It is not ridiculous at all, that is the closest sound one could ever emulate. Very helpful, thank you sir
My man supposed to learn something new everyday and you sir have shown me more than a few today thanks for sharing my brother
Your very welcomed
My brother that's a gift. I mean anybody can learn to be a mechanic but to take something so complex and break it down is amazing. Preciate it
Thank you sir 🙏
Now that was a fantastic clear cut explanation. And the sound difference with the screwdriver just made me get it.
Thank you.
You should be a teacher.
By far the best video I have seen
Straight to the root of the problems. Great video.
By far the most informative video I've found thus far on my search to properly diag my own knocking engine
That was the best description for those two noise I have ever heard!
Thank you sir
Thank you, sir, for the simple and easy to understand explanation. Some of us on this side of CZcams need it put in layman's terms. Thanks again.
Well done, friend. Informative and super easy. I was actually taught this way to diagnose engines long ago. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Definitely subscribed. ✌️🤙💯
Man, this is one of the best explanations I’ve came across. Thanks for breaking it down like that. After watching this, I think my 5.3 has a lifter issue or bad o ring on the pick up tube. Fingers crossed.
Pure genius. The screw driver sound demonstration. Thank you. Great video.
Man just helped me out alot inherited a 2006 dodge ram 1500 SLT with the 4.7 and im confident its lifter tick very awesome video thanks for the help earned a new sub
Great job, so many videos with experts but none of them feel real, keep on doing exactly what your doing bro. 🤟🏾
Thank you
Hey auto guy diy love the old school methods for sure that’s literally the way I learned I just wanted to add if a guy didn’t have a stethoscope you can always take a long screwdriver and place the flathead (etc) end on the valve cover or oil pan and put your ear on the handle end it also works great to single out what pulley or tensioner has failed along with many other uses just make sure your hoodie strings necklaces etc are not going to get into moving parts such as fans belts etc thanks for your time and videos
Hello Auto Guy DIY, I appreciate the knowledge. That’s diagnosis like a professional right there, and we thank you for helping us become one. Be blessed!
I am subscribing to your channel man!!! Those are very hidden tricks and tips a lot of mechanics hide from regular people, thanks man !! I will never forget what you just taught me, I am subscribing now!! Thanks!!
Thank you sir
Yup. The dude knows his stuff.
@@COlson-rh3dg I appreciate that sir
That was a excellent tutorial.
Precise and to the point.
I'm going to save for customers. Awesome 👌
Thank you very much sir
What liked is how you didn't take 25 minutes to show the problem.. I'm gonna subscribe. Keep the excellent videos producing.
@@borgsimpson935 yes sir will do
Good video. For those curious Lisle makes a mechanic-specific stethoscope kit with two different listening rods to detect either mechanical or air/vacuum type noises. Part # is 52750 and costs a little over 20 bucks.
Honestly bro your a genius and you need more subs bro thank you ❤
great vid pal.... The sound example with the screwdrivers was just spot on!
Thank you sir
Dang it never occurred to me to listen below, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for the help !!
Your welcome
I learned more from you on how to diagnose my issue than the past 25 videos I have watched.😂
Liked and subscribed my dude
Thank you
Thank you buddy
This guy's know about Mechanic the guys who know just hearing noise and can identify the problem is a real Mechanic
Thanks friend... after many vids, you're the first and only one to explain how to tell the difference to a newbie wannabe diy-er.
Your welcome buddy
It's good to hear buddy.
Wow, you just solved my query. I have a 2012 Ford Escape (132K) and its ticking not knocking. Another Yt video led me to buy Lucas oil treatment. We'll see.
OG trick is use a long screwdriver and put you ear to one end and the metal end where your checking
You're good! I genuinely learned something important today - now thinking that I've got a lifter tick.
Thanks for this video you have a new subscriber! So awesome… thankfully it actually did just need oil. Not my car but I guess I’m the mechanic in my neighborhood😂😅.. Full credit to you for making me crawl around underneath the car and listen to all the noises… then I went and figure out reasons I could possibly be knocking, and it was simply the oil. I never put any oil in it they had an oil change over 11,000 miles so word to the wise - just check your oil people
Rite on
Beautifully explained I'm in the process of this same problem right now almost certain now it's a hydraulic lifter 07 Trailblazer 4.2
Hey, that was brilliant with the srewdrivers. You were spot on with both noises.
Thank you big dog
A1 noise demonstration! Just subscribed, turned on all noti's and look forward to all your content. Peace from NC.
Very helpful info. Thank you for breaking it down and making it simple to understand.
Your welcome
Good thing I came to your channel i honestly thought my lifter in my 6.4 hemi was going bad but its the injectors functioning properly. I had my SRT for 11 years now and do my oil change faithfully every 3,000 miles with 161,000 on the dash from day one.
That's sweet brother
Way to reach that goal.keep that good info coming.job well done.
Not exactly my noise but you helped me rule that stuff out and I like your style, brother.
Man thank you for this, I just learned ALOT thanks to you!!
Bro that's the best explanation I've heard yet thanks!
Glad it was helpful! brother
Holy cow, you’re awesome. Pretty sure now I have a lifter tick. Thank you so much! Super cool video and very informative! And love your deliverance.
Your welcome
Is a lifter job expensive on a 305 engine?
I could get expensive depending on what all needs to be done once your inside the engine
Does it need new heads bro?
I would definitely take him to a machine shop have them looked at and resurfaced
It is not ridiculous bro, its actually the very accurate sound of if. Thank u sir
Your welcome big dog
Great video. Way to demonstrate the difference between rod or lifter sound. Easy does it.
Thank you sir
High miles Toyota land cruiser, makes the ticking sound(lifter) only while driving, nothing at idle. even when reving the engine in park no noise. Still a lifter problem. Thanks, and a very clear and understanding video
Thank you sir
Awesome! Old Blue is a champ. Ticks or no ticks she still running strong 😊 because of you lover bear
Well thank you lover 🐻
That blue ram is awesome
Thank you buddy
Damn man that is a genius way to simplify recreating that noise. I will try tomorrow.
Thank you boss
This was helpful.. I'm experiencing this in my ford fusion right now
This is EXCELLENT advice! Thank you! I am going to get into flipping cars and I can obviously run a compression test to really make sure there is no problems with the engine but if it got a rod knock even with perfect compression that would be a deal breaker.... this video helps that....going to jack it up and then listen....I also happen to own a stethoscope cuz I bought it to listen for termites in walls so I can use that too
Yes sir thank you buddy
Great sound explanation my brother !
Nice job, now going to go out to my car which has sat for past two months and determine if it's a rod or valves. Thank you.
Wow. So easy and helpful! You are great, thanks much!
By far the best video on this topic, mine sounds like lifters ticking Metal to metal sound, But When i inspect all my lifters Nothing is loose At all It looks good so i have no clue what’s going on, The ticking gets faster the more rpm’s
Maybe the timing chain tensioner failing
You should have 417k subs not 4.17...you are filled with wisdom
Thank you brother
those were some good sounds you made! good comparison!
Thank you so much. Simple & powerful.
Definitely good info. Short and to the point!.
Aye gang, appreciate the knowledge boss man . Got a 07 Escalade & it’s definitely need a lifter noise
I'm glad I could hook you up my brother
Simple and beautiful… thank you my friend… I have lifter tick
The screwdriver tapping is dang close! Thanks for educating viewers.
Thank you big dog
You just made my day.
Thank you!
thanks man... really good tip with the stethoscope. god bless you
Your welcome
This also really helped me out, I'm having this same issue with my mom's 02 Mustang! 😩😩
It not the end of the world. I have gotten atleast 100,000 miles out of my truck. Just take it easy on the car and pay attention to the sound to hear if it's getting worse or not
That’s good to know. I’d be okay getting 100k more miles
@@autoguydiy4244 idk about that lol my car sounds rough 😂it sound like rattling and idle tick 😂
Can chain tensioner possible
really helpful actually, thanks boss
My Jeep has been making a similar noise for over a year 😮 Hopefully I can use your method to narrow down the issue.
I also have a couple of exhaust leak video's out. An exhaust leak can sound alot like a lifter tick
We had a Ford F-150 with a 460 in it..1978…that beast ran and ran..even when it started knocking…a ford big block or small block v8 have very distinctive knocks…I can tell if it’s a ford v8 or not by the sound of the knock before even seeing the vehicle lol….that 460 blew a rod through the oil pan and still made it the few miles back home..blowing metal chunks out the bottom of the engine…lol…when they blow…u know it! lol…
Thanks for the video, I just found out what the noise was in my 92 Oldsmobile it was definitely the lifter thanks again. I changed the oil and it’s all good now. Do you think you could mage a video describing the most durable American V6’s and V8’s ever made? That’d be so cool !!!!
Your welcome
This was a big help thanks man
You are the man. Great video. Thank you !!
your camera work is actually quite good for handheld
Great video. The screwdrivers perfectly represent those sounds, except I am still stumped. My mother has a 2016 Cadillac ATS 2.0 turbo. I have been cleaning up the car, doing some service work on it, and getting ready to sell. The car only has 67K miles on it, and suddenly, I have the loudest knock I have ever heard. Sitting inside with the windows up and the hood down and locked, it's so loud, like I had the windows down and the hood open. The tone is more like the sound of a rod, yet it sounds like it's coming from the topside. I haven't been underneath it yet, but it may not make much difference in determining where it's coming from because it's so loud. Damn, I need to get rid of this car like yesterday..Ugh!
short simple to the point. Thanks for the info. Helped me determine what the noise is I'm experiencing
Rite on sir your welcome
@@autoguydiy4244 I hear ticking noise only while accelerating what could it be
Could be a lifter ticking
Lose of oil pressure momentarily possibly.
@@autoguydiy4244 ughhhh ls motors weak points !!!!!!
Great description bro. Thanks you!
Thank you sir
Thanks for sharing sir vary helpfull tipo for my hemi 5.7
Your absolutly right i like how discribe it by useing screwdrivers plastic to plastic and metal to metal. Exactly what it sounds like in a honda or toyota 4 cylinder.
Thank you sir
Great video bro! 💯
Thanks that was very helpful much appreciated 👍
Very informative, thank you sir !
Your rod knock / lifter tip seems to be spot on.
Thank you big dog
Thank you man that helped out a lot
You can use a mechanic's stethoscope, eg a screwdriver. Place the handle against your ear and the blade against whatever part of the engine you are trying to diagnose.
Yes sir. That's a great idea
Lol, my automotive teacher taught me that.
This is a great video thank you so much didnt know just happen to my s10
Thank you. I'm glad you came aboard
I just bought a 98 mustang gt for 2000 and it sounded okay on my way Home, today when I started to look at it to see if it needed a full tune up on it since it’s so old I started to hear that same lifter noise you pointed out… I didn’t know what it was and assumed it was a rod knock I got so scared because he sold it for so cheap. I will start working on the car tomorrow and hopefully it will go away, THANKS A LOT MAN
Your welcome big dog. Start with oil change and replace one quart with a reputable oil additive. See what you come up with. The car could have set for a long time and need to work out the bugs.
Also do the plugs, wires, air filter. Fuel filter if it has an in-line filter
@@autoguydiy4244 for sure man! The car definitely looks like it’s been collecting dust for AWHILE, Thanks for that too, I do believe it’s definitely the lifter ticking since it gets quieter as the engine warms up and completely goes away when fully warmed up. But will start doing the little things first
Big dog that's an exhaust leak. Watch my other video with my 03 and 09. The 09 has an exhaust leak. Hot me up let me know if that's what it sounds like. 😏
@@autoguydiy4244 🤔… it sounds exactly like that but it comes from the driver side by the valve cover not the center piece, also as you revv the car it gets a quicker ticking noise but it becomes slower as it idles, it does go away after a good 5 min of driving though, what are your thoughts man I’ll really appreciate it
Terrific presentation.
Thank you sir
I keep seeing that front end clip in backgrounds of your garage shots.... So... In your very first video you showed that front bumper spot you were going to get to... Is that the new piece? Or do I need to go rewatch the video streams to see if you fixed that already. If that is the case I apologize and I need to get to work and start catching up. lol. I think I jumped on your train just a few months ago so I likely missed the earlier stuff. ... Either way.. congrats on the 400 subs. I love seeing your channel growing. You show it bottom line up front and to the point.
Thank you very much sir. That is the front bumper cover in the back ground. I will be painting that and installing soon. I also need to go back to the salvage yard and get the metal bumper plate mine is bent pretty bad. I also have my parents bumper to do also sir
Great video man.
Thank you sir

Hola! Brand New subscriber here (you had me hooked after 1 video!) You have the teacher's gift of being able to teach and explain things in a way everyone understands... My hats off to you sir,!
So, of course i have this same problem, but after watching this and without even getting under it, I'm pretty sure that I have a both😮. Part of that was because you said it's associated with transmission issues, which are present, but like you I'm waiting it out. I diagnosed the lifter awhile back with my stethoscope it's just a mini fortune to change them. Can I do one at a time or is it recommended to do all of them at once? Also, Do you think this could be the reason my oil turns black so soon after a tune up? Like within 1000-1500 miles after? Or maybe PCV valve? I have a 04 jeep Cherokee straight 6 AWD (first year). Also I do have another question for you. About a year ago, I was filling my tank and afterwards my fuel gauge just stopped working, every now and then when I fill up it goes to full but within a minute drops back down to nothing. So I recently changed the fuel pump as it's the only way to get sending unit now, but it didn't change the gauge issue. Also right after that started, my oil gauge started dropping to nothing, but only when I'm stopped, it goes right back up when I accelerate & does not do this all the time or even alot. I notice it mostly when I'm close to an empy fuel tank. I changed one of the 2, either the oil sending unit or oil pressure sensor (I can't remember which tho & my Chilton where I write said info has been partly eaten by my puppy, ironically it was that part he was hungry for!)
I know those last 2 are randomness at best, but I can't figure it out, I've asked on a few platforms and nobody can say. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Jeeps name is Nola, she & I would be indebted to you if you could suggest anything, she's my baby girl and I want her to remain that way as long as possible... She's closing in on 300k!
Thanks in advance,
As always,
Misty
You should have an oil pressure sensor the oil pressure sensor could be shorting out thats why its inaccurate. Your fuel gauge is apart of your fuel pump and with the oil it's probably just a dirty engine.
@@autoguydiy4244 no, it's got to be something else. Like I said we just changed the fuel pump and it didn't do anything for it. I don't know, I'm thinking maybe there's a short in the day somewhere. For both to be acting up, it's just weird. As for the oil, I know it's an older vehicle, but we maintain it very regularly and do all the upkeep on it. If it was from anything I guess maybe carbon build up. But either way, thanks for taking time out & responding. I do appreciate you & your videos are awesome dawg keep it up 😁
Some times you can get a Faulty parts. Check wires from tipm and fuses , relays, connectors
Thank you very much
When it comes to your lifters, always do all of them while you're there. If not it will find the next weakest link and it will go out fast.
Nice video and thanks brother
That tic vs knock was smart af
Thank you sir
In your opinion and experience, how long would engine have to be running with a knock that resembles lifter tick, to become a "slam" and cause some unrepairable damage to the crankshaft? Great explanation and vid.
Depends on how you drive it,take care of it, and the strain on the engine from day to day. Could last awhile
My old toyota 7k engine still got tick tick sound even after the engine being rebuild? The mechanic replace everything from timing chain, valve, piston, piston ring, conrod bearing almost everything even servicing the hydraulic valve lifter but after everything done the tick tick sound still there? It's possible the sound come from the push rod? Or the rocker arm? Or it's possible maybe the lifter? Please help me. Thank you
A local mechanic.... Said that the engine noise ... On my 1991 Buick Riviera...Which sounded like a rod or a lifter to me... Was actually the Harmonic Balancer. And he was right ... As the noise secest. When they replaced the Harmonic Balancer..,.cmn
Best way to listen for rod knock is to drain the oil , put your ear to the drain opening, and run Er' at 2500/3500rpm.
That's not very smart 😕
@@autoguydiy4244 oh em I creating the rod knock 🤔
big dog thanks man i got my stethoscope for car fix on the way
Thanks that help me out a lot mine are the lifters thanks so much
Your welcome sir
I have a lexus v6 with the infamous sludge problem. it has a "knock" that comes very apparent after the car warms up and settles down to normal rpm. It also starts to have a burnt oil smell with some smoke after it is running. You do not hear the knokc upon initial start up.
is the engine toast or is there a way to flush the engine to get the caked up sludge out and start fresh with new oil?
It's alway worth a shot with an engine flush. At that point you know you gave it your best shot to save it Also check out the oil once drained look for excessive or big pieces of metal would say mmo if any for the flush.
