MASSIVE $237M Donation TO FAMU Draws SKEPTICISM, Raises CONCERNS And CONFUSION | Roland Martin

  • During Florida A&M commencement, the school was presented with a multi-million dollar donation from Gregory Gerami and the Issac Batterson 7th Family Trust,
The check for the more than $237 million donation drew skepticism surrounding Gerami
Florida A&M's Office of Communications released a statement about the donation and addressed the skepticism:
"While Florida A&M University (FAMU) is still extremely excited about Mr. Gregory Gerami's historic announcement yesterday of the Isaac Batterson Family 7th Trust, we are fully aware of the skepticism that sometimes comes with such a large gift.
As expected, some individuals in the public are and will continue researching Mr. Gerami. Please know that FAMU has done its due diligence when it comes to this matter. Additionally, Mr. Gerami has and continues to do his own due diligence on things that have been and are happening at FAMU.
While a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) we signed prevents us from disclosing many details, as was reported on May 4 - Mr. Gerami transferred $237,750,000 worth of stocks into our account last month. Mr. Gerami's $237,750,000 stock transfer was received in the same manner in which we have accepted all other stocks donated to the University through the FAMU Foundation Inc. As with any non-cash gift received, such as cryptocurrency, real estate, and stocks, it will be converted to cash and recorded appropriately.
Again, we greatly appreciate Mr. Gerami's and the Isaac Batterson Family 7th Trust's generosity. Our students will be the true beneficiaries of their most generous contribution."

Financial donors and their gifts must be vetted. Does the donor's background and values align with the university? Are there strings attached to how the funds are to be spent that may be discriminatory, or does the donor expect a say in administrative decisions? Where did the money come from? Is it legal, or is it laundered? What are the tax consequences?Accepting donations is more complicated than the check clearing.

Most of us don't know the proper procedures that have to be followed to make a large donation to any school or organization. You just don't show up and drop this much money on a school. There has to be procedures followed and that includes knowledge of the donor regardless of who it is.

I have a degree of insider knowledge on this situation (not at FAMU), and unfortunately this donor is more than likely a scammer. He has been attempting to make bogus donations to a number of universities across the country, most notably Coastal Carolina University, all of which have fallen through amidst suspicious circumstances as there are a number of credible reasons to believe he doesn't actually have the money he claims to have. The CCU gift officially fell apart because of alleged bias against the donor on part of university administrators, though the most likely reason is that they came to realize that he didn't actually have the ability to fulfill his pledge. The ensuing scandal resulted in a black eye for the university and a number of people losing their jobs. He has now resurfaced again, this time at FAMU, and it’s likely to end the same way.

The stock is not worth $237m. The best valuation of stock interest is based on a public listing (stock market). On the other hand, this is stock of a privately held company, so it doesn't have a determined market price for which it can be bought/sold/traded. So how did they arrive at that valuation? For a company in farming space, a huge chunk of that valuation would be based on real property assets (land) that would be so massive, that local people could not possible be hearing about the company for the first time. My guess is big man donated stock interest to the school seeking publicity, the school will (maybe) do some research to determine true valuation and we'll find that this was more gimmick than reality. The stock would have to be sold or divested to become a "real thing" (cash) that can be disbursed for capital expenses or tuition aid. Otherwise, it will just sit in their books as an unsubstantiated asset.

  • @fistandpen2505

An unknown person comes out of nowhere and gifts $237m without board knowledge. Absolutely it should be thoroughly reviewed including the source, regardless of whether the money has gone through. This should not be controversial, as it is atypical. If the review shows no bad faith or other concerns, then it is a win and students get to have a better education courtesy of this black family. And if not, the school avoids embarrassment and an additional negative headline about HBCUs .

FAMU gives out scholarship. I can tell you that it’s very competitive. I have students who got into LSU and some other prominent schools but denied by FAMU. With over 22,000 students applying and a 32% acceptance rate, it’s very competitive. Florida state schools are competitive. Your family member can possible get scholarships later if he/she maintains a competitive gpa.

From David A.Wood: As long as the donated money to the HBCU in question (FAMU) is purely of legitimate origin and has no figurative and undue strings attached to the HBCU for it to unjustly abide by, just what happens to be the problem at the end of the day? If the donation is actually deemed to be a legitimate one after the required investigation by FAMU in regards to the source of the large donation is duly completed, then FAMU should be able to first accept and then ultimately use the donation for what it's worth. If Robert Smith gave a quarter of a billion dollars to Morehouse or any other HBCU and the board did not know anything about it, it would still be an issue. Maybe Gregory Gerami is legit (I seriously doubt it) but if he is, the board should have been in on it.

The difference is, is that Robert Smith was the COMMENCEMENT DAY SPEAKER and was very WELL KNOWN and RESPECTED. He was VETTED and approved by the board before commencement. Now, neither the President nor the trustee board had any idea that he would be awarding that gift to the Morehouse graduates that day. They knew ALL about him, but not the gift$$.

Gerami reached out to University of Texas at Austin during April 2019, just a month after he first contacted CCU, to try to make a large donation, according to emails acquired through a public records request. Gerami told UT-Austin’s senior director of gift and estate planning, Doug Duke, that the money would be coming from a land investment deal in Kentucky. CCU’s timeline also mentions that the donation would be coming from a third-party land lease deal in which a company is leasing land from Gerami to harvest hemp for CBD products.
Gerami’s description of the land deal didn’t quell the UT-Austin director’s concerns about his ability to fund a large gift, and he quickly ended the potential relationship, records show. “As I mentioned during our phone conversation a couple of weeks ago, additional information/personal visit with your financial advisors will not change the University’s interest level in a gift,” Duke wrote in a May 2019 email to Gerami."

Do you really think Bezos is the wealthiest in the world? I think those middle east guys will argue that point, but why?
