Diagnosing the dreaded ticking sound in an LS Engine... SOLVED!

  • In this video, Nick takes a close look at his ls engine in his 1965 Impala SS, which he performed an ls swap for several years ago. He started to notice a ticking sound in the engine.
    After some basic diagnostics, Nick determined the culprit was the trunnion bearing. Luckily, on this ls3 variant engine, it's an easy fix. It's also fairly straightforward on any ls engine.
    Is your engine making a ticking noise? Let us know what it turned out to be!

    The only way to not hear lifter tick on an Ls engine is to close the hood and not listen for it

    I like the Brian Tooley v2 trunnion kit. While it’s still a needle bearing design, it is better with cartridge style race bearings. Ive heard a lot of stories with the bronze bushing type wearing or prematurely wearing out.

    Those brass bushings are horrible. 1 set lasted me about 100 miles, the other lasted maybe 20 miles and 2 passes.. every single one of them were ovaled out severely. A couple were already eating into the rocker.

    This video made me check my already upgraded rockers for a ticking noise…..popped the cover off…..sure enough, side 2 side play on 1 rocker……weird, low miles on them too.

    I put a btr trunnion kit and stage 2 cam/springs in my 5.3 about a year ago and its been ticking really loud. I thought at first it sounded like lifters but idk after watching this it might be this. Id rather it be a rocker issue than a lifter because I really dont want to take the heads off. I put brand new lifters in too!

      I checked the torque on all of the rocker arms and checked the rocker arms like you did in this vid looking for play but found none, spun the engine over and looked for anything out of the ordinary and I didn't see anything concerning to the eyeball in terms of rocker arms/pushrods. I put it back together and still making a noise so Im thinking its probably a lifter

    I hear people say dont do the upgrade couse the oem has better reliability. Though the needlebearings are not fun to get around inside the engine and couse havoc.

      @Alvaro Arana CHE are probably the best. Also, unlike some posts here, NOBODY uses brass in their bushings. They are bronze, which is far superior to brass......

  • @377
    @377 Před 2 lety +3

    You most likely pushed that bushing in too far and it made it's own clearance. It's an easy mistake to make. After installing each bushing make sure that the lifter can easily spin or you'll run into this problem again.
