Great mod! As a relative expert in exhaust stuff from years of installing and fabricating them, I would clean up the edge to a smooth transition without that jagged edge and it will be a smoother, quieter sound.👍🏻

@@SwankyCatProductions Yeah, it'll give it a smoother tone, also you could try putting a section of pipe between the beauty cap and the outlet of the spark arrestor, preferrably the same size as the hole in the beauty cap, that will also help to smooth the sound out a bunch! Basically you want as smooth of a transition as possible for the cleanest sound. 👍🏻

Hi, You made me to save lots of money for the new muffler.

  • @WoodrowfolloweroftheMessiah

Sounds Great! Every motorcycle that I have ever owned, I have modified and or replaced the stock exhaust to get more sound. ( currently running FMF pipe on my 2009 KLR.) But recently I have changed my mind. The next bike I get, hopefully Tenere or maybe New KLR, time will tell. I am going to keep the stock exhaust and keep quiet as possible. Reason is Down here in Arkansas on the back gravel roads we have a huge population of Dogs. As you know 3 things that don’t mix well are Motorcycles, gravel roads, and a pack of dogs chasing you! My thoughts are the louder the bike the more time the dogs have to get up off the porch and meet you in the middle of the road! Hopefully a quieter bike will give me a chance to sneak up on them and get by there place before they have a chance to wreck me! 👍🏻🙏🏻😀

Thanks for showing. Messy job but nice to see how the parts look like. I would've used very small drill bits making it possible for a recipro sawblade. Or just taking the mesh of. Or completely make a new insert and saving the original one, how's that? But trying to get more out of stock pipe is a lost cause from the start I'd say. Maybe to lose weight making the exhaust smaller. But not trying to make it louder and have worse performance. But I hope you're happy with the results, that's all that matters!

Keep mind that lowering the back pressure has an affect of leaning out the air fuel mixture. Usually a fuel injected machine will correct for this and throw in more fuel unless it's beyond the current injector capacities. Usually when that happens on new machines you will get a message on your display to let you know. Don't run your machine for long under those conditions or it will burn up from a lean condition.

Keyboard mechanics in shambles right now! you can see alot of weight reduction changing out the exhaust. When it's laying on top of you in the woods, every pound matters, haha. It's funny with my Beemer, there is no in between when it comes to exhaust. there's either stock with the separated cat/muffler setup, or there's 107 DB pipes. it's amazing! How fitting of Yamaha to finally bring the 700 to the US just in time for all the other manufacturers to exit that displacement range. They are a slick bike.

I'm in the same boat as you, Ben. I don't want a loud exhaust that is going to annoy people and/or get trails shut down. But, I do like the sound of your modified exhaust. Its not too much louder than stock and it has a nice note to it. I doubt its going to get you into trouble. It would have been cool to use a noise decibel app to measure how loud the stock exhaust was before and then measure after with your modified exhaust.

Motorcycle exhausts have been detuning the engines for decades.... it's a fact everybody knows it, don't have a fear of taking that carefully engineered muffler and tearing it apart because it actually Hurts your HP !!!!!
....now that you removed a bit of the restriction remove more !!!! take the spark arrester back out and on the plate that you showed us down in the bowels of the muffler drill #5 1/2" holes in that plate( or as many as you can get into it !) a long sharp punch will do in a pinch and just punch holes in that plate.) so the exhaust can actually get past the major restriction inside the muffler ! I guarantee you you will notice a big difference in both the noise and the power of the bike !
if it is too loud you can always drill a plate to cover the exhaust tip with as many holes as you can fit on it so it is well perforated
and then put OO steel wool into the cavity above the spark arrester this should quiet it down quite a bit.
I have been modifying bike exhaust sense I was a Kid...back in 1961..... on my honda 50cc . a diffuser is the best way to quiet down a noisy exhaust which is nothing more than a tin can with a thousand nail holes in it....or a plate over the outlet with enough holes in it to add up to the area of the pipe diameter.....the smaller you make the holes the quieter the exhaust will be
but the harder it will be to obtain the needed inlet pipe diameter in the sum of the holes you drilled.... ( you'll need more holes)
I ran a straight pipe for years with just a cap from a sprey paint can stuffed over the outlet and i poked as many holes in the paint can lid with a 1/8" nail.... the bike didn't know I put the baffle in it as it ran just as strong with it as it did without it !
but the sound was reduced by 50% at least..... everyone should modify their exhaust.... the engine needs it , I hate super loud exhaust noise , there is no excuse for that ! Harleys are notorious for it, but it is not necessary at all ! you can get rid of exhaust back pressure and have a quiet bike too..... it's just a question of how smart are you.

I notice at 1:19 that the "V" of your front tire tread pattern points forward, i.e. that the point of the "V"
hits the ground first. More than 98% of bikes come from the dealer with the "V" of the front tire tread
pointed BACK. The REAR tire tread patterns always point forward, as does yours (and all 4 car tires),
but your front tire is different. Is there a reason for that?

The Kenda K270s I had on my last bike may have been a little better off road, but weren't anywhere near as good on road. They handle the Tenere's power just as good on road as they do off and corner very well on pavement.

Everything I've read written by professional motorcycle journalists who talk with bike manufacturers is that as much engineering effort designing a modern bike is spent on exhaust design as on the engine design and on the interaction of the two - in the valve timing (i.e. cam profile) and the spark timing. And the resulting exhaust system requires that there be a given amount of back pressure to make it all work to meet the design goals of sound level, emission level, fuel efficiency, and minimum power reduction. Simply carving out the muffler to reduce back pressure does not automatically improve power or any other parameter, and it can actually REDUCE power by causing lean burn and overheating and general confusion of the ECU. IOW, it's not a DIY project.

They may very well spend a good amount of time on certain aspects of their exhaust systems, but I'd wager they're far more concerned with meeting emissions than they are squeezing out every last drop of performance. Plenty of reputable slip-on manufacturers have before and after dyno charts to prove that. I agree that what I did is not at all a performance enhancement, I feel I made that pretty clear in the video. I'm no expert on fuel injection systems but I know they're only meant to adjust for slight variations, like air temperature and that's about it. Similar to re-jetting a carbed bike for a new pipe, my current hack-job probably requires some things to be adjusted, but I don't plan on keeping it long enough to make that worth my time. I'm sure it's a different group of engineers and designers but I wouldn't give any of them to much credit after seeing how the 8" long exhaust hanger can be snaped off the subframe after dropping it a few times.

@@SwankyCatProductions - I agree that manufacturers are more motivated to meet emission requirements than to maximize power. And since after-market exhaust system developers feel relieved of that restriction, they can go for power and sound, damn the NOx and decibels! As for ECUs, they monitor oxygen in the exhaust gases and the engine rpm, and adjust fuel amount and injection timing and spark timing accordingly. It's all a complex dance that the manufacturer's engineers have to choreograph while the after-market muffler engineers can concentrate on just one or two parameters.
