      ELI5:
      Traditional displays use filters to only let the desired color through, _absorbing the rest as heat_ , which is inefficient, and not as accurate.
      Quantum dots on the other hand _reemit the light they absorb_ as a very precisely set color, which means no produced light is wasted as heat!

    Quantum dots are amazing! They are so revolutionary that a Nobel prize was given to a guy who invented them. You can also use this shiny goo to make your protein emit light. Such methods are used to visualize several molecules in a cell simultaneously with a microscope using UV or violet light. The same reason which makes them great for a display (exact emission separation and extreme stability) allows to visualize 4-5 proteins at the same time. Trying that with previous fluorophores was quite a bad experience.
    This video is so great, thanks for bringing attention to qds!!

    8:56 I helped write the PC Builder for Micro Center almost TEN years ago! And they're only NOW starting to implement the "pc-builder kiosk" inside the Micro Center locations.
    It took a lot of tech labor to link the factory part numbers, with the part manufacturer bar codes, to create a new PC-build part code for every part.
    The "genius" with the conversion is the way it convert the part numbers to match actual part compatibility.
    So all you do is type the manufacturer bar code, type the MicroCenter inhouse code, and it generates a new PC-B code. And the part instantly shows up in the user gui front page as an option for part selection.
    The reason it took over 10 years to implement what I made was to get part manufacturers to agree that each new barcode would basically have a meaning.
    Even though I have no part in the implementation, It's nice to know I had a hand in it.
    I originally wanted to go to every Micro Center location and setup each Kiosk and teach the employees to troubleshoot the system. But personal matters lead me to literally zip everything up in a nice package for them to implement the PC-B without me. :-(

It might be a thing on lcd like you say but it's so unlikely to happen that it's not a problem for 99% of us but oled is something that I'd stay away from as burn in with my use case is extremely likely and there is no burn in warranty either in my country.

      @GH0STST4RSCR34M burn-in on LCD's is barely noticeable or non-existent IMO... I just hope Samsung's qd-oled has dimming on a pixel-by-pixel basis like oled rather than local array dimming. If it's just an LCD with a local array dimming OLED backlight that doesn't actually bring it any closer to OLED imo.

    • @Lead_Foot
      @Lead_Foot Před 2 lety +8

      It's still an oled display so yes it's self emissive, but only produces blue light. It just uses quantum dots to convert blue to red and green

    • @graysonsmith7031
      @graysonsmith7031 Před 2 lety

      @@Lead_Foot yes, but for each rgb pixel they still need to limit the light going through to change the percieved color. In theory instead of turning off the blue oled pixel backlight they could block all light by setting the r, g, and b values to zero (similar to blocking all blue light to only get red and green for a bright yellow, but instead blocking all colors for a near black). This could then mean that the blue oled backlight doesn't necessarily have to backlight each pixel individually, instead there could be larger blue oled backlights to light up anywhere from every four pixels to four quarters of the display, ergo local dimming with no true blacks all over again.
      I'd love it if they did it the way it appears in the video and the way you are thinking, but I'm betting the cost savings of cutting down on the total number of addressable oled backlights is too tempting. We may see this first before getting displays with a blue oled backlight for each individual rgb QD pixel.

    • @tr4x1ymus
      @tr4x1ymus Před 2 lety +4

      every oled screen has pixel by pixel dimming that is because each pixel component (red, green, blue) is a diode that emits light (organic light emitting diode - OLED), LCD is liquid crystal display which uses white light that passes through a liquid crystal filter that gets you the color you need. Had a little bit of a stroke reading your comment, but hopefully this helps, the current problem is that OLEDs suffer from burn in or in other words voltages needed to make the diode shine bright enough degrade the diodes much faster.

    • @graysonsmith7031
      @graysonsmith7031 Před 2 lety

      @@tr4x1ymus I'm talking about Samsung's QD-OLED that they explained in the video. They explain that QD-OLED does not have a red or green light emitting diode and only has a blue diode that quantum dots convert into red and green. It could in effect be made like an LCD display, but the liquid crystal would be replaced with QD and the backlight would be replaced with a blue OLED backlight (or multiple smaller ones for local dimming). I suspect they will do this rather than giving each rgb QD pixel it's own blue oled backlight.
