Silicone the outer edge before install to keep water out
The weather stripping on my doors have all dry rotted on both the sides and the bottom. My late husband passed away 5 years ago and unfortunately I have no one who even seems to know anything about how to replace them. In my mind it didn't seem like a very difficult task but I didn't know where to start or what to do. I was too hesitant to rip off what was left hanging on them without knowing how to replace them. I have been looking at the sunlight coming in through the crack, feeling the cold air from winter blowing through and now feeling the warm air coming through and my AC going out. I decided that I was going to figure out how to do this myself so I found your video and could kick myself for waiting on someone else to do this for me! I can't thank you enough for taking the time to make this step by step video. Thanks to you not only are my doors secure now but I have confidence in myself that I can do anything I set my mind to do. I just needed the guidance that this video gave me! I'm so very thankful that I was lead here, my late husband never leaves my side ❤
Thank you again for helping me ❤
I am glad you did it!
My philosophy Is, I can do it mess it up and learn, do it again cheaper than hiring someone.
Sorry for your loss, I meet a lot of widows in our plumbing business that have to learn the things the husband took care of. It's great that you are doing it!
Ross
Thank you so much. First time homeowner and I am still a single gal. A handy man quoted me over $700 to replace these. Nope! I knew it couldn’t possibly be that expensive, but I assumed he would have to take the doors off. Wow. I am smarter thanks to you, and I am capable of doing this myself now that I am smarter 🥰🥰🥰
I'm glad it helped. Try the NEXTDOOR website next time you need someone. It's referrals from neighbors, for contractors etc...
$700??? Seriously?
I'm glad you DIY. What an idiot trying to take advantage. I understand as well being a single woman.
People in construction these days have a special place in hell for trying to scam people.
I agree. I’m single too and refuse to pay for repairs. Watching videos like this has helped me tremendously.
If you have a wood door make sure you silicone caulk the outside so that rainwater does not just seep in and sits on the door promoting rot.
That is GREAT advice - thank you!
How would you go about that? I’ve caulked the bottom of a shower and around a sink but not sure how to do it here. Thank you in advance.
Its a channel door sweep, I don't understand where you would be adding the caulking? Along the top edge of the sweep?
@@chef329 it’s a “U” shaped piece. Water will run down the door and into the “U”. Caulk all along where the top of the “U” piece contacts the door.
You can use pca glue to coat it I guess
Thank You , just did the install , keep posting videos .
Thank you, now I know what that’s called and simple to do… knowledge is power!!!
Glad to help!
THANK YOU for posting this! I’ve been sitting on this project for over a year- not sure why, as it only took me 5 minutes to get it done! Our door is lock-tight now!
Fantastic! Love that!!
On behalf of all home repair people, I’ll cast no stones. It’s been 2 months for me, but now it’s done.
Lol took me a month just to Google what that bottom door thing was called 😂

Thank you very much for showing us how to do this. Today I tried sealing my door after seeing water from the rain ... inside the threshold of my home. Don’t like the look one bit, so this week I will have To go to my L.wes orHD and get me one of those door sweep. I appreciate this a lot. Thank you.

Thanks!

Thank you so much. I can do this.
You are so welcome!
Great video. Thanks dude. I had no idea how to replace these for 13 years so just ignored them.
No problem 👍
Thank you! This is a very helpful channel. Just subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks so much for the video and all the details! Yes, it's simple, but now I know what to get, how to get it on the door, when to stop my pre-drilled holes, when to stop drilling in the screws (before dimpling) and how to trim the edge for the correct fit. I would have been guessing at all those factors, or just plain doing it wrong, so while it is a simple fix, you've prepared me to do it correctly! This is so appreciated... especially from this 65 yr old female! (No disrespect to older folks or females!) Thank you so much for sharing this video! Your explanations were extremely helpful! BTW, I have three other exit doors that also need the seals replaced. They're all steel doors, just more narrow. Will the same seal be fine for them as well, or do I need something different from a "front door seal"? Thank you again!
I'm glad you went for it! As far as the seal it should work, I would read in the description on the package. If you got it off amazon you are able to ask the seller of the product questions and they should let you know.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for that. I have to do mine today. Having a little rain leak at my front door.
Glad to help!!
Thanks for your post 👍 I learn something that I did wrong way
Glad to help
Wow
👍
Thank you for this video. Maintenance came to check my door and said "that's just how the door sits and there's nothing we can do". It felt like a wrong answer but I didn't know the right one. Found your video and now know the door seal needs to be replaced. You made it look so easy now I feel like they lied to me and just didn't want to do the work that needed to be done.
Glad it helped
You can always trust a DIY dude with markings on his face. He earned his keep.
True words!
You are awesome! i love your channel please make more😎
More to come! Appreciate it!
I put off replacing my front door seal because I thought I could find an exact replacement. After almost 30 years, I convinced myself, they probably don’t make exact replacements after so many years. Thanks for sharing the video!!
Glad I could help!
30 years?!!!! Lol
Good DIY video. POINTER: Most drills have a torque setting so you don't run the screw too deep.
GREAT reminder! Thanks!
thanks,, got a door to do also, before the cold weather comes in
You bet!!
Thx so much
You're welcome!
Think my door does not have that space. It is a hall door and I think I need to use the adhesive type. Thx.
Good easy job. Only one thing i would change, and that would be using a small block of wood when tapping the new piece in. Causing no damage to material. Nice easy fix..Look forward to your next project..
Thanks Larry, good idea on the wood.
Have a Great Christmas!
Thank you for a great video, my handyman said there's no hope for my back door, That I need a new door but I'm not financially able at this time, because I had new living room and kitchen floors install in today and that hit me pretty heavy. So I'm going to still try to install the new door seal on the bottom of my door like you did hoping it will keep the water from coming in. 🙏
I hope it will work for you!
I’m glad i seen someone who did it without taking the door off
😀👍
I've purchased those sweep seals before from Lowes. They last about 2 years in high traffic areas of the house, then the rubber strips break off.
What's better?
@@RogerPack For ease of installation, definately the sweep seals. But, the right thing is to replace the door seal and jamb.
You got me thinking I could do this myself 🤔 mine has been broken for almost a year and right now flies are driving me crazy. I’m making a trip to Home Depot today.
You can do it!
Thanks so much this is what I was looking because my bottom door is not straight they cut wrong 🙏🙏🙏
Bummer. This should straighten it out.
I needed the same door bottom strip. Menards had the correct replacement strip, cost about $11 and change.
👍
Shrews are starting to come in and I’ve caught one but there are more. I’m almost positive this is how their getting in Lol! It’s always something.
Funny - those pesky things!
wanted to replace door just the door threshold, after seeing this video I see that both needed replacing thanks for easy-to-follow instructions.
You're welcome
Project went great, done in less than two hours
Dope
thanks
Thanks for showing how it’s done. I would have put the screw a in and then cut off the excess because with the screws holding it in place I think it would be easier to cut then chancing knocking down off the door
That would work, it's pretty tight even with out the screws.
Props for saying flat blade screwdriver (correct) rather than flat head screwdriver (common, but wrong).
😄
You should always put the screw in the lowest part of the channel because then later on as it wears you can lower that thing down on the bottom of the door
For someone who is not handy, can you describe that for me? I’m not sure what you mean by the channel in this situation. Thanks.
@@swissmiss221 The "channel" he's referring to is the slot the screw goes in. Instead of having a little round hole for the screw, there is a slot, so you are able to make slight adjustments up or down without drilling a new hole.
I guess if somebody did not leave enough room to adjust it down, they could also use a drill bit or Dremel to lengthen the slot a little.
@@indianapolisindiana7856 Thanks for the explanation
👍
The original seal gasket that fits into the grooves on the bottom of the door are readily available at Lowes and Home Depot. You have to take the door off the hinges, but I think it's a far better seal than the vinyl EZ U-seals.
Wow, I looked there and Home Depot, and they only had this style available when we did the video.
That is the one I got today but to be honest after watching this video, I would rather get one of those. I really don't want to take the door off.
The door is wood though, so would have to find one different than white.
my door is metal and i def don't want to take it off. i am still figuring out how the old rubber is attached.
Thank I need to replace my door ceal too. Now I know how ez it is I will do it this weekend.
Fantastic!!
Dude, you had two sentences and you didn't spell seal properly and felt the need to shorten a 4-letter word down to 2 letters in the second sentence?
Would it have helped to have a wooden block to place between the seal and the hammer whilst hammering?
Great option!
Kirk... You stole my lines!
Clever name. Cause the information is free.
Glad you got it -- we thought it was cleaver!!
Great video. What’s the model number of the new weatherstrip? I’m having trouble finding it at my local Home Depot
Not sure that was a while ago. Sorry
I think they have the stick on type on front door to avoid the lip and screw look. I was kind of wanting to go with that again. Hard to find. But thanks for the tip how to remove old stuck on.
Thanks for watching!
👍
Thanks
I would recommend using a block of wood to drive the seal on and cutting to length JMO
Great suggestion!
