    Your "drafty doors" video just populated into my CZcams, and so I clicked on it. Guess what? I bought those same foam wedges recognizing I needed them, and I do. But I got lazy and didn't install them. You've inspired me two ways. Number 1, I gotta learn how to kick myself in the butt, and number 2, I'm gonna install those weather seals today!! I bought mine online in a package of 12. THUMBS UP!!! (I'll let you kknow how my butt feels later). Hey video listeners, give this guy a THUMBS UP. It takes time for anyone to put a video together for us, the least we can do is THANK HIM for watching out for us, and making our family all the more comfortable. THANKS AGAIN Dr.Ray.

      Yep cold as balls right now where I live, and being a generally un-handy child of the 80s and 90s who grew up playing video games, I had no idea how weather stripping works. Now it's 2024 and I'm sick of my wife and kids complaining about being cold all the time, I decided it's time to fix that obviously drafty front door that is spewing freezing air into my house. This is the video that showed me exactly how to understand weather stripping and how to do it right. This video was crystal clear, very helpful, and fun to watch. Kudos to the video creator for putting in the effort and sharing this. Cheers.... here's to warm homes and properly-installed weather stripping!

    Got my stripping and knew there was something for the corners but couldn't remember what they were called. I have watched many how to videos on replacing the weather stripping and by far yours is more detailed. You showed things I not even once saw in other videos (sept the corners wedges), but not installed the way you did which makes more sense. Thank you for your time in teaching us how to do things. Have a great day :)

    These wedgies work really well. We are old and live in an apt with the patio door in the living room and not a good seal. When the north wind blows you can feel the draft. I knew I couldn’t do the weatherstripping but i could do the wedgies. Had to buy a bunch and spent around $80 on them at HD, but they did the trick. The reason we needed so many is because we aren’t very smart and put them in backwards and had to double up. But we did manage to seal off the draft. It sucks to get old.

      Uggh. Spoke too soon as I get the wind changed direction. I actually believe cold air is leaking in under/past the threshold. I'll try to find some smoke sticks or incense tomorrow to confirm. These are row complexes, so I think they got the worse companies to put in the windows and doors because even the uPVC windows units are drafting.

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Před 5 měsíci +1

      If it's leaking under the threshold usually all you can do is caulk along the edges.
      To fix the windows is a little more involved; especially if they overtightened the mounting screws or installed them crooked.

      This is true of more modern doorways, but there are older doorways that do not have the kerf cut into the door stops. With those, the kerf can be cut in perhaps, but it’s probably easier to replace the door stops with ones that have the weatherstripping already attached (with kerf already cut). Either way expect to do some paint touch up at minimum.

    Since you have the weather-strip newly installed, why do you still need the square piece? Good video, but still don’t understand why it is needed. Also why didn’t you use four squares?

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Před rokem +14

      I used two squares, one on each side at the bottom. I guess because there isn't an overlap of weatherstripping in the bottom corners you need the extra thickness.
      If you shut off the lights inside and look carefully all around the door you'll almost always see daylight in the bottom corners. They usually come two in a package.

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Před 4 měsíci

      Usually when it's sticking near the bottom it's because the top hinge isn't tight enough. Get some 3" screws and replace two of the screws going into the door jamb. Make sure to predrill first.

Any tips to prevent this. I have the little squares but they seem to be made of all black foam not white vinyl like you shown here. They came that way when they were installed new. This is on an exterior shop building that I wouldn’t want to put on storm doors but want to keep the moisture out. Somehow moisture is staying in the foam from snow and driving rain Great explanation and detailed on proper weather stripping .

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Před rokem +5

      You can scrape them off and replace with the ones that have a vinyl coating.
      Check your caulking all around the door frame. Also make sure your door has a drip cap at the top.
      Any rotted wood should be scraped and painted. If it's real bad, patch it with Bondo then paint.

      Yes, it's spray foam but the wrong type.
      The foam is used behind the molding or casing. It fills in the gap between the door jamb and the framing.
      You should only use foam labeled for windows and doors. It's usually white, the yellow stuff is for gaps and cracks and can easily bend a door jamb or window frame.

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Před rokem +1

      First try bending the little tab inside the hole where the door latches to get it to close tighter. Then get a look all the way around to see if the door is warped too bad.
      If your door stop is removable you can take it off and reset it to match the warp in the door. However most door stop on exterior doors isn't removable.
      Your last option is to reset the jamb or replace the door. Both are a lot of work.

    • @stevebabiak6997
      @stevebabiak6997 Před rokem +1

      I second the suggestion to install the door stop to follow the warp in the door; door stops are thin enough that they will flex a bit to help with this situation.
      And if the door stop won’t flex enough, use a saw to cut it into pieces that will better follow the contour of the warp, and install the door stop in pieces. Sharp points on the edges should be trimmed a bit. Then use an oscillating saw to get the kerf at the seams to be able to accept the weatherstripping’s kerf insert - but only at seams where it’s necessary.

      Do the weatherstripping first. Then check the corners to see which ones are leaking.

    How does CZcams know I put up weather stripping every time I close my door. I add it inside because that’s the best I can do. I guess it’s time to call a carpenter. Help.

      Every App knows. Every website you go to drops a tiny file on your computer/phone. They all read the files.
      They also log your location and every WiFi you encounter wether you connect or not.

    You’re supposed to follow the directions of the strip channels in your door is top first then the sides! 👍🏻

    If someone does work like this in your home fire them! Sloppy insulation and foam work.
    Ha ha little touches he boasts!

      The insulation work is not mine. Whoever built the closet did it and I'm not even sure why they put the door into an unfinished space above the garage.
