    There's also that "Adagio in D Minor" song from _Sunshine_ which has been used a lot, most recently in _Wonder Woman 1984._
    "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter has appeared in a few movies, including _Arrival_ and _Shutter Island._

    I can explain the use of Hurt in Logan's trailer. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt was recorded relatively close to his death, and many believe his version of the song is reflective of his own life given the song's subject matter. Many, myself included, believed the song was basically spoiling the movie by saying SPOILER ALERT Wolvie dies in this movie after some self reflection.
    EDIT: Also, why no mention that time Warner Bros. used a portion of The Bridge of Khazad Dum from Lord of the Rings for the trailer of Man of Steel? I remember people making a big deal about it when the trailer dropped.

    • @guitarman0365

      the lyrics just match up well with logans story.
      ' everyone i know goes away in the end"
      because of wolverines healing factor he has lived for so long and can essentially reheal from even death itself when he was younger everyone he has ever loved he has had to watch go away in the end.
      his 'empire of dirt' refers to wolverine ending up after all he has been through with just another grave stone surrounded by dirt to leave behind to his daughter after all the humans and mutants he has killed in wars and battles over his life and has nothing left to show for it.
      'i focus on the pain, the only thing that's real' essetially referring to how much of logans past was never a memory but lost in his mind and the only thing real to him is the pain he currently feels and always will feel that reminds him despite no memory of living up to a certain point he is in fact real.
      'the needle tears a hole, the old familiar sting' obviously not needles but can refer to wolverines giant metal claws that peirce his skin everytime he uses them and it has become the pain familiar with him over his life as he mentioned to rouge it hurts every single time he does it.
      I could not have imagined a better fitting song for that trailer to encapsulate Wolverine's journey

    • @harmless_spider
      @harmless_spider Před rokem +2

      to be fair there are scenes in the other six movies where the lightsabers work more like a bat than a sword, leading to some theories about lightsabers technically having a flat edge that we can't see bc they're so damn bright (and the darksaber looks the way it does bc it's just less bright than the rest and/or dipping into the UV spectrum) and more experienced wielders (vader, qui-gon, yoda) would be better at utilizing the sharp vs flat edges to their advantage, while less experienced wielders (luke, young obi-wan, rey and kylo ig) are generally still learning, and therefore more likely to just hit someone/something with the flat side of the blade without intending to. obviously, because lightsabers are still so hot, the flat side's still gonna do some good damage, but it's not gonna cut through everything like butter the same way the sharp edges will.
      this is of course entirely up to the person whether or not they choose to incorporate this into their personal canon, and it's probably not actually true canon, but i think it fits well into what we see on-screen.

    As a trailer composer, I can attest that most (if not all) of these re-uses of production music are strictly due to convenience. Trailers usually need music within 2-3 days, so hiring a custom score from a composer is extremely risky and far more expensive than licensing a production track that the editors can cut directly to. I’ve seen a handful of my production tracks used across hundreds of projects, often completely unrelated (trailers, TV commercials, CZcams videos, etc). The film industry operates at a breakneck speed, so music for films & trailers follows suit!

      I can understand your pov, but it personally really bothered me that they took her theme and visually (re)associated it with characters mostly unrelated to her and a trilogy that wasn't "her" story (the way the original trilogy was her, Luke and Han's story). It felt like a slap in the face, that they took that from her and recycled it. They didn't do that to the others (aside from, weirdly enough, the ewoks).
      I also get, though, that her theme is the most gentle/ nostalgic sounding of the main instantly-recognizable themes, and if they wanted to play on that, they had limited recycleable options. But -- still, it was recycling.
      It was not only taking from the individuality of Leia's story-elements (and really, recycling Carrie's character's theme isn't a charming tribute, imo), and not only a blatant attempt to tug on my wallet through my heart, but it was also just... effing *lazy* of them. You guys missed the point. He clearly knows it's Leia'a theme. His point isn't that it's not an original piece; it's that you associate that piece with something nostalgic and it manipulates you into feeling nostalgic watching the trailer

    • @elsad5810
      @elsad5810 Před 4 lety +45

      It is Leia's theme, that was known and shown at around 1:45 (I think) when he showed the breakdown someone did of the themes in the trailer. Leia's theme playing was clearly significant and intentional. The very end of the trailer, however, was a combination of the latin theme of death, kylo ren's theme, and the ewoks' themes, which don't have any signifacance together, just sound nostalgic. Yes, the pieces were original to the franchise, but kind of just combined to create a feeling of Star Wars-y nostalgia. That's why he goes through examples of movies who steal music from other movies to convey nostalgic emotion, or use stock music to convey a general emotion. These are all ways of how trailer scores are created to "trick" us, or make us feel something. At least I think, that's how I took it.

    As a trailer music composer i can say: It´s all about being creative and doing stuff that kinda noone heard before.
    (Sorry for my english)
    First of all trailers are composed and produced a bit differently than movie scores because you have to follow a structure most of the time. You have to know where to place edit points for the editor so he can change and combine the cue with other SFX or tracks. Moreover the music has to be massive but simple in many cases so there´s a place for dialogue on top of it which isn´t always that important in music for films.
    Another thing is that the trailer genre is a huge thing itself. Many people watch trailers nowadays because they enjoy them as much as watching a movie. Every production studio wants to create something special and new to entertain and build up a hype. if they just take the music as it is from the movies it wouldn´t fit, it wouldn´t be so polished and massive with all those fx and it wouldn´t deliver such a hype. I´m not saying trailer music is better than movie scores but it´s the same with cars: You can drive with a twingo through a desert but it makes more sense to use an offroad vehicle. If trailer music would be used in movies you´d get a headache after an hour because of all the impact sounds, booms, hits, swooshes etc.
    Another point is "time": composers who get a so called "custom job" for creating music for a movie studio only have a very small amount of time for creating a new cue/cover/remix. I was involved in a pitch for (i´m not allowed to say it yet hehe) but i had only 24 hours to create a cue. Sometimes it´s just 12 or even 8h. And i´m talking about composing AND mixing AND mastering. Then those supervisors compare it with other cues which are written in parallel by other composers and if you´re lucky enough they will take your version. I think because of the time pressure noone has that much time to think about every single note in a composition. You don´t even write while you watch the trailer. They ask for music and THEN edit the clips over your music.
    But all in all everything that just sounds great, massive and new will be used, no matter if its musically correct or not.
    I hope i could give you an additional insight into trailer music :)
    Hope you all have a great start into the week!
    Andy

    Okay, I’m gonna be real with you, Sideways, you’ve gotta do a Godzilla video. It would be a LONG ASS video, but it’s worth being done. The motifs built up over 69 years of Godzilla deserve recognition. Even if you JUST focus on the core Toho series and ONLY on the Ifukube-scored films, you still have a LOT to talk about, from how the final villain of the Heisei series, Destoroyah, has a theme that is an oppressive, bombastic reworking of Ifukube’s “Mystery/Discovery of Something Strange” motif all the way back from King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962, to Mothra vs. Godzilla’s complete redo of Mothra’s theme and how it would be the one used in almost ALL future appearances, even in Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters’ All-Out Attack, where the motifs of the monsters were mostly dropped, Mothra’s song is still in her theme, just with the notes swapped around, to even just looking at the Heisei Era rearrangements of the Showa Ifukube themes and how they’ve evolved and changed!

      Michael Giacchino is impressively adaptive. Back in the 2000s he was known for The Incredibles and Lost, two totally different genres and music types. Now he did Rogue One and it has its own themes, but it fits in with the musical landscape of Star Wars perfectly. That's part of what made that movie so good when other stuff from Star Wars post-Disney hasn't been that great.
