    There are so few artists like you. The pride. The craftsmanship. The “Can do,” attitude. Just awesome. I could watch for hours on end, but I WILL NEVER be able to do what you do. I teach people how to flip houses. Been doing it for years. You should consider a bootcamp for folks who want to learn how to be better Carpenters. I’d pay $$$ for that! God bless.

    I very much agree with many of your opinions on carpentry. I've worked on some amazing projects as a trim carpenter (a LEGENDARY TRIM CARPENTER in my own mind). I hate wainscot laid over drywall and I've been pressured to let the painters take care of the final sanding (in other words- fix my sloppy work.). I could never do it. Why? Because I love my work. And the true essence of that is in all the tiny details. Anyone can slap wood together. But only a true craftsman understands Craftsmanship.
    Anyway...This is a great design- nicely executed. I appreciate the way you hid the butt joints in the mdf panel. Glad I stumbled upon your channel.

    Your comment about the painters covering up crappy work is so true. I always try to finish my work as if the home owner is going to be the painter. Taking an extra 10 minutes will get you an extra $20.

    I wish I had come across this during work on a past project of mine. Our firm replicated wainscotting our client had existing in a church in florida for sound diffusing panels in the balcony that was almost this exact pattern. They ultimately went for an off the shelf component because they could not find a millwork partner willing to take on the project. Nice to see that something like this can be completed!

    Being a paint contractor myself, i have to praise this mans mentality. i wish there was more carpenters like yourself in my area.. having a painter fix all woodwork mistakes and not being able to explain to the client that we have to charge extra for the extra prep as opposed to "standard prep" and in return us having to eat the cost of labor only because "it is our job" to do so is so annoying.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  Před 6 lety +1

      I'm pushing 15 years now most of which was in CA. I've been in CO for almost 3 years now. What area of the state are you in? I realized early on that there was two ways to compete, lower price, or higher quality work + better service. I need to charge a little more, but my clients don't seem to mind. This approach has set me apart from others. I'm no business man and I don't know if I'm running my business in the best way possible, but I have really enjoyed doing higher quality work. I clean up from time to time, in the summer most of the dust is blown out the doors as we live in a windy area. Thank you!

    Great design and technic!!!! Question: I am looking into getting a table saw to do finish carpentry as home improvement / hobbist. Do you think a contractor table saw would be ok or would it need to be one of the hybrid table saw to get the precision? I have limited work space. So, i am figuring out a good balance. Thanks in advance.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  Před 6 lety

      I owned a Powermatic model 64A contractor saw before my current model 66 cabinet saw and it worked great. The key with any table saw is the fence, both saws I owned had really good fences. The second thing is the power, more power helps. So any saw will work, just try to get the best fence you can. Thats my best advice.

      Thank you very much. I always try to work to the best of my abilities. I have no problem with weekend warriors who take the time to educate themselves on how to do the job correctly. I have a chip on my shoulder, the house my wife and I currently own, has been destroyed by a weekend DIYer. Pretty much everything was done wrong or poorly. Keep up the good work and thank you for the comment!

      @@MikeFarrington Being an engineer by profession & old school chain of thought, I can completely relate. The lackadaisical attitude and lack of pride in one's work is very bothersome. I have long stopped hiring contractors or handymen for most part unless the expense of tools required and me doing it is > hiring. Of course, they hate me oversee them as they try and cut corners...Anyway enough of my rant. I do visit Denver/Boulder often and will drop u a note next time so we can try and meet. Love to see that shop of yourz and chat over some joe.

    Hey Mike. Great work and attention to detail. I just started watching your channel and it’s awesome. Do you have a video on how you calculate your measurements for wainscoting? Thanks for the videos.

      Thank you very much. I do not have a video on how to layout wainscoting. I'll give that idea some thought.

      Thank you. I didn't luck out, I designed around it. I did have to contend with a quad switch plate on one of the walls. I just built up a flat spot.

    Mike can you comment on how you secured the panels to the wall? Potentially saw some screws around the perimeter into studs? Did you use construction adhesive as well?

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  Před 5 lety

      Yup, I used trim head screws top and bottom into the wall studs. I also used construction adhesive.

    Pro tip: Bin is a KA primer for about anything. Save your $$ and use cheap ammonia to clean up. Denatured is nice but, big $$. Also- trash those barrel caulking guns. The 2 rail skeleton caulk guns are the bomb.
