Buzz Saw From PTO to Flat Belt

  • This buzz saw was designed for the little Fergusons and the Ford N-series tractors with the rear mount pto right angle drive. It had been previously converted for use with any standard category 1 three point and tractor that had their own rear mount right angle drive. A breakdown of the tractor this was converted for necessitated a 're-conversion' to make it operate as a stand alone buzz saw powered by any machine by means of a flat belt.
    Sound counter productive..?? Not really. We have plenty of tractors that can serve as the power unit but at the time, only one to operate it as a three point. The simple answer to get this thing back in the wood pile down at my son's house was to do what we did...make it a totally stand alone saw.
    The trick however, was to make it easily adaptable for use one way to the other. So the part fabricated in the video assembles in minutes by means of two bolts that thread into nuts that are welded in place. One wrench and three minutes.... you are good to go. Just that quick. But it HAD to be made heavy to sustain the pull of a tractor to maintain belt tension.
    Suffice it to say that besides the blade being embarrassingly dull and the inconsistent running and flopping of the too old of a belt the operation was a success. At least to me...the guy fitted with the untrained eye it is. All you engineering types are probably suffering from all the forehead slaps you've endured IF you hung in long enough to see the whole design come together. No matter...don't let your brain or your nerves suffer too much because I've done much more dangerous things than this....like forgetting special days the Missus is convinced should be burned into my memory like an indelible marker on a thousand dollar wedding dress...or one from the Dollar Tree thrift store for that matter. Yeah, using a belt dressing stick near a huge pulley flying around in a circle powered by a massive gasoline engine is nothing compared to that particular wrath !!
    Seriously, for you folks not familiar with the mechanics of farm equipment, the 'leaving' side of the pulley the belt is pushing your hands AWAY from the danger....so the tractor is looking out for your safety....its up to YOU to not apply the belt dressing on the 'incoming' side of the pulley....where the tractor becomes an angry beast just looking for a pair of wrists and arms to break in several places.
    As always, do NOT do the things I do in the manner in which I do them. But if you do, please have adequate health and life insurance coverage...you may need one or the other. #outdoors, #buzzsaw, #massey

      It's pretty well dialed in now Jimmy. I stopped and filed the blade and it made a good bit of a difference, but the belt is still pretty stiff. Unfortunately its not used too frequently and the belt stays rolled up tight and covered to keep rain water off of it. Thanks for the visit and don't be a stranger....

      Actually Martin I prefer one of either kind that is being run by the son and son in law which allows me to sit in the shade with a cuppa coffee !! LOL. This was a bit of 'conversion therapy' that was temporarily required due to a breakdown of the tractor that normally runs this rig in 3 point mounted form. It was easier to convert the saw to be used on ten other tractors than is was to make the repairs to the failed one. To prove my point I still haven't had the time to order the parts for it yet !!

Sears sure had a good thing going for a long time and their catalogs provided many an outhouse read and necessary clean ups with old pages. Yessir, thank you Tom. It needs to be sturdy because of the weight of the tractor tensioning the belt, of course. I sure don't want it collapsing OR tipping up from the back side where I'm sawing. LOL That'd give me a bad day for sure. I'm not too concerned about getting caught in the belt or a rotting pto, but a lot of time people like to warn of impending danger. Most of my regular viewers are used to my shenanigans and don't say much. LOL Layla was totally recovered within a month of the video and her training is going quite well.

    Hi Wendell
    The belt is running good for being that old. The loading appears to have helped iron out the kinks.
    When I was a kid I use to go out to a buddies Grandparents in the summer. Irving Smith had a Farmall H with the buzz saw mounted to the front of the tractor. It tipped up and back to loosen the belt so it could be driven around the farm.
    I still have the Ford PTO sitting in the garage.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před rokem

      Its not as kinky as it was when we started and a couple guys suggested a little brake fluid. I will add some of that to the mix next time out. We had the same basic setup as you described on the Farmall H on our 101 Jr Massey Harris. Tilt up, hook with a chain loop and drive off. Lowering it automatically tightened the belt just like you said. Well, keep the pto drive in case another Dearborn or Ferguson buzz saw comes your way. I still don't have one...which is why I had to adapt it the first time to the 3 point category 1 setup.

  • @CAROLDDISCOVER-FINDER2525

    We use that belt dressing on the old John Deere. You know for the belt driving the hydraulic pump. That stuff seemed to last forever. I don't remember where I thought of that but I got another stick of it somewhere. Used it on my drive deck belts from my mower. Get this it was a little tractor 🚜 that was just an overgrown lawn mower. A 6 ft deck on it. I think the deck is gone but I had some plows things like that for it. Darn thing even has cigarette lighter in it. I had two of these manufacturers still got them in the barn. 100 Old Montgomery Ward's and the other one's a Sears. Don't laugh either one of them because they're built a little tractor Just not a lawn mower. Shaped kind of like a little Ford tractor as far as a rear end. Remember neighbor came by and he smoked a little bit and I kind of stay away from that stuff. Hey did The smokers oh crap hand movements raypad themselves down because I can't find the cigarette lighter. So I just tapped it in and thing popped out and I said here you go. He was amazing so was I thing actually worked. I used to have a little cigarette lighter plug in type spotlight. A joke by today's standards. But came in handy when I wanted to mow that yard in the city at night. With that 6 foot deck it took no time at all. I got a couple of David Bradley's and some David Bradley knockoff to. I got a sickle bar in the front of one of those David Bradley's. Well like you I found something to say. Hope some of this finds interesting to you..

No cigarette lighter though on any of them....except when one of 'em goes to backfiring and blowing flames out the pipe. Not advisable if you've got a big ol bushy beard !!

There are walk-behind item that balance on two tractor tires kind of like back tires of a Ford tractor but much smaller. Is that what you're talkin about? The off-brand name may be very famous for all I know I don't remember the name of it but it looks like a David Bradley but it's not. I have three of them. One David Bradley one off-brand and the third one is the same as one of the two first ones but I don't remember. By the way if you want to collect a few more I am going to sell them. Be the first time they've been out of family in about 50 to 70 years. Fast forward to about 2:25 on this one to see what I do with these blades: czcams.com/video/ezvZ7u8jUwE/video.html Right or wrong, it's the way I learned from my dad in the '50's. I don't run a negative tooth angle like so many do, then file the backsides of the teeth. I do a positive angle and sharpen the cutting edge only.

    I have 3 blades for my saw. They are getting really hard to come by.

      Yes they are Gary. That's why when I find one at a yard sale or antique shop or FB marketplace that's priced half way decently I jump on them. But I also inspect for hairline fractures at the bottom of the gullets though !! I have a few spares right not that need a good servicing. But I'm always looking for another. (-;

      Aw heck yeah man...good ear !! South of St Louis a little and right off the Mississippi. I've been a K-SHE listener for 45 years or more. When they were in Crestwood in the little box of a building I had to repair their a/c unit one evening and the DJ was talking to me live on air through the window. LOL I don't remember who it was. I also serviced the a/c's at the company that printed all their bumper stickers so I had access to all the 'discards' in the dumpster. Funny stuff.

    I can't see any issue applying the dressing to the leaving side unless your coat gets heavily bound up in the lacing somehow,.

      Yeah, that wouldn't be a good thing at all. LOL That's why I wear raggedy clothes...they'll just rip and tear off leaving my arms and legs attached to my body. LOL I know, I shouldn't be so cavilier about the dangers surrounding a saw rig. But hey, that's just me. (-;

      @@tractorman4461 You clearly know the capabilities of the systems you're working with. I can tell you're rarely, if ever, taking a serious risk. Taking the little risks is what keeps a good attentive head on a man lol, at least that's what I tell myself..

    What if you put some break fluid on that belt would that help any?

      You know, I just don't know but the next time I have it in use I will give it a shot. Anything to soften it would be grand !! I don't get to use this too often because I don't get a tremendous amount of pole wood. But I DO get a lot of sawmill slabs.

    So the old vandalized ford didn’t work out for your son ??

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  Před rokem +1

      We ran the 800 for thirty years after the repairs to cover the vandalizing. But it had eventually developed some ignition issues and I got that all sorted out a year or two ago. Then I was running the buzz saw on it with the SIL and all was good until the water pump broke at the shaft and took the fan blade through the radiator. So it is temporarily retired and put in the line for more repairs....radiator, fan blade and water pump. I really like that old 800 so its only down for the count, not totally discounted....yet. LOL In the meantime we got the 2000 Ford set up and down at the son's house for working in the woods and working the deer plots. We just don't use it on the buzz saw.
