Lebron could play until he's 50. My long-term plan is to collect until I die. I don't collect what the crowd collects. My collectibles may change from time to time, but it's a hobby. One of the 5 things many retirees' wish they had in retirement is a hobby. I'm looking at a collection of TTM's from 1961 that are not authenticated. I'll get the Hall of Famers slabbed if I buy them.

I focus on Dominique Wilkins cards. I've got all the Star cards and several in-person autos from him. My goal is to finish getting all of the cards from his playing years and then just get new cards that I really find interesting. One thing I've looked into are uncut Star card sheets that contain his Star cards. Guess we will see how that goes. Have fun collecting, everyone!

When I returned to collecting cards, I thankfully kept all of my Dallas Cowboys cards that picked up over the years. Now I've been focusing on building upon that PC: anything from Hall of Famers like Roger Staubach and Drew Pearson to current players and their parallels. Anything silver, blue, blue sparkle, blue wave, blue anything, I'm huge on those when it comes to color-matching parallels for my team. I enjoy having a collection of cards that spans decades, players, inserts, and parallels that are all unified by being Cowboys cards.

My collection is focused on Mariners who I enjoy/enjoyed watching play. I have a couple big Ichiro rookies, I have a couple big J Rod rookies, I pick up cool Kyle Seager cards when they pop up, and I will slowly add King Felix in over the next year. Random’s that I like/liked will flow in and out of the PC. Sold a ton of Kelenic this season since he was traded but kept a hand full of cool cards. I add Cal Raleigh cards for the right price. I PC to connect to my favorite team from my home state and keep it set up where ideally there’s a chunk that will maintain value and slowly increase (Ichiro), a part will maintain value over time (Felix), a part is subject to bigger fluctuations in value but I’m not spending money I’ll miss (J Rod), and parts will be worth little because the player is niche to the fandom/myself (Seager, Raleigh, Haniger, other random M’s). Just want to cover my bases and buy one big card per year that I won’t feel any pain in the price (some years it’s $50 others it’s more) and buy cards I enjoy.

I feel I am in a similar boat as you Sportscarddad. I Collect gretzky’s and like Jordan there are newer players that have come up and challenged the GOAT in his place in the sport. I feel regardless of Gretzky, Lebron or Jordan or McDavid, whoever…. As long as there is demand for these players your collection is safe. Some players are great but just don’t have that chase value in them. I tend to stay away from those. Example, Magic Johnson/Larry Bird vs Michael Jordan. I am not saying they aren’t great and we don’t have bird or Johnson collectors, we do. But we don’t have as much collectors chasing after these players/cards, thus less hype market demand when the market goes up or down. Not to mention less demand, harder to sell. Sorry if any typos I am typing one handed on the bus atm…. Yes on the bus so it’s not like I can afford those rare inserts you mentioned as well. 😂

I like your view on if "you missed the boat." After missing it? It's like trying to hitch your star to the Titanic IMO. Look for greener pastures. For anyone watching. I have to say - keep the Focus as narrow as possible with respect to ROI and get the best quality you can afford. Low grade vintage is good right now but in the 90s it was death. And who knows if that may reverse in the next decade? Well. That was fun. Thanx for your post. Last. On your favorite Brees card? Like me? Just tell them you want to be buried with. 😎

I understand how you feel, for the longest time i thought Ted Williams was awesome and is/was probably the greatest lefty whoever lived, but I learned he was a giant jerk. It might be the same way with Bonds, he was so hated by his own teammates and even by the local fans that it just amazes me people still want to collect his stuff. He was a great player, but wow the stories you hear makes you wonder what his deal was.

I know, I saw something on Bonds from college and the whole team voted him off the team they were so sick of him.

Ted Williams wasn't a jerk, he just didn't like reporters (and really, who does?). He was great with kids, with his teammates, with younger players and future generations, and he served his country in combat. Also really was the greatest hitter that ever lived. Definitely someone worth collecting.

jordan is king of basketball.. but the NBA was going bankrupt before him… the 2 most important players in basketbal was bird and magic.. even topps stopped making cards in 82 cause they wont sell..the bird and magic compete brought the NBA to profibility which allowed jordan to carry the torch… without bird and magic there would be no jordan...

I think you are collection all wrong and all of your quadrants are going to bleed out … it’s all about prospecting . I bought 20k of antman cards his rookie year

I'm guessing you paid high prices for Ant rookies given he was a rookie during the hype of the hobby in 2021. If he never wins a title, you're only going to lose money on those.

On Willie Mays, I do think he's probably the greatest all-around player ever, but I also think baseball needs him to be that guy. Baseball needs its Jordan, Gretzky, Brady, i.e. the guy it can point to as the GOAT. And especially now that they've made Negro League stats official, it really can't be anyone who played before 1947. It can't be Barry Bonds, because that isn't the face you want of your sport. So it needs to be Willie Mays - checks all the boxes, uplifting story, no steroids, wasn't a drunk like Mantle, etc. I think future generations of baseball fans will be brought up to think of Mays as the greatest ever.

It was purely pandering in the hopes of getting more black kids into baseball to now include negro league stats on mlb lists. And Hank Aaron was better than Mays. And just fyi, those negro league stats are all pre 1947 too. And May's may not have been a drunk.....he was just popping "greenies" i.e. speed.
