Back in 2016 i was at my peak of depression, and Imagine Dragons' songs were some of the ones that kept me sane in some way.
This song in particular, I wasn't really listening to the words, but I only listened to Dan's voice, his delivery of whatever he was saying, and their music that's one of a kind at least for me--it's nostalgic now..
It's interesting how come this song actually described how i was feeling without me comprehending the lyrics before, but just listened to the music and the voice of the singer. That's magical in every way.
It's been 6 yrs. since that suffering, and Imagine Dragons' songs made a mark to me since that year 2016.

I can feel the pain and fear of reality in this song. The line "and all these sorrows I have seen" tears my heart. Just behind the vocals, the electric guitar's light plucking gives an etherial chill that I'm in love with. Then, when it clams down, the piano rings out the chords almost like a broken heartbeat... it's beautiful.
This makes me think... Isn't he singing about how we turn a blind eye to the cruel reality of life? and how we look at everything through the lenses of a 'dream' ... the dream is what we want to see in life, forcing it to appear good and well and just swell! but really 'everythings a mess' ...wouldn't you agree?

I think he is talking about how he has seen the worst side of life. He has experienced so much an just wants everything to turn to the good but everyone who has seen life that way knows that it will never become better. But he wants it so bad, that he just doesn't want this life anymore and wants to dream, like everyone else who has never seen sorrows or is just happy. But something like depressiob or anxiety keeps him up in the real world he knows and doesn't want him to dream.

For the past few years, I've been struggling. Depression doesn't seem to go away as much as I hope it to. I work hard on changing my outlook on life, and how I view this world and myself. I try to change what I feel inside. And I've come to terms with the fact that I'm broken. It's not a bad thing, but it's not a good thing. I know who I am, but I don't know where to go from here either...
Im still trying... God, I'm tired of trying... But I know the only other alternative to stop trying is giving up. And now, there is a constant war in my head between myself and my depression. I fight it every day. Each day brings a different outcome. A different victory. I don't want to lose to it, so I'll always push back. But it seems the harder I push back, the more it reappears...
Im terrified. So so much. But I'm not giving up. I can't. Because if I give up, then... Well... The worst could happen... And I can't let that come about... I often think about what would happen if I just gave in... If I just let my depression get the best of me overall... And I still continue to fight these thoughts. These demons. These nightmares. These dreams.

@ZTRL I exactly know what you mean, its a constant fight, everyday, every Minute, its like you want to change your brain for someone else 's. Its like you want to be normal, like the other people, normal, not think too much or too little to give up. I know that, and yeah fighting, is all we have, and I believe things will get better someday, because they will, they have to.

Best song off the album by far. I cry almost every time I listen to it. Dan's voice has so much emotion and power behind it, it's absolutely gorgeous.

How emotionally riveting Dan solemnly, and sorrowfully says “golden and on top” and “colors...” Compared to how he says “how not everything is not what it seems” and “mess.” One is the comfort of disillusionment, and the other is like a sore that has festered into a rage of discontentment. How he shifts from lower tempos and melodies to higher and fuller notes is just beautiful. This song is amazingly organized ironically.

i just think that this song is about how life is hard and how its a mess. and how he just wants to be left alone to dream and hope for when life gets better. but arent we all just living hoping and dreaming for the better parts in life? we just keep holding on when life gets messy.

Dad leaves (or is abusive) relatives dining, himself being diagnosed with cancer (or something else) , and he knows about pain, real pain and loss, better than anyone else because thats all he's been exposed to. We all try to pretend that that kind of pain doesn't exist, but we all hear about it every day. We know that pretending is the only thing we can do to escape. This is what I love about Imagine Dragons. Their songs (almost) never have just one meaning. The either empower you or make you think. This one album is stronger and more meaningful than anything that bands like One Direction and Five Seconds of Summer will put out in ten years.

I really do not understand how even one person can dislike this song.

+Aimee Loftus I felt the exact same way when I was in the seventh and eighth grade. Super depressed and would keep myself busy with books. Turns out, constantly keeping your mind busy with work and school really helps. I got into a challenging high school and it really helped. So do projects like painting or building something. Just...something here (as in reality) that is mentally captivating really helps.

This song is forever one of my most favorite songs ever. And these guys are just incredible. I love them so much.
Every time i listen to this song i start immediately crying. It’s so emotional and when you hear Dan's voice, singing: "and all these sorrows i have seen...." it gives you goosebumps and you can feel the pain when his voice cracks.
And this is why i love Imagine Dragons. You can find yourself in their songs, in the lyrics, you can feel the pain, the happiness, the anger, the despair, the power, the fear, the excitement and other emotions with them. Because they play and sing what they really feel not what most of the would thinks (like most of today's songs).
You can relate to them, to their songs and emotions and their beautiful personalities. This song helps me in the hard times, it really does, as much as the other ID songs. Every time i hear it, it reminds me that i’m not the only one who feels horrible, i know that times will get better.

There's this indescribable quality to Imagine Dragons' music, and every single one of their songs gives me chills. Chills of wonder, happiness, enjoyment, sorrow, dissonance(in a good way), anguish, etc. I could go on for a while. This is one of very few bands/artists whose music I enjoy all throughout--inside and outside.
