My New Audi B8 S4 Daily Driver ALREADY HAS PROBLEMS!!!

  • I finally turned my 2018 Audi RS3 into a full blown race car and took away its daily driver responsibilities. I have now purchased a 2012 Audi S4 - B8 as my new daily driver. I have always loved these magnificent 3.0L supercharged V6 engines and feel super lucky that I now get to have one of my own. I have put on a total of 4000km so far and in this video I walk you through what I had to go through to buy this car as well as the issues that have already arisen.

    0:55 love the *fwapap* sound the exhaust gives from the revs, then when you launch it, I love the first dip in the RPM where it sounds like it's just sitting at 2,000 for a second or so, then BOOM takes off through the RPM range. Sounds awesome, can't wait to pickup my S4!

    This platform is extremely reliable, up until stage 2. Once you push the power to that point, there are several weak links to address. One of them is the supercharger intercoolers leaking. I haven't seen a stronger aftermarket replacement with equal pressure drop to the OEM intercoolers. Another is the OEM cats - I'd like to see a DIY for removal on those. Thank you for providing more content for this platform! I love my 6MT B8 S4.

Now need better tires. The APR ECU and 034 TCU combo gets me 3.85 0-60 using Dragy at around 60 degrees. The only mod I got is DIY Airbox Mod with AFE air filter (Where you drill holes under the airbox to suck cold air in) because I don't want to lose the low-end torque due to hot air/heat soak, and I want to keep my intake temp in check. The car is at 32k miles.

If I had to do it over again I would go with 034 tunes with the APR ultracharger as they don’t have a throttle body as of yet. If you’re planning to install test pipes I highly recommend something more quiet than AWE. There is a lot of drone that’s my only regret right now but besides that everything is great! Highly recommend Integrated Engineering, def worth going dual pulley w/throttle body,a Fluidampr pulley which is a two piece and you can have any custom size from 183-207mm, once your dual pulley look towards either gutting the cats or test pipes(gutted cats have less rasp vs test pipes). Also plenty of companies out there for heat exchanger upgrades highly recommend Merc Racing and separate the cooling systems. IE hpfp or autotech recommend IE tho, 034 motor mounts and drivetrain bushings from 034. You can get plenty of content and you can easily get into the 11's

    Give Injen or Cobb tuning a go. Definitely give a Scorpion Exhausts a call and see what they can do for a B8 cos i know they had some mad B7 kits and definitely the first thing to go with is an upgraded inter-cooler, coil-packs and small/tighter supercharger belt. Instantly better throttle response and more mid range torque along with lower temps. These engines suffer with high ish engine temps when the supercharger is worked harder.

    This is great! I just threw a rod through the block on my CC so I am in the market for a 3.0t either A6 or S4. I have done a ton of research on the 3.0t and I was leaning towards APR but now they are starting to pull there stage 2 software starting with the ea888 gen 1 to "better comply with EPA laws" - Cars and Cocktails. I am leaning towards 034, I have always gone with APR for all my my tuning but this whole pull back could mean seeing less power out of their tunes. Stage 1 across the board seems to be 440 crank and 450 for stage 2 for everyone. It really comes down to who you feel most comfortable with from a research and reliability stand point. I will definitely go dual pulley and possibly a jokerz 1320 ported charger a little further down the road. When I got it on the lift I saw the one bar was completely missing from when I bought the car, and I had broke the other from catching on a screw. I’m also on air suspension so I’m probably quite a bit lower than a stock s4, but it seems they might be a weak point. Ouch! Bad luck my man, sorry to hear you got stung like that. I would definitely have looked for evidence of the DSG service intervals being carried out at each 35k miles. If there was nothing to show they had been done I would've walked straight away and never looked back. There are reports of B8 cars having done well over 150k on the original unit with just regular servicing alone. There is also talk of doing the internal filter change as well as the outer one during servicing to extend the life of the unit, makes sense as it can get clogged up. Not hard to do and it sits right next to the basic cylindrical one that gets done as part of the DSG service. Main difference is having to drop the trans pan and then using an OBD tool to measure live temps to ensure you refill at 40 degrees C. Check Deutsche Auto Parts vids for more details and DIY info. Lastly, the cheapest and easiest upgrade to take away any slop in the gear changes is an aluminium billet transmission insert. Takes longer to get the car up in the air than to fit it in!

    How intense was/is the jerking when accelerating? It seems my DSG S4 gets a little confused sometimes and you can almost feel the clutches slightly disengaging/reengaging at the wrong times. This could just be stock DSG being silly. It's actually pretty unnoticeable, so I was wondering how aggressive your bucking is?
    Also, when I plan on tuning my S4, I am going with 034 no doubt. Their TCU tune for the DSG transmission is so crisp, they are still heavily focusing on the B8/8.5 platform coming out with cool new features, and their ECU tune offers pretty much the same as IE. With your plans, I'd suggest 034. If someone wants a little more oomph out of their daily S4, both 034 or IE would be fine.

    I definitely LOVE Integrated Engineering because of their amazing customer support and relatively cheaper parts but the same and if not better quality. for crank pulley I went with JHM 207mm so I can have minimal belt slip since i’m keeping the stock supercharger pulley and have the correct ratio for a dual pulley setup. MercRacing is a great option for heat exchangers, which is required when going dual pulley. I suggest gutting the cats and reinforcing the welds for no drone or going with full blown headers, if you want to keep cats then I would put them downstream (JHM has a catted downpipe) or have a custom high flow welded in the downpipe section. I’m not familiar with S4 with their rear mufflers having valves but the center suitcase muffler is definitely better for increased volume and still keeping it muffled from the rear mufflers for no drone. IE’s upgraded fuel pump is better than AutoTech, from quality and output standpoints along with their upgraded throttle body compared to APR. Jokerz porting job is probably amongst the best. That’s all the ones I could think out the top of my head but I am constantly researching on what type of parts I should go with for my personal taste for my A6
    EDIT: I stand by Integrated Engineering because they have enormous amounts of R&D, supremely helpful customer support team, release updates to tunes frequently, easy to use flash program that is used from home, I live in Utah and they’re down the street from me whenever I have some things I want added to my tune and such and they go through the R&D to make sure it’s safe for it to be added. Is 100k mikes too much for a 2012 s4 they want 15k for it I have an a4 09 prestige in very good shape it just reached 100k miles I know if I put money into the a4 it would be soo clean but I want an s4 what mileage should I go for

    • @VancityAudi
      @VancityAudi  Před 3 lety

      I go by the rule of no more than 20,000km a year when buying a used car. My 2012 had 104,000km when I bought it so I was well within that number.

    • @VancityAudi
      @VancityAudi  Před 2 lety

      Sadly there are a laundry list of things to look for with B8 S4's. I personally wouldn't buy a 2010 because the early model 2010's didn't have launch control. They also pretty much all suffer from shitty mechatronic transmission issues. I have no idea if $13,000 is overpaying because I know no details on the car other than the year and the km's.

    You should definitely return the rs3 to stock and make this your race car. Custom carbon fiber moon roof delete, gut the interior, sell everything, take the car down to 3000pds, than go stage 3 dual pulley ie tune + dsg tune using that money. Perfectly financially responsible fun.

    • @VancityAudi

    • @Bytrl
      @Bytrl Před 3 lety

      @@VancityAudi Yeah, maintaining a $50,000 investment is definitely stupid. Lol, way more important to go faster. Got it. Meanwhile, here in reality, you can build a 9 second 1/4 mile car for $20k if you're thrifty. And an s4 completely gutted and tuned would almost certainly be as fast as your rs3, but you're in too deep to justify the decisions. I think its smarter (and cheaper) to race car out the cheap car, and maintain the nice expensive car (so it maintains its value) and is therefore cheaper long term, and you can justify more projects for yt and that additional revenue stream. Im no stranger to bad financial decisions btw. I spent something like 10k modifying my 29k brz only to run high 14s and trade it in for $14k worth of value for the baby safe car. You know full well every penny spent on a modified car is a loss if for any reason you ever decide to sell it. The only project I've 'almost' broken even on was a 97 civic k20a swap selling for $9500, and even than I lost like 3k considering suspension, interior, wheels/tires, niceties like ac & ps. Lost 4k on a 08 gsxr 600 too. And my 16 Sierra was a financial trainwreck im queasy even mentioning. As someone who openly fucks up financially with this hobby just as you described yourself doing, I know what I suggested you do.. is the correct move. Do you though.

      @@VancityAudi jeeze dude. You act as if I'm shitting on your rs3, or even debating whats faster in practice or theory. Im merely stating facts in regards to what is, and isn't financially responsible assuming you're not filthy rich. If you build cars because you love the projects themselves (which I've given you the benefit of the doubt in assuming), than NOTHING is more fun, or financially responsible, than building a beast of a 'budget' car for race days, and not burn excessive money by starting with an expensive platform. Maybe you don't do you're own work though, so it wouldn't matter. Don't know, and it doesn't matter in regards to anything I said. Moving on, how the fuck do you know what is or isnt possible on the s4 platform when virtually noone has stripped one down to bare bones, installed lexan, built the motor, and tried? Hate to break it to you, but the s4 has an extra cylinder, and all that matters when you're racing is power to weight. You have zero reason to assume the s4 (or any car for that matter) couldn't be as fast as your rs3 other than the refusal to admit you started with the wrong car if money matters to you at all. Literally nothing about the rs3 that you paid extra for.. is even there anymore. And noones judging you. The car is sick, but the facts remain. Either you have fuck you money, or you care more about what people think, than actually enjoying the hobby. Your defensiveness tells me it's probably something that bothers you when the camera is off. Do you man, noone cares.

      @@Bytrl First off, I don't think you're shitting on my RS3 at all. Let's be real though. Modifying a car into a racecar is financially irresponsible any way you look at it, lol. You are just depreciating your asset more and more as you dump in more and more money. It is just a financially irresponsible hobby unless you are ballin' out of control... which I am not. So any way you look at it, what I'm doing with either one of my cars is stupid of me, lol
      As for your thoughts that no one has stripped an S4 and gone all out. You seriously need to do your research like I have already mentioned. You appear to have no idea what you're talking about. The WORLD'S FASTEST B8.5 S4 runs a 10.2. Stripped out, full mods, drag prepped. The world's fastest RS3 runs an 8.0, LMFAO. There is no comparison and no logical reason to change my S4 into a racecar and put my RS3 back to my daily driver. My RS3 is already gutted, has a rollcage and running 9.3's. My S4 has a full interior and cruises on the freeway like a Caddy, LOL. I'm good.
      Thanks for watching my video and commenting but I strongly disagree with your viewpoint. Cheers

    • @VancityAudi
      @VancityAudi  Před 2 lety +1

      The 2013's are significantly less prone to having issues with their transmissions vs a 2010-2012. If you can get into an even newer one though like a 2014 and newer you'd be even more better off. Manuals are amazing to drive, but are slower.
