  • Owner swapped in a NEW dual clutch and a used DSG transmission over the weekend!
He said the car now moves, but the engine is running really poorly and will not idle.
Also, he wants the radio and display fixed before getting the car ready for sale.

Shows us all to do as much research into the purchase vehicle as is possible before buying. Here in Manitoba Canada our public insurance will not insure a flood car if it has been written off. It will be sold with a parts only title. I am sure though that something could sneak into the system though. I usually buy my used from people I know or people that know people I know, LOL. I guess I might take a chance if I got a $30,000 vehicle for $5000. But I always have a extra vehicle kicking around that I can drive, so I would not be stuck. I would not touch a dual clutch Focus for free.

10 seconds googling the VIN brings up the auction listing showing it was flood damaged. A pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic would show him signs of flood damage. It is titled as salvaged. Even if the current owner says nothing about the flood damage you'd have to be an idiot to realize the car isn't a good used car.

Had a friend buy a I believe the year was a 1994, Jaguar XJ6 in a British racing green color that was in a flood (not salt water). He knew the guy who bought it from auction to flip it. So, he helped with the clean up. They gutted the car and pulled every module and computer apart and cleaned and scrubbed everything with electrical contact cleaner including the connectors on the harnesses. In the end he fell in love with the car and against my professional collision repair technician advise, he bought it. He got about 6 month trouble free out of it, then the electrical gremlins started. He owned the car for about 4 years. The combination of the natural electrical problems those cars were plagued with from the factory with the addition of electrical problems from the flood was a nightmare for him. I was actually blown away the engine and trans lasted in it considering they were both full of water and required dozens of flushes each to eventually get clean fluid. He sold the car to a guy who had plans to drop and LT1 in it.

Well done ivan :-D, more of the car working for now ha ha 😀
The owner really needs to clean every connector.. No chance lol.
Next time someone asks you to fix a water damaged car, make out you are ill for a few years :)
Just before i forget, Thankyou ivan for all the excellent videos you have made 😀
I hope no watery cars come your way in 2022, one was enough of a pain to diagnose.

The water level is important, I guess the ECU getting the same treatment as this board indicated the was maybe 2 feet because they are usually placed several feet up. The connectors running along the transmission I expected but the board just under the radio is at least 2 feet off the ground. I am surprised the interior doesn't need complete replacement, it looks good and no complaints of mildew.

If you leave the windows open you wont get a smell, but close it up in the sun for an hour or two...
Maybe the owner cleaned it out since he is selling it? Carpet and underlay didn't seem that bad.

Had the same thing happen with the stalling out fixing a friend of mine's Buick Le Sabre a while back replacing lower intake gaskets, upper intake, valve cover gaskets, water pump, the "coolant elbows", thermostat, and ignition control module. (Yeah, this thing was leak city lol) Forgot to connect the brake booster hose and it did the same exact thing. Those bigger jobs can make you forget stuff like that.

You could err I mean the owner could give that PCB an alcohol scrub down and check the surface mount caps on it for short. Find the offender and just pop it off. Most likely it is just a smother and not needed for functionality. Long term is not an issue since some other thing is waiting its turn to green crusty itself.

Highly enjoyed this series, glad you made the effort to document and present. Prior to retirement I was a troubleshooter in the power field. And, from firsthand experience I know that once water gets into electronics that has voltage (even if 'turned-off') it will forever after be unreliable. Guaranteed. That car has zero hope; its future is counting down as I type.
