life.(It happens in S.Korea because everywhere people competes, the winner takes, the loser disappears.) If she had won the gold medal, her 'plan A' might be building her career as a player and becoming a coach and more, but she faced an unplanned failure and nothing was left. So she might have chosen to marry somebody as a 'plan B', but it also fails, now she asks her husband, "So what's your plan?"
    Everyone has their own life plans. But only the winner can live as planned. So this film starts telling about all the losers under the only one winner.

      Mirtheous Parasite (maybe) not winning an award is not OscarsSoWhite. It’s just the fact it’s not an American or British film that turns off the academy. It’s not racism, but a lot of the academy probably prefer films like 1917 because it’s more of an Oscar film. Parasite is not like an Oscar film and is part of why it’s so great. Even though films like Jojo and Parasite are way better than pretty good films like 1917, you have to understand the Academy adores historical films. The Oscars so white movement is pretty much over now. They started fixing it in 2017 and it’s really not a big problem anymore. They nominated Black Panther for 6 awards, if that’s not them trying hard not to be racist I don’t know what is.

    Min (ex-tutor), the rich friend of Kim Ki-woo (son of poor family) mentions his grandfather started collecting the scholar's rocks since his cadet days. The key term here is "cadet days".
    The more complete translation would be:
    "My grandfather started collecting the scholar's rocks since his time as a cadet (or student) in the Korea Military Academy (of South Korea)."
    The translation in the movie is great, but there is only so much you can cram into short lines of text.
    KMA is South Korea's version of West Point of US. Doing a quick math shows Min's grandfather in this story would've been a student in KMA in the 1950s, probably right after the end of Korean War in 1953.
    If you were able to gain admission into KMA around 1950s, you basically got the ticket to a life of the upper middle class and/or the elite. As long as you didn't screw up majorly, you really made it. In the 1950s, S. Koreans either lived life of subsistence farmer (vast majority) or merchant (very few) or government official (very few). If one gained admission into KMA around that time, you basically got on the fast track in life.
    It was a great honor and difficult to get into KMA around that time, as in any society that just experienced a major war AND not much option of career available for young people.
    Min subtly dropping here that his grandfather went to KMA is basically Min flexing. And the Kim family doesn't really mind because they know what KMA signifies.

Saying that their grandpa was a KMA graduate is not much a show-off and after all Min has no reason to show it off at that moment since they are featured as close friends and thus both family should already know each other's family background. He was just explaining how he came to appear with that unusual gift.

    Well at 6:40,
    I’m partly agreed with some other comments that Min did brag about how wealthy his grandpa is, e.g. that his grandpa got to study in an elite institution and possesses plenty of rare stones in his collection. The fact that this stone will symbolically bring the prosperity also show his pity for his his friend’s (Kiwoo’s) poor family.
    However, in my opinion, Min might not “intentionally” want to offend his best friend or anything. Ones can see from his smile after Kiwoo’s metaphorical sentence how he’s happy knowing Kiwoo liked his present.
    Even though Min’s explanation sounded insulting to Kiwoo, he still understood that Min gave him the stone out of good wills. So he tried to change the subject patiently by saying ‘Min! This is so metaphorical’ without resentful expressions.
    I conclude that Min considered Kiwoo as his real best friend. If not he wouldn’t step into Kiwoo’s house freely or introduce Kiwoo to his grandpa. Whether he really looked down on Kiwoo is unclear, as not much information are given. (The drinking scene can be interpreted differently)
    But for Kiwoo, it’s poverty that makes him feel like he has much lower status in their relationship or Min may get along with him only out of pity.
    PS Pardon my poor English as it’s not my mother tongue 😭

    • @tiffanypersaud3518
      @tiffanypersaud3518 Před 4 lety +4

      awasetsu, your English was good! Thank you for sharing your interpretation.
      I liked how Min was kind to Ki-Woo. Ki-Woo admires him, but may be a bit jealous of him, taking his girlfriend with the same words “I’m serious. I will ask her out when she enters university.”
      It is spiteful because Min didn’t see Ki-Woo as a threat, or that she’s be interested in him romantically. It’s not all bad, but these things are indeed deep-rooted in Ki-Woo’s subconscious and it colours his decisions.

    1. The real estate agent takes pictures of flowers blooming in the place where the body is buried. It's beautiful on the outside, but people don't know what's underneath it. Like you don't know who's in the basement.
    2. Ki-jung goes down to the basement with some food but ki-woo goes down to the basement with a stone. Parasites are more likely to survive if there are fewer competing objects. Ki-jung tried to coexist with other parasites(but Ki-woo tried to kill them) Such coexistence is a threat to the survival of the parasite and eventually ki-jung died.
    3. The toilet at the very low end of the rich house works better than the one at the top of the poor house. The basement of the rich is better than the house of the poor.
    4. Kitaek has experience driving a taxi. In a Korean movie called Taxi Driver, Song Kang-ho is a taxi driver.
    5. the lines (When the maid wakes the rich lady up, she crosses the glass line. Waiting for mr. Park, ki-taek does not cross the glass line. When Kiwoo rolls a water bottle on the floor and gives it to Kijeong, the water bottle crosses the line. Kiwoo's feet lying on the grass cross the glass line.)
    6. The high-quality toy tent doesn't leak, while poor homes are flooded. (the movie says the tent is made in US)
    7. the worms and bugs. Ki-taek's family climb up the stairs with their two hands and feets like animals. They crawl out of the table like bugs. They have fun all night and hide like cockroaches when the rich family comes.
    8. Is the plum tea made by the housekeeper just tea? Possibility that the rich wife drank it and fell asleep very deeply. The maid could have put something in a plum tea to secure time to feed her husband. Or there could have been alcohol in it. There is a scene. the man in the basement drinks it before he kills a person.
    9. The rich family hung Dasong's painting of the man in the basement on the wall. The housekeeper's husband hang a picture of mr. Park in the basement and worships him. There is awe in the sight of the poor looking at the rich. Even though the rich give them nothing, they worship in the hope of something. On the other hand, the rich don't look directly at the poor as if they were just looking at art without reality.
    10. In Dasongi's painting, the black part is the basement, and the arrow above it is a sign that something rises.

Don't be misled by this helpless prick who cast aspersion on someone's character who says truth, just because she does not want to accept it.

    I'm just relying on the subs but basing on the dialogue, i feel like Min was feeding his ego from the fact that there was a family like his friend's far below his own.
    At 8:16
    Kiwoo: *"Why ask a loser like me?"*
    Min: *"Why do you think?"*
    (Normally at this point a healthy friend would spew motivational words but then instead Min's answer was)
    *"Just the thought makes me sick"*
    *"Those disgusting frat boys slavering over Da-hye? It's revolting"*
    Min didn't argue against Kiwoo's self-deprecation, calling himself a *Loser* instead he just continued on with his story. For him, Kiwoo is no contender for Dahye's interest.
    He appears to be genial, and good-natured but was that all there is to him? Think about the stone he brought, if he really mean well and was sincerely thinking then why not food, indeed? Why stone.
    Food = Warm
    Stone = Cold
    This is just my interpretation of the dialogue shared. But for me, it's either he's a genuine friend or another guy befriending someone supposedly 'beneath' him to feel good about himself. He could be as fake as his stone.

      artorius julius : Actually no, I don’t think so. I think the violence symbolizes the cruelty of poverty versus the superficiality of the rich, and that they have no clue how the impoverished live....... I only put that because my most intellectual friend is tired of men directors putting graphic violence at the end of films, as if to glorify it and win awards. I apologize, because I don’t believe that is true in this case. It’s meant to shock and sadden the viewer and make us feel the tragedy of this poor family using lies to get a better life........

    i never noticed just how much foreshadowing is in the first 10 minutes of this god tier movie.
    the first lines spoken are 'we're screwed,' implying from the start that the family had no future, and that there was never any hope for anything good to happen out of the job opportunities.
    then the wife asking the dad 'what's your plan?' a direct refrence the gym scene where the son asks his dad what his plan was.
    the dad saying 'for wifi, hold it high' implying that technological advances and connection to the world can only be accessed higher up than where they are, in a higher class, or even physically higher than their house, which is below ground, and the rich family's house, which is on a hill.
    theres so many more. every single line in this movie has a purpose. i have literally never seen a more beautifully written movie. it's genius and brilliant. such a well deserved best picture :D
