- In this video, I will be reviewing rare violins I found on eBay for affordable prices. I will also share some important tips on how to find a good violin and test its quality.
Go practice. - Zábava
My mom used to be a violin player (well, fiddle). She passed away when I was a teenager (13 years ago). My brother is getting married and had asked me to play our mom's violin for his wedding, so I've been taking violin lessons. I've been practicing like my life depended on it and I'd like to think I got pretty good at it. Today, I was asking questions to my teacher about improving my sound because it sounds so thin and airy. I received the bad news that her violin is an older and cheap violin, so my sound is pretty well as close to best as it can get.
Doesn't matter how cheap, it was your.mothers, it is invaluable. Violins are like pizza, I think - even the bad ones are still able to make you happy.
@@rickyanthony It definitely does. I played the violin at the wedding and there were lots of tears (happy & emotional). After the wedding, I was left with the question, now what? After long and hard thinking, I decided to join one of the community orchestras with her violin. I don't care. 😁 I'm not looking to become a professional soloist. I love that violin.
I don't think the violin quality is the important thing but rather the fact of 'IT' being played by 'YOU' at the wedding. I'm assuming that the wedding has been and I hope you got over your nerves and played 'her' violin for your brother on his big day. Good on yer, bloke/lassie. Mark, - Australia.
When I got my current violin, which was years ago, it had a beautiful warm sound. The shop changed out the strings to cheaper student strings, since I had only been playing for year; while doing this the sound post fell out and either was already cracked or cracked from the fall. They put it back in, but my violin has never had that warm sound again. I really should get a new one put in.
you mean when you buy a violin the strings don't come with it? the strings you played it with when you tried it out are not part of the package?
Nice video! I love how you demystify the violin buying process through a fun video!
Love this channel, very informal and entertaining video. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much! Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss a video:)
Far better to get along to a specialist string dealer. They will have a wide choice of honest trade fiddles in this price range. They will also have a choice of decent new Chinese or Eastern European instruments. And everything should be properly set up - which makes a HUGE difference to playability and tone. If you really can't get to the shop, they will often mail instruments on approval.
Do more of these please! I wonder these violins have their own uniqueness.
Awesome video! I'm curious what songs you liked to play during your first year or two of learning Violin. I know it's mostly etudes at that point still.
@ViolinMechanic thanks for the nice video! I am really curious of what you think on buying a new instrument from a master luthier compared to searching for an old used instrument. Given of course that the woods are aged for a proper amount of time, say more than 30 years.
I thought the first eBay violin sounded wonderful and also had a powerful sound on the G string, and the E string had a lovely ringing sound. Far superior to the 2nd violin, which had a sound without any depth. I would say the first violin would easily suit an advanced student. You got a great deal there.👍.
I wonder how they would sound with high calibre strings.
I'd love to hear the violin set up with the strings Heifetz used. Covered gut, G string, A and D plain gut, and I think he got his E strings from Germany.
Has the sound post been moved in either of these before playing? I would have had them tuned up first.
The first one has good sound.. I think if you play more with it, it's gonna sound better and better. Probably
Fiddlershop sells amazing affordable violins for startup players that sounds great, helps with technique early and doesn't cost an arn and a leg. Greatest mistake anyone can make is buying a cheap violin because "aw I'm just starting out and when I'm better I'll buy a more expensive one". The damage a cheap violin does to your learning the violin properly is horrendous. Fiddlershop also has a CZcams channel where they will play you a short clip of any on the violins on their shop if you request it.
Awesome Video tho!
Sorry for the rant =D
They really do source good violins for the price. I bought a soloist and was a little disappointed at first, but over the years, the sound started to open up, as well had the bridge and soundpost replaced by a local luthier. He did mention the graduations were rather thick. Happier with it now, sounds much better and more controllable.
2 qs--
Whyavoid antiques. Ilisened to a lot of ebay violins up to $2000 all old Vs, and above about $1000 they all sound better than the fiddlerman newbies up to about $2500. Antique $1500 and up sound much superior.
2nd would listening on line on ebay ewith good violinist playing instrument Be enough to evaluate sound quality?
I definitely have to upgrade soon. My current violin costs about ₹30,000 (375 USD) and I’ll have to get a much better one, that’ll probably cost ₹1-1.5 Lakhs (2000 USD)
To me, the first violin had a much richer sound. The second one definitely sounded less confident(?) - didn't speak as much. If we were to judge this on solely looks, the second one wins, though. I think the looks of the violin is third only to comfortability and (obviously) sound/response.
Looks can be deceiving haha
They both sound nice to me! What you are hearing is not what comes across in the recording. The "thin, airy" sound on the second violin that you mentioned sounds very sweet and old to me.
The microphone sometimes does not pick up these little subtleties, but I’m pretty happy with the price I got them at. They were worth it!
@@ViolinMechanic Definitely worth it! :-)
Ating video. I play viola and violin and am awaiting my ebay purchase. Could be your violin needs a sound post adjustment also it may be that if those instruments are truly as old as described they may have sat for many years in a violin shop and just simply need consistent playing on them to kind of re brake in. Also ive been using the d addario heliocore strings theyre steel yes but they dont brake the budget ring well and last libger than 6 weeks so new strings may simply liven those violins up. Good luck with your fiddles. Nice playing.
Thanks appreciate the feedback! Hope your violin is gonna be good quality!
@@ViolinMechanic well youre not going to believe this but so far all signs are pointing to the violin I'm getting being an actual lupot. So far all the tell tell signs and signatures of his build are showing up in the build itself like whalebone perfling and certain etching features that only he did. If its a true lupot it should be an extraordinary violin a buddy of.mine borrowed a lupot from his teacher in the emerson quartet and we.played a mozart duet for his recital back in the 90s. It was a fantastic violin so of this one is anywhere near that one I'll be good! Im working on Beethovens first violin sonata. I love beethoven!
I'll never play the violin but I will keep watching your videos.
Thanks! Means the world!
I noticed a lot of duds on EBAY. If it didn't sound good, poorly refinished goes on EBAY, or strings part removed (on purpose). Also people are putting fake Dominants on everything.
How much cost price
Play the cadenza
It sound like the soundpost on the second violin is to tight or that there is some tension on the top that makes the wood resonate less. I think both instrumen have a bigger potensial than this . I have bought many wreck instrumen over the years and fiks them glued a lot of cracks and some times when I recognise why there is less sound than expected .... that is sometimes the top does not fit 100 % to the rest and is forced on the rest of the violin..... that makes tension..... almost like a mute on the wood...... Its posible to fix and I normaly sell those violin at cost price to yong violin students.... its normaly a lot bether than a chip factory violin and many time I find those wrecks on markeds for less than 100 US Dollars. and make em in good shape for about 300 US Dollars.
wow some of these are INTERESTING
First
It’s a Chinese violin not at all made in the 18th century.

??
the ebay violin sounds better than your expensive one.
