Nobody can blame the Rockets for picking Olajuwon on #1 draft pick. He was absolutely a beast and they needed a center, plus they won 2 titles.
didnt they already have ralph sampson tho? or is he a PF
@@wansome1440 I'd still pick Hakeem "the Dream" Houston made the best fucking choice possible. They didnt need a project with mj, the bulls made the best choice, the 2nd pick was a fumble tho.
@@anshuman1808 In hindsight, yeah pick 2 was a fumble BUT I understand why Portland picked Sam Bowie. He was a top 5 big man in that draft(they needed one) PLUS they already had Clyde Drexler, who played the same position, same style(high flyer), & damn near same height as MJ...

Rebounding is the only stat known to reliably translate to the NBA. Simmons, Towns, Embiid, Giannis, AD, Kawhi, and Paul George were all solid rebounders. Curry was an above-average rebounder for a guard. So was Russ. The list goes on.
Old comment but yeah. Points and assists are heavily reliant on the offensive scheme your coach is running, same with blocks and steals on the defense.
that makes a lot of sense honestly, rebounding tends to be the most consistent thing you can do in basketball
looking back on this is funny with simmons
Watching this in 2023 and seeing how two of the players he circled as the best in their draft class turn out to not be the best in their draftclass 3 years later, even though this video was already made well after this draft.

When evaluating draft picks, you should only look at the first 4 years because that’s the amount of time a team has rights to the player.
When looking at the first 4 years, D-Rose was the best player in the 2008 draft.
idk who was in the 1982 draft, but if it wasnt MJ than idk in what world is Kareem not the best player in the draft. Same with Hakeem

I feel like you could definitely still get the first overall pick right even if you didn't draft the best player in the draft. The last four years of that seven years stretch still yielded Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, John Wall, and Kyrie Irving. None of those picks were misses by any stretch of the imagination.
Same with Hakeem Olajuwon. Everyone thought you needed a big man to win back then, and they got a top 3 centre and won 2 titles with him. Plus he went to uni in Houston

Seeing Ben and Zion as the best has me rolling now
I GUARANTEE no one as a GM would've picked Giannis in the 2013 Draft with the 1st pick, let alone the top 5 picks. My Milwaukee Bucks luckily got him and he's the greatest steal in NBA Draft history at Pick #15! I remember it pretty clearly, he was considered pretty unpolished with shooting and dribbling as weaknesses. We drafted him based on 1, maybe 2 things: A) His potential was unlimited as he was only 18 still growing with the wingspan of a fuckin Pterodactyl (we've seen that now) and (B) he had a great work ethic.
I remember being happy with the pick because #15 overall picks are usually expected to be role players at best, and I saw his ceiling as like a fringe All-star But I DOUBT anyone thought he could be as amazing as he is today. He was also tough to evaluate because he was basically self-made, never really had elite coaching/training and his competition level was in the Greek League's 3rd Division in 2011 and only the 2nd Division in 2012 where his stock was then rising fast but the Greek 2nd Division is NOWHERE close to the NBA- probably around a top 20-50 D1 college program (?) where he averaged like 10 PPG and decent rebounding.
He improved by A LOT every year though (like +5 PPG every season!!) and the time I remember really noticing how good he could be (like MVP level, which NO ONE expected when he was drafted) was when we took the #1 seeded Celtics to 7 games as an 8 seed basically thanks to him alone (Khris Middleton was another surprise that took several years to develop) and we are a small-market team so thank god he's super loyal. He was already like All-star level at that point and CLEARLY willing to put in the work to be the best so it's been a dream come true b/c we weren't a contender since like 2000 w/ Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson.
Idk man, Jokic at #41 was a pretty damn good steal as well.
yeah @uzairellahi9596 I agree with you, jokic is one if not the best player currently and he was drafted during a taco bell commercial

That's how ik who to choose through this unfortunately😂 but I understand the whole video. I've been slacking this year and havent been keeping up with the players for next draft.. but if I were the GM.. I'm going James Wiseman. If anything, you know hes going to give it his all, and really that's all you ask in the end. James Wiseman also has the most NBA ready body, ever since he left college ball. @@slim8553 I would go with 6'7 PG Lamelo. Great oversized point-players (ball handler/facilitator) are very good today. Oversized players relative to their position are great in general, but a chance to get a KD, Bron, Giannis, Harden, Doncic, or Simmons type of player is a must-cop. Lamelo will have to toughen his body up to bang with NBA players tho. As long as injuries don't plague Lamelo, he will be the best player in that draft class easily.

Wow Giannis was 6'9' when drafted and now is 6'11'
That's some growth
@the1 nah, training-exercising does that. Your body grows till you're 25
Veeon at the highest level drug usage happens especially with the amount of abuse their bodies receive and how much they need to recover. players like giannis and lebron are freak athletes but to keep using that athleticism at such an incredible pace game after game they need those drugs to be able to keep training and playing, its not so much the need for more “power” its just that they need to be able to “heal” faster.
@the1 Only if growth plates are still open. Male plates close by 15-17. So no, GH didn't help him grow and I doubt he ever took it.
Hes 7ft now
No he became 11''8' after Flight called him Akumpo
I think the two things that are overlooked and hard to predict are 1) Player long term work ethic and motivation 2) Player intuition and instincts for the game
If you could predict those two and how those two factors would develop over a 10-15 year career, the accuracy of picks would change dramatically
Picking Ben Simmons as the best player in his draft class did not age well. I would easily take Jaylen Brown, Domantas Sabonis, Dejounte Murray, Pascal Siakam, or Brandon Ingram over him. But, like you said, hindsight is 20/20.
