- Door Bottom Seal (Kerf Cut): amzn.to/3zPNauP
I will walk you through the replacement of an exterior door (1 3/4" width) bottom seal. This specific door has 2 kerf slots/cuts on the bottom and is one of the most common and robust bottom door seals. In addition, I will walk you through other options for bottom door seals in addition to a door sweep which might work better for your specific type of exterior door.

This saved me a bunch of time! We could see a little bit of light under our front door. I had no idea that the threshold was adjustable, couple of spins with the screwdriver and the gap was closed. Thanks!!
You totally saved my life. I’m a new homeowner and recently my under door weather seal fell apart so I tried to replace it. I couldn’t get the gap under the door fully covered no matter how many types I bought and how hard I tried. I finally found your video where you show how you can raise and lower the threshold and lo and behold that’s what I was missing. I was truly going insane and your video saved me. Thank you so much!!! 1:25
ditto -- had a draft coming from the corner of my door threshold because it isn't perfectly level. raised the threshold on one end and it blocks so much more air. thanks so much
I appreciate how you show your viewers different options in your repairs. I've learned a few repair tricks watching your videos. Thanks.
Thanks Brian, I do try to cover as many options as possible as I know we all face a little different challenge with our homes 👍
Thanks for this video. Helped a lot and I appreciate how you mentioned to tighten the hinges and check the threshold first. I wouldn’t have thought of that
Oh my God, you solved and made fixing so easy what I'm dealing with for an elderly lady's door that let's a little moisture in when the wind blows the rain hard. Everything looked good on it, but now I'll adjust the threshold screws.
Thank you, helped me have the confidence and know-how to do it myself.
Really thorough and easy to follow! Thank you!
Very good presentation. Clear and direct to the subject matter. Thank You
Thank you the threshold was the problem on my door. I appreciate your video and you.
I like how on all your videos you make it easy to understand and know what to do. Not many CZcamsrs get it right like you do.
Thanks Eric!
So blessed to find your channel .
Appreciate your helpful and educational demo
Thanks for the video. Helped me replace the broken bottom seal on my door.
Thank you for the to the point no small talk instruction vid.
Sir, I can't thank you enough. I have gone from a complete white-collar incompetent to an adequate do-it-yourself homeowner. Sincerely, FXKOWALSKI
Wow, I love how u layed it all out as I have my backdoor one to replace . Being a woman I can't go wrong now with watching your video as my guide ... thanks
excellent video. Lots of content well delivered.
Wonderful. I am a door specialist and this man has it correct which is surprising for the intertubes. This is a Therma-Tru brand door which I sell replacement caps that cover their adjustment screws and black hinges for them on fleabay. They are hard to find or I wouldn't plug them. I'll add I have 1/8 inch soft wood dowel in my tool bag I jam into wallowed out screw holes then run the screws in. No glue, no fuss, jam it in, snap it off and drill pilot holes when needed then drive the screw. Hole can easily be 'moved' this way. I use longer screws when needed but it is rare. Never use an impact driver which are made for hardened screws only on finish screws that can be seen when installed as they are not hard enough. You damage them and you know it. Knock it off and go fix that leaky door
Hi, someone tried to break in my door. They pull the top of the door open now it drags when I open it. Are there any chances that I fix it. It's the steel top of the door they damaged
@@kshaw2421 Best I can tell you is if it drags they likely messed up the hinges. Insure the screws on both door and jamb are tight in their pockets. A long screw into the top hinge in a hole closest to the middle of the jamb may correct the problem. Look closely to see if they bent the hinges which would need replaced and if so remove one and head to the store to get the right type
@@skygh....They separated the outside panel of the top of the exterior door. So it drags when I open it. Is there something I can purchase to connect it back together. I know the have slide on door sweeps for the bottom of the door is there one for the top also?
@@kshaw2421 This is going to be very long. I don't know of any already made 'cap'. I would first get eye to eye with it and confirm I could slide a piece of metal between top of door and jamb and still have extra room If so then you could have a cap made from thin stainless steel at a sheet metal fabricator or HVAC company. Consider gluing the skin back together when installing the cap Take Lots of measurements!! or pull the hinge pins and take the door to them so they can measure it themselves. If you have a popular brand you might find a reasonable replacement door panel. It would need painted etc of course. I have to imagine your situation so I hope I understand your plight
@@kshaw2421 If your door has a sheet metal face that folds in at the doors edges and is crimped into the wood the metal may be bent out enough to catch now. You may be able to bend it back some to stop the drag for now at least
you are a freaking life saver and I migraine preventer. thank you!
Good stuff Scott... again........... and as usual. Look forward to these and enjoy presentation manner. JimE
Thanks Jim, appreciate the support.
My front door is 24 years old. I think this spring I'm going to have to take a look at the bottom seal. Thanks for posting.
If you have the Kerf slots it should be an easy swap. Best of luck 👍
Liked and subscribed! Very helpful. Thank you sir!
Great video, almost bought a new weather strip but only needed to adjust threshold.
Thank you. I’ve got to do this on the garage-deck door when the temp gets above freezing.
Thanks for posting this video. I just learned a new thing. My best regards
Thanks Kaisy!
Really thankful for this video
Excellent Video. Thank you
Excellent video. Thank you very much

Very helpful thank you. Found you off the Coach Carson podcast.
Thank you! So timely!! 🙂
Yeah the 10F weather always reminds me of the importance of weather seals 🥶
Very helpful! Thank you

Very helpful helpful thank you!
Great video!
great video, thank you
Thank you so much Scott, my doors are 26 years old and need help, I just don't have the muscle to lift a door and good help is very hard to find
Thanks for sharing!
You bet!
Worth noting you can buy under-door Kerf fit seals with different Kerf spacing. The first one I bought had them too far apart. Just make sure you're getting the right one.
Thanks for the feedback Jason.
Nice informative vid, as not many out there that’s “new”, w/ todays building science; imo. Also, mist don’t “show” how things work & step-by-steps as the vid would be long (but ppl could do a series w/ multiple vids) but trying to keep it fun, entertaining, & unboring…..not easy on a topic that really is key & important with exterior doors, especially if have rot in threshold, frame, & sweep falling apart along w/ weather stripping.
Nice😅
A good exterior door is key as well. Hired a contractor to remove a 3 panel glass sliding patio door & install a 36” exterior door w/ no “light”. Sadly, the threshold wasn’t sealed & flashed. Door was cheapest builders grade could buy, & was framed so wonky that around entire door able to see light coming thru in morning when sun hits it; along w/ that cold air. I ended up used double weather stripping to help, but door isn’t square/plumb, & really needs to be replaced with a better quality door that has a thermal break built in, as this doesn’t & heat/air loss/transfer is poorest I’ve ever seen, 🤦🏼. Lessened learned w/ this contractor.
Lots of help and easy as 123
just what I need... thanks a lot!
You bet!
Great video, clear and concise!
Helped me thank you
😉 SCOTT…YOU ARE TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER…WHEN AVOIDING THE DRAFT HAD A TOTALLY DIFFERENT MEANING
BUT THIS TIME OF YEAR…THIS IS A VERY USEFUL VIDEO 🤗😍😍😍
Made me laugh!
@@TermsAndConditionsApply 👍🤗😎💚💚💚
That was perfect. I have changed the seal on one door and it was a tight fit where I have to push the door hard to make it close. I never knew that you can adjust the bottom threshold. I will do that. Thank you for the tip. Great video as always
Thanks Hassan, I also didn't know that until about 6 months ago. 👍 Happy New Year!
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Thank you. Happy New Year
👍🏻 Good video.
Thx!
I think I have to use the inside sweep. My mudroom door is missing a bottom seal and I think a past owner removed it because after redoing the floor there there is very little and uneven clearance under the door (120 yr old house). Would it make sense to put a sweeper on both sides to get a better seal?
Thank you
Thank you.
You’re welcome.
Thanks for the great instructional content. If i am replacing an existing bottom sweep (with screw holes), will I be able to reuse the same screw holes? Or will I have to drill new ones? Appreciate any feedback if possible. Cheers.
Thanks for the video. Do you have any tips or tricks on how to remove doors that have security hinges? My exterior doors unlike my interior doors have pins that just don’t pop out.
Great video!! Can one use any type of seal? Or do we have to use the same that was installed before? If we can use any type of seal, which is the best? Thanks!
Hi, and thanks for this! My only question: you didn't mention why you like to snip the splines off a little at each edge? Otherwise, great. You took all the mystery out for me!
I use a couple nails an a bead of clear silicone depending on the mounting flange at the bottom. Some doors r dovetailed that slide into place.
Thanks
Matt
Thanks for the feedback Matt 👍
@@EverydayHomeRepairs great topic 👌
Mounting flange? Dovetailed? Sorry I’m new to this
Very nice video. I bought a new seal for my garage entry door. Its a pretty cheap one with the adhesive backing. It looks to me that it would be more effective on the outside of the door or the garage side if you will. Is there a rule of thumb for which side or is it just what will work best in this case?
thank you
I'm finding that my door doesn't have enough clearance to fit these, even though it was clearly designed with a kerf. The previous one was super worn down, and anything I try to put on my door makes it too tight of a fit and I can't shut the door.
I would like to see how to replace a threshold that is beat up like mine. Still solid, but beaten and worn.
Thanks a lot,
Now can you tell us about the threshold sill as well? Thanks
First of all, thank you. This type of channels are really helpfull.
Man, I wish I lived in a country with decent building regulations like yours. You can actually repair stuff instead of "good enough" fixes and patches like I do here (méxico)
How would you add some sort of bottom seal to a steel door that has about 1 inch and a quarter of space between the floor and the door? Also the floor is a bit irregular due to wear so the space bellow it decreases as you open the door
Is there a threshold or just a flat floor?
That was a good video but can you explain to me how to put 2 kerf's in the bottom of my door and what size the kerf should be because I like the kerf weather stripping the best.
I've got a french exterior door, I have one heck of a problem with the seal along the two doors in the winter...
How about for internal door with about 1/2" gap at the bottom? Currently I'm just using a towel to cover that bottom area, but it's a pain to constantly re-cover the bottom door with the towel each night... any easy hack to cover the bottom gap, maybe tape cardboard strip to the bottom, etc?
What about for bedroom doors there is about a 2 inch gap where hot air from the rest of the house comes in from there I bought a foam thing from Walmart but it didn’t work because of the gap size of the door
My house was built 20 years ago, original door and pins. The hinge pins are giving me a hard time, they don't want to budge. I'm going to try WD40 and try again later. Any other suggestions for pins that don't want to budge? I like your video, and how you showed trimming the strip. Thank you.
appreciate.
Can you help guide me on how I can set up a guide to make a perfect mortise for installing an automatic door bottom with a router or circular saw?
Thanks, What do you do if you put your hand on metal door and its very cold?
I installed a friction fit seal and within days the front side had started warping. What did i do wrong? Should i try to glue or use silicone to hold the front face in place?
Scott, I do enjoy all your video! I was wonderng if you have the video on "garage door weather stripping replacement"? Thank you in advance!
This one might work depending on the style of seal czcams.com/video/xO6KJJz6gTU/video.html
Where in the heck did you find my hammer? I lost that exact hammer last year. I've been looking everywhere for it! Where'd you find it?
Nice vid pal. Perfect. Info I needed. Succinct. You should do a vid about how to make a useful, practical video for all these other long-winded, or, conversely, unclear CZcamsrs that live to hear themselves talk. LOL.
Thanks for the video, my door bottom is neither flat or has the kerf rail like yours. it has a Lip in the outer edge and I notice a metal c clip to the width of the door bottom against the lip. it is missing any rubber insert in it, I searching what rubber insert to be fit there.. any help appreciated
I tried replacing it before watching your video but the tracks don’t fit into the the space the old one was. You mentioned if the door was in good shape it would fit. What can I do to fix that problem?
it looks like the first seal but I am about to find if it has a kerf cut once I rip that "sucker" off.
for the door hinges... you can just put a couple of toothpicks in the hole and use the same screw.
I need to replace a Vinyl Threshold Insert. The channels (?) are 1" apart. Do I need a 1" Vinyl Replacement Threshold Insert or something wider? I don't know if I am supposed to measure the visible portion or count the lips that get inserted in the threshold. (The current insert is too deteriorated to pull out anything to measure the total width. I will have to dig out the pieces in the channels.)
How do you do a "double door" that has the lock mechanism on top and bottom for one side. Working around the rod that goes into the threshold in order to lock in place if not in use. Don't very often open that side, nevertheless I want it sealed around that rod as well.
I have an exterior pre hung door and rain keeps getting in at the bottom. I have the threshold adjusted as high as it will go and water is still coming in under the sweep. It's so tight the sweep is tearing in two places and I know it shouldn't need to be that tight. Any ideas? Also, where did you buy your sweep? Mine has 4 fins, but I like the design of yours better. Thanks!
Can you recommend a white door bottom like the M-D Building Products 43820 Replacement Door Bottom, 35-3/4-Inch, Beige you recommend? Or do you know if the beige is so light that it would look OK on a white door?
0:28 "before we jump into anything," most CZcamsr follows by "hit the subscribe button, like and turn on notification, share the video and leave comments below." Glad that's not you! Thanks for the helpful video!
Can you link to the thing you used as a saw guide?
Sweeps don't stop bugs or insulate very well.
Which one is best to keep water out?
Where do you find the threshold adjusting screws.
What is the solution if you had new hardwood floors installed and the floor is uneven,But your door is true and the door rubs on the hinge side of the door,Can I put a adjustable threshold in.The threshold that’s there now is from the original house and didn’t come with the door.
Does it matter it you have a steel door versus a wood door ? . All of our exterior are steel ( better security ) .
I need to know where can buy this kind of door seal you install please and thank you.
Wish u was local to come and assist
can we get a threshold video please? total replacement and just an adjustable seal replacement
I wish The OEMs made these more user replaceable w/o the need to remove the door, under-designed for something super simple....
Do i still need a curf if my door touches my threshol?
I have a door in my home that appears to be crooked..the previous owners put it up wrong.
How can I fix it?
What kind of screws or nails do you use
No link for the screws I believe but I think they are a #9 if I am correct
Thanks for the reminder. My normal pack is out on Amazon but here is an example amzn.to/3qhysJO little pricey but if you can find #9 locally as you mentioned that will work.
I have fiberglass doors with the channel type strips, but they seem to be different than any other kind out there. The idiot that sold me the doors told me he would drop them off, but going on two years, nothing. I wiped out his contact info and now need to locate these. Any ideas?
Gimme a link to the flooring you got in that room, bro. Thanks.
Oh man, not sure I have a link. It was already in the home when we purchased. Some type of engineered wood.
