Just want to say thank you. I am 600 miles from home with a camper on the truck and pulling a trailer. I stopped at the Salton Sea in California to go kayaking at sunset and afterwards the truck would crank but no start. I found your video and went through the list. The Injector Pressure Regulator coil measured at 400k ohms and it should be about 10 ohms. I slept right there and this morning I used my dual sport motorcycle to go to Napa, 22 miles away. They had a new Napa brand IPR in stock (for the bargain price of only $360). I swapped in the new coil and she started right up. I'm about to chooch home but had to thank you first.

Clint, I used reverse Physcalogy on the wife to get the approval to fix up my 2000 F-250 Ole Big Blue... told her the old truck, which I love, needed $5 grand in service work, of course I got a NO!... So I brought home a 2022 F-250 on a test drive and she seen the $84K price tag and said 'Take it back and fix your old dam truck :) Money problem solved 😎

@@richardc7721 Yeah, my wife's likes her old stuff too... guess after 36 years of marriage I'm a Keeper :) She hates car or truck payments and, well Big Blue is paid off. I actually drove a 1971 2 door LTD from 1984 till 1998! I also back in the Day, drove OTR with Real trucks last one was 1978 Peterbuit 379 w/ 440 Cummins and an 18 speed, What we used to call a 'Large Car' :)
The 99' to 02' 7.3 Super Duty is the Best truck made! 1968 to 1972 F-Series is hard to beat! SDs Kinda pain to work on which is rare if you take care them. I got International A/C injectors installed in 2003 with all Banks parts, intercooler, strait thru exhaust... and that increased my fuel mileage from 12 to 18mpgs! All these diesels with emissions-DEF crap takes the life out of very expensive motors.

@@richardc7721 Sorry to hear the issues with the 2012! That sucks... The 6.7 is a great motor... only if it's been EGR Deleted! And always have a good source of Diesel.
I have always used Cumins Power Service to keep the fuel system clean as well as a good Cetane booster!
So who has the Lariat trim?? The Wife or on the F450?? 2 years ago I ran TS6 chip with custom tunes for my BTS transmission. Which made it a completely better truck. But I had a problem with it on a intermittent issue which felt like dropping 1/2 the cylinders.
I had previously had the L. Valve cover off and fixed a bad plug connection so I was familiar with that issue. Being in south texas for the winter I found a old farm shop that was able to read the 7.3 codes. It took a while but after removing the chip the problem was gone along with the needed HP to pull our 5th wheel.
BTS programed a new chip and sent it to me at no charge .
Before heading south i decided to replace the valve cover gaskets and wire harness this year . Even though the truck was running good . The harness plug was loose under the R. valve . And also replaced the glow plugs. Money well spent.
You talked about replace all the sensors, I wish some reputable business had a package with all the sensors at a reasonable price. I've replaced the ICP sensor so I know they are expensive.
    On a 01 7.3 ,186k miles.
Thanks again for the great info.

I bought a 97 that supposedly ran out of fuel and sat for many years as it was running and died, started back up and went a block and never ran again. When I got it. I put new batteries in it, was cranking it over to get fuel up and the IDM blew up so I bought another one, ran the scanner on it and the injectors cycled. The hvop reservoir was empty so I filled it up and it drained immediately, I'm not getting oil into reservoir from lpop even after cranking several times, haven't checked the check valve yet but suspect injectors might need rebuilt one I get oil into the hvop. Your videos are a great source of information as I'm an ASE Master tech, not real familiar with the 7.3 other than is over built for passenger trucks. Mine has 275000 miles on it and going to get a million more out of it.

High Clint. I came across your site not too long ago and am loving the info you put out. I feel that you don't talk the bs that other sites I have seen (like the shady Mechanics you have said). Anyway, my wife and I are looking around on FB marketplace to get a truck that people say won't start and they don't have the time to trouble shoot. I am a Disabled Vet and My wife is Going to school to become a certified Heavy diesel mechanic because that is what she was when she was in the Navy. For we want to start up a mobile diesel repair to help out the loggers and farmers where we live and help other, we want to get one of the 7.3 Trucks and get it fixed and either flip it or give to our son for he is going to become an electrician and will want a service truck. So, buy watching this video we nowhere to start and not go from b to z to a trouble shooting. So, keep the videos coming so we can learn and like you said be able to stuff yourself like you always say and not rely on someone else doing it for you. Now for my wife and I to get money put together and find a truck and get it fixed. You have a great day. and we will do the same. Sincerely Brad and Becky

Well, I was just talking with my sister. they have a 2000 f 550 with the 7.3l. My brother-in-law and sister say they are having run ability issues with it and other stuff. They said they want us to work on it and my sister says she wants to get rid of it because they have hardly used in it in the last two years. So, it looks like we have our vehicle, and we will turn that into our mobile repair vehicle my sister just wants to really get it off her insurance for it mainly just sits and does nothing. We will go over it with a fine-tooth comb and do all the checks you say to do Clint and replace what needs to be changed. Again, keep up the excellent videos and we will keep you apprised on our adventure. Thanks for your time. And always to everyone who reads this have a great day and stay safe. 1 1/8 inch socket for ICP sensor. 10mm short and deep sockets for the pcm. Idm and engine harness. 13 mm short socket and deep socket for valve cover bolts and studs, starter relay. Odb2 adapter paired with torque pro. 8 mm for the injector hold down bolts. Car Guage pro for pcm idm tests torque pro can't do. One thing I would recommend is using an old valve cover gasket connector and splice them into test terminals you can hook a voltmeter up to in order to test the resistance of all the injector solenoids and glow plugs. Just ensure the gasket is good to go or else it'll throw off readings. 1 inch deep socket with 4 inch extension 1/2 in ratchet for manually turning crank.
For compression testing you can remove the glow plug for either cylinder and find something with a 5/16 thread and a 10mm nut like a brass plumbing fitting that connects to a vacuum gauge for compression testing since the glow plug goes in the top of the cylinder/head. For fuel pressure you can buy a 1/8 npt fitting from riffraff or Amazon for gauging fuel easily from the bowl.

I’m at a loss for things to check I have a 2000/7.3 that was removed to repair a broken bolt in the water pump, don’t ask I didn’t uninstall the engine I can’t get the engine to start I did all your checks and no start. New fuel pump & batteries glow plugs ok oil in HPOP IPC IS New disconnected still no start I have no scanner to check HPOP out put. Is it possible the LPOP lost its prime and can I remove the OP sending unit and pump oil in to prime the oil pump. Also the starter seems not to crank as fast as the videos I’ve watched. I’d hate to replace the IPM if it’s not bad. I’m an GM wrench and worked on many GM Diesels I rebuilt many standing injection pumps I’m pretty handy with a wrench and hate to replace parts not needed but I’m at my whits end any suggestions would be appreciated also I disconnected glow plugs and tried WD40 we started GM diesels with WD and tried some either and it doesn’t even fire I’m lost can you advise. majority of what is talked about will apply to a 6.0 you have the added benefit of monitoring a lot more PIDs on that year with a good scan tool

Thanks for another great video. I fought through many issues with the hard/no start. The starter just sounded weak. A new starter, powermaster, did the trick. The truck started an ran well. BUT about 2 weeks later; Got in, turned the key, all the lights illuminated, normal, Turned to start and nothing, everything went dark. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for your 7.3 videos! I’m experiencing a problem with mine that has me baffled. This is a 2002 model f450 with only 5800 miles. Obviously bin sitting much of its life. The problem is when cranking for start hpop doesn’t build for 6 to 8 seconds. According to the scan gauge I have connected. Will the ipr pid today too determine its position through this scenario. This is regardless of ambient or engine temp. It then builds pressure starts and runs normally . The crank rpm seems normal. I checked the oil level in the reserve chamber and it remains full. Would a ipr or hpo sensor cause this problem? They are next on my list but I wanted to check first before throwing additional parts at it. Btw the oil is fresh 15/40.
    Thanks

I have a question for you sir, I am fighting a crank no start with a constant check engine light. At the end of the buzz test the SES light turns off until the key is recycled. What can this be an indication of? I do not have rpm on dash and have verified continuity with cps, and pcm to IDM. New IDM as well

My 2001 f350 was running fine my son drove it to work and home he parked it in the driveway and went in the house for about 2 hours went back out to leave and truck hasn't started since. My hpop ipr was still plugged in and wire at plug is good. My tach isn't moving during cranking so I replaced the cam position sensor. Still no start I drive a big truck and had to leave so I still don't know what the deal is. Worst part is it drove home fine and just didn't start again. And I unplugged the icp and it didn't crank.

Howdy. I’m at my wits ends on my 2002 7.3. Monday I was partially gelled from this weather we’ve been having but it would start just rough idled. I have additive and rescue in the tank. At one point it just died and wouldn’t start again. I pulled the fuel filter and it was wasn’t gelled but to be safe I added some rescue to the filter housing. Checked oil and my HPOP and it was a inch below the opening. From there I also replaced the ICP sensor sense the plug was covered in oil. I also replaced the crank shaft positions sensor just to be safe. It won’t even start with a little squirt of ether in the intake. I’ve got no smoke at all, I checked all my fuses and pulled my tunner off the pcm. Still nothing. Is it possible that my injector tips are gelled? I recently just put $2500 in to the glow plugs and oil color and some other small things. I don’t have the cash to send it back to a shop

I've run into the same exact situation on trucks with jell up They all needed new fuel pumps With out me being in front of your truck with test equipment this is the best i can guide you also plug it in for the block heater so any air that got into the oil system can purge its self out and double check all your work previous so you didn't leave some thing unplugged or the like from frustration

wires are backwards or a slight ground contact some where in the wire harness, trying a completely different part distributor also, Where you are getting it from could have a complete bad batch run or the clap is to tight I've seen this also

Well I gone through many of your videos. Had a 7.3 spose to be a good runner that i swapped out. Started out it didn't have hpop pressure changed IPR and had IPC error so changed it and got 2700 psi. Made sure i had fuel filling my bowl rapidly. Used forscan app to check everything from my fuses, rpms, voltage drop starting, hpop pressure, no codes, ebpv pressure, no injector leaks cranking it. Just got white smoke and didn't sound like it was going to start. Was at what else can I do? I didn't pull the idm. Figure i would try doing compression test and if i did it correctly the engine must be bad. Had a cylinder that was at 150. Most were 200 and a cylinder at 300. So I assume it needs a overhaul. I read pressure should be around 400 psi.
