Replacing Weather Stripping and the Door Sweep on My Front Door - Save Money and Keep Bugs Out

  • My front door needed new weather stripping and a new door sweep across the bottom. So, in this video I'm showing you how I replaced those things in order to help save money on energy bills (up to 20% on your monthly heating and cooling costs according to the U.S. Department of Energy), and to keep the bugs out.
This all started when I noticed a lot of light and air coming through around my front door... and worse... bugs. I found that there was a huge gap in the weather stripping around the door and that the door sweep across the bottom was pretty much gone.
This being my first time replacing weather stripping, there was indeed unplanned issues (it wouldn't be a DIY home project if there weren't). So, I also walk you through what went wrong so you don't make the same mistakes I did.

I'm glad that you showed the possible problems with weatherstripping a door and not just edit out the problems. Nice Video.

I like the fact that you didn't edit out the miscalculations & showed everyone that sometimes it doesn't always work out perfect the first time...or second in your case third timed a charm. lol nice job!

Thank you thank you thank you for showing the problems incurred!!! I appreciate your humility and allowing those moments to stay and the problem solving that you did to fix it. As you know, we all learn from our mistakes and I hope that others can learn from yours. Plus, now I know about the other weather stripping for those smaller and tighter spaces!! ❤️ Keep up the great work!!

Pro tip, for those that get it too thick and don't want to go out and buy a new roll, just use a utility knife while it's all rolled up and start cutting right in half until you can't anymore, then just go DEEPER. A utility knife will cut through 50% of a roll and that's probably less than what you'll use on one side of a door anyway.

This is one of those jobs that will have to be done again, in some years. By then you will have forgotten what did and didn't work. Suggestion: keep notes and file them where you keep your home repair/maintenance records.
