  • The idea of the old money aesthetic is way overblown. Here's why Succession is a representation of this.

    I think one thing worth mentioning is Kendall's birthday party (where it was mentioned no cameras would be allowed) Kendall wears an Uber flashy $8500 Gucci jacket, with a "rapper chain", so one can assume that is indicative of what he would do if "the optics" werent an issue.

      Yes that’s an excellent point. It also signifies his desperate attempt to ‘look cool and different’ from the rest of his family during a time when he was trying to go against his father. It’s the sort of loud and obnoxious behaviour quite synonymous with ‘new money’.

      Seems like the exact same sorta behaviour as the emerging bourgeois, tryna separate themselves from Aristocracy. Elavate themselves even. Just look at any differences between the Roys and the Pierces. The pierces are old money, they recite Shakespeare, they live in a Chateau out of the city. Where does every Roy live? An apartment. What do they believe in; "Would you like to hear my favourite passage from Shakespeare? Take the fucking money."

    I really think the only reason Succession is so great and worth watching is BECAUSE they’re not old money. Like you said, there’s a certain drive, a hunger that ‘old money’ families don’t usually have when portrayed in media. God I love this show so much.

      The Pierce family would be old money, they have no intention of running the business anymore, they want to see their wealth grow but they are okay with making someone else the CEO like leah and they can take a backseat and do their hobbies

      Exactly. It was really telling how like New Money the Roys were with the Pierces. I liked it when the cruise scandal came out and Logan came out screaming at Nan to stop and that it's a good deal, Nan says that her family will be fine. To Logan, this deal is a lifeline. It is important and will determine if the family has money or not. He worries about deals and money. The Pierces do not struggle with such things. Kendall, Roman, and Shivan all struggle to become the next CEO.
      The Pierce children and family concern themselves with earning two Ph. D.s and working at elite institutions like the Brookings Institute. For the Pierces, they have had the money for generations and are not stuck in the rat race like the Roy family is. They have already made it and will continue to do just fine for generations to come. That is why they focus on the arts, culture, education, and other non-money-generating pursuits because to them they have always had money. They are not the Roys, whose wealth was built by Logan. He despises these people because growing up, he did not have money. He was sent away to boarding school and probably was made fun of due to his lack of wealth. He has now achieved money, but is always concerned with it fading. These are the problems that first-generation households deal with. The Pierces are comfortable in their palaces and have been around wealth for many many generations, so it is nothing to them whether a deal with the Roys goes through or not. They are solid old money wealth, the Roys have a precariously built empire that can be done away with in a week

    Well yeah. You gotta think about how these kids grew up - they played inside the office, surrounded by people in suits and ‘the help’, they essentially dress like office workers. Pierces house and outfits are testament to that, because they dress in leisurely, if not old-fashioned, clothes and their couches look grandma in the highest degree, and Roys dress like a mannequin inside a Barneys and live inside a cb2 showroom. Its not any worse or better, it’s just different.

    I've never watch this show. But heard the hype. I've seen clips here & there on CZcams. And catch on quickly who are the characters. This series is the Gilded Age. But in modern time. It's definitely new money. But with old money problems. This show also reminds of the TV series Pose on FX. If the characters weren't gay. You get the Roy children. 😅

    What?? Logan was poor and the reason why he wanted to buy the other media company is because it’s legacy company. Which would give him a more than first generation money feeling.

    succession never implied that it was ever old money

    • @blancc.
      @blancc.  Před 8 měsíci +22

      Yes you're right, hence my point that many on the internet treating their overall aesthetic as such and making a whole trend out of it when the show has never presented it that way.

    • @colechapman6976
      @colechapman6976 Před 7 měsíci +9

      Succession did imply in a few ways. Logan married a noblewoman from England simply to get her pedigree and status. His children say they have to put that new money up to the light, because they don't trust new money companies, while being new money themselves. They buy old estates, wear old money clothing, and pretend to have a long line of wealth while their dad's money was made in one generation. I think they like to think they are old money, and they disdain the "parochial" "striving" middle-class folks like Tom because they see them as pitiful. Shiv herself said that Tom was "parochial" and used her as a "ladder." Clearly remarking how she sees herself as the established powerful family, and Tom as a social climber. She sees herself as already landed, an aristocrat. Logan hated the Pierces as they were the real old money. While he was penniless, they already lived in a palace. Pierce's were called "blue-blooded fucks," indicating that they are generational wealth. That is why they could never really get along. Logan wants desperately to appear old money. He buys medals from soldiers, he buys estates, he wears tweed jackets and wool long sleeve polo shirts. He wants that status, but he never can achieve that as his wealth will probablybe gone by the second or third generation

      @@colechapman6976This sheds so much light on why Logan's pile was never big enough for him. This show keeps on giving.
