How can I identify cheap/fake vs real watches from their movements?
I suffer from high blood pressure and at the ripe old age of 62 am told it could be dangerous so I took my blood pressure before and after watching your assemble and disassemble of movements and guess what? My blood pressure drops to survivable limits . I am forever in your dept thank you most kindly brilliant work , can only be described as poetry in motion life saving watch maintenance bravo you my man are a star.👍👏🏻😃

I and am reading some books but it is hard to grasp some things as I am trying to use my imagination with what I am reading. I am still scared of tinkering with my watches for fear of damaging them..... watching repair and hearing you expertly explain what and why you do.... is just priceless information to me. THANK YOU. There are no watch schools near me (I am in Los Angeles) and you are the best thing right now. Please keep the great videos coming... Ps. I also love the way you show what tools you use... explain why you use that tool and what other tool can be used to accomplish the same results.... Very interesting, and thanks yet again! I marvel at how smoothly your reassemblies seem to go. I always have a dickens of a time with trainwheel pivots refusing to engage when replacing their bridge, screws snapping out of the tweezers, etc. But I still very much enjoy watch servicing, and your lessons have been invaluable.
You do not want to skimp on tweezers or screwdrivers. If you have quality tweezers, you are probably squeezing them too tight. Squeeze them gently with just enough pressure to hold them

Love the way all the components go exactly where they should. When I try you can guarantee springs will spring and screws will disappear over my shoulder.
I have a Seagull 1963. Beautiful movement. Great watch. The crown has partially jammed though and needs lubricating. Not something I can do. I watch these vids because I like watches, I'm no watchmaker!

Your findings on the counterfeit 2824 match my findings on automotive and household machine products from Chinese companies. The Chinese manufactured parts come with lower grade components and inferior quality controls. While the components work initially, I found that they last about 1/3 the time of non-Chinese manufactured components. From what I have learned, the Chinese will produce a quantity of product for a price. They set-up their shops to make a profit. That means that they use the least expensive raw components possible and do not incur expense to adjust machines or processes to maintain a quality control standard. Machines are fixed only when they break, not when they are making product out of specifications. No extra expense for quality control supervisors on the human production lines either. If possible, I stay away from any machined product from China as it is not worth my time to install it.

The "counterfeit" 2824 that you're talking about is called a "Shanghai 2824". I wouldn't call it a counterfeit as much as I would call it a clone of the ETA 2822, which is the 3 Hz variant of the ETA 2824.
I have to disagree, as the 2824 is outside of patent and copyright, anyone can make a copy/clone and make any changes to it they like. What would make it a counterfeit is if it was marked as ETA, or even Selitta or Seagull. Just because it is copied and done badly doesn’t make it counterfeit.
I understand where you're coming from. And yes, we all know the patents are no longer in effect. That wasn't my point. The selita and seagulls are clones. They're intention is to perform and function in the same way as the 2824 was designed. These movements are not - they are sold as a replacement for the 2824 but the video highlites the fact that they do not perform or function the same way as a true clone. I believe counterfeit (although not bitter. Was a learning experience). People should be warned to spend a little more on a better product and that's what this video serves to do :)
Watch Repair Channel No sorry Mark you still can’t call it a counterfeit. It is a bad copy. Although Selitta and Seagull make copies you cannot really call them clones (a clone should be identical) as the parts are not necessarily compatible ie locating pins about face. The fact is that anyone that buys one of these off EBay for 1/10-1/20 the price of a good movement and expects the same quality is living in cloud coockoo land. No problem with you highlighting the bad quality.
Watch Repair Channel It would also depend on which incarnation of the 2824 was copied as per a number of articles the 2824 has operated with 18,000-36,000 bpm and all points in between.
Interesting point. Counterfeit, to me anyway, means deliberate deception (like marking it as an ETA brand as you point out, or perhaps using same colors for product labels, etc.,), although "intent" is pretty hard to prove legally.

Not going to lie.....seeing you put the train Bridge back on, spin the gears and all seated in their jewels instantly made me sick with envy!!! I've got steady hands, but not great optical equipment, so no matter how hard I try, it takes me what feels like forever to do!!!

Though I don't condone cheap movements, they may play a pivotal role in teaching students how to broach larger holes, de-burr, or add dimples to parts that may need a slight 'lift' to work right. And because these are cheap movements, no loss if they get ruined.
ETA is part of Swiss Swatch. Now copyright for ETA 2824 are expired, so You can Sellita. Sellita is China owned brand, but production is in Swiss.

Just a small detail but 2824 has a lift angle of 53 degrees. Doing measurements with the timegraphers default 52 degrees cause a little error in the amplitude reading.

Your videos are indeed very therapeutic. Now I also want to have a go at repairing 2 old watches that I've accumulated over the last few years, namely Chinese "Homage" watches (Sewor SW043) looks like a Divers watch but certainly isn't in anyway waterproof.
The movement in this watch looks like no other that I've seen on anyone's CZcams watch fix videos.
It is is probably something that you would consider to be a piece of junk. After all, you regularly service real Rolex watches and not some £13 knock off from China.
But in it's defense, I would say that after acquiring a good example, one without what appeared to be a single nasal hair fouling the hair spring. A really disgusting discovery. This watch is really capable of keeping excellent time.
O.K so it took 2 replacements from eBay before I eventually got a watch that has lasted for more than a year and is still going strong.
And now I have 2 watches at hand to attempt to make into one good watch.
There lies the problem, I've never seen anyone do a strip down and reassembly video of this movement.
After looking on eBay to see if anyone there sells this movement, (because I wanted to learn it's name or code number) I came away with the idea that this movement is unique to watch manufacture only and is never sold on the open market.
I would think that many who watch your videos would have similar non working junk China watches laying around gathering dust at their homes. (nasal hair included).
So would you consider making a video about servicing this movement and so inspiring more to have a go at what could be a very satisfying hobby.?

Due to pricing, I have bought several “shanghai eta 2824 clone”. They don’t last long. I have even tried the “vavalon24” clone. Those are better but not perfect. Good for practice but not good for long term. I am sticking with real eta 2824 or 2836 until I can no longer find them at any decent price.

How would you suggest telling the difference between something like the seagull 2824 vs the ones in this video as I'm quite fancying having another dabble and have and nice case that one would fit which just now is fitted with a cheap broken movement which is most likely one like you show? I bought that same movement, it's for sale between US$20 and US$30 on ebay. It really sucks, once I remove the stem it was impossible to put it back, I had to dismantle everything and start again but it keep failing. I give up. I'll buy the seagull clone.

The one thing I cannot understand at 12:17 is the need to remove the jewels to oil them. Why not just drop a bit of oil in the hole and be done with it vs risking the loss of a microscopic jewel ?

Guess we get what we pay for. I have a ETA 28-24 movement in my Glycine Combat Sub that’s less than 1 year old and it doesn’t seem to like being wound that much. Makes the rotor spin and the winding stem feel a bit stiff and grainy (if that makes any sense). Seems it prefers a few winds (about 10) and then the movement of being on the wrist to keep the mainspring wound.

On the clone/counterfeit difference, I wouldn't say it's in the quality or accuracy of the copy but in the purpose they are made for. A clone is a "honest" copy that doesn't claim to be the original, a counterfeit is something made to fool someone into thinking it's the original. So a counterfeit would have all the markings of the original as a clone will have it's own brand and markings or none at all.

hi sir, your channel is a GREAT help!! I am started to fixing my own eta 7750 and 2824-2 and your step by step videos are great! I do have a quick question.. My stem for 2824-2 was stuck so i had to disassembled, facing two problems.. i was finally able to fix the locking issue with the stem but it is no longer self winding.. before if the stem is all the way in you can rotate the watch to get it going without shaking the watch to start,. after i reassembled it is not doing that.. Also the date wheel is not moving smoothly.
Could you please help me!!! I spent straight 4 hours and another 2 hours yesterday and making no progress. Truly have a great respect for you and other professional watch person.
