  • theMCGuiRE review takes a look at ‪@awakenrealms‬ brand new title with Gamefound funding platform. S.T.A.L.K.E.R The Board Game is excellent in my opinion. I am very much enjoying and playing the prototype materials multiple times now.

    I picked up the pledge, make sure you get monster hunter guy seperetly as addon since he doesnt come in bundle.
    You can also skip legacy chest ammo box, unless you qabt that 9 inch small statue. But $200 seems alot.
    Personally the one below the $500 tier + monster guy and maybe extra sticker map. Is way to get, to get everything.

    Followed your channel after I doing some research about this board game. Like the way you explain things and it definitely made me hype to make a pledge in this campaign!

    Smoke grenade in front of enemies who doesn't react, dead body one case away from an enemy without reaction , turning back because of the orientation dice, shooting from 4 cases away and no noise reaction of ennemies two cases away , line of sight approximative , all of this doesn't bother you and you enjoy the game?
    You can see this summary of mechanics in various posts on BGG for instance.. Well good for you. The only thing that save this game is the art. It's surely very attractive but this not what makes a game a great and good game.
    No rule book as of today, a delivery in two years, something that is definitively a starting project. Just good for AR fan boys. I will buy it eventually if the gameplay change drastically but certainly not with this broken prototype.
    And i'm not an AR hater, i backed Kings of Ruin because , at least, i know that the game is already well made, with a solid experience behind.

    A at the very maximum 48ish-hours playtime for the campaign even after SGs plus a random one shot mode for about 120ish euro for me after VAT and shipping seems like a majorly worse offer than AR has been offering in the past. Can't forget it only includes standees as well for that price. Seems pretty steep, especially when remembering that something like Tainted Grail included 2 full campaigns in the stretch goals alone, each one longer than the full thing you are getting here. ISS Vanguard still had at least one extra campaign. Even Kings of Ruin offered way more. Sure, maybe Stalker does not pad out the game time with unnecessary grind and the lower game time might be a good thing, but again, we don't know that.

    An unforgiving game....as a fan of This War of Mine & Arkham/Eldritch Horror, I think Stalker will definitely be a game for me!

    What do you think about replayability?
    You talked about liking the "reveal factor" but didn't mention if you thought it would be spoiled. I really like the sound of flipping the environment cards and the campaign book changing things round by round but as far as I can see from the various videos on youtube they are all static so there won't be any changes when you play the same mission again?

    • @theMCGuiREreview
      @theMCGuiREreview  Před rokem

      Well from that perspective you are right I believe, for some of it. It appears if you played the entire campaign again, you could make different choices and go different places in different orders. Thus changing it a little. Also getting different gear.
      To be fair - some of it would change but the overall story would still be in tack, as any campaign game would be. They are offering this random mission thing as well that will be different each time. I don't have that in the prototype but you can read about it on the Gamefound page.
      My hope with this is the base campaign will be a rich and long experience, thus providing all the value I would be looking for. Then when I wanted to play again, I could do the random encounter setup they are designing. It's almost like Tainted Grail, if you played the campaign again...would you get different scripts and in a different order - yes. However the same overarching story would be played and you would know the outcome of things for the most part.

      @@theMCGuiREreview "My hope with this is the base campaign will be a rich and long experience"
      That's my concern, they seem to be marketing it as multiple short campaigns that are easier to get to the table - 3 campaigns of 3 missions each according to the gamefound page.
      I worry that I'll play through them really quickly and enjoy them enough that I'll want to replay them but if a lot of the fun is in the discovery I won't enjoy them the second time around.
      For sure the random mission module mitigates that somewhat but I'd need to see how it works to see if it can provide much of a surprise.
      I guess if the core stealth / combat gameplay is good enough it shouldn't matter that the discovery element is reduced on repeated plays. Plus I guess there's always playing with someone knew to experience the surprise through them?

      This game will have infinite replayability, there will be another game mod, zone survival with rogue like elements and random quests

    This is pretty much my dream come true board game as I love Stalker. My question is, does the Zone feel too building heavy? Nature, trees, etc., was a big part of the Zone. Does that come through? Are there more map tiles that are more "nature" looking? Thanks.

    • @theMCGuiREreview
      @theMCGuiREreview  Před rokem +2

      I am not sure. There is a lot of this game’s environmental surroundings to be revealed and or built out. The prototype only came with 2 single missions. There is so much more to this game so i would hope there are different environments. They have recently released an underground location, so i would think more environments are on the way.

    • @Biodelic
      @Biodelic Před rokem

      They reduced the Zone to a flimsy map and some stickers, the rest is left to your imagination. The simple fact that the most important protagonist of the IP is basically none existant in the prototype should tell you everything.

  • @Diggsworth
    @Diggsworth Před rokem

    Still waffling on this one.
    I think overall this is a pretty interesting game, and I'm looking forward to seeing more about it.
    The only thing stopping me right now is relating to the standees/terrain.
    Facing is pretty important.
    With the miniatures it's pretty clear, but with the standees I'm not so sure.
    I mean, I imagine that one side will have the face, and the other the back, but I haven't seen a lot relating to it.
    With the terrain, what you mentioned about the eye-marker clarity is pretty important.
    If you have to keep moving the terrain all the time it feels more like a hinderance than a help.
    People have been asking a lot in the campaign comments but I haven't really seen them comment on it.
    For me the board feels kind of naked without the terrain, but at the same time I don't want to have to keep constantly moving it and disrupting immersive play.
    I know that AR always knocks it out of the park with theme and design, so I know the miniatures will be great, I just don't know whether I need more plastic to add to my pile of shame with Leviathan releasing next week.
    Either way, another fantastic video, I'll probably end up grabbing the all-in, but It'll be closer to the end I think unless a nice update comes out.

    • @theMCGuiREreview
      @theMCGuiREreview  Před rokem +2

      Ya, definitely some things to think through. For me - im all in because the game play is really cool with just the prototype, so i can only image the finished polished copy.
      I still stand behind the comments i made in the “should you buy” video on the terrain. However, for me - i just mess with it because i really like the look and feel of gameplay when the terrain is there. I also think or would hope the terrain is better quality in the production copy. The stuff i have falls apart sometimes when i lift it - its just prototype so thats fine but they definitely have some things to tweak with it.

    • @Diggsworth
      @Diggsworth Před rokem

      @@theMCGuiREreview Yeah, I really want to get the terrain with it because it just completes the immersive feel for me, and honestly makes it more immediately apparantly that something is there, vs. a heavy orange line.

    I'm still missing the stealth part. Is it possible to sneak up to enemies and take them down stealthily?
    And another question. What happens if you move through an enemy to behind them and use camouflage. And is there a benefit for being directly behind an enemy?
    I think it would be cool that if you move in front of an enemy, that they directly counter attack, but if passing left or right from them, that they would turn to you. This makes teamwork better to pass enemies and can change their direction strategically during player phase.
    I hope the stealth part gets a bit more fleshed out. Or maybe it's there, but the rules are not mentioned. At the moment I've backed out, awaiting to hear more on the part of stealth take-downs.

    • @theMCGuiREreview
      @theMCGuiREreview  Před rokem +3

      There is not technically a “stealth take down”. However there is a benefit to getting around behind enemies- you get an extra “star” to hitting them. The game play feels like you are sneaking around though very much and always trying to hide or be out of LoS and range of enemies.
      You have to stop if you enter an enemy space. It could be possible to move around an enemy space or through a LoS and range space - then end movement behind them and use camo. However that would be a very unique situation. Camo is really for offsetting big movements that make a lot of sound.
