- After brushing off stomach pain for months, JJ was eventually diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer at 27. After going through 6 rounds of chemo and surgery, he started to feel pain once again in his stomach. His cancer then came back as terminal, stage 4. Since his diagnosis, he’s tried 5 different chemotherapy regimens, but they were all unsuccessful. Doctors then told him, he had two options: hospice and dying or trying a clinical trial.
JJ then joined a clinical trial and it has kept his cancer from spreading further, beating the 25% odds of surviving past 5 years after diagnosis. In this conversation, JJ shares the reality of being on lifelong chemotherapy, finding mental health support, starting his advocacy journey, and the importance of listening to your body.

It is brave patients like this young man, who push through and endure years of agony to be a 'guinea pig" and do clinical trials. It's those clinical trials where the researchers can fine tune these medications so others can survive. Thank you sir.
This brings such intense feelings, my husband passed of stage 4. They gave him 2yrs he fought thru 61/2 yrs of continuous chemo cycles, but for many of those yrs he was just the shell of the person he was. Chemo til the end was his choice, im not sure I’d make that decision for myself today. Forever living inside my Heart ♥️

I'm almost 100% sure chemo isn't for me. My CRC treatment is going to be radiation and surgery, otherwise I'm going to focus on taking care of my family by giving them lasting memories of the person I was, energetic, full of life and compassion. I don't want those I love to remember me as a cancer patient or a sick husk of a person in bed, machines whirring in the background.
I lost my partner as well 4 years ago, of a cardiac arrest, he was 28… It was very sudden. And no cardiac issues whatsoever. We don’t know why he died…
I sometimes wonder what’s worse. To know they’re going to die, or for them to die suddenly without a warning…
Anyway. He will live in your heart for ever, like my boyfriend is going to live in mine for ever as well.

I'm stage IV metastatic breast cancer. Went to my vertebra, a rib on the left side, and a tumor on my coxi. My metastatic was found in 2020, before New years, I just found out it spread more to the L4, so it literally is all over my vertebra. This coming Monday, I'm getting an MRI done, and I have a new pain on my lower back. I can't hardly walk, bend, that's my lumbar spine, where I feel all my movements and the pain is horrible. When you mentioned pain, I definitely relate. Is tuff living with pain but is worth living right. Let's see what my docs find this time. I find myself crying a lot. I understand when you say you feel lonely even though there's a million people texting and sharing their own hardships. I don't meet in presence with a support group. There's none around here. I sometimes share my feelings with an online community group of metastatic patients like me. I totally get that when you don't even have the strength to grab the phone, I get like that, too. Never thought of not wanting to be here, no thoughts of suicide. My faith is strong. Honestly, God gives me the strength I need to go on. Keep up the amazing effort you're doing. Your story is very inspiring. It gives me hope. I want to tell you that you have a long road ahead. Enjoy this life. Do all the fun things you like, travel, and even build a family. Fellow survivor here, Stage 4 B-cell lymphoma. You are a fighter, sir. I hear you on the need to watch out for your mental health, and wish I had done a better job early on. But, I have become a believer in that the best time to get support for your cancer journey is when it starts, but the second best time is today. I understand you. I was on TPN for 5 years. I will remember you. My Mom had colon cancer then breast cancer. I am thankful you shared your story, as someone who dealt with cancer I can relate to so much you have shared. I'm so very proud of you I can't even put it into words, you are the definition of a true fighter. I can't imagine the physical and mental pain of dealing with all the chemo you did, you gave yourself the greatest gift by reaching out for your mental well being. I put therapy off myself even though I was struggling, I couldent wrap my head around one more appointment during treatment, bad on my part but I did finially begin therapy about 2 months ago and it's the best thing I could have done. I so admire you young man, your strength is amazing. I have stage 3 CRC, your story has convinced me to have immunotherapy, being 70 yrs old, I couldn’t imagine having side effects that’s so horrible, yet if it works I might be out of pain. The pain is unbearable at times, I just don’t care to prolong it. If it weren’t for children and grands, your testimonial I wouldn’t do it. Their little faces break my heart, the thought of me passing, I will fight. Gods Will be done either way. I’ll go with palliative care, and fight fight fight for this life I was gifted with.

Your story has really inspired me and it pushes me to speak out for my health issues. I was working full time at Mayo Clinic on the chemo floor. I loved my job so much but one day my life just took a complete turn around. I had to step down from my position because of upper GI pain and blood in my stools. I had a upper GI scope and was told I had a sever case of inflammation and gastritis but it’s been 6 months and still know relief from this pain. I am a firm believer in the Lord and this is where out hope and strength comes from. God is our healer put all your faith and trust in the Lord. God bless you!! Much Love!!
I got same symptoms for 2 years and still going i went to nany times to the doctor and got checked they said gastritis and enlarge prostate this situation has been a nightmare to me i eat healthy and exercised everyday all my life i dont understand why this is happening to me 😅 for the last 2 days ive seen red blood in my stool hopefully is from hemorrhoids. I have never felt this hopeless in my life i can't imagine how JJ has felt for the last 5 years 💔 god damn it life its cruel

I’m happy and feel good to see that you joined the men’s group and are visible person in and helping other people and getting support for yourself. And I think you are a most attractive and energetics young man and you should be proud of all that you achieved in your sports in college and everything in your life. I don't know how you do it! You're amazing JJ. - I was just diagnosed yesterday with Pulmonary Metastatic Disease. The Dr just called to expedite "The Journey." I'm being referred to the Pulmonology Dept, and from there, based on the consultation, it will be decided if I have to be referred to the Radiation Dept. I'm scared, yet I see all you survivors and realize I've got to get over being the "Baby Princess" realizing that there is the possibility of being like the rest of you who have gone through this cancer journey.

Ive got stage 4 bowel been on chemo since Jan 23. It is draining you just keep soldiering on left in limbo and waiting for that ct scan where they say its moved to here,here and here.
