This guy we called "Hollywood" on our team did the same his sophomore year. But he was one of the stars of the team. He still wasnt back to normal. Eh I never took this study too seriously. 12 players is a small sample, and the study isn't really controlling for other variables like the player's age, position, the time period they were injured. Historically, Achilles injuries happen to older players with a lot of miles on them so it coincides with their natural decline due to aging making it hard to determine which factor was the main culprit for the player's decline. I suspected that KD would still be a superstar player when he returned given his age and play style, but it's still crazy he's this good already.
